Awesome for you! I also had the band put in april of 2013 and went from 313 to 198. However, i started to have complications and it slipped and it came out this past may. This November i had the sleeve done... and like you i would recommend the sleeve over the band to anyone... because like you said it can be reversed.. but i have come to know so many with long term issues due to complications. Best of luck to you in your journey,

Looking for a great doctor in Tijuana. I'm torn between three
Clementine Sky replied to eccampbe's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Of the three the only one I'm familiar with is Dr. Kelly. He was the surgeon for a YouTuber whose videos were inspiring to me because she was around the same age and size I was when I had surgery. She goes by LauraVSGtube if you're curious, and has a video about her experience in Mexico with Dr. Kelly. I did read a post on here from someone who was extremely dissatisfied with him, but all other posts I've read were from contented patients. I had my surgery with Dr. Garcia in Tijuana, and definitely recommend him. I felt taken care of the entire time, and have had no complications. I actually enjoyed the stay in the city, too. We were at the Marriott, which was a bit outdated but very pleasant, and in a pretty area of town. -
Nausea and no eating or drinking...
lique replied to LykaCory's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
My surgery was 10/6 and I had severe nausea until recently. I was told it could last 3-6 months. I was dehydrated and admitted to the hospital 3 times since surgery to replenish fluids. My potassium was low each time, which could cause serious complications. Sodium was too high, white count was low, UTI, and other issues, which all can lead to nausea. Tests were run staples were loose and they removed them. It helped some but on top of what all was going on the relief didn't last long. I was on four nausea meds. The one that helped most in the end was Marinol. I'm still having problems getting Water and Protein in. I hope things have gotten better for you. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Researching doctors in Mexico
GreenEyedGal replied to sheronep's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I did go with OCC. There were a couple of major factors in my decision. First was Dr. Ortiz' reputation. He is internationally respected, so that boded well. I also preferred to have my surgery in a surgical center versus a hospital. Some people prefer hospitals because they have emergency services on site, but I prefer surgical centers because of the lower risk of infection. If you do go with a hospital in TJ, make sure it is a real hospital with a real ICU. Many "hospitals" there are little more than surgical centers themselves. Another big factor for me was the follow-up support OCC provides. They have a nutritionist available to answer any and all questions, day or night, as well as several doctors on staff who can answer questions about medications, complications, and address any other medical concerns. Plus they continue to follow-up with me via email almost 2 years post-op now! Finally, I had read many many personal accounts from past patients and that made me feel very confident in my decision. Newbie here, what is OCC? Thank you! Sent from my QTAIR7 using the BariatricPal App -
First consultation (#2) in 30 minutes and I'm going alone
laurak814 replied to laurak814's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks MissJDVSG! I don't put makeup on a lot, but when I do, I go all out with it. So he responded via email, saying he is confused & hurt. Wondering when I made the appointment, he understands why I told him via email though b/c he doesn't respond well to some information, and he doesn't understand why I would consider doing something permanent to my stomach instead of trying exercise again first. He's worried about complications & the cost (money is tight for us). He still thinks of me as young & capable of losing the weight by exercising. I've had 4 knee surgeries, 1 foot surgery & I'm well on my way to knee replacements, which I'm hoping WLS will help to prevent. He is delusional sometimes, I swear. I go next week to my PCP to get him to sign off on WLS & I have to see my Orthopedic surgeon about my knees. I also have to make appointment with my counselor to get her to sign off on my Psych papers for WLS. Talking with my Patient Advocate, I could have surgery as soon as the end of March or early April. But I'm not sure if that is a good time for us as a family. It the start of Track season, my husband is our High School coach & my son is on the 8th grade team. Plus my nephew is on the Baldwin Wallace Track Team & I'm going to be going to some of his meets. I need to be able to move around for that & I'm a Sub Teacher. But I don't want to postpone it too long b/c I can't lose too much weight between now & surgery. Can't drop below 35 BMI. I'm currently 39.4. Sorry this was so long. Management of Reflux After Sleeve using Stretta
Alex Brecher posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Chronic GERD treatment is challenging for patients who have had a sleeve gastrectomy (SG). In some patients, GERD is resolved after SG, but in others symptoms remain Nissen fundoplication surgery is not an option for SG patients due to altered anatomy Revisional surgery from the less invasive SG to Roux-En-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) has been the standard alternative for this challenging patient Patients who chose the SG, may want to avoid a revision to RYGB to control their GERD GERD medications (PPIs) if taken long-term may have a risk of significant side effects, including: osteoporosis, c.diff infections, kidney disease, heart disease and dementia For some patients, GERD symptoms are not completely controlled by PPIs Leaving chronic GERD uncontrolled can lead to Barretts Esophagus There is a clinical study currently enrolling patients on the management of reflux with stretta in patients who have had a sleeve gastrectomy. Email Rebecca Meli rmeli@montefiore.org to be referred to a study site. Please let her know that you heard about it on BariatricPal! For complete study details go to: https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT02637713. What is Stretta - and why may Stretta be appropriate for GERD after bariatric surgery? Stretta is an FDA cleared device that treats the muscle between the stomach and the esophagus with radiofrequency (RF) energy - it is indicated for the treatment of GERD. Non-surgical treatment delivered through the mouth, that does not alter the anatomy Delivers low levels of RF energy to the muscle between the stomach and esophagus Studies show Stretta results in a thicker muscle, improved barrier and fewer reflux events More than 40 clinical studies show Stretta to be safe, effective and durable Having a Stretta procedure does not complicate future surgeries when necessary A study of Stretta in GERD patients after RYGB showed 71% with resolved symptoms (Mattar et al 2006) -

When you say stuck, do you mean it feels like food is getting stuck in your lower esophageal sphincter? I still feel this way from time to time, but only if I eat too fast or too much. It was really frequent for me during the first 5 weeks post-op (I had the sleeve), but it was because my stomach was still swollen. I've heard of many complications with the LAP-Band. I think my surgeon is trying to get out of the LAP-Band procedure in his practice because there are so many issues going on with it. I highly recommend getting the sleeve. I think you'll like it more. When I do feel like food is getting stuck, I go to the bathroom and make myself puke (I know I shouldn't be doing that. It's a challenge I'm working on.) I know that when it gets stuck, it's because it's my fault for not eating slowly. This stuck feeling doesn't happen that often; maybe once every two weeks (and don't forget that it's only because I eat fast).

Internal bleeding after Gastric Sleeve Surgery
L.T. replied to L.T.'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
He really did say that. I have a journal of everyday and everything that has happened and has been said. I also have all medical records. She had been to the ER 6 different times to 3 different hospitals. She also has fluid on her left lung. We have talked to many bariatric docs since we have been at this major hospital and they cannot believe that he put her on Xarelto!! Most docs use Lovenox or heparin. There is no antidote for Xarelto when internal bleeding starts. It is a miracle that she is alive. Now they don't know if they can do the stent today because of her low oxygen levels. I think she has had every complication possible. The new doc has even tried to contact the AL doctor about her. He doesn't call back. Her new doc is extremely upset with him. Her new doctor is extremely caring and will eventually get her well. ???????????????????? -
Just got sleeved 12/14/16. Discovered sleep apnea!
mylighthouse replied to tonytiger87's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello I found out that I had sleep apnea in 2015. I had colon-resection surgery and complications. Spent 2 months in the hospital, then when I got home, I had a letter waiting for me from the hospital. It explained that during the surgery, they expected that I had sleep apnea, and they suggested that I have a sleep study done. At that time, I weighed around 330 pounds. I didn't know anything about sleep apnea at that point. I went and had my sleep study and found out that I had moderate sleep apnea. Now I sleep with a CPAP every night. I use the full face mask, that covers my nose and mouth. It only took me a couple of nights to get used to it. I have no problems sleeping with it now. I read and also my surgeon told me, that after I lose some weight, it is possible that the sleep apnea will no longer be a problem. My high weight was 334. I am now down to 279. So after I lose a significant amount more, I will go back and do another sleep study, and see if I still need my CPAP. -

Gastric Sleeve surgery - the reality
trekker954 replied to Evie82's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I think more people post who may have issues (vomitting), those of us who do not have any side effects do not post as much. I've never vomited, no complications, pretty easy peasy and I'm 62. I'm just melting away. Like theantichick said, if I eat too fast or try for that one more bite, I may get a tad nauseus; but if you listen to your body, you really will know when to stop eating. We need to have that limit, that is how we lose the weight. I love being restricted. As it was mentioned, this is a tool. You still need to remind yourself that your EYES are bigger than your belly. Even now 17 weeks out, I may put more on my plate thinking its a small amount yet I only eat half. It doesn't affect me at all. If I'm eating out, I just take leftovers home, and I may sit there while the rest of my family/friends finish up. -
Is the sleeve really "just as good"
rny100516 replied to onmyway11's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi all! I had rny because I had an existing issue with GERD. I could burp and acid would come out of my nose. Not pleasant. Sleeve can make GERD worse, or create it in people who never had the issue, so my surgeon advised rny. I walked in wanting the less invasive sleeve. It seems like a less permanent alteration since your intestines aren't re-routed. People seem to not have as many food in tolerances and they don't dump typically. However I will say this...Everyone is different. I have been blessed with no complications so far. I have a sleeved family member who recently had an issue, and a sleeved co-worker who has been in and out of hospital because she can't keep any food down. Some of this may be bad choices. Because they don't dump they could be maybe less cautious with their choices? Only they know for sure. I'm happy with my pouch, but many sleeves are thrilled and extremely successful. Let your situation make the decision. If your surgeon is trying to talk you out of rny, find out his real reason. It'd not about what everyone else is choosing, it's about what will be the best choice for you. Sent from my SM-N910T using the BariatricPal App -
Hello everyone! I'm 1 year post-op next week and just hit my goal. I'm so happy with the results and didn't have any complications but I will tell you at our ages you need your Protein. I love premiere protein and still have at least one a day because i love the chocolate ones! If you don't get all of your protein in, you will start to loose your hair... seriously!!!! i know 2 other ladies that did not get enough protein in and didn't continue their Vitamins after 4 months and they both lost ALOT of hair. Now it's been a year for them as well and it's just starting to come back...like baby hair!!! Our hair gets thin enough as we age so please be careful. Good luck to everyone!!! Merry Christmas to all and to all a goodnight! smile

Lightweights in the house! Any more people with less to lose/less BMI's?
anewmee replied to MumtazG38's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'd love to ask some people with low BMI how the surgery has gone for you. I'm a BMI of 30 and my surgeon will do the sleeve. I'm happy as I'm going to use this as a tool to change my life FOREVER. I have some health complications too, and I hope to sort those out. BUT, I'm terrified of losing too much. Any more than 25 kilos (56 pounds) will make me look ill. I will be asking my surgeon about this but I do wonder if any of you can give me some advice? -
Best place in Mexico?
Karen Guffey replied to whitneyisfab's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Just registered here! Thanks to what I've been reading here, I've decided to begin the steps for a July surgery at the Oasis of Hope in Tijuana. My biggest concern at the moment is post-op. What if there are complications? It could become more expensive to have surgery there than here in the U.S. (Georgia) if I have to return because of complications. Has anyone here ever had them post-surgery? -
Pre or post op, what was or is the hardest for you
lodagoda replied to julie74601's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Post op is harder. Because preop is your choice to make and has no restriction to deviate. So difficulty itself isn't an issue. Post op is when you feel yourself has changed and you need to adapt safely to this not create any complication but also to provide yourself with bare minimum of nutrients and Vitamin to keep functioning well. So it is a lot of hard work afterwards. Ups and downs mainly up is what we hope for. But no one said it will be easy. I'm day 2 post op. Getting discharged today. Nerve Pain in the Thigh - Ideas Please
BigDog Bryan posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am EXTATIC with my WLS Surgery decision, and I have had no real complications to speak of. Recently, however, I have developed a nerve pain (sort of a burning, numbing pain) in the quadriceps and hip area of my left thigh. It is localized, and never goes to or past my knee. Additionally, my right leg is just fine. I had the well-known numbness that many with morbid obesity learn to adapt to, and it disappeared after I lost my first 35-40 pounds. This seems to be a different pain in that it doesn't ever truly go away. Standing does intensify it, but walking is less of a discomfort. Sitting for 2-5 minutes is like a "reset button" that allows me to continue with normal activities. I found reference to Meralgia Paraesthetica online, but this forum has become a vital resource as well. Any similar experiences and/or solutions are greatly appreciated. Thanks, BigDogBryan -
Unfortunately I couldn't take in any protein at all for three months and now am still battling to hit the protein markers. I had two punch biopsies and I appear to have completely dead or missing follicles in some areas but the Dermatologist is hopeful for regrowth in areas where follicles still exist. She prescribed the minoxidil and The Belgravia Hair clinic uses the lasercomb in combination with it. The other supplements may or may not help but my nutritionist said a placebo effect might be positive. I have alot of malnutritional deficiencies so I am prepared for the baldness. The haircut did help though because I now don't have handfuls coming out in my hands due to the length. Several of my real life bariatric friends recommended the cut and they were right. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Im sorry to hear about your difficulties. It does sound like have other causes for hair loss beyond just the surgery. I still believe that for most who just get some hair falling out a few months after surgery, the cause is usually telogen effluvium and that hair will return and that there is no cause for great alarm if they understand what is happening... Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App Clearly, the post op complications, nutritional deficiencies etc certainly contributed to the hair loss, not simply the trauma of surgery. I definitely wasn't going bald prior to surgery though. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I know this is technically pre-op but I have questions about post-op. I have my surgery tomorrow morning and I'm so beyond nervous!!! I'm scared I'll die, have a complication, the pain will be excruciating, etc. I'm kind of just looking for support, kind words, prayers, and to see if anyone can tell me how bad their pain was and what the worst part was? Also, what does the gas pain feel like? It is bearable or is it horrid? Thanks. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

The Ongoing Saga of my Dad & my Surgery
MissJDVSG replied to Anna Nim's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Headdesk is correct! It's clear that your dad loves you and is coming from a place of love. Maybe he knew someone who had the surgery and had some crazy complication? That's usually what I have heard about from people (who then act like experts) about WLS. If your surgery is tomorrow, at least you are toward the end of his pleading. Unless of course, he decides to continue to talk about how you shouldn't have done this after surgery? That might be one thing to address with him, that you know his opinion but now hat you've had the surgery, you need him to be 110% supportive and not bring up his personal opinions about doubts. You're not a lemming. Your an adult making an informed decision with which your dad disagrees. You're allowed to put yourself and your health first. Good luck with your surgery! All will be well! It's almost six months since surgery and I feel great! No complications or major issues. I burp a lot and almost everything gives me mild heart burn but that's it. It's the best feeling in the world is to be able to run up and down stairs without getting shortness or breath or without feeling my thighs burning! I was 257 on July 19th now I am 205! 52lbs gone and only 20lbs away from my target goal! I went from a 2xl to a Large and from a 20 pants to a 14! I no longer need the plus size section!!
