Is severe pain normal five days post op?
RhondaHigdon replied to Jokersgirl's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi Jokersgirl, I am waiting on my surgery date this week, so I haven't actually had my bypass yet. However, I believe Id wait on going to the ER where you had your surgery done. It is better safe then sorry. Please keep us posted, and best of luck. -
Bypass 12/22/20
-
I had to have a 48 hr. BRAVO ph monitor test, barium swallow test and an esophageal manometry test prior to insurance approval for sleeve to bypass conversion. I’m over 4 weeks post op and haven’t had an episode of GERD since surgery. It’s great! And losing weight is definitely an added bonus!

Hi everyone! I had gastric bypass on 11/3. Got lucky as they started cancelling surgeries about two weeks later. I’m feeling pretty good - currently in the puréed food phase but moving to soft foods Wednesday! -

I am a food addict. And Bypass isn't a cure.
AZhiker replied to MaybeMeow2's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You are right in that bypass won't cure the addiction. It never promised that. It is a tool that limits intake and creates a bit of malabsorption, but does not cure the head part. That is the work you have to do and it will probably take a good amount of therapy. You are clearly getting the endorphin/serotonin/dopamine release from the sugar. Sugar stimulates the same pleasure centers in the brain as cocaine, which is why it is so addictive in its own right. The good news is that if you can avoid all sugar for 3 solid days, the cravings will actually decrease. But you can't let it creep back in, or the cravings come back as strong as ever. The bad news is that you are going to have to work on figuring out another way to relieve stress, boredom, anxiety, or whatever else might be triggering the need for this sugar hit, and to find better coping mechanisms for dealing with the triggers. You are not alone. Many people deal with this and are able to overcome it. Congratulations on your weight loss thus far. The tool is working for you, but it can only do so much. Best of luck and I really do encourage you to get some therapy to gain some insight and tools to help you be successful for the long term. -

Hi Gang. Meow here. 5.5 months post op bypass. I've had slow but steady losses. (SW:217 CW:178. GW: 150) And I just felt the need to make a post about my sweet addiction. Before my surgery I found myself very concerned about dumping. Often asking in the forum whether Bypass meant I could never have treats again and being assured I could "eventually" or "a bite or two" or "in moderation" etc. This brought me great relief. I knew then I wasn't in the ideal frame of mind but I was doing the best I could. I found at about 4 weeks post op I could tolerate about 5 of my favorite chocolate covered almonds and ate them every night as a reward for hitting my protein and water goals. Eventually I increased that to 10 choco almonds. Then it moved to other desserts or candy. What I've found is my entire eating plan is focused on getting my "healthys" in so I can have a treat at the end of the day. I become obsessed. I realize I've always been that way. Eat healthy so you can indulge. I find I get nauseous if I eat a full portion of dessert. But I can usually get away with eating half. So I do. Every day. Or I eat the full portion and get nauseous. I get thru it. Usually lasts about 30 minutes. I feel miserable. I don't throw up. When I'm in the middle of the nausea I swear I'll never have sugar again. But then it passes and I'm the addict again. The last couple months I've somehow justified 2 treats a day. And this Thanksgiving was the first time I really realized how deeply I don't have control over my treat addiction. I was surrounded by baked goods. I'd eat a small one. Feel sick. Then a couple hours do it again. Over the 2 days of celebration I made myself feel sick about 5 times. The nausea is miserable. Sweats, light headed, toe-curling nausea. Then it passes. And I'm fine. And like a drug addict I indulge again. It's shocking. It's like I'm binging. Except I never throw up and it's only one treat at a time. I guess my point is... bypass didn't cure me. I do feel sick when I eat too much sugar. But it doesn't stop me from doing it. From constantly seeing how much I can have before I feel sick. I have a lot of work to do before I am no longer "unhealthy" regardless of my weight. Wanted to share in case others are sweet addicts and wondering how the surgery will affect that. -
Chopping it all off --- well not quite all

I wasn't going to comment but it's a beautiful style. My hair is baby fine and I already struggle with metabolic disorders and lifelong chronic illness so my hair just suffered thinning and when I let it grow out it looked terrible. But I'd moved states and I'm not trusting and didn't find someone to do my hair. I had to have two other surgeries around the same time as my gastric bypass surgery (Also my gallbladder during that surgery) did a number on my hair but I got my hair cut in a buzz cut pixie. Just a bit of length on top. And helps my hair not look so thin. I like how it feels. And it finally started growing thicker after awhile. Until I had skin removal surgery and my hair didn't grow for a good few months. In addition to my food based multivitamin, I take a hair, skin and nails supplement with biotin plus I take lots of collagen. I take vitamin c sorry I can't remember but I think it helps absorption of collagen. I also take omega 3-6-9, and turmeric, and calcium chews. My hair is baby fine but now growing thicker. -
Withdrawal symptoms from antidepressants 6 weeks PO
Jaelzion replied to ScrubRN's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Any time you tinker with digestion, it can affect how meds are absorbed (especially with the bypass or duodenal switch). Your bariatric team should have reviewed your meds to identify possible issues prior to surgery. Hopefully they will get it figured out quickly for you. My team did a good job of reviewing my meds and discussing the likely affect of my WLS but I still ran into trouble with the blood thinner I was taking (Xarelto). My hematologist tried to switch me to another med since the Xarelto requires a lot of food to be bioavailable but my insurance refused to cover it. So wouldn't you know it, I got a blood clot six months after surgery. Now I take injectable Lovenox because there's no requirement to have food with it. The Lovenox is more expensive than the drug my insurance refused to cover, plus they had to pay for my hospital stay when I had the clot. Go figure, right? -
Withdrawal symptoms from antidepressants 6 weeks PO
ScrubRN posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Prior to surgery my anxiety and depression were very well controlled by Zoloft and Lamictal. I was doing great until about a week ago when I started experiencing withdrawal type symptoms like dizziness, visual issues, and anxiety. I have been reading articles about bioavailability of meds post RNY. I’m 6 wks post op from revision to RNY. My doc wants me to try liquid Zoloft. Anybody have any experience with this? I’m scared and frustrated I was not warned of this possibly happening after surgery. -
I've had acid reflux since 2010. Has a gastric sleeve in 2014 which helped with weight loss, but increased the acid reflux. I've run out of possible medical management and the reflux was destroying my quality of life. After having a bunch of diagnostic tests to confirm my acid reflux, my insurance approved gastric bypass surgery (gastrojejunostomy). I had surgery 10/29/20 and haven't had an episode of reflux since. Realize, this was major life changing surgery to cure my acid reflux, but at 63, I didn't see any improvement in my life without surgery. I'm now 4 weeks post op, healing and most of the post op issues are resolving. A "complication" of this surgery is weight loss, and I've lost 18 lbs. since surgery...….SWEET! I'm not saying that surgery is the best option for everyone with chronic GERD, but it was definitely the right choice for me.

Surgery postponed due to Covid
Horseshowmom replied to shannels's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you have met all of your insurance pre-op requirements can you check with other surgeons who may still be performing surgeries? I totally understand the out of pocket max thing. We took a more expensive bi-weekly premium plan this year to get the lower out of pocket max, but I still paid 5500 out of pocket, and I wouldn’t want to do it again for the same procedure unless it was a revision etc. Right now my surgeon is still performing surgeries, at least as of last week, but I’m in Georgia, but I would be one that definitely would be calling around all my neighboring states programs and seeing if there was a surgeon who could get me in. They know it’s expensive, so I’d tell any one of them who would listen about your situation and see if they could get you in. My center had a 4 week fast track program, and that was for people just starting the journey, so I bet there is some place that could get you in!! Good luck!!!!! -
A normal day of food post op?
ichabodny replied to TrueNorth1's topic in Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Forum
I am just now at 3 months. Everyone is really different with this honestly. I had a tough time-just passing Thanksgiving, I am getting a bit more used to foods I can handle but I will be honest and say there are a lot of limits. Some days are still worse then others-Doc said that's normal for the first year. I try to eat my normal keto diet from before but still have to add Atkins shakes. Cold does better for me then hot so I will sometimes freeze a drink in a bowl for lunch and have that. It definitely helps. Turkey meatballs are my staple these days if I can mix it with a little sauce. They say bread is difficult but I will have at least one or two slices of Aldi zero carb bread- it gives me a lot of fiber and some protein. I toast it then put either the turkey meatballs (smushed and mixed) onto the bread then let it get a bit moist or, if it's a good day, I can try some egg and then chicken that's been boiled with keto barbecue sauce (just a tad-it has about 3 net carbs). Sometimes I can handle deli meat and cheese seems to be fine for me if I really chew well and take tiny bites. I also have my tablespoon or two of genepro for the missing protein. Veggies are still really hard for me but I do take a v8 green and I have been trying little bits of apple. Banana was pretty hard and other fruits can be a toss-up depending on the day. I started to mix a bit of sweet potato mashed with almond milk and some of my boiled chicken together for some meals and peas mashed can be ok if I can handle it. Popcorn that's air-popped is doable for me and seeming the easiest to take down in small amounts (no butter or salt-just plain). I will take it as a treat- a cup or so. I also live on the sugar-free popsicles with 15 calories when my store has it in stock. Tillapia works for me some days as well if it's not baked or fried but boiled in the bag. My calories are still only at around 800 on good days but I'm exercising well and labs are showing the genepro is doing well with the protein. Probably not the best example for you as you can be better able to handle varieties then I am right now but it's where I'm at. Had bypass Sept 1. -
Taking the meds that your Dr is giving you is what you can do now. I didn't have your surgery but had the Bypass-long time acid reflux and then stage 3 gerd made that the only possibility. That long term problem requires a change in foods along with the meds to get it managed. There are lists of foods and water that can help with that (alkaline levels are most important) and it requires some research. Your Dr won't give it much mind for now as long as it's not getting worse. You are right to be concerned but give it time. It can take at least 6 months of change of diet, exercise and weight loss to bring down the level. I'm sorry to say you will have to modify foods that you used to eat and always be mindful of anything that you can react poorly to. Some people even respond to lactose and dairy badly for acid reflux and gerd. It wont go away just with the weight loss and the surgery revision. Ask your Dr if they have suggestions for your diet and what foods to eat. As long as you do this, it won't get to Barret's Syndrome and worse. That is really the good news to this. It can be better by the summer but you will always have to watch the foods you eat after. Great job on keeping the weight loss despite huge challenges! Feel better.

Had my revision on 11/19 and it only been 8 days but still having a hard time sitting up for long periods of time. I have to lay down at some points during the day. I'm able to get my protein in since I have it in everything I eat and drink. So have to say it's not that bad now that the swelling in my stomach has gone down. I’m on Monday too for RNY bypass. I’m excited and anxious all at once. I’ve had 1 week of protein shakes and clear liquids. Bowel prep starts at 2 pm tomorrow. I’m looking forward to this next stage in my life even though it’s going to be challenging. -

Revision to a gastric bypass surgery -
I'm 11 months post-op bypass and I am having some pain. It's similar to what I experienced pre-surgery that I thought was heartburn but now I'm not sure. Anyone else experience anything similar? (Note: I had an ultrasound and it is not gallstones or anything else they could see with that. My liver is enlarged but we did additional blood tests and it seems to be a remnant from being obese most of my life and nothing to worry about). My symptoms include: - Intermittent low grade pain just to the right of my sternum (kind of behind my right breast, but still central if that makes any sense) - Pain often spreads to the back of my neck and shoulders. Again, more towards the right. - Gets better with Tylenol but not tums, etc... I'm going to make an appointment with my PC, but thanks for any thoughts to explore. Lori

Do we all need 70 grams of protein if we do NOT have surgery?
Darktowerdream replied to Kelchicky's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
I don't eat a lot of meat or necessarily veggies. But stick to. Low carb way of eating and have for years but for some reason it stopped working and I turned to the tool of gastric bypass surgery to help me. Metabolic disorders and inability to exercise due to lifelong chronic illness and disability doesn't help. But I'm here a year and a half later after surgery. it helps to calculate your baseline protein using the ratio of 0.36 grams of protein per 1 lb body weight. I have a morning protein bar with tea it's my routine. Lunch is my main meal. I might for example have a skillet meal of veggie burger, egg and maybe a little avocado or even a baby banana cooked in. Dinner is routinely Greek yogurt usually oikos triple zero mixed with protein powder usually PEScience (but I tdon't tidy VEga sport and it's good too) some golden flax, a little peanut butter powder sprinkled on top, freeze a bit, top with sola low carb granola only 15 grams I measure everything. Sometimes a sprinkle of pepitas. I like a combination of flavor and texture. But I usually end up getting more protein than I require ... while being low carb . And minimal sugar. edit: you don't need carbs to feel satisfied and can get similar taste and texture profiles from low carb meals. I had to deal with sugar addiction long before I even thought bariatric surgery was ever an option. -
Are you gifting yourself anything special this holiday season?
WishMeSmaller replied to Horseshowmom's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I think an activity tracker is the perfect self gift after WLS! I bought an Apple Watch for myself right after surgery. For Christmas this year, it is all about clothes. I am feeling great buying regular sizes and knowing I just look like a normal woman these days, rather than a morbidly obese woman. Best gift of 2020 was definitely my bypass surgery though!
