    Developed Diabetes After Surgery

Just popping in to say my A1C has been higher at every post op lab. 1 month 3 month and just now 6month at 5.6 (which my internal med doc husband says is close to pre-diabetic) I did not have issues before Bypass. I find it concerning which is why I did a search and found this post. I believe I've read this has happened to others which does seem to contradict the fact that diabetics are cured by Bypass. Hm...
  2. Everyone loses at different rates. When my mom had the gastric bypass 6 years ago, she started out slow too and then maybe 2 months after surgery she was steady losing weight . It all depends on the person.
  3. Hi, I had gastric bypass 11/17/20 and every time I eat anything, I get super nauseous and feel terrible. Is anyone else having this issue? or does anyone have any recommendations?

    Requirements complete now what

Don't be afraid to call and ask questions about anything. That is what they are there for, but you must stand up for yourself and be proactive. They are also looking after hundreds of other patients and you must take the initiative for your own care. Offices have been known to lose documents, reports, and sometimes just don't keep on top of the progress for every patient like they should. Keep copies of all your reports, and CALL them if you have questions or don't understand something. This is a great opportunity to learn how to be a bit more assertive and less passive. The decision for WLS is one of the biggest of your life, and you will be the one to call the shots afterward - who to tell, how to work your plan, how and when to exercise, etc. You will need to call the nutritionist when you have questions, and call your team if you are worried about any problems. Jump in with both feet! Go for it! Be a pain-in-the-"you know what" if you need to be, but stand up for yourself and your new life!!! PS: After my surgery, I got an enormous bill. They said I was out of network and that my hiatal hernia repair was done by someone other than my surgeon, and that person was also out of network. I became a royal PITA (Pain In The A.....). I refused to pay the bill and they then reduced my surgeon's bypass portion to account for in-network. Great. I paid for that. No problem. But I had a copy of the full surgical report and it clearly stated that both surgeries were done by my designated surgeon. It went around and around for months, but finally the hiatal hernia portion was eliminated. I was under threat of being turned over to collections, and I went around and around with the hospital billing department and insurance company, as well as the doctor's office. But it finally got resolved in the way it should have been in the first place. To make a long story short - keep copies of everything and don't be afraid to stand up for yourself!
  5. I wonder if your memory issues are due to any of the medications you may be on? I take Gabapentin and Topamax for chronic pain and these medications cause me memory issues. I too had a revision from the sleeve to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass due to acid reflux along with a second hiatal hernia repair. It was my 15th surgery. I had previous surgeries to remove gallbladder, appendix, 3 shoulder repairs, foot surgery, and on and on. But I blame my memory issues on the medications that they give me to control pain as I notice when they increase the amount the more issues I have. They don't like to prescribe opioids any longer and these had no issues on memory and now these alternative do and so we just have to live with the side effects and decide if we want to live with the pain or deal with the side effects. I am also on medication for depression and PTSD which contribute to the side effects as well. So, I would say to look at whatever medications you are on and discuss this with your doctor and decide if the side effects are worth it for you. I don't think it is a side effect of the surgery. And you are correct, this surgery and journey are not the easy way out. It takes hard work but it is definitely worth it! This group has been my greatest support and I have always been able to find support for whatever issue may arise. I am especially thankful for this group.

    Looking forward to...

I’m hoping for a bypass in March, but looking at all of the success stories, I just can’t believe that it’s really going to be possible. I thought if I wrote a list of all the things I’m looking forward to doing that it’d become more “real.” Feel free to add to it or if you’ve already experienced your own victories, please share! 1. Going to a professional game and not having to squeeze into a seat. Leaving said game without having bruises on my hips from the arms digging in. 2. Wearing fun socks. Tomorrow is Christmas sock day at work, and I never get to participate because I can’t wear tall socks because of my calves. 3. Getting a pair of tall boots - same problem as the socks! 4. Being able to put my wedding rings back on after YEARS of not wearing them. 5. Shopping in boutiques or any store in the regular section and not having to search for the women’s little corner. 6. Riding a roller coaster again.

    Belly wrap

I had the gastric bypass and was given two binders at the hospital. They are light compression and help with not needing the pillow when getting up from a chair and such. I would totally check in with your surgical team with your pain concerns, if only for piece of mind.
  8. I was looking for this forum I just joined today. I am 2 years 2 months post gastric bypass . I only had regain like for 2 to 5 pounds and that is where I was not accountable like hanging with people who introduce the foods to me and I was tempted to indulge so most times I remind myself why I did this surgery and remove myself from the situation and get back on tract. Since the pandemic I haven't gain any weight because I am vigilant with my food I do a lot of exercise like waking and work out with a trainer but now we close down again so I do from home. I find that dairy especially yogurt cause the scale not to move. Getting in my water, protein and vitamins really help me so much. I find that snacking doesn't help at all the scale goes up when I snack. Also I will try to do the no meat and see if it will help me to. You are so right nutrition plays a big role in this journey. Keep working hard at the regain it will go. Good luck

    Nervous

Hi there, Full disclosure: I had the sleeve, not the bypass. The Post-op really wasn't that bad for me. I had some post-op pain but my surgeon worked with me to find the right medication dose to deal with that and I felt better quickly. At no time did I go for any extended period with out of control pain. Those first few days can be uncomfortable and I remember I didn't want to move much, LOL. But I did get up and walk with the nurses the same day as my surgery. I didn't suffer with gas pains as some people do, but walking is supposed to help a lot with that. I had ZERO hunger right after surgery, which was good because I was unable to do anything more than drink water for a while. But my surgeon said that's not uncommon and he wasn't worried. I spent one night in the hospital and was discharged. My sister stayed with me for 3 days just to make sure I was okay and then she went home. I was fine, able to get up, go to the kitchen and/or bathroom, etc. As surgeries go, the post-op was fine. As far as sagging skin, for a lot of us, it's a fact of life when we lose a massive amount of weight. However, most of the extra skin I have is on my tummy and when I'm dressed it's not obvious to anyone else. And I wouldn't take back the 120 pounds I've lost to have the tight, but huge tummy I had before 😀. I feel so much better in every way at this weight that it's more than worth it to have the extra skin. At some point, I plan to have a tummy tuck but until then, I'm not walking around showing my tummy anyway so it's okay, LOL. I've never met a single person who lost a lot of weight with weight loss surgery and said they would prefer to have the extra weight back rather than the sagging skin. There may be someone out there who feels that way but I think it's pretty rare. I hope that helps! This is a pretty awesome journey you're embarking on. 😉
  10. Hi am 2 years 2 months post gastric bypass and so far very successful I lost 155 pounds. Is there anyone who is over two years? If so how do you find it . Also any suggestions or tips . I work out so much but now that they close the gyms again it is a struggle and also outside is cold so this makes it challenging. I so work inside my apartment but not the same like going to the gyms I feel like working out in the cold am not really sweating so am not losing. All about motivation and being around people who will support you on this journey . Keep up this forum it is very good.

RNY because of GERD, not weight loss?

I am only 5 pounds overweight now but may need a revision to bypass for GERD
  12. @Gretamarie3 I was supposed to, and then they moved my surgery up one week so I just ended up doing just one. I had my bypass on the 8th. :)

    Stopping Ketosis

I would say most bypassers are not on ketogenic diets once they're a few months out. Many are at first, though. The only time my diet was ketogenic was during the liquid phase. Once that was over, my clinic promoted a more-or-less balanced diet (although I know many clinics recommend a low carb diet until you're in maintenance). Most of the WLS patients I'm friends with have been in maintenance for awhile (sometimes a long while). Some do Keto (or IF....or Weight Watchers) when they want to lose a few pounds, but otherwise their diets are fairly balanced. (btw - when I want to lose a few pounds, I count calories and watch my portion sizes - but different strokes for different folks...)

RNY because of GERD, not weight loss?

I am having the gastric bypass for GERD as well. My surgery is December 16, 2020 Did everyone here have to follow the two week diet?

Just Had DS - feel no different.

actually, it's a sleeve stomach with a partially bypassed small intestine (much more of the intestine is bypassed than it is with the gastric bypass, which is primarily a STOMACH bypass (although a little of the small intestine is bypassed with the gastric bypass, too)

Just Had DS - feel no different.

Duodenal Switch - A type of gastric bypass. I had one Monday. I have no idea what it does LOL.
  18. I have been dizzy to the point of nausea and have had moments where I have to hold onto something to keep from passing out because my vision tunnels. I haven't had the slightest clue what's happening. BP and blood sugar are normal. I had a nurse come to my home recently to draw labs for a life insurance policy I am applying for. The labs showed that I am spilling large amounts of protein into my urine. Everything that I have read online states that you don't spill protein into your urine from a high protein diet. Not to mention that my protein intake is minimal due to the size of my stomach. I called my sister who has been a nurse for 15 years to talk about the lab results. She told me to go use a urine ketone test strip, we have those on hand because my husband and oldest son are type 1 diabetics. Sure enough, off the charts. Here's the thing, most everyone of the forum is going into or happy they are in active ketosis. I, however am not and feel like its unnecessary. I had gastric bypass to permanently limit portion control and my diet will forever be changed. How is that not enough? I do not want to be in ketosis so I am slowly adding healthy carbs to my diet. Anyone out there have bad reactions to ketosis? I feel like I may be the only one with negative reviews on ketogenic but my kidneys are struggling right now. Seeing my primary care first thing tomorrow. I had labs right before my surgery and all was fine. 2 weeks post op and the diet is making me sick.

    Belly wrap

I had a bypass on Nov. 4, 2020. I was in pain for a month. The wrap didn't help me but may help you. A couple of days after surgery, I was readmitted because of uncontrollable watery/bloody leaking from the drain. Meds fixed that. Apparently, while not common, it happens. I had a lot of pain until Thanksgiving Day. I was thinking that I was just a wimp but that day I was in a ton of pain and the former site of my drain erupted in pus. Obviously I had an infection (no fever) and went to the ER. Two days, tons of fluids and IV antibiotics later, I felt like a new person. Of course you need to speak to your Doctor if the pain is intolerable or unusual. Hope you're pain free soon- take care!

    Lapband revision

I’m doing lap band to GB on dec. 17. I got my band in 2008 and it slipped in 2016. I originally got down to 190 with the band and up to 255 after it slipped. I had my bad refilled but it never worked the way it originally did and I was soooo hungry all the time, but eating was painful. My original surgeon’s PA whom I normally saw refused to talk about revisions. He said since I was so successful with the band that I could make it work again. Fast forward three years where I’ve gained 50 pounds and spent over $5k on medical weight loss diets, etc. I pleaded for help one more time and a different surgeon in the office agreed to help. I originally wanted the sleeve, but my (new) surgeon said she would only do GB after removing a lap band because of safety issues regarding scar tissue from the original surgery. She said if I got the sleeve she would have to staple through the scar tissue and it could cause leaking. I trust her judgment so I decided with GB. I too was having problem with pain while eating and I had acid reflux issues at night. I had my surgeon take the fill out of my band and feel 100% better, and oh so hungry. Good luck with whatever you choose to do!!

    Outpatient surgery

What surgery is this for? I'm having a bypass and the minimum stay is 2 nights. I haven't heard of day surgery for a bypass before, although I have for the band.

Just Had DS - feel no different.

By reducing the calories absorbed from food. I revised because I had some regain 6 years after sleeve. By the way, butter is not going to hurt you with DS because most of the fat you eat will not be absorbed. In fact, you want to eat some because otherwise things will be way too dry. Were you able to do much research on the DS separately from talking to the doctor? It is important to understand exactly how it works.

Just Had DS - feel no different.

Why was you revised if you don't mind me asking. How, if you've had the stomach reducing part is the DS going to hel you lose weight? This could be the answer im looking for LOL
  24. Circlesis

Just Had DS - feel no different.

In my experience, that has not been the case. I have had the sleeve, and was later revised to DS. There is no food that puts me on the toilet immediately. I do get gas more frequently but that’s about it. Sometimes these surgeons oversell.

    Nov 2020 Bypass Peeps?

I am the same...mini gastric bypass on Nov 19 and down 10. I’m hoping it’s our normal. My dietitian says it’s normal and not to concentrate on the number but rather on quality food, portions and recovery and all will happen. Hard to not be focused on the weight loss but i am confident we will all get to where we want to be. ❤️
