Damn I'm scared , I love to eat But the one thing I keep thinking is by next year when I wear shorts or skirts my thighs wont rub together. and maybe a bikini ? who knows right ? But seriously when I went in for the first meeting we were given a printed copy of what to expect and seems like all were supposed to go on this two week liquid diet with one meal for lunch and no coffee???? I am up at 2 am Im not going without coffee , cut the cream yes cut the caffine no. But seriously a print out for all that doesn't seem correct . I see alot of the low carb people on here I think I will give my nutritionist a call I went for my pre op dr apt and he said I can feel your rib cage i can do your surgery? this is scary for me do they not understand ? or is this get as many patients in before medical insurances decide not to pay ?

Feeling compelled to eat my favorite things (pre-surgery)
LeaninLanc replied to Arthur Dent's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 8 weeks post-op but can tell you that I purposely ate a variety of favorite foods, before surgery, with the thought that once I'd had surgery I'd still "want" these foods but would have to deny myself. What I wish I knew then is that my tastes would change and that, at least in the early months, I would feel no desire for those foods I used to crave. Self-discipline with food has never been my strong point (duh) but the VSG makes it much easier to stay on course. -
Newb here. Starting the process. Appt is June 15th
ShrinkingPeach replied to Damarie's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
The best decision you can make is to do something to improve your health. I am one week and one day post op and the only regret I have is that I didn't do it sooner. It is definitely not the easy way out. Those who say that just think the surgery makes you lose the weight. The reality is that it is a tool along with better eating habits, the fact your food volume is severely reduced and you still must exercise. The pre-op diet wasn't that big of a deal for me. I had to do 2 weeks of it and I lost 20 pounds in those 2 weeks so it gave me motivation to get to the finish line of it. Once I got into the routine of it I didn't even eat the freebies like broth! I changed my eating habits at my consult at end of January this year, had surgery May 15th and with all I did lost 48 pounds so far. You will be amazed how well you an do with the tools you are given. Good for you for starting the process again! Good luck and keep us posted on your progress!! -
Hello there and welcome! I had the surgery April 29, 2007. I did not have to do the pre-op diet other than my own choice to start leaving off a few things(sodas). I did not have the "foaming" or any problems following surgery. I was on fluids for 2 weeks, mushies for 2 and then regular food. I eat no beef or bread. Some people do with no problems. You can experiment with food items to see what you can tolerate. The key is chew, chew, chew and take small bites. I have found that I really do not miss what I can't have. I think I am blinded by the great feeling I have about what I have done for me! Good luck with your adventure!

Bunch of questions
mamachef82 replied to Adrianabelle's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm still preop- but I've met all my insurance's requirements and now just have to get cleared for surgery by the psychologist, pulmonary specialist, nutritionist and physical therapist. Once the surgeon puts in the request for final approval from the insurance company, they say they make the decision in 2 weeks. My insurance only required me to talk with my doctor 3 times and get weighed- that was considered the 6 month medically supervised diet. No weight loss required. I also had to talk to a case worker with the insurance company's bariatric program every month. Once I completed the six months, I was referred on to the surgeon. I was in a situation a similar to yours- I had a baby and gained 40 pounds pretty quickly after he was born. I realized pretty early on in the six month "program" that I had developed so many habits to reinforce my dependency on food. I'm a chef by profession and used every excuse to eat and graze throughout the day, and never really have a meal, but ate nonstop after getting home from work. Now I have breakfast lunch and dinner, and track every single bite with My Fitness Pal. Even when I go 1,500 calories over my goal, I still track it. Who else am I lying to besides myself when I don't track everything? I'm trying to do everything I can to form better habits before the surgery so it's not so hard afterwards when I'm already struggling with my limited food choices. I see it as being nice to future me. Be proud of every good thing you do, and actively make good choices to reinforce that positive self talk. And most importantly, everything takes time. My surgeon requires Full payment of the copay before surgery. -
Oh the infamous 3 week stall that hits anywhere between weeks 2 and 6. ((hugs)) It's awful. Hang in there!!

I just wanted to let everyone know there is hope if you're in a stall. I am only about 6 weeks out so I'm early but I did suffer through an almost 3 week stall. Which means the majority of my weight loss thus far has been from pre-op diet and first 3 weeks after surgery. I was losing 1 lb a day and then I lost NOTHING for 3 straight weeks. It was driving me insane b/c I am not getting to eat my favorite foods, when I do eat it's a few bites and yet no movement on the scale at all. Very frustrating and depressing. I'm walking and I'm following the rules. Then every morning...nothing. In fact I even went up 2 lbs and then down and then up and then down. The same 2 lbs! Well finally this week the scale decided to move again. I'm back to losing 1 lb a day. Crazy, right? I have done NOTHING different. Same thing, same level of exercise. So now I must remember the next time I stall to just chill out. Everyone told me to wait it out but a part of me believed that my body was going to defy all scientific logic!

Liquid diet! How much weight to loose??
btrieger replied to Tori1983's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think I lost 10 pounds during my 22 day pre-op liquid diet. I must have really missed the boat on the 14 pounds a week think. -
How about gurgling...do you gurgle with your sleeve. I got a fill a couple of weeks ago...number 6 by the way and ever single thing I put in my mouth, liquids or solids, I'm gurgling to the point that it is embarassing. It is soooo loud and I have to excuse myself all the time. Don't get me wrong...gurgling wouldn't bother me one bit if I was losing. I've been eating very little and 85% is great food choices and my scale is not moving at all...in 8 months! Anyway, I too am seriously considering the sleeve. I know we still have to chew well, but I'd be excited to actually eat meat with out throwing it all up. People keep saying we have to make good food choices and get our protien in..well, I'm all for that but would like to be able to keep it down.... I am looooovvving this forum...thanks to everyone for all the great info :001_smile:

Hi! I am having my surgery next week! I have MS and wondering if anyone on here...with MS...has had the Sleeve??

@@snickysnack78 You are making very good progress! Think about losing 27lbs in 5 weeks, that is over 5lbs per week! As you get closer to your goal you won't see numbers like that. If I lose 10 per month now that is an exceptional month for me. I just saw my bariatric team yesterday, they don't set a goal. They want to ensure you are happy with your weight loss. Well, they were extremely happy with my progress and as I said, I lose on average about 10lbs per month. I may or may not get to my personal goal before my one year anniversary which is at the end of September. The big thing is that you follow the plan. If you do that and not stray off, the weight will come off. For some it happens a little slower but in the end everyone catches up over the long haul. I would not worry about your follow up, it should go well for you.

just got my date today
btrieger replied to stamich0830's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Congrats! I just got home from surgeon's office and I was supposed to get my date today but my cardiologist did not specifically list in the release for surgery that I could stop taking Plavex for 2 weeks. Now, I have to wait until they contact him and hope he gives the ok. -
Not losing enough
AJ cowgirl replied to snickysnack78's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Glad I found this post! I've been getting a little bluesy to you about the weight loss. At my one-month follow-up my doctor kind of made me feel like crap. I didn't walk for about a week because I was having some horrible female issues. I heard him tell the dietitian through the closed door, that I was being noncompliant and I was falling off the wagon. I had a large amount of weight loss in the beginning I went from 277 to 250 during the liquid phase. My first two weeks I went from 250 to 236 at my one-month appointment I only lost 6 pounds after that. I am now 6 weeks out and I weigh 225. I've been stuck here for about a week I'm walking a mile to 2 miles in the morning, I've been going to the gym each night. And I'm back to weighing every bit of my food. And just drinking plain water. Sometimes I don't think the doctors realize how much they emotionally hurt you when they are critical about the weight-loss post surgery, I can understand that they want you to do well but when they're highly critical of somebody who's been living in liquid it just doesn't seem kind. -
I downloaded this VSG app on my iPad only a week ago. I must say that it has been one of the best tools. I am addicted to it now. Everyone is so helpful and willing to share. I have learned sooo much here. So many answers to questions that I was afraid to or did not think to ask. Thanks VSG community!

if you had to complete a 6 month diet
Wendilou replied to Amanda R's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow, that's a lot more involved than my PCP got. I would say a realistic goal is 1-2 lbs a week. -

Calorie/fat/carb counting post op..
stcyt replied to susimar's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm stalled right now and its killing me!!! Its been 10 days since the scale has moved. I'm trying not to get freaked out about it but my inclination is to want to "go on a diet". The whole reason I had the surgery was because obsessive dieting was ruling my life. I really wanted to let go of all that. I would like to eat protien veggies fruit and complex carbs, in that order. After that I just want to trust the sleeve... let go of my obsessive need to diet. I'm sure others feel differently.... they just want to loose the weight and get it over with. That makes sense too, I guess it depends on factors like your reason for having surgery, what your particular mal adaptive thinking patterns are (if any), your BMI, the amount of cravings you have...... etc. Stacey -
So, what can I do to ensure that I don't stall? I can't imagine stalling when I can only eat 1/8 cup for a meal. I guess I still need to count calories, carbs, and fats? I know I will need to exercise..that's a done deal.

Lisa, I just sent a FB friend request. After orientation, most of you questions will be answered. You have 4 nutrition classes, 2 exercise classes and 3-4 behavior classes. I did not have to have an endoscopy before surgery. They had me do a 2 week Optifast diet. I decided to do 5 weeks to have a bigger weight loss before surgery. It was also 1/6 when I started and I wanted to have a weight loss New Years resolution . I chose sleeve after talking extensively to the surgeon. I do not crave sweets and I do not have reflux. Those were the two big things about sleeve vs bypass.

Need some advice and information
band2sleeve replied to Jaymie72's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi Jaymie, I'm only 2 weeks out from my band to sleeve revision so, I really can't tell you how well the band is helping with my weight loss. I was banded for 2 years. I lost 90# but gained back 20# while being unfilled. My problem was I could never achieve the "sweet spot" I was either too loose and could eat anything and quickly gain or too tight and would puke up everything and have horrible acid reflux. My doctor has been trying to convince me to revise to the sleeve for about a year. I needed that year to do a lot of research to see if it was going to be right for me. After my last complete unfill, I decided it was time. So far, so good! It is like night and day. I can eat without getting stuck, I haven't puked once, No more acid reflux and it doesn't hurt to eat like it did with my band. Right now, only 2 weeks out, I'm happy I've made the switch. I still have 15# to loose and I hope the sleeve will help me with that. However, at this point, I will be thrilled to just maintain my weight loss. In all the research I did, I found that the vast majority of people that went from the band to the sleeve are extremely happy with the switch. My doctor won't even do the band anymore because of all the problems associated with them. My revision was done in one surgery. It was much easier than my band surgery. Less pain and I'm feeling like myself much faster. The 1st week out I was very fatigued but not in pain. As a matter of fact, I haven't used any pain meds since coming home from the hospital. I know that everyone recovers in a different way. I guess I've been lucky. Good luck in you decision. If you have any other questions just ask. People on this board are very helpful and friendly.
