    Needing help

So today makes it my 6 day post op. And I’m just struggling taking the multivitamin. It’s such a struggle for me. I’m having a hard time taking it. Also I’m just all over the place with how much I’m not eating. I’m doing my best to sip sip sip but I’m full full full. I have no appetite for nothing. No craving for anything. I have to force myself to have a protein shakes. I don’t want to be dehydrated. That’s such a fear to go back to the hospital. So I’m pushing myself but truly feel like I’m doing this all wrong. I’m failing at putting it all together. Any advice or anyone feeling the same????

    Buyer remorse and emotional

Oh yes. I felt that way many times in the beginning. The first several weeks are the hardest because you're still recovering from surgery, you have a lot of restrictions on what you can eat, you have to drink nasty protein shakes, and you haven't lost enough weight to feel the benefits of the surgery. Once you get to the regular foods stage and get the benefits of weight loss, things will get a lot easier. I'm almost two years out now, and that miserable newly post-op stage feels like a lifetime ago -- just a tiny blip on my journey to losing 200 pounds. Hang in there!

    Calories per day

I'm 4 months and some post op from gastric bypass. I average about 950 calories a day although some days I can barely reach 700 and others I can have 1200. It just depends on my restriction. I always aim for 60-80 grams of protein but im happy if I can get 60 in a day. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Weird feeling..

This is gonna sound odd but try making it into a drinking game. Watch a old sitcom and anytime the audience does that fake laugh take a shot- be it water, protein shake, watered down juice, Gatorade… you get the idea. You can change up the tv show or movie and make the cue more relevant.

    Best Multivitamin for Gastric Sleeve

With a sleeve, you really don't need anything overly special, as we don't have the malabsorption of certain nutrients that you get with the malabsorbing procedures like the RNY or DS; we mostly have to make up for the poor diet that we have during weight loss when we are concentrating on protein at the expense of the fruits, veggies, grains and legumes that typically flesh out our nutritional profile, so a good quality general multi if usually fine. To that we add some calcium and iron as needed (since they need to be take apart from each other) and whatever else we individually may need. With a sleeve, we generally don't need extra B12 (that's more of an RNY thing) but some programs specify it out of convenience, as many just use the same recommendations for their sleeve patients as tehy use for their RNY patients, and then make adjustments later on as labs indicate. Personally, I just use a generic Centrum from Costco, add one or two doses of Calcium citrate depending upon my other intake (I shoot for 1500-2000mg per day from diet and supplement) plus vit D3, K2 and magnesium citrate (al part of the osteo complex) as I have some history with osteopenia. Overall, the bariatric vits (or double multi vit as some programs recommend instead) are largely overkill for us, but it's generally better to start high and then whittle things down as labs indicate and diet stabilizes.

    June 21st Peeps

Hi everyone, it's almost time! I'm excited, but exhausted. I think the liquid diet has got to be causing me some fatigue, despite consuming plenty of protein. Although I have not slept 1 good night since beginning the liquid diet, so maybe that is contributing to the tiredness. Everyone holding steady and still on course for the 21st?

    Best Multivitamin for Gastric Sleeve

As I too am pre-op, I'm not totally certain... My nutritionist told me to take the multivitamin (which should have the Vitamin D, Iron, and B12 in it) and the calcium citrate. However, she told me that if I drank a protein shake or drank milk, that I didn't necessarily need 2-3 of the citrate chews, and just to do one. That being said, I'm sure your doctor/nutritionist would be happy to guide you in a more medically focused direction.

    Full too soon after eating

I have to supplement with 1 protein shake a day too. Even if I eat pure meat I still can't eat enough to hit my protein goals unless I eat like 5-6 times a day and I don't have time for that. I drink a shake for breakfast every morning and then eat 2-3 times a day beyond that.

    Full too soon after eating

It’s funny you say crumble. I did have some ground Turkey, rice and peppers and I was able to eat at least 3oz of it. I do like my restriction but it looks like I’ll have to do more of that until my stomach settles into normal. But I’ll have to supplement with protein smoothies. But I like those Anyway. Thank you

    Cake, ice cream, pizza…farewell forever?

This is true. I'm 4 months post of from bypass. I dumped once after eating honey butter and some french fries...Sugar and fat put me in double jeopardy lol I avoid sugar like the plague because I don't want to dump. I can still eat pizza though in moderation. I don't eat it often but my dietician says as long as I'm getting in my protein, and staying in a calorie deficit, eat pizza! May 2022 surgery?

I had this problem at one time. The first key is fluids. I found water with flavor was the best. Get hydrated first. You might need something with electrolytes in it. A good one is pedi light they have it for adults as well. It's close to 2.50 a bottle. You are only going to use it when you are really low on fluids it has glucose in it ( its normallyin any drug store, walmart ect close to the over counter nausea medication). Another one I really like is "liquid IV". It's normally in the section with the flavors powders are in walmart or Amazon. I found I need the fluid on my stomach the first thing in the morning before I can tolerate protein. I drink about 4 oz but it will depend on you. I do not do protein shakes that are ready made. I found they make nausea. I use unflavored protein powder I put in water or hot tea or anything to get my protein. If my tea is not sweet enough then I add stevia . After I got enough fluids and my nausea got better then I could drink protein powder that had flavor. I had to add more water than it called for. I like hot coco with protein in 12 ozs of water instead of 8. Yes you need to wait 30mins after drinking to eat and 30 mins after eating . But you need to be well hydrated. Look at your urine and how often you urinate. I drink the 4 oz then I have the 12 oz with protein and water first thing in the morning. After the protein drinkni make I drink another 4 ozs. This gets me on my way for the day very hydrated since I did not drink anything for at least 8 hrs while I slept. Then I would eat cream of wheat, yogurt or water down oatmeal. Then sipping afterwards. Lunch I would eat a turkey sausage links or cottage cheese or two meat balls with sauce. Or baked fish chopped up. Now I have been adding soft veggies or beans for a snack. Sip between meals, wait at least 30 mins after eating. Eat only 2 or 3 oz of food at a time. Take small bits I used "diet tools" from amazon. Their spoon is the right size for a bit. Take 30 mins to eat. Bit wait a few minutes then bit again. It will get better. Listen to your body , we all are different. The fluid in the morning was the game changer for me. Plus using the Baritastic app to track everything and get my calories between 600 to 800 daily.
  13. My plan allows ANYTHING in moderation. Always, getting protein in first. I am a few days shy of 3 months post op. I have had pizza, ordered but just a bite of crust and then ate the topping. I have also bought store crust and made homemade pizza, but still could only eat half of my serving when eating the crust. I also had a couple bites of cake at my God daughters birthday party. My bariatric nutritionist is all about a well balanced diet and treats in moderation. We have to realistic, no one is going to go their entire life without having a treat once in a while. He also has reviewed my diet at both of my follow ups and says I am right on. I have lost 63 LBS since surgery so those 2 bites of cake didn't hurt anything! But I eat all healthy low fat meals 99.5% of the time.

    Weird feeling..

Hello, Your body is adjusting and probably freaking out. Might be dehydrated if you aren't getting in fluids. I had 1 oz cups and I drank one every few minutes and kept a tally. I made sure each day I beat yesterday by at least 1 oz. it really helped push me until I started hitting my goal. Once I was able to drink bigger sips, I graduated to drinking from a cup so I could use ice. I prefer my water ice cold. Still keeping track (I track everything, everyday) Try some Gatorade with protein, or any of the clear protein drinks. They count as fluids and proteins and the protein promotes healing as well as nutrition. I was very lucky, I had a super easy recovery and had no desire to eat so I never went thru the "missing food" stage. I did get a little creative and drained different soups so I could have different flavors. Plain broth was too bland for me. Other people ate the rest of the soup so I wasn't wasting a bunch of food too. I hope you feel better soon, if not call your surgeon.

    Weird feeling..

It is tough in the first few weeks , we all go through it. Its major surgery and we under estimate that. Lots of us have had buyers remorse in the first month but it does get better, Once you begin to getting your water and protein quota in your body things start to get on the right track and you feel better. Take things as easy as you can, be kind to yourself, have naps if you need them. If you are still having spaced out days or dont feel right ask to see your team P.S. if you are dehydrated { is your urine really dark coloured ?} you might need to go to the ER to get it put right I hope you feel better soon

    Full too soon after eating

Some foods can make your restriction kick in more quickly. Chicken can be a culprit as it can be dry. Does it happen with all meat proteins? If it’s just chicken or other specific proteins drop them for a couple of weeks & then see how you go. Sometimes my restriction kicks in quickly. It can occur because I’m distracted & eating a little too quickly or eating something that is too dry or heavy in my tummy. In my first year it sometimes happened if I was worried about eating when I was out or eating with people who didn’t know about the surgery. So I think being a bit stressed & holding tension set off the restriction. You may be consciously or subconsciously worried about whether you will be able to eat a meal & that sets off your restriction. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Certainly worth a chat with your medical team. I don’t think you have a stricture because you are getting some solid food down & you have no nausea & aren’t vomiting. But again talk to your team.
  17. I’d compare the nutritional information & also check with your medical team just to be sure. Usually those soups are designed to be high protein low calorie like the shakes.
  18. Hi WLS family! Tried searching for this but too broad options came up. Lately when I eat meat like skinless chicken I don’t even get a few bites in and I’m having a fullness indicator. This after I’ve also chewed it to bits as well and also well before I’ve drank anything. I stop drinking 30 minutes before I eat just experiment. I don’t FEEL gassy or anything. It’s been this way for the past couple weeks. I always had a normal appetite, my stomach gets pretty upset when I don’t eat but it’s like a total letdown when I prepare, 2oz of chicken, with sweet potatoes and or salmon & vegetables and I’m full after a couple bites 😞 It’s like my stomach is getting more restricted as the days go on. Is that weird? I don’t have any heartburn or burning. I’ve heard of hernias developing but that seems too soon. trust me my appetite for sweets, bad stuff is also still very much alive lol but of course I want healthy options instead. I know it’s a dream to have the restriction and you might think I’m crazy but I do need to ensure I can get all my protein & nutrients in is all. anywho I’m 3 months out from my sleeve. Female, 44 years old, began journey at 330lbs June 2021, had VSG March 2022. Now at 250lbs. thanks in advance and I hope everyone is staying safe.

What about using unflavored protein powder in sugar free jello? One of those would get you 21g of protein.

Go surgery twin! I am day 3 post-op and feel normal. No Tylenol needed. I am struggling with the protein water. My surgeon has us do a 1 week clear liquid post op. And I’ve been more focused about hydration over the protein. Does anyone have any recommendations? I tried isopure. I can tolerate the Gatorade but it only has 10 grams and he wants me to have 30 a day. I guess I could drink 3 of those in a day.

Had surgery on Monday and was discharged by noon on Tues. Tbh no cramping, no nausea, not horrid pain, and had a bm without taking anything for it. The only weird thing is my taste buds have changed. Sweet protein shakes make gag now or maybe it's the flavors I buy idk. I got some unjury protein powders in savory flavors like chicken soup and santa fe chili. I also got the unflavored to add strained soup. I have no cravings or hunger. If I sip too fast I burp or hiccup it up...not a fun feeling.

    Slow weightloss

Same here. My revision was Dec. 3. I have only lost a total of 41 lbs. I eat right, etc. I had a appointment with my nutritionalist. She said I was fine. Try and eat a bit more but I drink and eat at least 50-70g protein a day. Go figure.

I am also not losing weight as fast as others but it is what it is. I just make sure I meet my protein and water goals and figured it will happen in its own time.

What is your protein intake? That is more important then your calorie intake right now.
  25. Autumnrayne I hear you on the feeling of nausea and bloated from whey based protein. I live on gas-x right now so i'd be curious if you've found anything that works for you.
