    Hungry

    I think night time hunger is really common. My worst time is late afternoon. It's a constant battle. Sometimes I swap around dinner with my afternoon snack (so dinner around 3:00 or 4:00, snack around 6:00 or 7:00), sometimes I'll eat things like baby carrots dipped in hummus or ranch yogurt (ranch dressing mix with plain Greek yogurt) (carrots usually irritate my stomach after awhile, so I rarely eat much of this), other times sugar free Jello or sugar free popsicles. Anything to keep me from blowing it. You'll probably have to do the same - if you can't take your mind off it somehow, figure out how you can swap things around to make it easier - or stock up on "safe" things (some people chew SF gum or drink hot tea...). Or get out of the house (easier said then done at night - easier for me in the afternoon!)

    Hungry

    Hi - everyone everything is going well. I lost 105 lbs and on March 16th I’ll be my one year gastric bypass anniversary. Initially I had a somewhat difficult time eating- went on omeprazole for gastritis issues-it seemed to work. November I went to ER to realize after extensive testing I had a gallbladder attack. In December I had my gallbladder removed. I am doing well now but I am scared because I am hungry at night. Nighttime has always been my downfall. I try to eat well during the day. I work PT 10-2PM M-F and I start the day off with a protein shake - drink water-iced coffee no sugar almond milk-water-snack on either nuts,cheese, yogurt or protein bar. I try to have lunch right when I get home. I have dinner around 6-6:30. I consume about 1200 calories and always exceed my protein levels 70-80. On top of that I get fatigued. I do walk or do elliptical and recently kettlebells. I work ironically in a school cafeteria and it’s a very busy job. I can’t be very mindful as it is very fast paced. Has anyone got the night time hunger?
  3. So today has been. A struggle for me. Part of it could be my incisions pain because the way the ab muscles were stitched it pulls when I'm moving or upright. Some of it could be cooking for my family while I get to enjoy jello, broth and yogurt. But today I have been on a roller coster emotionally.

    Congrats on your up coming surgery. I had to crush some of my tablets. You need to chat to your doctor about this because some tablets react differently. I never did the puree stage. Just looking at it made me barf. Ground meats are not for me. I had yogurt and soft cheese and soft boiled eggs, mashed. I have heard people do baby food but I never even gave it to my children, TBH at the time it was out of my range due to costs, so its not something I know about.

    February 2023 surgery dates!

    Sorry to hear your recovery hasn’t been the smoothest @DrinkMoreRadium Are you feeling better today? I felt pretty good yesterday and was doing laps in the hall without any help. Thankfully I never had a foley, I can’t imagine that’s very fun. I got discharged yesterday afternoon after trying and keeping down some yogurt in addition to all the water. Today is another story though. I feel like I can’t get anything in because I feel so full. I hope you’re doing better!

    Grazing, is this normal?

    I would say that I graze all day too. I still have a good restriction, especially where meats are concerned, so to get my protein and enough calories in, I eat tiny meals all day. If don't manage to eat it, I will go back to it later. Protein yogurt for breakfast, Homemade lentil and vegetable soup for lunch, cheese and fruit snack in the afternoon. Meat or fish and vegetables for evening meal, nuts and seeds watching TV and a glass of milk before bed. It works for me and my constipation
  7. I have no pictures but on pureed/soft I mainly had greek yogurt, cottage cheese, scrambled eggs, hummus, chili, ground turkey and chicken which were allowed in this stage for me.

    Premier Protein Shakes

    I’ve always been sensitive to artificial sweeteners (at least the taste of them), and some more than others. It seems now after surgery, it’s even more sensitive. I had some yogurt yesterday and left a weird aftertaste that wouldn’t go away for about an hour.

Thank you ever so much for responding! i don’t log calories and have decided not to as I used to have an eating disorder which surrounded excessive calorie counting, and I don’t wish to get back into that routine. I will focus more on low carb/high protein intake when I eventually start eating solid food again. The yogurts and soups I buy all linger between the 100-200 calorie range I guess, and I usually have one yogurt and 4/5 tablespoons of plain tomato soup a day. The rest are UFit shakes and water x
  10. Hi all! I’m a new member of the group - I hope you’re all well! I had gastric sleeve surgery on 31st January 2023, after losing 13lbs on the pre-op diet. On the morning of my surgery, I weighed 281lbs. I lost no weight in the first week even though I was drinking my required water intake and having between 60-80g of protein a day. Today is two weeks post op. I’m officially allowed to move onto purées and so first thing this morning, I weighed myself and I’ve only lost 4lbs?? I try not to compare myself to others, but I’m so disheartened and even low key regret having the surgery now. I keep seeing people reporting a stone weight loss in a week, 12 lbs a week, 8 lbs the second week etc and so I assumed this would be the same for me. I’ve been very strict with my post op diet and making sure to get in at least 30 mins of movement a day. I’ve typically been consuming protein shakes, water, protein yogurt, tomato soups and the odd sugar-free/fat free children’s ice cream lolly. I feel like I’m doing something wrong, and feel like a bit of a failure. I feel like my body is actively working against me. I spoke to my bariatric nurse who just said ‘you’re still healing, give it time’, but I don’t know if it’s just an excuse.
  11. Hi All I was recently sleeves on 1/26/23. I was very excited and anxious for the procedure to jump start my progress. Fast fwd since surgery I have been having a hard time. When I graduated to semi soft foods It been rough. I haven't been able to keep anything down. It's been so bad that I was informed that it would be best that I go back to the previous stage of liquids only. I'm starting to feel down about getting the procedure. I been vomiting, having heart burn, discomfort trying to drink water, stomach pains, unsuccessful attempts to belch. I've been so frustrated trying to explain this to my Dr. She look at my like i'm crazy and it's hard telling someone the complications I'm having who have never experienced it. Have anyone else had this issue? Like water hurt when I drink it.. it's like so rough when trying to go down like i feel pain while it's traveling and when it finally settle. I'm going crazy please help. My Dr said she will order a upper GI so we will see. I feel like I may have dumping syndrome- although I haven't eaten anything sugary or with fat. I was told dumping syndrome mostly only occur with bypass patients. As in I shouldn't be having that issue but I feel like I do. If i try something as simple as yogurt it come right up like fast within a few minutes and I experience all the issues notes above. I be bent over trying to deal with the pain when this is happening. Any suggestions, tips or advice is welcomed.
  12. Even "phases" are an individual surgeon and nutritionist thing. You would think they would have come up with a consistent plan for post-ops, but no such luck. Nutritional programs are like religions, surgeons & nutritionists have their beliefs that they will go to their graves to defend. They are as important as life and death and every other plan is wrong. Your surgeons' plan is the path to success, everything else will lead to failure. Get a couple drinks in your nutritionist and they may admit the ultimate truth: that it is consistency in a healthy plan that is the key to everlasting... err... maintenance. Since you mentioned shakes, broth, jello, pudding, and scrambled egg I should think anything with similar consistencies would be OK. Perhaps mashed potatoes, yogurt. I think you could probably get away with pureed just about anything protein or veggie. Basically, anything similar to what you are doing now. Likewise if your surgeon mentioned any goals or types of food for this period you could do things that would also meet those goals. Good luck, Tek

    I have been on 3 trips since my surgery at the end of November, I always bring powdered protein shake usually unflavored and some fruit one to mix with crystal light. I do take some premier shakes, you can pass them through security and they will do an extra screening, have not had an issue with them, only once they asked and I told them I recently had surgery but they will assume you are diabetic. Once at location I purchased baby bel cheese and greek yogurt to supplement with the shakes and the rest of the meals were just sharing an appetizer or splitting a meal and taking leftovers for the next day.

    I usually travel by car but I travel quite a bit as a freelance video producer that takes marathon road trips with a lot of ground to cover. Before I check in my first night when I arrive somewhere, I will hit a local grocery store and pick up some things like sugar-free yogurt, string cheese, lunchmeat, grape tomatoes, etc and keep it in the fridge in my room so I'm not tempted to grab something from the breakfast buffet or door-dash late night junk to my room because I didn't prepare properly. After a day or two, if I don't take care of my business I can FEEL it, and the last time I took a trip where I didn't do what I needed to do, my husband said I looked visibly tired and weak when I got home. My biggest issue when traveling is not eating enough fresh veggies and fruits so at least once a day I try to find somewhere decent I can get a healthy salad or at least something like a green smoothie or something. I know better than to try to eat carbs on the go, but my downfall when I'm in "the travel zone" is living on meat snacks/cheese and therefore too much sodium and not enough vitamins and minerals. I also make liberal use of little plastic condiment cups with lids for organizing my supplements and vitamins (I even use them to portion out my collagen powder into individual servings.). I put all of them inside a freezer bag and then all I have to do is grab one each morning/evening.

    You can always drink milk and milkshakes in place of protein shakes. Cheese, deli meat and yogurts are easily sourced too.

    protein bars are good to take. I used to sometimes take beef jerky and cheese sticks with me, too (they can be out of refrigeration for quite awhile - as in hours if not a day or so). Once you're there, you may be able to find a grocery or convenience store that has things like yogurt, cheese sticks, etc.
  17. some stuff i ate today: - 1/2 a chicken pot pie: 280 cals - leftover desserts from yesterday (1 mini tart + 1 mini lava cookie): guessed 236 cals - 3/4 cup congee: 256 cals (also had 2 glasses red wine, slice of whole wheat baguette w/ peanut butter, 1/4 of a shrimp rice roll, beef jerky, cucumber and carrots with blue cheese dip, some salt and vinegar chips, and yogurt w/ pumpkin seeds throughout the day...that i didn't take pics of)

    Am I the only miserable one?

    I’m struggling right now too. I’m not regretting but wishing there was a fast forward. Like you I take adderall for adhd and had similar eating pattern before starting this process with not eating much during the day but then a huge meal in evening -often a take away when the adderall wears off. I’m having a bit of the opposite problem. I’m finding food really unappealing right now. Just looking at a piece of meat (especially grilled chicken and Turkey meatballs)or smelling it is enough to turn me off. I’m struggling to tolerate vegetables, I’m still experiencing nausea semi regularly. Worse than all of those things I have really low energy. I may be 60lbs lighter than I was 6 months ago when I had my first consultation with my surgeon but I the tiredness I feel 10 weeks out from surgery is as if I was still dragging that weight around. I try to be very active and truly enjoy excercise esp swimming and weightlifting which I do in the mornings but by 4pm the exhaustion strikes and by 6p it’s like the thought of getting out of bed let alone preparing dinner feels like a gargantuan task. I’m exceeding my Protein and hydration targets and feel like I’m following all the rules, the weight loss feels controlled and stable, but I now seem to dread eating and am dreaming of the days I’ll see my pre surgery energy level. So even know I remain positive about the outlook overall in future, real time feelings in the present moment are like you somewhat miserable. And you know what, I think it’s okay to feel that way and not pretend everything is great. The reality is change comes from struggle and rewriting a lifetime of psychologically treating food as a comfort or enemy, or indulgence rather than what it truly is - the fuel for our bodies - at least for me probably requires this misery to reset. Wishing you some comfort to cravings. One food joy I was able to find was creating a Greek yogurt topping bar, having previously never liked Greek yogurt this now is a bright spot in my food day. I hope can find at least one comfort like me. Early on I did also have mental craving for egg rolls and other normal foods so I think what you experiencing is probably normal - since you mentioned Chinese I’m linking to a recipe that satisfied that craving for me.     Food Before and After Photos

    I need everyone to know that I was rushing this morning and tried to drain the excess liquid from a Greek yogurt and 90% of it fell out. There was no way I was opening another or taking a pic for this thread so I just ate an abnormally small portion despite my last post 🤣
  20. So great news. I had an hour personal training this morning and despite literally dragging I was so tired last night, I woke up and rather than my standard protein shake I made 2/3c Fage 2% Greek yogurt with 2/3c chopped strawberries, 1 Tb PB2, 0.5 T chia seeds and had in a protein2O. on my way to the gym and killed the workout only feeling lightheaded in the last 5 minutes of the hour!
  21. We have a confirmed date of February 20th! Today was day 1 of my liquid diet. So far, so good!! Breakfast was plain oatmeal with a little protein shake in it for flavor (Premier Protein- chocolate peanut butter) and the rest of that shake. Lunch was a Dannon Light & Fit Strawberry Cheesecake yogurt. In between I've had about 4 oz beef broth and some Peach Tea Crystal Light. Still fighting to finish my second shake (Cake Batter). I'm finding it tough because everything that has any consistency is so sweet. Just gonna have to try harder. Any tips are appreciated!

  23. My preop starts Tuesday and I can't believe it's already here! It's coming quick. I prettyuch have everything I need now. What soup broths does everyone like that has low sodium in it? Also what does everyone like for yogurt? I like the dannon light and fit. Oikos is close in nutrition facts, but a little better. They don't have as mamy different flavors tho

  25. One of the most difficult challenges is probably going to be decreased levels of energy, especially with the long shifts. I’m a nurse and struggled to get through my 8 hour days on my return - although I only took 2 weeks off. Now I’m 2 months post op and can do my 8 hour days but on my 12 hour days I’m exhausted. Protein shakes will be your best friend! It sounds like you know a lot about the recovery period but you may find it difficult to manage eating every 3 hours while also getting adequate hydration. Sometimes it takes me an hour or more to eat a yogurt due to patient care and then that’s more time taken away that I can drink fluids. One of the hardest things has been no caffeine and sugar for the energy boosts.
