Lap band or sleeve? Why did you get revision to sleeve?
stacielynntate replied to okaykay's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I was banded in 2008 and lost 121 lbs. the. I had my sin in 2011 and let's just say the next 3 years where not fun. Could not keep any food down even soup and dealt with 24/7 acid reflux. Only time I had no issues is when my band was emptied. My dr had me do several test to see what was going on and found my band was sitting a little higher then normal, after my pregnancy. So I finally said enough and on 6/18 I got revision to the sleeve. Thank god there was not a lot of scar tissue from the band and my dr was able to clean it up. I'm now 2 weeks out and feel good. It is so nice to be able to eat and drink and keep, food down. I'm still worried of a leak but don't stress over it. Yes if there are major issues they I'll revise to DS or RNY but all depends on what is going on. -
I recently had the sleeve revision to gastric bypass and I have been going through so many emotions. First, I was really beating myself up about not losing what I thought I "should" be losing. Then I all of a sudden started to feel like my husbands extremely petite new assistant has the hots for him. I read texts... She was just too chummy for my liking but didnt even say anything that bad. Just a lot of LOL's after things that werent funny and asking for favors to fix her boat while she is a cheerleader. He doesnt respond at all the same way and is very short with his answers and they are all professional. And, he is not a cheat. I know that in my heart, but these emotions that I have are making feel worse about myself than ever before. I cry out of nowhere and have fabricated this potentional office romance and can't stop checking the call logs or texts. The one line stands out when he asked her what her jacket size was and her response was "well I am small all the way around but I guess I can take a medium for a jacket". Like just say medium!! I know the way that I am feeling has a lot to do with how I feel about myself and my own insecurities, but I dont know how to stop. Google also doesnt help. I went for my follow-up today, I am 5 weeks out, and she said I was doing great. I asked her if it is common to have these waves of depression and anxiety hit out of nowhere. She said she has seem some patients with the issue and told me to try Garden of Life Dr. Formulated Probiotics Mood+ Acidophilus Probiotic Supplement. She said sometimes with the bypass we are not getting enough serotonin in our systems and this could probably lift my mood. Just wondering if anyone else had any issues like this or if they are taking a supplement with serotonin? I also had a talk about what my expectations were for the surgery and how that could be affecting things. I am beating myself up because I am not seeing things drop as quickly as I thought they would and I am terrified this will be another bariatric sugery failure for me. I didnt realize that the weight loss wouldnt be as quick with a regular bypass before I had it. All of my other health issues seem to be getting better though, except my mental health haha.

Welcome! There are lots of band to sleeve revisions here. Mine was a month ago. It seems like the people who have to have the revision in 2 stages are usually people who had erosions, slips or esophageal dilation. Then the surgeon wants time for the damage to heal before proceeding to the sleeve. My surgeon told me he would try to do it in one but couldn't guarantee until he got in and saw. Mine ended up being in 1 surgery and I am very glad it was. You wouldn't believe the difference between sleeve and band. Good luck!

I am revising my sleeve to a DS on Feb 7th. I feel like I am going into this surgery with my eyes more open than before. that is good and bad. I know I can and will lose weight. but what if I can't keep it off? last time I maintained for years until pregnancies and miscarriages messed me up. I'm not going to have any more pregnancies, but I'm still scared. Sent from my SM-N975U using BariatricPal mobile app -
re: placement of the band. was his discovered during the revision to by-pass. could they have seen this on x-rays? Did the complications start right away, after you had lost some weight or when you started to re-gain. thanks

Best of luck to you. I really would like to know all about this. I’m considering the same thing. My vsg was done in 2015. I have since gained all my weight back. I’m currently on Ozempic. I’m taking it off slowly. But only 20 pounds lost so far. I inquired about the revision and am just nervous. Would love to hear all about it and what it intails as far as a hospital stay. Care afterwards and etc. -
Surgeon Uses Endoscope To Determine Sleeve Size
Mhy12784 replied to mitchjoann132010's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The surgical group I work with routinely uses a disposable 36fr bougie. However on complicated cases they have been known to use an endoscope instead of a bougie as it provides direct visualization. Is it common, no. But it's not unheard of. Of course this is very often on revisions or patients who have had/have a lap band in at the time of their procedure -
Because I care about the other blog.. haha uhm

Ok I found my other blog on accident the other day, and decided to update it. Since I updated it there, I'll copy & paste it here.. that way I look like I blog!! Uhmmmm..yeah did I mention I am the worst blogger in the history of people that attempt to do it? ----------------------------------------- So it's been a long time. In September I had to have revision surgery to fix my port. They thought it was leaking, but it ends up the booger flipped 180 degrees! Go figure for me. However, as soon as they fixed it.. they were able to fill that bad boy up and whamo! I am now 240lbs. That's -93lbs for those of you counting. I'm tight as.. some funny analogy of tight stuff. I rarely eat before 1pm.. and sometimes I'm so tight throughout the whole day that I just nibble or drink liquid meals. I'm still excited about my band. I've got about 60lbs to go. I went from a (bursting out of) size 26/28 & 5xl shirts... to 15/17 pants and 1x shirts. I am tall, so take into consideration I would never be a size 6 even in an anorexic moment. I'll just die of happiness if I reach size 14 pants. Since I forget to blog, the next time I check in will likely be when I'm 14. Who wants to take bets on it? -

@@jellybean04 Yes, I am going to have my 3rd WLS. I first had the lap band and had a huge host of problems with it and was the beginning of my GERD problems. When I revised to the VSG in 2010 it wasn't as known as it is today that if you already had GERD pre-surgery you really aren't a good candidate for VSG. I have extremely awful GERD, worse than ever. I wake up in the middle of the night choking and I sound like I have a sore throat all the time. Believe it or not there are medical reasons for someone to have revised 3 times, and I am one of them. I am currently working with my Bariatric Surgeon to revise to the Rny Gastric Bypass. All that said, I was incredibly successful with my Sleeve. I love my Sleeve still, I am 3.5 years out and in spite of my issues it still works for me. We will just have to part ways and I will get a new tool. Take care, and good question. -
@@LilMissDiva Irene I'm very curious about your journey and experiences. However, I don't want to be rude and reach out privately unless you are comfortable with that. The short version of my story: Banded in 2006 Erosion into stomach 2010 - band removed Previous 4 years have had well managed gerd from omepraezole. Gerd has increased in recent months and I am in process of getting evaluated to see if I have a hiatal hernia or other complication. New surgeon group (moved to a new state between 2010 and now) already asked if I would consider revision during my intake questioning. I haven't even seen anyone in that bariatric group yet! (strange!) I'm terribly afraid to even consider further surgeries, except to repair complications, because of all that I have already been through. I don't know anyone who has been down the road I have, so seeing that there may be others here, is a ray of hope.....

Hello, I'm Danielle and I am one of the MANY people who need to have a revision surgery. I had my band put in in July 2009. There were many ups and downs but I landed in the 40% EWL category. I still had 90lbs to go, but after discussing it with a different bariatric surgeon... He broke the news to me: (+)65% of all Lap Bands will fail in the first 6 years, and his case load carries more then 90 revisions a year. I was relieved to hear that it wasn't "Me" who failed; it was the band that failed. You see... I have a DIRE need to lose my weight. I have no co-morbidities, however, at 32 years old I have had 2 major back surgeries. In August 2012, I had a spinal fusion. My neurosurgeon explained that once you get one fusion, each subsequent disc will continue to deteriorate until my entire back is fused... Screws, rods, plates and all. My motivation is to not be crippled with another spinal fusion every 2 years until I am completely disabled at the age of 40. I am here in order to utilize EVERY POSSIBLE TOOL I can find, as well as, be here to support others. Thanks for taking the time to read my story. ***my official surgery date is Feb. 21, 2013 @ 7:30am***

Band to bypass Pre-Op
tzbandtobypass replied to Still Misbehavin's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I was revised band to RNY on 1/14. I cannot believe how different this is. I did okay with the band (my band surgery was 12/09) and lost about 100 pounds before I started having complications. I still had at least 50 more pounds to lose, but instead of losing those, my band was completely unfilled and I gained about 50 pounds over the course of only two months. It was heartbreaking to watch all of that hard work get flushed down the toilet. I sought out a new surgeon and he recommended the revision. He also gave me a huge fill to help me from gaining any more weight while I went through the process. It only took about 1 month to get through all the pre-op stuff and get things submitted to my insurance. I was approved the same day! Since surgery I have lost 29 pounds (today is my 4 week mark!). If I remember correctly that is much faster than I lost with the band. The experience has been very different in that after the band surgery there was a good month before I could get any fill and even then it was very small. It was several months until I had any kind of restriction and most of what I lose with the band was because I was "dieting" and not because the band really did much for me. I never got to the sweet spot and just wavered between not being able to feel the band and having so much restriction that I would everything up all the time. After this last 4 weeks, I wish I would have just done the RNY in 2009. Good luck to you on your surgery! To Butterfly, the band caused esophageal damage via acid reflux. Besides it just not working, having this symptom helped make the insurance process fly by. I had to do an upper endoscopy and colonoscopy before my surgeon would submit everything to insurance. That was to help me get approved quickly. I also had to get medical clearance from my primary care doctor, which just stated that i was healthy enough to undergo the surgery. I had to get blood work ordered by the surgeon and I also had to do another psych evaluation. It wasn't difficult at all and since it was my second time through an almost identical process, I knew what I had to get done in order to get approved. -
Gastric Bypass or Sleeve? Need feedback, please!
volkitteh replied to kpay10's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I went with the gastric bypass due to my diabetes. And it so far has worked to that affect. I am 3 weeks post op and have not had a single shot of insulin since 2 days post op. I had originally asked about band to sleeve revision but if you're diabetic, bypass is the way to go. If not it's probably a personal choice but any of these are just tools and we have to stick with them or they're all able to be defeated if the wrong habits return. -
Gastric Bypass or Sleeve? Need feedback, please!
Truckerchic replied to kpay10's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I was going to go with the sleeve but got RNY ....first longer history with the rny, sleeve is still considered a newer procedure as far as long term results... revisions, in my year of classes and research I have talked to a lot of people who got the band or sleeve and still ended up getting RNY including the friend that told me about the sleeve. I only wanted to have it done once... I am a food addict and wanted the most restrictions and limitations on my eating as possible, I have sleeved friends on my fitness pal that eat junk, yes it's their choice not to change their food habits but I didn't want that option of being able to eat a lot of greasy, sugary foods and although many of them have lost great they are very strict on themselves as not to backslide...I am 5 months out and I haven't dumped, I have had no issues with any foods, my blood work is good. I am down 78 lbs and feel great... if you have no medical issues that require one over the other the choice is up to you. Recommended reading The Big Book of Gastric Bypass and there is also one for the Sleeve and Band very detailed pre op, the surgery itself and first few months post... good luck!! -
Anyone had fluid taken OUT prior to banding and does it make a differce.
Poorehouse posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have had band in for probable 6-7 years... Te last 2 years my band has been empty due to my having a baby. I was never successful on band... And after talking to y'all want revision to sleeve. Some questions I had were... Is it beneficial to have the band drained first? I know mine is already drained but since I have had it in do long I wondered if that is a plus as far as the revision goes. I also wanted to know those who are successful with sleeve did you weight loss "age" you in appearance in your face. That may found stupid but I have a friend lost a lot of weight with her 3 bands lol... But while her body looks good she looks 10 years older now and wrinkles so defined in face. She's 40. Is there anything that you guys would suggest that someone who will have the sleeve in future can start doing now to help with the changes your body will go through. I hope that mashed sense ... Like should I take Biotin now to prevent hair loss if surgery is planned 2 months from now... As always thanks -
Gastric banding revision to RNY
James Marusek replied to samah's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
How are you doing on your Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements? During the losing phase, food consumption is not as important. It almost sounds like you are exceeding the maximum volume requirements for the meals at your stage in the program. I only knew of one person who went from lap band revision to RNY. He had to have it done. His band was eroding into his stomach. As a result when they did the revision, they made his pouch smaller than the average RNY. He could eat as much as most RNY patients. But he lost a lot of weight and was pleased with the result of his revision. -
Stomach stretching question
Tiffykins replied to mp8btpc's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Pouches stretch. With the band you get a pouch, so even if you have restriction, you can stretch your pouch, and eat more food. With the sleeve, the portion of the stomach that remains (if your surgeon dissects the fundus completely), is mainly muscle so stretching is very minimal with the sleeve. There is not any of the stretchy, flabby part of the stomach left behind like with the old stomach stapling, and even gastric bypass. Your stomach will function just like it does now only with a smaller capacity. I can honestly tell you that I would not recommend a band to my worse enemy because of the stats that are rolling out for regain, reoperations, revisions, and overall complications from the last 4 years on the band. Well, and the other fact that the band screwed me royally, and destroyed my stomach tissue. So, I'm pretty biased towards the sleeve since I've lived with both. -
Just curious....
parisshel replied to AuburnDarling's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If this is your plan, I would strongly suggest you consider another form of WLS. The lapband is a "crutch", or "tool" as many will say, without which one is merely dieting (and hungry, frustrated and sad). Many who have had bands removed will testify to regaining the weight lost with the band (plus additional pounds, which is similar to what happens when a non-surgical dieter stops dieting). Most former bandsters on this platform post that when they had their bands removed, they went on to do a revision surgery such as bypass, sleeve or RnY. So based on that, if would suggest that if you plan to get banded, and then have the band removed, you should also include in your plan a budget for revision surgery, or an acceptance for the rebound weight gain. I've never read about a bandster who kept their weight off after band removal. -
Hi there, just checking to see if you had your revision with medicare.? My mom is having a lot of issues and i don't know if she should look on to another doctor. I'm worried about her.

Has anyone had a revision on their sleeve. I was thinking pfnsleeve to bypass but had a GI barium swallow. Had my sleeve about 5 years ago. Between the age of my sleeve and the big size of it I think I’m opting for a sleeve re do to make it smaller. Any thoughts ? Anyone have a redo ?

Pennsylvania highmark bcbs revision
Donna415 replied to Stacylynn1982's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I sent it to you but here is the part about revisions. A conversion from an adjustable band to a sleeve gastrectomy, RYGB or BPD/DS for individuals who have been compliant with a prescribed nutrition and exercise program following the band procedure, and there are complications that cannot be corrected with band manipulation, adjustments or replacement. Inadequate weight loss due to individual noncompliance with postoperative nutrition and exercise recommendations is considered not medically necessary for revision or conversion surgery and is non-covered. Repeat procedures for repair, revision, or conversion to another surgical procedure following a gastric bypass or gastric restrictive procedure are considered not medically necessary when the criteria listed above are not met.
