Has anyone gone with the Sleeve and experienced bad heartburn/GERD? Maybe you've wished you had gone with bypass instead? Tell me your sleeve/heartburn stories and what you've learned to avoid to calm the symptoms, or if you've had to switch to bypass... and are you glad you did?

3 months still having difficulties
Jaelzion replied to Yourbestfriend's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You're probably fine - there is a lot of variation in how quickly people recover and are able to eat more of a variety of food. But it would be good to mention this to your surgeon because there is a complication that can occur and results in the symptoms you describe. Here is a description of it: Strictures are a problem unique to the Bypass and Sleeve patients. Basically, it is a narrowing preventing food to pass normally through your digestive system. With the Bypass, strictures occur at the gastro-jejunal anastomosis (the top connection where the small bowel is attached to the gastric pouch). Sleeve patients can have a stricture anywhere along the length of the stapled stomach. A stricture will almost always occur within the first three months after surgery. Generally, a patient will complain of not being able to advance their diet beyond liquids. They may have frequent vomiting episodes, or even night time regurgitation/reflux. https://alohasurgery.com/strictures/ I doubt this is what's going on, but you are in that 3 month window when it's most likely to occur and it would be good to rule it out. Whatever is going on (even if it's just a normal slower recovery), your bariatric team can help you figure it out. Hope you feel better soon. Hugs. 🤗 -
I had bypass 22 months ago. I have never been able to eat high amounts of fat, even before surgery. A keto diet would kill me for sure! But since surgery, fat tolerance was even less at first. I have gradually been able to add more fat into my diet, but fat malabsorption has been evident since the beginning. It was most noticeable by light colored stools that float. They are more normal colored now, but still "floaties." I think I eat a lot of fat in the nuts, peanut butter, and seeds I consume, along with a small avocado nearly every day. But I find myself sort of craving fat sometimes. However, even when I try to eat more of it, I think it just goes right on through. My fat soluble vitamin levels have always been fine, and I will have those tested again in February. I am also going to talk to the Dietician about this, because if I crave fat, that must mean I am not absorbing what my body needs. That is the only malabsorption issue I think I have had with the bypass.

I'm not a revision, so maybe it's different, but I can handle fat. Not a TON of it - for example, I used to like to go out for Friday night fish fries prior to surgery - 2 or 3 breaded fried filets, French fries, cole slaw with mayo, roll with butter. I could never handle that now. I could maybe eat 1/2 of a fried fish filet, and anything else I ate with it would have to be low in fat. But I CAN eat it as long as I don't overdo it.

I'm 69 years old and was told that there weren't any age limits. Has anyone have surgery that was my age or near it? How did everything go? Does anyone think with my age it will be a lot worse? I already went through a gastric bypass surgery in 1980 at 30 and it was awesome hardly any pain. I know this time will be more difficult but I'm willing to try so I can possibly have a better quality of life. To be continued... -

Surgery for someone with no health issues
NicolePSU78 replied to LaoDaBeirut's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi, it looks like you have gotten alot of responses, but I thought I'd add mine to the mix. I am 42, 5'11 and was at the beginning 334lbs. When I scheduled my first appointment with my dr, they sent out a packet and it specifically pointed out calling my insurance to make sure that bariatric/weight loss stuff was covered. I called my insurance and they asked me if I had diabetes, and I said no. They said without being diabetic, it wouldn't be covered. <Insert tears and breakdown here> I was so frustrated because my first memories are of being fed diet jello, sugar free kool-aid, things like that, I have always been the chubby kid. I did richard simmons deal a meal, jenny craig, weight watchers, calorie restriction, keto.......i lost some weight, but always gained that but more back. I called my drs office and asked them if this is true and what other questions I should be asking. I have no 'comorbidities' aside from being morbidly obese and have been obese pretty much my entire life. I called back and talked to another agent who asked about diabetes again, then about high blood pressure and sleep apnea. I have none of them. Eventually they told me that if the doctor decided that my BMI put me int he morbidly obese category and that I had tried other diets etc and had a long history of being unable to lose weight, they would approve it. In the end, I had to go through my entire history of what diets/plans/meds I had tried, my weight history, etc and I was approved. I had my bypass surgery on 12/18/2020. I hope you are able to get it approved because it is frustrating. I know what would be waiting for me if I didn't get this weight off now, all of the comorbidities that they ask about, and i am hopeful that with this tool, I will be able to avoid all that crap. Best of luck to you and happy holidays <3 -
I'm now 15 weeks post op with bypass but have to say that sex for my hubby and I has been probably the largest plus to the surgery. I actually have had frequent bladder infections; sex was very painful for that the last years but it's much better now since the weight loss (down 100 lbs). Your start weight was much lower then mine, I don't know if your being so small now can make a difference with that. Sex drive is better for me now for the simple fact of body image and a new closeness with my husband but in the past I've take Maca and it helped a lot with sex drive. It's just an herb-takes about a week to ten days. I also am now in menopause-that can even make a difference. I think your Dr would have you see a gynecologists to be safe on that but I would run it by your surgeon at a next check-up. Great job on your weight loss!

Mrb1807 replied to healthy and fit @ 60's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Just an update : My surgery was Dec 15. RNY gastric -bypass : was walking around 2-hours after surgery, 1 night in hospital : Never nauseous, pain was MINIMAL ! NO gas cramps, My lower intestines' rumble from time to time but no pain. Since my surgery I have lost 20 LBs !!!!!! 8 days WOW I'm sure a lot of that has been water , but still nice to see.. I have no issues with anything I consume except really cold or hot stuff....so I just let it get to more of a normal temp. NO hunger at all, I have to remember to eat !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fluid intake are struggle to get to 32oz a day. I've had five surgeries before this one : appendix, molars, both knee meniscus tears, one knee twice. This by far has been a breeze compared the others : So each is different : but some of us come thru the procedure very well ! hope this is your case : BTW I was very Obese 380lbs 5"8" -
My GERD test is normal now what?
GreenTealael replied to nikki19rl's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Wait and speak to your surgeon because they may have a way that complies the results to get insurance approval (hypothetical example: insufficient weight loss + gastritis + esophageal emptying issues) But just so that you're aware if you are converted to RNY (not DS or SIPS), the gastric emptying time may be quicker because the pyloric valve is no longer used (unless your surgeon does a pyloric valve sparing procedure - I'm not sure those are perfomed for revisions but that's something to discuss with your surgeon). Good Luck ♥️ -
Stall, hair loss and other changes (warning, TMI)

Peel-n-eat shrimp! They are my number one go-to. My whole foods store sells ready to eat containers of 9 "jumbo" (not that big) chilled shrimp with cocktails sauce and 3 pieces are 2 oz. 2 oz have TWELVE GRAMS OF PROTEIN in them. If I can eat all 9 that's 36 grams of pro. Now... I've not been able to but I can eat 4 and then a few hours later eat 4 more (6 months post bypass). Also... I tried unjury and didn't like it. Genpro is SO much better. Tasteless. And finally as I believe others have already mentioned when you burn fat you release estrogen trapped in the fat and many people have re-started their periods after surgery due to that. I believe it's temporary. I went thru menopause at age 43 and was kind of hoping I'd start again after surgery... Nope. -
This makes sense to me. I have always wondered how we aren't killing our metabolisms with these months-years of under 1000 calories. I've been eating 1000 a day since month 4 post bypass and my weight loss has been SLOW. My surgeon's assistant suggested I go down to 800. I just thought... that goes against EVERYTHING we're told about a healthy body. I just keep eating 1000 and hoping my body will do what it's suppose to.

My GERD test is normal now what?
nikki19rl posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Okay. So I had my sleeve done back in October of 2017. I was doing really well and went down to 185lbs. I’m now back up to 235lbs. August of 2018 my father was diagnosed with lung cancer and passed in May 2019. So I feel of track and 7 days after he passed I found out I was pregnant which was very exciting and yet extremely difficult and I suffered from severe depression and just kinda gave up. I have always had reflux and issues with being sick to my stomach. My pregnancy made it worst and I have yet to lose my pregnancy weight and I feel stuck. So I have been seeing a surgeon about a revision. I’ve had several test done. I had a swallow study which said my esophagus isn’t emptying properly and a gastric emptying study done that came back as saying I have rapid gastric emptying, and my sleeve is only retaining 8% of what I eat in under 60 minutes. My Fluroro was normal and so was my EGD except for some mild gastritis. I just finished my Bravo test ( Ph test) for GERD and it came back as normal . I haven’t seen the surgeon yet, but was under the impression that if this test was normal then I won’t qualify for insurance to cover my revision surgery . I have BCBS Medicaid of Sc. I was wondering if anyone else had similar issues and were still able to get a revision or had any advice? I’m over the reflux and I’m shocked my test is normal.. HELP!.. -
Lots of problems no answers, 10 years out
AbbyRae1417 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had Rouen-y 10 years ago. I have had two kids since then and have regained all of my weight. Although that is a problem it's not the one that immediately concerns me. For a year I have been trying to figure out what is wrong with me. My symptoms are: sternum pain, chest pain and pressure, feeling of fullness when I haven't eaten anything, excessive painful bloating and gas, extreme sweating, racing heart, heart palpitations, and difficulty taking a deep breath. I have been to an allergist because they thought I had asthma, nope. I had an EGD and upper GI study done, they found little acid and a small hiatal hernia. The gastric bypass doctor put me on omeprazole which helps a little. My other doctor thought maybe it was anxiety causing the symptoms. I have tried numerous medications and have had tons of blood work! No one knows what is going on and they don't seem too inclined to figure it out. I can't keep feeling this way!!! Please help! -
Serious Teeth problems after gastric bypass several years ago???
Grammie2 replied to Grammie2's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I can understand the stomach acid causing teeth problems - did you have GERD issues before the surgery? I have had gerd issues for years before my gastric bypass, as well as dry mouth from my medications. Since my surgery I have no trouble with GERD at all, and was recommended bypass over the sleeve just because of my problems with GERD. So I still don’t see how the teeth issue is from Gastric Bypass. I can’t believe how much better I feel when I go to bed without having to sit up to sleep! And my teeth are getting mighty old, and need some crowns, so it will be interesting to see if they start decaying at a faster rate. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s hormone related?? -
Hello. I’m 5 months post op of gastric bypass. The past month or so I have pretty much stopped eating. I didn’t realize it at first (became less mindful of eating). I was busy and so stressed with school and work and I have yet to get back a feeling of hunger since surgery. So not feeling hungry, being super busy and stressed made me completely forget. Last week it hit me that I was not taking care of myself and I had to get back into it. I made two ounces of grilled chicken to try and I couldn’t do it. I didn’t want to. I had half of it and then felt guilty for eating. I keep trying to remind myself that I have to eat, but it feels like my mind is telling me not to. I’ve stalled in my weight loss for 3 weeks and I know it’s because I’m not eating. Exercising has become almost impossible because I’m feeling weak. Has anyone else gone from using food to cope, to using restricting food to cope? I feel like that’s what is happening to me and I don’t want to fall into that. How can I stop these thoughts and get back on track? Any suggestions would be much appreciated ♥️

TMI bloody stool, is it normal?
Katiebal_Lecter posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is about pooping, so if you’re grossed out by stuff like that please just scroll past this. I’m 5 days post op (lap band to gastric bypass) and finally had a bowel movement, my concern is that it was completely bloody. Not just like little drops here or there, but it seemed the turd was formed out of pure blood. I know a lot has gone on with my internal plumbing because of the surgery, but I am concerned. Has anyone had personal experience with this or know of any resources that might alleviate my concerns? I’ve already put a note in to my surgeon, but I want to see what “the people” have experienced. Thanks in advance for any information. -

Congrats! I am scheduled for Jan 28. I hv chronic lower back pain (3 dislocated discs) & had bi-lateral knee replacements 5yrs ago & a revision on the left knee 2yrs ago. most of my weight is in my stomach, so I'm hoping this will elevate some of my pain away(mainly in my back). I do want to walk & dance again w/o the pain. I hv already started the diet &lost 6lbs so I'm excited for the New yr! My birthday is in Feb so I'm looking for a Newer me very soon -
you can, but it's a really complicated surgery because they have to take down the RNY first, then do a sleeve - and then do the intestinal bypass part of the DS. Only about a half dozen surgeons in the US specialize in this.
-
Oops, when I read restriction I thought you had the sleeve done. Sorry but it's my understanding you can get a DS revision following gastric bypass. True You does do both sleeve and gastric bypass revisions.
