HELP! (No, it's not really THAT dramatic????)

No idea what you have in the house or whether you're willing to hit the store. Yogurt, plain or flavored with more fruit added, maybe SF applesauce. If plain yog & applsc, add sweetener to taste, a shake of cinnamon and a coupla drops of vanilla. Or flavor up any yogurt with complementary seasonings/extracts. Cottage cheese, if you prefer. (For eons I thought of cottage as something to eat only when I was ill, but, after banding, added it to my snack rotation.) SF fudgesicle. I think it's the brand "Popsicle" that makes me happy. They also make ices pops that are packed in boxes that look very similar, so look before you leap. Put a banana in the freezer; eat as much as suits you. Same for seedless grapes. Do you have SF syrups, such as Torani? A pot of coffee sweetened/flavored with the chocolate flavor or whichever you like. If choc or vanilla or similar, put some cinnamon in the basket with the ground coffee. This often satisfies me. I've been told that evap FF milk, if put in freezer and cold enough, will whip up; can't vouch for it myself. A bit o' PB with a spoon or two of the Torani and some banana slices, all mushed up, is one of my fave treats. So much that a small amt satisfies. I've been profligate for so long that I can't recall all of my old tricks. IF anything else comes to mind, I'll be back. You are honor-bound to report back with whatever you end up having.
  2. I haven't been the fastest loser but I would try to find things that make you feel your restriction better. For me steak or chicken over fish. Shrimp is good. I stay away from any carbs that don't make you feel very full. For me, if I feel hungry at the end of the day I eat half an apple and that texture makes me feel full and satisfied. I might be able eat 200 calories easily of fat free yogurt and still feel hungry later. There was a great post about how restriction works (pyloric valve) once but I couldn't find it. Most importantly don't let anyone on this board make you feel like you are failing. Everyone has a different experience. Good luck!

    Pre-Surgury stuff

Hey, its 12:54 april 24th 2006....i should be studying exams but i'm here doing my journal! I will start with what i did before getting into this, since i don't have much to say about the pre-op diet (i started 1 hour ago...its a 10 day diet consisting of yogurt and cottage cheese) So....around march i started thinking out of the blue...I need help, i've tried everything, I don't even know what clicked but all of a sudden i felt the urge to look up everything on the RNY gastric bypass. While i was researching that i found info on the Lap-band...which led me here. I was looking for forums where real people were discussing real issues. I started out just talking about it with my parents, they were ok about it but quickly warmed up to the idea. My mom did research and found someone in Toronto. This was the TCC (toronto cosmetic clinic) So i booked a consult in person for late may. I was searching the forum and found out no one really knew them and their reputation was not established, and their post-op care didn't add up. I opted for the TLBC (Toronto laparascopic band centre). Where i could do a phone consult which i booked for april 5th... Filled out the forms, did the consult, set the date....May 4th 2007. I spent countless hours on LBT researching, viewing threads, looking at before and after pics, reading horror stories about the complications. Now comes the real test...10 days, pre-op diet! I will keep you (if anyone is actually reading) posted!

    BANDED: What's your "diet"??

The only diet I follow is really what was on the sheet that my doctor gave to me. The liquid diet for the 1st 48 hours and then after that for this 1st month I only eat: Breakfast: 1-2 eggs scrambled 1 package of grits omelette (no meat) 1 package of oatmeal (any of the above) Lunch: Soup at Hand 1 can of tuna or one of the flavored packages w/mayo, salt, pepper small salad or any fish Dinner: Any baked fish or salmon steamed veggies Snacks: Jell-o w/fat free whipped topping fat free pudding cottage cheese applesauce popiscles/fudgsicles (sugar free) fat free frozen strawberry yogurt w/whipped cream This is just a example but check with your doctor...He told me for the 1st month to stay away from beef, veal, pork, chicken and to try salads 2 weeks after. No bread, pasta, rice, corn...even though it is a starch I stillhave mashed potatos since they are soft. I also found that Viactiv makes a multi-vitamin now and that is alot better than drinking Centrum! It's like having a chocolate! Plenty of water and hot tea has helped me....and NO sodas! juices are great but you might want to dilute them in the beginning. Hope this helps! Good luck on your band!
  5. seems like every surgeon has their own pre-op requirements. mine (surgery is wednesday) was two-weeks long. four protein shakes a day; six servings of any of the following: SF pudding, plain cream of wheat, 1% cottage cheese, 8 oz nonfat yogurt, plain oatmeal, vegetable juice; and unlimited broth, SF jello, popsicles and beverages. definitely not the best two weeks of my life, but certainly two of the most challenging/rewarding. i feel so strong mentally. good luck with your pre-op and surgery!

What Can I Eat In The Mushy Stage?

With my program it was anything pureed. A few of my favorites: Tuna fish, low fat mayo (just enough for consistency), and a pinch of shreded cheese pureed. Low fat refried Beans, salsa, and a pinch of cheese pureed and heated. chicken and low fat vegetable flavored cream cheese pureed and heated. Scrambled eggs, salsa, and a pinch of cheese pureed and heated. Also, things like peaches, pears, green beans, carrots, etc puree pretty good. Greek Yogurt was a staple at this stage. Good luck!

    Wasted Food?

Do you have the option to use the specialty sections of your grocery rather than the pre-packaged? Here in the states I can go to a fish monger and ask for 2-4oz cut of fish, 6 prawns, 3 scallops; or to the cheese counter where they have all the fancy cheeses, and ask for just 2oz of what you like. That's what I do to keep waste down, plus eating the same thing multiple times in a week. It's not ideal, but I figure it's better than not wasting food and staying unhealthy! Sometimes I'm paying a little more by not buying pre-package or bulk, but then I'm not wasting on the back end. I rotate that one week I will have Greek yogurt, the next week cottage cheese -- but I won't buy both in the same week since my husband eats neither.

    Wasted Food?

Yes, it took me a while to figure it out, too. Now I portion out when I purchase things and if I open things like a can of tuna or a container of yogurt I make a note to myself that I'm going to eat that food item until it's gone, even if that means dinner is tomorrow's lunch, too. You'll get past this fairly quickly. Your ability to eat will increase to a more normal amount over the next few months and you'll find you waste less and less. If I'm not mindful when ordering when we eat out, I can still wind up with quite a bit of wasted food. It takes careful planning. ~Cheri

    Wasted Food?

Oh I don’t mean like I do a household shop and I toss half of it I mean things like say cream cheese I buy a pack of cream cheese for and over half of it has to be tossed out, or I buy good yogurts low cal/fat/sugar but it only comes in like a pint pot so over half of it gets thrown out that kind of thing. Although my mother when she makes dinner and tries to give me some has no idea of what I am saying when I say 2 bits of the chicken instead of 2 cubes of chicken I get a bowl full with veg and I look at her and say you need to get it in your head I can’t eat that much food your wasting it! Because I am lactose intolerant no one else but me will eat that cheese so that’s always getting thrown out, I just find a lot of waste even in the small amounts I am personally throwing out just wondered if anyone had ideas I haven’t thought of to curb this.

    Slow Cooker Recipes

As someone who rarely cooks is it weird that I am ridiculously proud of myself for digging out my slow cooker this week? I have been thinking about investing in a 3 in 1 cooker, but since I rarely use my old-fashioned slow cooker I though I had better give it a whirl. I raised my pantry and used a can of black beans, two cans of Rotel tomatoes, one brick of Greek yogurt cream cheese, a few shakes of Mexican seasoning, and two frozen chicken thighs. I made it on Monday and will probably still be eating it this Friday. I still have chicken thighs. What EASY recipe should I try next?
  11. Hard to say! I have a Protein shake and a Protein Bar each day. Then I typically have a Lean Cuisine or Atkins frozen dinner emphasizing veggies and protein for dinner, 8-9oz. A greek yogurt now and then. I also eat some fruit, and some whole grains/fiber, like: slice of protein enriched bread w/peanut butter, or an over-easy egg, or a little chicken salad bowl of Cheerios or All-Bran or Post Shredded Wheat & Bran with organic fat-free milk Fiber enriched low sugar oatmeal with wild blueberries I am basically just trying to eat healthy and light, probably average 1000 calories or so. That's not very much, so I am losing weight about the same rate I did before surgery.

    Pre-op Diet! successes? struggles?

I have the same date and started my pre-op diet Monday as well. Generally, I have to keep the carbs under 100 grams, no sugar, no fruit. It's 3 - 4 Protein shakes a day, and non-starchy vegetables, broth, cream Soups, plain yogurt, sf popsicles. I can have up to 6 ounces of chicken or fish once each week. The NUT said that salad with regular (not fat-free - too many carbs) dressing. I too had the piercing headache on the second day because of caffeine withdrawal. The NUT said that a little caffeine from tea was okay, but definitely none after surgery. So I bought some crystal light iced tea, and I put a little in my Water. Trying to taper down to no caffeine next week. It's not easy, but I've been mixing one scoop of Protein powder with plain Greek yogurt for dinner. It's pretty filling (and about 40g protein) and helps with the cravings. Good luck! Heidi

    Semi Solid Suggestions

Oh wow mine is totally different but I like yours much better!!! I had 2 weeks of liquid diet...1 before and 1 after and then purée with no meat:( Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App yup...I am loving mine. we did have two weeks of liquid pre-op, but the ability to slowly incorporate food post op has been great. I haven't ventured to chicken yet, but scrambled eggs have sit well. During my one week follow up they mentioned trying chicken thighs highly moistened and shredded/pureed. So that will be my next meat. I am melting inches, but they note it will be 5 to 10 lbs of weight loss per month. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using the BariatricPal App I tried eggs my first morning for soft foods and they didn't sit to well but will try again with a different version. Good for you though! Thanks the above helps me too. Tried Lamb Burgers with Mint Yogurt sauce yesterday and they were tasty and sat well on stomach...whew! How much did you weigh going in? 15. Hi! So I'm excited yet so nervous I'm about to start the purée stage of my program. I received a week by week packet but it is very vague. I know a lot of it is a gamble because everyone is different, but I'm looking for suggestions on things and brands you may have tried during this period. On my list is said yogurt, puréed soup, scrambled eggs, and cottage cheese. Any advice anyone would like to share would be greatly appreciated!! ????????????

    Pre-op Diet! successes? struggles?

Mine is under 800 calories a day. Two shakes, then 2-3 cups of raw veggies with 4oz lean protein. I'm not a huge eater and have been hungry! I've added a bit of cheese, yogurt, salsa, guacamole, bacon bits, hummus to the huge salads while still doing the gym. Surgery is Monday! I think the diet is 90% to get you used to it.

(VSG) To those who were successful..

I'm 2+ years out. I've lost 95% of my excess weight. I have not had plastics - which would account for that last 5%. I eat a high protein, low carb diet and exercise 7 days a week. I eat roughly 1500 calories a day. I exercise at least 1 hour each day. A typical day is: Morning - coffee - black, greek yogurt (Skyr Icelandic provisions), 2 tablespoons of granola Mid morning - protein shake (1 cup fairlife skim milk, 1 scoop protein, handful frozen fruit in blender) Lunch - 3-5 ounces of chicken/turkey/beef, 2 cups of green salad mix, 1 tablespoon balsamic dressing mid afternoon - 2-3 ounces cheddar or other hard cheese Dinner - 3-5 ounces meat, salad or green veg and 1/4 c of a starch. I have had to increase my carbs to about 110 g daily due to my exercise load. I fence (en garde) 6-8 hours a week, do Cross Fit 3 hours a week and pilates and strength training another 1-3 hours a week. I eat about 110 g protein daily. I eat protein first. I drink close to a gallon of water a day. If I want a glass of wine or a cocktail, I have one. At my high point, I was over 300. I now sit around 152 with 29% bodyfat. I can deadlift 250 pounds and squat 235. I'm nationally ranked as a fencer in my age group. How well you do it up to you and your commitment to it. I've gone from a size 24 to a size 6.
  18. Good for you! I actually preferred the liquid stage. Shakes for breakfast, broth for lunch then maybe a yogurt (thinned out with soy milk) for dinner. Just easier! @Mikeyy

    Best way to get protein

At almost 2 years out I can almost eat anything. Some meals are always the same. Breakfast is always Greek yogurt and berries. My lunch is usually a bit like pick and mix - a bit of a few things, Which could be a selection of these, Smoked salmon, deli meats, burrata, cashew nuts, walnuts, blue stinky cheese, any fruit, tuna, boiled egg or any left over from a previous meal. The evening meal is usually food cooked from scratch for the family with carbs that I can not fit in my stomach yet, casseroles, roasts, pies, stews. I eat what I can. Later in the day I either eat my meals, left overs or have a protein bar or a protein yogurt. My protein is about 80 grams a day now and my calories are between 1200 and 1500

    First Day Home

@@anitavee - keep phrase is to "sip" walk, walk, walk sip, sip, sip chew, chew, chew get in Protein if you can, spoonful at a time of greek yogurt. don't try to eat too much - less is best right now, because one extra bite can be uncomfortable. keep posting and welcome to the 'other side' !
  21. Thank you! I bought some Greek yogurt today. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Soups

Counts as a liquid to me. Otherwise I wouldn't be getting them in. I asked that question before discharge so not a silly question. ???? I'm still in first week post op. Not allowed yogurt until next week. Good luck!

    How much can you eat???

    I'm hungry... Help!

Everyone is different. I was not hungry when I woke up. I've never heard about not craving. Cravings are equal parts mental and physical so it is possible to not be hungry AND have cravings. As your doctor to prescribe something for the acid. I was started on omeprazole in the hospital which helped a lot. My Protein Shakes fill me up. Perhaps try adding some greek yogurt to help fill you. I use FAGE 0%. It's a great protein boost as well. Holiday food? Meh. However if you must, perhaps figuring out healthier versions of holiday food would help. It's not a magic wand, it's a tool. You have to do the work of learning new and healthier eating habits.
  25. Definitely increasing your protein and fluids will help with energy. You can also probably up you calorie intake a bit. I found that in order to really sustain my workouts, I needed to be right at or a bit above 1000 a day. I also started adding a little Kashi cereal (1/4 of a serving) to my greek yogurt in the afternoons, because I found that having a little bit of carbs pre-workout really helped me get through. Then I would have a high protein dinner shortly after my workouts. I always work out in between when I get home from work and dinner. I find that's the best time for me to work out, because instead of changing out of my work clothes and into my house clothes (pajamas basically) I would change straight into my workout clothes. Once my pajamas are on, I know working out is NOT gonna happen, so by changing into my workout clothes right after work, it forces me to go ahead and do my workout!
