3 weeks post op- seeking compassionate mentor
Jolly replied to Samantha Mysiewicz's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Me too! Actually just shy of 3 weeks. How are you doing on the purée diet? I had revision from lapband to bypass. Turns out there was an uncommon problem with my port. After 5 years it was causing pain and upon extraction they found some significant issues. Anyway looking to the future. Still sore with a lot of bruising but out and about doing a little Christmas shopping. Missing eating out with friends and the occasional margarita! Let me know how you’re doing! -
Yeah, I just re-read all the posts, you guys are talking about Toradol. It's only given in IV or thru an injection. It's a wonderful drug. I had to have it with Dilaudid for kidney stones. Docs said it was ok because it wAs bypassing stomach.

I had an ablation after our third kid e cause I have a large fibroid in my uterus. We did the ablation to not only stop my cycle but to see if the fibroid would die off or stop growing. I have had it since I was preg for my first child.....11 years ago. So after our third because the surgery to remove it was too dangerous with my knowledge of how complicated my preg were and breaking everything in that area due to an accident several years ago. The ablation was the best thing we did, but the fibroid did not change so no dr would touch the removal of the fibroid due to size and where it's pushing inside due to the fact I did not so well after three kids each one did something else to my lower body section and I couldn't loose any of the weight due to the pain the fibroid caused, thus 11 yrs is enough and I just had the bypass last Wed and once I am down some weight they will be able to remove the fibroid. Can't wait. Sorry for the end, just wanted to tell you the ablation was one of the best things I have done for myself medically and if you are done with children and have a medical need. I highly recommend it! Best of luck with yours.

Thursday, June 5th...I'm sooo nervous!!! HELP!
Cadets71 replied to Love2Lose's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Marie, I am going to be banded tomorrow as well...so I totally understand the nerves! Yesterday was worse than today in that regard. I felt teary and just an emotional wreck. However, I have no doubt that I have made the right choice. I am sure there are cases where gastric bypass might be a better option but not for most of us. It's been the surgery of choice in Australia and England for years! We won't be malnourished for the rest of our life and our body parts are all intact. That's enough reason for me! I am at peace that it will take time and hard work. I think we will be just great after we get past the surgery tomorrow. Just remember you are not alone. Lots of of will be in the same "place" tomorrow and we are all here to help support one another. Take care and check back in when you can. Hugs and good thoughts... -
I am African American and keloiding is more common. It happened to me with my lap band surgery five years ago and the scars have gotten better but are still quite noticeable. My surgeon tried to revise them a little when he did my sleeve but they are still quite noticeable. I am five months out.

Anemia despite high dosages of iron
Djmohr replied to StefanieSparklePants's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am sorry this is happening to you. I am guessing you are younger and not post menopausal. I did not reading about this issue early on and honestly you can adjust your diet but the deficiency may not be overcome solely through diet and supplements or infusions may be your only option outside of having a revision that changes your surgery so that more of the Iron from the food you eat is absorbed. So many think that malabsorbtion in bypass ends after a period time. I cannot find anything that confirms that, everything I have read states it will continue and that is why we are on Vitamins for the rest of our lives. I really hope that your doctor can find a solution that works for you and I hope that you feel better soon! -
I was revised from sleeve to RNY yesterday. Today I can do way more than sip water, Propel, and crystal light. Am I correct in assuming that liquids are going straight through like a slider and that I have nothing to worry about other than liquid, protein, and vitamins?

What made you choose this surgery vs others?
GBLady41 replied to bigjim1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm pre-op and every bit of information I have gathered says that bypass patients have just as much opportunity to keep the weight off as those that get the sleeve. I'm choosing bypass because I have LPRD (laryngopharyngeal reflux disease), which is worse than GERD because the reflux goes higher in the throat and can irritate the vocal cords. I'm also choosing bypass because not only is it a restriction and malabsorption surgery, but it is also a metabolic surgery, as it changes your brain's weight threshold to the lower, healthier weight. The surgery also changes the chemical balances in the brain to make you less hungry or not hungry at all, up to six months, depending on the individual. The surgery is reversible. And it is the "gold standard" of all weight loss surgeries, and will remain as such. I also wanted to get as few surgeries as possible, and with over a hundred pounds that I need to lose, I'm excited to get the bypass. Everyone is different and you have to do what is going to work for you. Best wishes. ???? -
I'm a newbie and so happy to see these responses. I had a mini-bypass on 4/27 with Dr. Illan. I can drink as much as I want, hot or cold and any kind of fluid. I can gulp too. It freaks me out how fast I can drink something so I purposefully take it slow. I easily get in 80oz+ a day in fluid. My incisions and drain have healed nicely. I only have a bit itching and tugging if I twist too fast. I stopped pain meds in the hospital because I don't like taking them and they make me sick. I've been drinking clear proteins and bone broth to get in my recommended 40+ grams this week. I'm only taking in about 300 calories a day though. I gained weight after surgery but have slowly started losing it now. I'm really scared to try full liquids. I'm worried about lactose tolerance because I love the Premier Proteins and I'm terrified of dumping.

Hello everyone I am 18 month post op and if many of you have heard my stories will understand that I been through a lot since I had Surgury. Unfortunately I have had many complications and recently I was put on TPN which is iv nutrition for the second time. The reason I had gastric bypass was because I had severe erosion in my esophagus and had esophagitis and my surgeon told me that I could develop esophagus cancer. I was also overweight for my height. I am 4"11 and I was 189 pounds before Surgury. I would aspirate in my sleep and had the worse reflux ever. Now I have been very depress and feel so much regret since I lost so much weight. The surgeon is trying to figure out why is it that I keep losing and can't gain weight on my own. Last week I was 90 pounds and since on TPN I have gained 6 pounds. I am 96 pounds now. I was advice to see someone for Theapy but I want to be able to move on normally. Has anyone experience depression or regrets? Also I have had so many Surgury and never was able to fully workout and now I see sagging skin on my legs, arms and belly and feel more depress. I don't want to have more Surgury but I am trying to deal with all these emotions. Any suggestions will be appreciated. I am very Down and feel hopeless of life. I get teary and guilt is to much to handle. Thanks for reading my post and looking forward to hearing what you all think or advice.

Welcome Trevor. Mini-gastric bypass is not that common in the States. Your procedure is different than gastric bypass and your requirements post-op are different. Therefore try not to become too confused when you read the posts because many people have different surgeries than yours. You might want to repost under the Mini-gastric bypass page at http://www.bariatricpal.com/forum/1111-mini-gastric-bypass-surgery-forum-new/

Any St. Louis/Metro Area Sleevers out there?
MxKitty replied to Nikki Monroe's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Dr Snow & Dr Van Wagner no longer share a practice as of Feb 1st. I will call Dr Van Wagner's office though and see if their nutritionist takes outside patients. Thanks so much!!! Hello! I am new here and am seeing Dr. Snow, also (though I live in the Festus area). Have my 5th out of 6 dietitian appointments on monday before I can be officially approved for the sleeve. I have been seeing the dietitian in Dr. Wagner's office and before the first of the year, visits were free. After the split, I pay $20 copay, but can still see her. Oh that's fantastic! I did email her earlier today to see if she's accepting new clients since I didn't see her before my revision. Thanks again for sharing Best of luck at your last appointment & on your weight loss journey! -
oh, bless you, you poor thing. I had a volvulus (remnant stomach twisted tightly and cut off blood supply, made me very ill) post op and was converted to a bypass 1 week after my sleeve, in agony, couldn't drink, let alone eat also ended up with a picc line but the conversion to bypass fixed me kinda (still having issues eating) no TPN for me but headed that way if I can't get my intake and nutrients up. I'm also a nurse so have given TPN a lot. Are you able to consume anything? What's going on with your gut and bowel? Big virtual healing hugs coming your way x

I was completely for the sleeve at my first consultation, but they recommended the bypass, because of the diabetes and gerd. So, it just made more sense after they broke it down for me. And I've been looking at how the surgery is done on youtube. I'm not scared, but I'm anxious to get it over and done with. -

Yes, I have heard that from others, too. The bypass must do something with all the "re-routing" that helps. I don't have GERD and I sure don't want to have it! My mother and several relatives are plagued by it ????. -

You can't speak on bypass complications if you don't have a bypass.I had a bypass and I have no complications. -
At 2 months post-op, this is what my typical day is like. Breakfast options: 1 single serving non-fat greek yogurt with about 1/4 cup fruit, some torani sugar free syrup, a sprinkle of Eggface's Protein granola or some sliced almonds. 4 of Eggface's "bites" (I make them with turkey sausage and shredded apple for breakfast) 1 scrambled egg with a healthy spoon of Jimmy Dean turkey sausage crumbles, sometimes wrapped in a mission low carb whole wheat tortilla (I can't eat it all if I wrap it in the tortilla) lunch: tuna salad, chicken salad, turkey ham salad, etc made with olive oil mayo and crunchy veggies (usually about 1/3 cup), with cucumber slices leftovers from dinner "lettuce wrap" made with 2 slices of lunch meat, 1 slice of sargento thin sliced cheese, wrapped in lettuce leaf. Usually dipped in home guacamole. I buy the 100 calorie packs from Wholly guacamole. Dinner suggestions: crock pot salsa chicken- cook a couple of chicken breasts with about 1/2 cup salsa and then shred the meat. I make it into "tacos" by adding some shredded lettuce, veggies, etc. Eat in a lettuce wrap or in a low carb tortilla. This always leaves plenty of leftovers for lunch the next day grilled fish, chicken breast or turkey burger (I use my George Forman grill) and make sure they stay moist! turkey meat balls with a little sugar free spaghetti sauce and veggies such as zucchini, mushrooms, black olives, etc veggies: well cooked cauliflower squash zucchini green Beans sweet potato (not often, it's a treat) mushrooms onions lettuce cucumber slices Snacks yogurt (if I didn't have it for breakfast) apple slices (no skin), sliced super thin with sugar free almond butter or string cheese hard boiled egg Eggface's "bites" turkey meatballs with a smear of barbeque sauce lower fat cheese Good luck! If you haven't found it yet, go to www.theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com. She is a Gastric Bypass patient but the recipes all work for us too! Wonderful ideas, even for early post-ops.

Where Are You in Your Weight Loss Journey?
szavala22 replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Banded 1/29/13 down 53 lbs and feeling great. My Doctor says my progress is better than his Gastric bypass surgery patients. I love the compliments lately. Broke fom having to buy new clothes, but that's not a bad thing I guess. I love my band. -
Hello there! I was wandering if anyone has been diagnosed with Barrett's Esophagus and, if so, what impact it had on your choice of procedures. I have GERD and a hiatal hernia and during a scope prior to gallbladder surgery, it was discovered I also had Barrett's Esophagus (a pre-malignant condition where the cells of the esophagus begin to change and become more like the cells in your stomach). I have chosen to have the sleeve even though the bypass is still considered the preferable treatment when you have Barrett's. I was just wandering if anyone has been faced with Barrett's and what, if any, information you might be willing to share about your experience. I feel alone in this regard but I know that can't possibly be the case. I'm fairly new to this site, but I have learned so much from everyone already! Anything you can add would be greatly appreciated!

I'm looking at other's post and every seems to be doing so well with no regrets. I just had a piece of salmon and threw it up. I want to cry. The only thing I can seem to keep down is quiche. I'll fill out my profile but in the meantime I had the sleeve in 2012 and I just had a bypass revision on July 27th. So far I've lost 30 lbs. Thank you for your words of wisdom. It helps a lot.

I would be more than willing to talk if you wanted to. I am just coming up on 3 months post op gastric bypass surgery.

Jayzer, I am so there with you. After all my research I would not do the band as 82% eventually get a revision to a sleeve. Why go through this twice??? Also, I have my sister who is supportive but there is no way I am telling Mom till afterwards. She has always been after me about my weight and I know what would come out of her mouth..."you can do this on your own, you've done it in the past before" EXACTLY, and have gained it back and then some. The VSG will be just the tool I need to regulate my potions sizes which I am not capable of doing. Please keep me posted on your journey. I have 2 months left of the 6 month supervised diet for my insurance so I should have my sleeve end of Sept or early Oct. By the way, this is not a cop out, we have tried in the past but we (do to genertics or metabolism or whatever) can't keep weight off like skinny people do. WE NEED THIS TOOL!!!!

While on my weight loss journey, I've been learning to drink water. I discovered that I really liked higher alkaline water, so I kept drinking it and started wondering if there was a reason I preferred it. Then, I read this article http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22844861. Now, that I think about it, my GERD isn't nearly as bad when I'm drinking pH8+ water. Has anyone experienced this? Also, maybe it might help someone having lapband GERD issues. That's the reason I'm having revision surgery.
