Share Your Keys To Success! How did you maintain your weight loss (Stay In Maintenance). Come on spill your secrets!
summerseeker replied to Mspretty86's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am 3 years out this month. I track my food religiously every day. I try to eat clean and cook almost all of my food. My calories are on average 1500 a day and as this was my first trial number at maintenance, I was lucky. I don't restrict myself to diet foods. I eat full fat versions. It eat good quality food, even chocolate. I weigh myself every few days. My exercise is limited to walking a few miles, a few times a week. Oh and window shopping in town, once a week. I also stay on this site and read it almost every day as it seems to keep my focus. -
Report Your WINS ..What is your today's win??🥇
FifiLux replied to Mspretty86's topic in Rants & Raves
Last night I felt the need for a walk so even though it was -2c / 28f I decided to go around the block and post my Christmas cards. Didn't plan to post them until at the office next week (and they won't be collected by post any earlier) but it was great to get out for a 1.5km brisk walk. In the olden pre-op days I would have ignored the feeling and just stayed on the sofa with popcorn and tv. I had also earlier walked to and from the dentist, normally I would have taken a bus so that was another few km done in the day. -
lol no, not at all i am just a ridiculous exercise addict these days. started in the summer and now i just can't seem to stop...i actually feel BAD (mentally and physically) if i don't do SOMETHING every day. i am paying the price though...my body just feels worn out every day now when i'm at rest. the only thing that makes the pain and achiness go away is more exercise. its a vicious cycle honestly. the weight loss is not on purpose. i got myself braces in September, and my total annoyance of having to clean my teeth after every single time that i eat something, has effectively stopped me from snacking. so i'm eating less overall and its showing on the scale (and my abs! lol). i started adding an afternoon protein shake about 2 weeks ago and gained back 2-ish lbs....(two weeks ago i was down 13 lbs, today i'm down just down 11 lbs since september) BUT...i have to say that i actually kinda like that i lost that bit of weight (how's that for body image issues?!?!). but i also know i need to eat more for health's sake.

@SpartanMaker is on point as usual. 😊 Many surgeons initially patients on a fairly general supplement regime to begin usually including a multi vitamin, calcium and iron. There are variations. Some may include vitamin D and/or vitamin Bs as well. However, your regular blood tests, medical history, type of surgery all will influence what supplements you’ll need before surgeon, post surgery or in the long term. Plus some surgeons have restriction on swallowing tablets in the initial weeks post surgery which will dictate how you take the supplement (gummie, patch, …). While sleeve surgery usually does not usually require long term supplementation due to malabsorption you may be someone whose body reacts in a way that means you will need specific supplements. Or it may be discovered you are lacking in a particular vitamin, or your diet is lacking in certain nutrients. Another consideration is if you also have gall removal with your surgery or after as that can result in malabsorption issues in some. For example, I had a sleeve I was required to only take a multivitamin and a Vit D/K. My pre surgical blood work and subsequent 3 monthly tests (actually I was having more as my GP was monitoring them too) showed I wasn’t lacking in anything. At around 8 months my surgeon okayed going off the vitamins. The regular blood tests did eventually historically show I had a drop in vitamin D in winter (when I hibenate and bundle up). Consequently I take a Vit D/K (as a mouth spray) in winter. My gall was removed two years post sleeve and I now have issues absorbing protein and certain medications. Yes supplements are expensive especially if you are taking a lot & taking them long term. Finding a balance between economies and quality can be a challenge. I do recommend looking for a reputable brand (ask for referrals from your doctor, dietician, pharmacist or people here like Alex Brecher) as it is an industry in which quality and standards are not defined nor monitored like with prescribed medications.

Going back a step?
Bypass2Freedom replied to NeonRaven8919's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Also just to add, in those initial weeks post-surgery, my team recommended that I limit each meal to around 8 mouthfuls (using children's cutlery), just because the signals which tell us we are full aren't healed just yet, and that limited the over-eating! -
Co-Codamol & Bypass
NickelChip replied to Bypass2Freedom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm going to preface this by saying I am not a doctor and definitely in no position to give healthcare advice, but the most recent studies seem to indicate that very occasional ibuprofen use after a bypass does not significantly increase your risk of ulcers. Not all doctors are up on the research and some just don't want to change their advice on the off chance a patient has an issue, but some doctors will outright say that if you take an ibuprofen or two for a really bad headache or that one time you have an unusual pain, it's fine. You just don't want to exceed maybe once in a week or a few times in a month. The study I read looked at outcomes for thousands of bypass and sleeve patients in Denmark who had been prescribed daily NSAIDs for less than 30 days or more than 30 days, and then looked at how many developed ulcers. Only the bypass patients who took them for more than 30 days had an incidence rate higher than the general population. -
2 weeks post op with minimum restriction and present hunger
Lisa Gilkison replied to KaterinaC's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am 1 week 9 days out. When I first came home, I felt so hungry several times. I was thinking, this is my life now. I'm always going to have a growly stomach. But then I read somewhere that our stomach still needs to learn our new signals for hunger. Also, we have head hunger. Our brain has to learn the new signals as well. So, I am keeping the prescribed diet until my body can learn to communicate. In addition, some of those hunger signals could be thirst signals. So, making sure I drink enough water does help. -
I did the small meals throughout the day too. Mine is every three hours but I have alarms set to remind me or I would never remember because I don’t feel hungry either. Speaking of jerky. Chomps brand makes a turkey jerky that is pepperoni flavored that’s really good. That and cheese sticks are super convenient for on the go. Ooh and the yogurt drinks if you can find one that relatively clean. I did find one but it’s pricey so I started making my own. It’s really easy just Greek yogurt, milk and fruit in a blender. i use a container of non fat plain greek yogurt, 1/4 cup berries and 1/2 cup of almond milk. I just drink it out of the nutra bullet cup if I’m home but I also wash and reuse the containers from the ones I purchased to take on the go. They are $4 each in the store for the ones without added garbage and I always have fruit and almond milk on hand that usually goes to the waste anyways so I just have to buy the yogurt which is a lot cheaper than 4 bucks each.

Question for post op surgery and matcha
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to Elizabeth Miller's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I drink matcha every day and I also have mushroom coffee. It comes out to about 60mg of caffeine total per day. Less than a regular cup of coffee but juuuuust enough to give me a little bit of "get up and go". I stayed away from all caffeine for about 6 months, then had matcha twice per week for 2 months, then added the mushroom coffee twice per week 2 months after adding the matcha. Now I drink them daily and it's all good. -

Accurate Macro Calculator
SpartanMaker replied to AmberFL's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think the way I'd put it it's best to is nail down your calories first, then depending on your goals, you can tweak your macros to better accomplish your goals. Since you're looking to drop a few more pounds and limited in terms of workouts right now, I'd probably recommend something more like this: 1600-1700 total calories a day. You could go as low as 1400 or so, but you may feel lousy if you do, so don't go that low for more than 2-3 weeks at a time. Target ~1.5 grams per kg of protein, or more. Thus ~115 grams minimum. If you are not struggling to get up to say 150 grams or so, that certainly won't hurt and may help you feel better. Fats around 70 or so should be just fine and will mean you're likely to be less hungry. You can go lower if you're comfortable doing so, but it will likely mean you're hungrier. Don't go below about 50 grams. Whatever's left over, make up for in carbs. -
To everyone who has responded....thanks, lets keep in touch and get a good start to our journey. I look at this surgery as a new volume in my book, not a new chapter. I'm not looking back and I will be able to not only lose weight to feel better, but I will be able to get the much needed hip replacement. I'm due to have surgery on the 12th of May, signed my consents today, got my pre-op class done and met with the surgeon and he was quite pleased with my weight loss and my A1c both have gone down. I'm just as eager to get rolling on this new journey. What is next is the clear liquid diet a few days before surgery as they found I do not need to be on a liver reduction diet. I have my supplements as instructed, I have protein water for after surgery. We have 4 days of clear liquids only, then we can go on a soft diet, we don't have a puree, which is a blessing, I can't imagine eating chicken in a puree form, can't have meet until day 11. I'm taking this seriously, and will follow all the rules. I think I am more excited than anything for the 12th of May to come. Ealbers, you are right on track, let's get on with the journey. CJPom, you are first on the list being May 7th, let us know how you are doing post surgery. Jena, we will do this as a team, let's keep each other motivated!!! Congratulations to everyone! Every week, find a win other than is on the scale. Don't check your weight every day, it will fluctuate as your body adjusts and changes. Find other wins to celebrate, but don't stop celebrating. This is not just weight loss, but it is a metabolic shift in our bodies. Movement is important so let's keep walking. WendyJane

Looking for Inspiring Stories - Gastric Bypass Journeys!
AmberFL replied to Justarwaxx's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Congrats on how well you have been doing!! I had the gastric sleeve and would love to share my story The good: I had my surgery on January 24, 2024, and I am now almost one year post-op. I reached my goal weight about seven months after the surgery and have been maintaining it within a +/- 3-pound range. Once I started weightlifting, I noticed a significant transformation in my body, which has kept me motivated because I am starting to love what I see in the mirror. I have gone from a size 2/3X top to an XS/S top, and from size 18 pants to size 4. I never imagined my body could look and feel this good. My health has vastly improved, and I have so much energy. I am happier, and that positivity radiates from me. The bad/challenges: I still experience episodes of binge eating, although it is not as severe as it was before. However, when I'm not being mindful, I tend to grab chips and eat too many, or take mini candies and other snacks that I shouldn't have. I am aware of my actions, but for some reason, I don't seem to care in the moment. It has happened maybe two to three times, and each time, I feel really angry with myself. I recognize that this is something I need to work on, and I'm conscious of it. I understand that this will be a lifelong challenge for me, but I am actively working on it and taking it one day at a time. I tend to be hard on myself because I am so afraid of going back to my old habits. This is a second chance at life and I want to make the most of this! Everyone has their own journey. We will all face challenges and struggles, but for the most part, this is an amazing tool! Make the most of it in the first 12 to 18 months. Take advantage of the rapid weight loss, work out, and engage in activities that intimidated you when you weighed more. Take risks, because I promise you will be so happy that you did! -
Saturday was crazyyyyyy for me. I went off my rocker, I snacked and grazed all day. I started my period Friday even and Saturday I was bitchy and wanted all the food. Sunday I felt like crap almost like a hang over. I didn't track my food, I didn't worry about my protein, I did work out that morning though, but still No bueno, but I am back on track and just let that day be. However these last two or three periods have been me fighting back eating the whole house but this last one I lost the battle LOL

Finally on the other side!
RuizAyres replied to NeonRaven8919's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I don’t start taking my vitamins until 2 weeks later and then just add each one at a time period. NeonRaven8919: no gas pain? If not how great! -
It will happen soon don't worry so don't spend a lot of sizing down as I have found that I buy something and then a few weeks later it is too big already. Buy cheap if needed, belts have been great.

Maybe some newbies will benefit from this answer, too....
ms.sss replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i use the weight i was on my first day of my 2 week pre-op diet (235 lbs which happened to be my highest weight recorded). p.s. my weight when i had my very first consultation 2 years prior to that was lower...i think it was like 220 or something. there is a statistic where you can input your weight on day of surgery, but it's just not included in the summary under your name in the side bar.... @Alex Brecher...maybe we can include "weight on surgery day" in the side bar info? -
Almost 7 weeks post op and already failed
GreenTealael replied to NeonRaven8919's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
You have NOT failed. Please stop catastrophizing. You are only 7 weeks post op. Super duper early. There are literally more options now than ever before to aid you on this journey. Tell your team you are struggling and need help. It’s very likely you need more than just the sleeve and white knuckled willpower but what that looks like is ultimately up to you. You’ve come this far already, so you know you’re committed enough to make lifestyle changes. Please keep going. ❤️ -
Liver shrinking diet pre -op?
BabySpoons replied to Bessieboop1981's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had to do the liver shrinking diet pre-op for 2 weeks. 2 shakes a day then I ate a bag of frozen stir fry vegetables with 3 ounces of lean chicken or beef season fried in soy sauce for my evening meal. It was delish. I lost weight. High volume, low calorie. I'd enjoy the food while you can. JS -
You’re in the OMG I really did it stage & where buyer’s remorse can begin. Give yourself some grace. First you’ve had a pretty major surgery which puts a lot of stress on your mind and body. It will take a good 6 weeks or so to fully heal and recover: be gentle on yourself. There will be good days and not so good days but in a few weeks you’ll start to feel more like yourself. You’re 4 days out it’s impossible to be failing yet. Unless you’re downing bottles of soda and consuming burgers and fries, cake and ice cream. Focus on your plan and your surgeon’s instructions for this week only. Next week look at what you need to do for your second week and so on. It can be information overload so work so forgive yourself if you misunderstand or miss something. Oh, & don’t be surprised if you can’t meet your fluid and protein goals to begin. As long as you’re making an effort you’ll get there eventually. We’ve all been where you are at some stage and to varying degrees. If you worry about what you’re doing, check in with your team or post here. Guarantee others here will have had the same question or experience. It does get easier as each week passes.

Weirdest None-Scale-Victory - I'll go first
NeonRaven8919 replied to chiquitatummy's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm back in the US for two weeks at the end of this months (I'm a Montana girl no matter how long I've lived in the UK) and I'm hoping I can hit all the thrift stores while I'm there. There's a few thrift stores here, but not so many that have plus sizes. I'm guessing I'm a UK 20 (US 18) now so still a plus size. -
I agree with @SpartanMaker, @ShoppGirl. You can’t spot lose weight/fat. But be careful building muscle in your thighs as they could end up bigger. I have three pairs of slim legged pants I can’t wear anymore because they became too firm in the legs. Weight hadn’t changed. Pants still fit perfectly in the waist & around the butt but the thighs, and calves in one pair, nope. Waah! And no they didn’t shrink in the wash. (Remember when we used to use that as an excuse -lol!)

Today was my one month post op appointment and I gave her my phone with the summary of all my macros for the past week since I’ve been on soft food and a “normal” portion size (3/4 cup) and told her my current steps and she was really happy. I was worried that since my stomach was not operated on and I can tolerate foods and the larger portion of the range that I was eating too much for a month out and she said that with my level of activity I actually need to increase my protein a bit and the carbs as well and that my calories were fine to go up with that. She said that my loss is excellent and to keep doing what I’m doing just to increase my protein to 90g. She even said that I can add more veggies and some other foods as tolerated. I was worried about trying like asparagus and corn or rice paper (I’ve been craving spring rolls since I seen a recipe while on purée). I had already done my grocery order for this week and was going after there to pick it up so I added them rice papers to my cart for next weeks grocery run. I went ahead and scheduled my appointment for next month but she said that if I am still doing this well I can reschedule to my three month for my labs. I’m pretty excited! I did not feel like this after my sleeve. I feel like I have a handle on this, I am actually enjoying the healthier foods and the exercise. My energy's and my mood have improved tremendously. . -
Congratulations on making your decision to take your life back. Only those who are obese truely understand how limiting and challenging it is as well as its impact on you psychologically and emotionally. There are a number of reasons why people undergo a revision from sleeve to bypass: they develop GERD, weight regain, don’t lose as much as they hoped. Don’t know the rate of this occurring. Doesn’t mean this will happen to yiu.I know people who have had a revision on this forum and people who haven’t. Personally I have three friends with a sleeve all between 4 & almost 7 years out and no revisions. I ‘m 5.5 yrs out with my sleeve and am happy with it & my younger brother just had one done. But we’re all different & the surgeries work in different ways to different people. Sometimes surgeons will recommend bypass over sleeve because of the weight their patient has to lose, weight loss and gain history, pre-existing conditions (like GERD, etc.), etc. Are you able to ask why the surgeon/clinic is encouraging you down the path of a sleeve rather than bypass as this is less common (more common to recommend bypass over sleeve). My cyclical side wonders if it’s because a sleeve is a less complicated surgery, takes less time to perform and sometimes doesn’t require an overnight hospital stay. So do they want you to have a sleeve because it’s less demanding on their services. Ultimately it should be your decision as to which surgery you get. Have a look at some of the you tube videos by Dr Matthew Weiner (pound of cure) & Dr John Pilcher. They cover many topics so you’ll need to work through quite a list (great resources for you post surgery) & will have some on the differences and benefits of the different surgeries. All the best.
