  1. It depends what is on your plan right now. You can mix Protein powder with greek yogurt, sf pudding, Soup (not too hot), mashed potatoes (if allowed), etc. I'm on mushy foods and added it to roasted butternut squash (puree). I'm allowed veggies and fruit on my plan - but it's not as low carb as some want to be.
  2. Healthy_life2 and Fluffy gave some great advice. They are very knowledgeable, and a treasure to this board. I’m only a month out, but the memories of the first couple of weeks are very fresh. It was rough. I felt like getting my liquids and some protein in was a full time job. Drinking is a lot easier now. By week 3 I could eat very soft cheese (like laughing cow), eggface’s ricotta bake (that recipe is LEGIT), high-protein low-carb yogurt, soft scrambled eggs, puréed salmon spread. Week 4, last week, I was able to add in some softly cooked brown meat chicken (I have a Sous vide, so it’s easy to keep it soft and not overcook it, I highly recommend that gadget) and softly cooked salmon. I could get in about 1/8 - 1/4 cup in. I have to go very slowly, like taking 20-30 minutes to eat it, and chew the daylights out of it. I’ve progressed to being able to try little bits of most types of meats. I’m still learning to listen to my body’s signals that it’s full, so I go by measurements. 1/4 cup of food per meal, 3 meals per day, and 1 protein shake for a snack (half in the afternoon, half in the evening/night). I can add bits of salsa, etc. for flavor, which keeps down the monotony. I’m still going to be chewing for a long long time, and may forever. It’s not a bad thing. I enjoy my meals a lot more. I can add in non-starchy veggies in at the 3 month mark, as long as I’m getting the protein in. The chewing a ton and not drinking water 1/2 hour before and 1/2 hour after a meal were some of the behaviors that I had to develop prior to surgery. My program was pretty rigorous, but I think it prepared me fairly well. You’ll get used to this new way of being. There are so many wonderful proteins and non starchy veggies out there. I’m still going to indulge in fruit here and there, but it will be a bite of fresh strawberry, or a blackberry off a vine or a huckleberry or two while I’m hiking. And I will enjoy the hell out of it.
  3. alright i will stop buying fruit salads, too bad the lentils, beans and tuna all make me feel nauseated after 1-2 spoons maybe i'll stick to liquid protein (shakes and Greek yogurt) for 1 more week.

    August 2023 Surgery Buddies!

I get your frustration. I gained 5 lbs after Christmas and it just wasn't coming off. Last week I graduated off of Hint water and can now drink any water however I did change my diet. I know this is going to sound weird but it worked for me and I'll be 67 in a few weeks. I eat high protein, no sugar, sweetened with erythritol yogurt then my coffee with a small amount of sweetened flavored creamer and whipping cream. Lunch is usually a protein bar and a cheese stick. Protein bar is sweetened with the erythrirol.. Then the snacking begins - I make jello cubes out of unflavored beef gelatin, monk sugar and allulose, unsweetened kool aid and water. I make it thick and cut into 1/2" cubes. Place a hefty serving into a baggy and I can eat as many as I want. I snack from 3 til 8 on jello cubes, not non stop but maybe 3 baggies worth. I too was hungry all the time until I started eating the jello cubes. IDK why it works but in 5 days I lost 6 lbs. I pee non stop but that's ok with me. My jello cubes are about 35 calories a baggy but it's all protein and if you take a tryptophan with it it becomes a complete protein plus its tons of collagen. I've lost a lot of hair the past 6 weeks so trying to fight that. My surgery was 8/14 and so far I've lost 91 pounds (lost 45 before my surgery). I need new knees something awful so highly motivated. 17 lbs to go. I did join the gym 2 weeks ago in preparation for the new knees. Gotta get these old legs strong again. I hope things break for you soon.

    August 2023 Surgery Buddies!

I had mine 8/1/23 and last food I had was 7/31 so 3 weeks today of clears, I asked about protein shakes and they said I could get the Ensure clear protein drink but no shakes! I can’t drink it because it’s so sweet it gags me so I’ve lived on broth and a lot of water and snowcones w/ sf syrup and popsicles. Three days ago I had cooked/frozen several large batches of Lima, Red beans, cream peas and bean soup. I had some of the bean broth bc it had a bit of substance and it seemed to be all that kept me going. I ran out and went back to broth with seasoning but finally started using 1 small can cream of chicken soup to a quart of chicken broth plus 2 cups water and cooked down with a bunch of Cajun spice. I go back to surgeon tomorrow and am supposed to be put on soft puréed food, eggs, mashed potatoes and yogurts per their instructions and I am certain that if I don’t gnaw my arm off by then I will come home and eat the best eggs and potatoes of my life 🤣 I have been starving for the last 10 days and I’m pretty sure my stomach has healed bc it growls and gives hunger pains about 90-120 post broth meals.
  6. Hi Tynisha! I don’t focus much on carbs, but I try to not go overboard. I eat crackers or a tiny PB&J as a snack most days and may have some oven roasted potatoes with protein for dinner. And I drink whole milk. What has been really important for me is making sure to eat three balanced meals a day, hitting my protein goal (around 110-120 grams daily). I have to have a protein shake or two with milk to get there. If you find you are eating too many carbs, it’s probably because you are snacking too much. If you focus on balanced meals and up your protein goal, you won’t be hungry/want to snack. Veggies and milk aren’t a big impact on carb intake, and help you feel full. Another good way to sneak in more protein is Greek yogurt. I like Oikos mixed berry. Fairly low on carbs/sugars and 15 grams of protein. Basically make sure you are getting enough protein, focus on feeling full from good food, and try to limit snacking. Has worked for me, and I’m still slowly losing weight almost 9 months later. Oh, and work out with weights. Since working out 3 days a week, my body composition has changed quite a bit. Best of luck! Dave

    August 2023 Surgery Buddies!

I appreciate you responding and your suggestions. I don't know about beef jello..I have texture eating issues. Is it just like regular jello? My day goes like this: Breakfast: Coffee w/heavy cream (1 tsp), my multivitamin chew, 1 calcium chew, .5 mg taurine, 2.8 grams magnesium glutamate, 2 tsp collagen protein w/hyaluronic acid all in my coffee, 1 pro/prebiotic 3 strips turkey bacon at 30 calories each and one egg or 2 egg white egg bites with 1/2 teaspoon red pepper Lunch: 1/2 cup turkey chili w/mushrooms and teaspoon G. Hughs chili Thai dipping sauce (no sugar 5 calories 2 carbs) with 1 tablespoon Fage Greek yogurt or Atkins protein bar. Dinner: Fairlife Core Elite protein drink (42 grams) or above chili 1/2 cup or 3oz chicken breast w/broccoli florets - 2 IF I have a snack: its .5 cup fair life chocolate elite core creami protein ice cream 10+- protein grams. This is all I eat for a max of 800 calories. I lost 21lbs before surgery (started diet before surgery May 29th) and lost 50lbs since surgery on August 21 to today. I just don't understand why I've only lost 21 lbs in three months and only 3.8lbs this last month.
  8. Hello, All! I hope you are each having a beautiful Sunday where ever you are in the world. I am being sleeved on Thursday, April 27 (Four days from now! Wow!) and my doctor's instructions say on the last three days of my pre-op diet I can have clear liquids and yogurt only. Have any of you been allowed yogurt on your diet? Professionally I am a nurse and I understand that yogurt is good before surgery because of the probiotics which help ward off c-diff. However, with this being a surgery on my stomach I was a little thrown back by the addition of yogurt being on the list. I was hoping some of you have had this experience or may be able to offer some insight that I missed. Thanks!
  9. Have you tried Atkins bars? I like them but I understand and agree with the density. They have one that's a blueberry yogurt bar it's not dense and is really like a granola bar, very easy to eat. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    high protein snacks?

I like the pure protein bars, The EAS Advantage Carb Control protein drinks only have 100 calories and 17 grams of protein and taste great. Light and lively Greek yogurt is really good too and turkey or beef jerky. I find all of these to be a good snack for protein.

    NUT said no Greek yogurt?!?

My NUT told me to eat Greek Yogurt and to substitute it for other things like mayonnaise. She also wants me to drink low fat milk instead of almond or soy milk. Unless your NUT is going to come to your house to be kitchen monitor, I would just go with what dairy I can keep down, and then just tell her what she wants to hear. In the meantime, I would seek a 2nd opinion from a different NUT.

    NUT said no Greek yogurt?!?

Um..hello NUT? Has she ever made yogurt from scratch? It's MILK along with 1 tsp of yogurt cultures! What the heck? Actually there is a lot of research for the use of yogurt and other fermented foods in helping to repopulate the gut with friendly bacteria. When our stomachs got cut away, we lost a lot of the friendly flora in our gut. Considering 85%+ of our immune system is supposed to be in our gut, yogurt is the best thing we could do. Since ancient times, people have eaten fermented foods to aid in digestion, hence pickles, kimchee, etc. ( I sound like the History Channel I know, I just heard Morgan Freeman's voice reading you that line). Anyhow, back to the topic, i feel confident in saying that I personally would question that piece of advice and ask that it be accompanied by logic. Now if you're eating it with a lot of sugar or artificial sweetner I could understand that but as plain low fat? I don't get it.

Fast Food Ideas.. Meals on the go...

I like beef jerkey for 'on the run'. I keep a jar of 25 strips near the fridge so I can grab one when I need it. I am on the go a lot, but normally I'm on the go to get somewhere I can sit down and eat, so I make lunches the day before, or grab yogurt for b'fast that I eat when I get to work. Always keep a snack drawer at work.. full of kudos bars, curves bars, and granola bites at the moment. I normally have some fruit leathers (45c of yummy good), and beef sticks in there too.

    Need help with food ideas

I'm shifting into mommy mode. Pack like you would a school lunch. Freeze 2 Water bottles and pack in a small container or lunchbox. The frozen water will keep the other foods cold for a few hours. Yogurts, tuna, applesauce and fruit cups are easy to go down and should keep well. These two water bottles you can then drink. I hope this helps.
  15. all victories, ladies! way to go! (Leslie, I especially liked yours...what fun!) I tried to post this earlier, so if it doubles up on me, please forgive, but - I had a NSV today, too. I was forced to eat fast food for lunch - which I never do - and I was good and ordered the grilled chicken sandwich and a fruit parfait at McD's, only to have them give me FRIES in my bag in addition to my order! McDonald's fries are crack to me - I normally cannot resist them. Well, I didn't totally resist them today. I ate two, then drove around the block of my office twice trying to find a familiar face to give them to. There are usually tons of guys around, but none today! So, I had to drive around the block again to find the trash can, but I THREW THEM OUT! Then I went to my office and took the bread off the sandwich and ate the chicken and yogurt for lunch! Whoo Hoo, Me! not perfect, but I say it counts.
  16. I'm four weeks out tomorrow and I get to start solids tomorrow. During my "soft/mushy" stage I was able to eat scrambled eggs, refried Beans, fat-free greek yogurt, really soft stewed chicken and turkey chili with kidney beans (chewed well). I pretty much kept to those few things and could tolerate them well...1/4 cup at a time. No bread, rice or Pasta. Not sure how much I'll change that up as I move to "solids" tomorrow.
  17. lol! If I had a nickel before every time I wish I said I could eat more I'd have well, not even a nickel. Now, I'd have at least enough for a cheap pedi. Really though, if you can stomach the Isopure, that does't sit as heavy in the stomach as the milk based shakes. If you can get even half of one per day that's an extra 20 grams of Protein. I was on only liquids for 3 weeks so yogurt and pudding were off limits for me. At 3 weeks I did start making spike pudding and that helped with the calories and protein. You are rocking it my friend, keep it up! Dang on the straw though, thought I was gonna get to yell at you and get all judgey. Now I gotta go find someone else to pick on.

    The Basics Boot Camp

Just wondering if a little bit of sugar free coffee creamer is allowed on the five day boot camp. Also do you do yogurt?
  19. Hang in there the time will pass fast. Remember though that with thick liquids or what I call full liquids you can have light yogurt creamy soups, cream of wheat or Malt a Meal. When I went through this stage I did not worry about how much fat or sugar these things had in them. You actually have enough to deal with at this time without worrying about all of the other details. I lost 12 lbs during the 15 days of liquids and soft food. Eat some malt a meal right before bed and you should be fine. Good luck. Remember we are from Texas and we can do anything we put our minds too.
  20. Hey ladies! I am scheduled for surgery on July 1st. I don't know why but i'm getting nervous. I don't think it's about the surgery necessarily, that part will be easy, espcially compared to open heart surgery that I had three years ago. I think i'm more neveous about not being successful, about constantly thinking about food and not physically needing or wanting it. I'v heard that head hunger can be bad, but i'v also heard people say that isn't an issure for them. I'm stocked up on shake mix, I just need to stock up on soups and such. I'll do that this coming week. I've been experimenting with shakes and greek yogurt mixins. Plain greek yogurt with a bit of sf chocolate pudding mix is actually quite tasty and it gets so thick that i'm considering mixing a bit of milk or almond milk in to think it. I wish I could find an alternative to the shakes, it's so expensive. I can't believe that there aren't alternitives to it. I'm also getting excited. I'm calling life after surgery Sheri 2.0....haha. Can't wait to get started.

    Protein shake recipes

Thanks, everyone, for the fantastic recipes! I've been experimenting, and here's a game-changer I discovered: the "Berry Bliss Delight." Blend together 1 cup almond milk, a scoop of vanilla protein powder (I prefer GNC brand), a handful of mixed berries (frozen or fresh), and a dollop of Greek yogurt. It's a burst of flavor, packed with protein, and totally masks the usual supplement taste 🍓🥤💖 see my work info

I noticed that my tastes changed with yogurt. I use to love love love me some yogurt. When I had to eat it on my full liquid stage, I HATED the taste of most of them! I was so upset! I haven't been able to eat much to see what else I don't like, less than a month out, I willl have to see what the future holds! Kelly
