    November 2022 Surgery Buddies

Ugh, the 3 week stall is now extending well into week 4! I've gaining and losing the same 2 pounds since last Thursday 😭 Trying hard to trust the process... Hope everyone is doing well!
  2. I recently had a hiatial hernia tear. I had GERD before and after VSG. I am 12 years out. ( I am 66 years old, and my mother and grandmother had this issue also...) I had no idea, but wasn't feeling well. I work full time, and and fairly active - I garden, have chickens for fresh eggs, used to haul around 40 pounds of grain.... but couldn't the past few months. Go into my doctor, they did blood labs and sent me to the hospital. I needed 2 blood transfusions, and 4 days in the hospital to locate the bleeding... had endoscope and colonoscopy .... NOTHING WRONG WITH MY VSG. But i had also been taking meds for arthritis. So I had some gastric bleeding and the tear in the hiatus. After that I had iron infusion in the hospital and one each week for the next 6 weeks. I have been told not to take my oral iron, and next week I will be 3 weeks without iron infusions, so I go and get labs then. Will see if I can go without it or not. Meanwhile, I eat a ton of cooked (fresh spinach ) a week; and try to eat beef 3 time a week, to help it out. Will see how it goes. I go to an outpatient infusion clinic. The nurses are incredible and never miss my vein. and I am not an easy "stick". I get the 20 minute infusion and wait a half hour afterwards with a slow flush drip. Then I can go about my day.

    Food Before and After Photos

had my three girl friends over fir Christmas drinks & catch up. I always over cater & now my fridge is overflowing with leftovers. Sigh! Also have leftover bottles of champagne too which I don’t mind about. Made a baked Brie (baked with quince paste, vino cotto & served with toasted walnuts & fresh thyme). So delicious. Bought mushroom & fete, & spinach & feta quiche slices & some salads from Botanica who specialise in gluten free & vegetarian foods & vegan salads. (Did you discover them when you lived here @ms.sss?). The coffee pavlova with coffe cream & coffee drizzle was made by one of my girlfriends & another made the fruit salad. (Forgot to take some of the pxts before we started eating so they’re partially devoured.)
  4. I can't believe it. As of today, 7 months and 1 week since my surgery, I have officially lost 100 pounds!!!! I was 388 the day of my surgery. I cried this morning when I weighed myself. My next goal is to hit 270, which is what I weighed when I met my husband. After that, my last goal is to get to 200. Once I do that, I'll have to maintain it for a while and then SKIN SURGERY!!!!! There's no magic cure, no pill or food or drink that just magically makes the weight melt off. This is the result of the sleeve surgery, keto, working out 5-6 days per week (and alternating between cardio and weight training), and staying on track with what, and how much, I eat. No one thing works for me, it all has to be combined into a partnership for my mind and body. Surgery alone isn't enough. Keto alone won't work (at least it didn't for me). Working out by itself helps a little, but not enough. It ALL has to work together, and the key is to stay motivated and dedicated. Stalls suck, and they get frustrating. But as long as I keep my eyes on the prize, I'm actually gonna get there!!!! I never thought this was possible, but here I am

    August surgery buddies!

That's just great! Every week I take some more clothes to the thrift shop, and that continues even during a stall (like the last two weeks). And you're in the 100 club, too. Congrats!

    5day Gastric Sleeve Post op

More than craving, it was habit of eating, but that was gone by week 1. I still have leg cramps and tingling, I used to get them occasionally before surgery and sciatica pain, but it got worse since I was sitting and sleeping in the same position for a week. I use the heat pad before bed and when I walk a little more I only get it once or twice in the night time. Sent from my SM-G960U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

    October 2022 surgery support

My stall hit at around 2.5 weeks and lasted around 12 days. Then boom 10 pounds gone over a week. I've slowed again now and understand it's just going to be a process. I'm not getting frustrated since I know I'm losing lots of inches, my clothes are all baggy and people have started noticing in my face especially. It's just going to take time and sticking to the new way of eating. My doctor has me on about 600-700 calories for now. 80g protein, 50g carbs (usually don't come close on carbs), and 50g fat along with my 64 oz fluid each day. I'm still working on getting in everything I need to in a day.

    5day Gastric Sleeve Post op

I have leg cramps as well, been told it’s just my body readjusting. As for craving something I haven’t had any yet. Most of my craving were gone while on 3 week liquid diet. I still don’t feel hungry ever, and get full around 1/4-1/3 cup per meal. Surgery date December 5th.
  10. The grocery bill went down though because I went from not eating lunch & morning & afternoon tea to eating them it wasn’t as much of a drop as I expected. But boy oh boy replacing clothing was an expensive process. Was being very careful & buying very little as I was losing predominately just to supplement my old smaller sized clothing. I got caught because when I was at about goal I started buying more thinking I’d stabilise but I kept losing & dropped two more dress sizes. Had to be refitted for bras three times, twice replaced my knickers, twice replaced pyjamas & have shoes that are smaller than what I used to wear but bigger than what I wear now. The additional cost not many talk about. Plus it’s so exciting to be able to buy beautiful clothes, underwear & shoes in small sizes & things that are flattering & fit properly. Addiction transference??? 😁😁😁 Donated a lot of things, gave away a few shoes but still have quite a few clothes & shoes that are one or two sizes too big. Just in case.

    Gas problems and binder.

When is it a concern when I'm not really able to drink anything (even just water) without having so much gas coming up in my body/stomach? And not even burping it's like it's trapped or something 😕. I've been taking really small sips of every thing (cleat liquids right now) but it still happens anyway. I see my doctor next week Thursday but how this is feeling I don't know if I'll make it til then before going back to the hospital. Any suggestions? (I'm 😞 sorry for all the questions)
  12. From the album: Alicia’s gastric sleeve journey

The pic on the left is the night before my gastric sleeve surgery and the pic on the right is 2 weeks post-op. I’m down 15lbs so far I know I have a long way to go, but I wanted to share my progress!

  13. I have definitely been watching a lot of TV thankfully one of my favorite series I was able to find and it’s long so that should help, I think I just need to get through this week and then I’m on soft foods which definitely gives me a more variety of food which should help, I just wish I was stronger to do more activity than I do now, as I last about 15 mins then I get nauseous, which kinda sucks, I’m hoping that will get better as I recover, but thanks guys for the encouraging words it really does help a lot
  14. My surgeries were eye opening. I had surgery in March, where my surgeon discovered, my previous surgery was done wrong so he had to abort and close me back up. He had to assess the next steps to consider how to fix the issue he found. We made a plan and I had to wait three months for my next surgery. I had my 2nd surgery June 27th. Dr Chaisson was going to fix the issues he found the first time and do the revision. Surgery was expected to be 3 hrs but ended up being 8hrs long. This time, with a more thorough look at the anatomy, he found out my common channel was only 25cm long and my pouch was larger than expected. Both of those things mean that I never had a RNY bypass but a biliopancreatic diversion. So my surgeon had to fix the issues with my anamostasis to the pouch, resize my pouch and make my common channel longer. So it wasn't what we expected at all, my loss has been slow, but I've lost about 50lbs since June.

I’m approved for Jan 4th- excited but nervous- I have to start pre op diet on the 21st for two weeks
  16. Thank you everyone for your input! I do notice the hiccups, and the burping, which also happens when I’m not eating too. Also I had my first post-op appt on 12/7 this week I’m on liquids and puréed stage and my surgeon told me that the sleeve can hold up to 6oz so I’ve been consuming about 1/2 cup of food which is 4oz. I bought some ramekin bowls from Amazon they have different sizes I chose the 4oz ones and they’ve been great to use so I don’t have to measure 1/2 cup each time I eat since I have them to use as a guide. Good luck to everyone with their journeys pre-op and post-op!
  17. I paid for my surgery, but knew I was investing in my health and it will make up for it. So far our grocery trip is lasting almost 3 weeks and if I wanted I can make it to the month, since I can't have produce/fruits yet, and 1lb of protein is good for 10 meals, so I'm freezing some portions and my husband is eating from the protein I make. My blood pressure med is back to 5mg so my prescription of 3 months is going to last 6, have not been out to eat since Oct and even then I had started to only eat half of my portion and taking the rest home. I stopped drinking few weeks before surgery so we no longer have 2 boxes of beer in the pantry, no unhealthy snacks, or bread that goes bad. On the other side, my self esteem is coming back awd with that the wanting to shop lol but I have some clothes that do not fit and are new that I will wear till I hit the 100s, will mainly need bottoms, but once goal weight is hit, all bets are off [emoji1787] Sent from my SM-G960U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

how did surgery save you money?

Definitely the not paying the “clothing tax” anymore. Also, no double seats on flights, less in prescription costs, and my personal favorite- better car fuel economy! It’s crazy but instead of filling up every week I fill up every 2 and I’m driving the same amount or more.
  19. My surgery is next week (14th) . This is all good information. I appreciate it all. It will help me manage expectations and deal with the realities of sleeve. Good luck and thanks for being inspirations to those of us who are following you on this journey.
  20. ok we all know that bariatric surgery and the process leading to it is expensive. I couldn’t have afforded mine without some good insurance and financial assistance from my family to offset the costs.. But those of you post op, how has the surgery SAVED you money?? for me, I spend next to nothing on lunches (down from about $8 average a day) because I bring it from my home now and my total grocery bill is going down, saving even more. I was able to buy some new very cheap bras because my boobs have deflated but now getting to be more standard sizes… also am not stopping off for “treats” which probably is another $10-20 a week…. and bought work friendly shirts from Amazon for $20 rather than a specialty plus sized store for $30+++
  21. it takes a while to decipher the cues because it takes a while for them to fully develop while you are healing… i didn’t really start to feel things until i was on soft food and much stronger on regular food… i am 5 weeks po so still early on but ca. tell a big difference watch for hiccups, burps, feeling of pressure in throat, pressure in chest, heart rate or breathing changes, those are all cues people have reported (mine are stomach heavy feeling and hiccups)

    Surgery gass

It often takes a good week for the gas to escape. But burping & farting won’t help because the gas is actually in your abdominal cavity not in your digestive system. The pain occurs because it rises & settles under your lungs causing nerve pressure (the shoulder pain). It escapes by attaching itself to water molecules in your lungs & you breathe it out. So gentle activity like short walks (around your home, garden, street) as you’re able, marching on the spot, carefully lifting your arms up & down ( don’t pull on your tummy) & slow, deep breathing help the gas escape. A heat pad can also help ease the discomfort too. The pain on sipping is swelling from the surgery from where they inserted the breathing tube. Try warm drinks - warm water, green or herbal tea, even add room temp or warm water to your shakes. They are often more soothing than cool or cold liquids. It will get easier every day & will be gone in a couple more days.

  24. Hi, I’m Alicia. I just had the gastric sleeve done on 11/21 so I’m a lil over 2 weeks post-op and I know when I’m hungry, but I’m having trouble telling when I’m feeling full. Has this happened to anyone else in the beginning or in general after surgery? I try to really listen to my body when I’m eating, and eat slower, but I’m still unable to tell when I’m full. I normally just stop eating when I feel like its in my throat and it’s going down slowly. I’ve been avoiding throwing up and I don’t want that to happen, so that’s why I try to not finish everything I’m eating at the time. Any advice on how to tell when you’re full or feeling satisfied? Thanks in advance!

    Fighting Depression and Mental Exhaustion

I told my wife before I had surgery that I would at some point or another regret my decision. I told her that her job was to remind me why it did it in the first place. Thankfully I didn't have to rely on her reminders too much, but there were definitely some times when I questioned if it was worth it. The good news is it does get easier and the bad days are a lot more rare now. I mention this because I think it's important to remember that some of the best things in life are also REALLY hard. Losing weight, whether it's with or without surgery is one of those hard, but ultimately satisfying things. Part of that satisfaction comes from knowing you endured the trial and came out a better person on the other side. I"m now coming up on 3 months post op and I can legitimately say that even though I still struggle sometimes, living with WLS is so much easier now than it was at 4 weeks. You can do it, but you just have to grin and bear it for a while. These sayings may sound trite, but reminding myself that "This too shall pass", and "It's a marathon, not a sprint" are what got me through the hard days.
