    DS reaction to sugar

Check this picture out. (https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/treatment-tests-and-therapies/bpdds-weightloss-surgery) 1. The stomach is sleeved. 2. The small intestine is mostly bypassed to the larger intestine which causes less of the food you eat to be absorbed. (Malabsorption) You are forced to eat less due to the size of the stomach. What you can eat, not much is able to be used by the body. I'm not a surgeon, but I would think its possible to switch from a sleeve to a DS as you've done step 1 already. Just need to do step 2. I'm sure others will help explain things more and cover what I missed here.
  2. Its hard to believe that this kind of surgery has been around this long already. Yes I had this done 45 years ago in Traverse City at Munson Hospital. Back then it was an open surgery they staple the stomach and create a small pouch then it is bypassed to the jejunum. While they were doing this surgery back then all the organs were removed and cleaned out. You stayed in the hospital for 2 weeks or so, much different then how it is done now adays. I have maintained the weight loss over the years, however, there was a few years when I had put on up to 40 pounds and just started slowly getting it back off once I realized what I was doing.
  3. I did the same thing in 2009 with the lapband. I'd read a few things on the internet, made an appt with a dr and within 2 weeks I had completed my nutritionist and psych appts and was in surgery. Had no idea what I was getting myself into. Not sure why my insurance didn't require at least a time of consideration, but they moved quickly. While I loved my band - until I didn't and I lost most of my excess weight with it, it finally ahd enuf of my destruction to it. I couldn't figure out how to eat slowly, making me vomit frequently. Causing a slip. When I was facing a revision, I did alot of research on the RNY and the sleeve. I had gained 30 lbs in the year my band was unfilled after the slip so all I had to lose was 40 lbs (bmi was 28 at 174 lbs). I felt the RNY was a bit drastic for my purposes. But I knew if I just had the band removed without a revision, I would be back up to 250 soon. So while I did virtually NO research on my first wls, I did tons of research for my sleeve. WHile I'm 13 months out I still have 15 lbs to goal. It's going very slowly now, very slowly. The first 100 lbs is easy peasy compared with the last 15. But do I regret surgery? Never. Not the lapband or the sleeve. Comparing the 2 would be another whole post so I won't bore anyone with those details. Do ur research tho. U can't back pedal afterwards... Good luck!

    MONDAY IS THE DAY!!!!!

Have you heard the c section thing also? I truly hope it's true, but even if it's not this will be worth it cause I hate not being able to be as active as I would like to with my son. Funny you say nervous.........I'm not nervous and I think it's because my daddy has to have bypass on 8/11 so I think I'm so focused on getting myself ready to be here for my family It hasn't set in. I hope I'm not a mess on monday morning!
  5. I think it is awesome that you are looking forward to a healthier life. Asking people's opinions here is a great way to start thinking about which way to go. However, the best resource is your bariatric team. There are many factors that make one procedure better than the other. Some of these factors can only be found by tests and the experience of the surgeon. For me, I was told by two different bariatric surgeons that the only procedure that would even be recommended was the sleeve. I have had multiple abdominal surgeries and these preclude having the bypass. By discussing everything with my current surgeon and along with my upper endoscopy and a follow-up CT scan, the best option for me is the sleeve. Good luck with your journey.
  6. Hello! First of all I'd like to say that even though this is my first post, I've received a lot of advice and encouragement from many of you here so thank you! I had my laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery on December 2nd, 2014 and I'm happy to say I've had an amazing recovery! I started my journey at 5'6 weighing 265lbs at my heaviest, 256lbs on surgery date and 10 days post op am now at 240lbs ????????I stopped taking my pain meds about 4 days after surgery, I can sleep in whatever position I want, I've been trying pureed foods and have never felt nausea, haven't vomited or felt uncomfortably full. I'm feeling great....but Just a couple of hours ago I fell down the steps...only 5 steps, but I hurt my bum and my elbow, and of course I'm concerned about my insides, I just had major surgery a few days ago. I feel ok, my incisions look fine and everything seems normal but I'm still a little nervous. Will be calling my surgeons office tomorrow to see what she says. Did anyone ever go through something like this? Should I be more worried? Help. ????

    Pre surgery fears

I wasn’t worried during the whole three year process of trying to get it done. A week before my surgery I lost my mind and was all of a sudden scared that I might die in surgery(literally hit me like a brick wall). My mom(who also had gastric bypass had the same dr as me) told me it’s like taking a bandaid off for them. I even looked up the chances of death(I thought it was stupid of me but it oddly made me feel better) and you have a higher chance of dying from gallbladder or hip surgery. I was so scared I even watched a video of the surgery being performed to see what might go wrong. My mom said I was crazy but they did it with ease and it made me feel better 😂
  8. Decided to wait until post summer vacations and the kids are back in school, but glad to have a date for my bypass. I'm the first one in my family willing to address my weight issues and look for a healthier lifestyle change with WLS. Anyone else with surgery scheduled in that time period looking for a buddy, hit me up. Thanks to all that post and share on this site, it's been a great source of information these past couple of months.

Gastric Reflux Post Op... A Survey

Hi Becky I am so glad that you found this thread! We will definitely keep in touch. I'm wishing you the very best on your surgery in a couple weeks and please check in to let us know how you're doing. I pray that having the revision to bypass will get you on the road to recovery and having use of your tool like you're supposed to.

    Sex

No idea how some woman say they had sex so fast after surgery. I had bypass and no sex for at least 2 months . Everything hurt too much!

    Kaiser Wls Patients

I did sleeve with Kaiser. No it will not un qualify you. I asked the same question. Had to lose 20lbs. pre surgery. Lost 26lbs. They go by original weight. Good luck. I just hit my goal of 175 from 297. I love my sleeve and have had NO problems. I don't even notice I had surgery except for the amount of food I can eat is so little. Just what I needed. I love the fact that sleeve lets you eat anything you want. The portions was my problem and now it is solved. Bypass surgery restricts you from Dairy and sugers . Not to mention ALL the problems they seem to have after surgery. I think Sleeve is the BEST option out there, Best of luck to you and your new Life/figure/. LOL!
  12. I am looking for some data regarding GERD and the Rny Gastric Bypass for Post Op's. You can be a virgin stomach or a revision patient, if you are a revision, please reply in the comments as well. I am revising from Sleeve to Bypass because my Surgeon feels it will be best bet to cure my GERD. I have it extremely bad and even if it helped to make it better it would be a relief for me. Thanks in advance!
  13. OK, so my husband has jumped through all the hoops and has received approval for the sleeve. His date is May 2! Yay for him! Now, I was just submitted yesterday for a band-to-sleeve revision. I am praying I am approved too. Assuming I AM approved and the doctor's office doesn't drop any more last minute surprises at me (that's another story!), do you think our surgeries spaced out 2-3 weeks apart is a good amount of time? Will hubby feel up to taking care of me by then? Time is of the essence right now. My daughter is getting married in August and I have to buy a dress and travel out of state! I need to start losing weight ASAP lol!

    Whom did/will you tell?

I have told a lot if people, mostly because I don't care what anyone thinks. It's taken me a long to get to a point where I want & can afford to get some help. I've been looking into this for 3yrs. A few people @ work have gotten it done, including my boss,(she had bypass) and the support is great. I've had a few nay-sayers, but I told them not to mad if I'm cuter then they are!! But seriously, you would be amazed at the support you get from folks. Good luck w/ all, and you will always get support from us:wub:

    New and considering

radink, my sister had the Bypass surgery. She lost a lot of weight fast but it left her with a lot of sagging skin and unfortunately, her insurance refuses to approve the surgery to have the excess removed. Due to other complications/issues, she was nearly 450 lbs when she had the surgery and now down to about 250 but I would say a good 35 is skin. If you choose GBP, make sure your insurance company will approve the surgery for the tummy tuck and removal of the excess skin. You lose much slower with the band but I believe that gives your skin more time to shrink naturally (not to say there won't be some excess).

    Anyone from nyc BRONX area

Nobody knows your body and how bad or good you feel better than you. You cannot live your life according to what other people say or think. Believe me as petrified as I am about the bypass, if I ever became a diabetic, I would be on the operating table the next day because I would rather live with 1,000 bypasses before I would risk either going blind or have my hands and/or feet go black and possibly having them amputated. For what? Just so I can eat a damn Oreo or a piece of cake? Oh no, not happening! Not in my lifetime anyway. I wouldn't think twice. Please feel free to talk anytime if you like. Be blessed. Stephen

    wish you got lap band?

Lapbands are mostly going out of favor due to complications such as erosions and not-as-good results re: weight loss. I can give more info later; maybe tomorrow. Depending on your BMI or other co-morbidities, it may actually be contraindicated; the sleeve or bypass might be a better option. As above, many former LapBand patients convert to the sleeve. Some surgeons still do the band, but in a recent medical conference of 4,000 bariatric surgeons (and some counselors, nutritionists, etc.), the LapBand is less well received or done these days. I'll try to post to this again tomorrow should I get time. Weigh all factors, then do what feels right for you. In any case, here's praying for a safe journey and no complications next week or after.

    wish you got lap band?

I'm a revision patient waiting to convert from a band to a sleeve. I was banded in 2009 and lost 50 pounds. After about a year,I began to have problems with food getting stuck which is excruciatingly painful. I ended up in the hospital 3 times because of stuck food. During this time, I switched jobs and had to start over with a new bariatric surgeon who had to do extensive testing in order to figure out what was was wrong. Dr finally determined that my band had slipped and removed all fluid. That was a year ago. It has taken me this long to do everything required to submit for revision surgery. I've gained back 25 pounds. I'm just waiting for insurance approval again so I can get this painful, useless thing out of me. I would not recommend the band to anyone.

    Mexico bound

My insurance would only pay for the band or the bypass. After all my research, I decided the best surgery for me is the vertical gastric sleeve, and I cannot afford the U.S. prices for self-pay. I have a nurse that works for me that had the sleeve in Mexico, and she gave me the idea to look south of the border. Even though I didn't choose her surgeon or the company she went with, I am confident I made the right choice for me. I will have my sleeve on 9/5/15 with Dr. Altamirano.

How Fast From Beginning to End?

Hi: Provinces vary, but you can get Weight Loss Surgery under the public medical system if you are willing to wait a few years. If you are low income, get your doctor to refer you to the surgeon authorized to do gastric bypass or band in some provinces to get on the waiting list. Then if you win the lottery check into a private clinci. You are covered both ways. The public list is only going to get longer so don't wait too long. Doreen
  22. oh gosh I cant help but comment cause In my own family there have been 5 people who have had bypass surgerys and none yet (Im waiting to get approved) with the band and all of them are not what could be called success stories. My mom lost her first 100lbs and never really lost anymore, has major stomach issues now and malnutrition. Still overweight and struggling with it. My uncle ended up being huge (400+)despite 2-3 WLSurgerys and passed away in his 50's. 2 aunts who did a bit better lost most of their weight but still do the diet yoyo 4-5 years later. One cousin who had it done and hasn't reached her goals yet. And over the 2 years i've known her hasn't lost or gained a whole lot. Is still at least 50lbs overweight When it comes to so called *Statistics* In our age of computers and internet you can find *Statistics* to back up just about anything you can imagine within reason. And that many a time the people in the studies often times only participate for the money or chance for free health care during the study. So they aren't always serious about about what ever it is the study involves. The facts from *Real* people on this site for me holds WAY more truth in my eyes. Then any so called study. And if you read enough of the forum you'll see for yourself that IT IS POSSIBLE. To lose ALL the weight you want to. But its YOU who has to make it happen. If the band is what you want don't let your doctor talk you out of it. If he/she cant accept that you've made a decision then find another doctor. Get a second opinion if you need to. its ghastly to me that so many doctors try to push bypass instead of the band. Cause at least the band is removable If to many problems occur. Bypass isn't they can't put back what they took out. I look at my mom with missing teeth and sunken eyes from the malnutrition she has been fighting for years and wish I could strangle whoever came up with the idea of the bypass.
  23. with proper diet AND EXERCISE i believe you can lose as much as you want no matter what route you take or even if you take weightloss surgery or not. my problem was i never could STICK with anything long enough and even when i did, the weight ALWAYS came back plus some! i'm only 4 days post op and i eat when i'm hungry and stop when i'm full...granted i'm on the "mushies" diet right now...but i was surprised today to learn that i've already lost 6.9 lbs!!! in only 4days!!! the lapband ROCKS! my dr. tried to convince me for the gastric bypass but i simply told him, i'm not looking to get skinny, i'm comfortable being fat bc fat is all i know. i just want to know how much do i need to lose to lose the co-morbidities that i have (sleep apnea, diabetes, hypothyroid) and he said then go for the lapband. now that being said, i have full intention of losing more then just the co-morbidities....for $13,500 plus interest its only worth it to me to get my monies worth and that means doing everything the right way and working hard at it. i haven't been able to do much of the exercise part yet bc i'm still healing, but i've already begun to walk daily. i just walk as much as i can down the street and back and then i drive it in my car to see how far i walked. i also log EVERYTHING that goes into my mouth and ALL the walking i do. buy yourself a journal and keep track of it. mine looks something like this: @ 8am 6oz carnation instant bkfst @ 11am 1.5oz banana @ 2:45pm 1/2 SugarFree Popsicle @ 6pm 2oz green Beans 3.5oz scalloped potatoes @ 9:30pm 2oz SugarFree Jello
  24. I have Anthem BCBS and was approved for a band to GBP revision last month. They did make me get another psych eval but that was all.
