Meal ideas for all stages after surgery?
Erin18 replied to Erin18's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm going to be working on staying away from soda as much as possible. I'm going to try to get the zero sugar gatorades and diet lemon iced tea. This will hopefully make that part easier and if I got used to it now, it'll make it easier for the long run. No way, after I get the surgery, I don't want to risk it lol. I know it'll be hard since I think it's the bubbles I like. For sweets, I wanna try and make healthier sweets like I did last year. (If you want to try it, it's 1/2 c plain non fat greek yogurt, 2 tbsp sugar free fat free pudding mix, 1 tbsp zero calorie sweetener (or 2 tbsp if you want it a little sweeter). Mix and top on strawberries. 2 tbsp reddi whip and 1tsp sprinkles of you want. It's really good and low in calories. I know when there's parties and events where there are foods I love, it's going to be hard. I mean everything is okay in moderation. Right? I'd be worried if I'm at a party somewhere else instead of home, that I'd get sick. So, what I've seen with a youtuber, her and her husband bring their own portioned out foods. What foods can you not tolerate? What's a lolly bar? I guess what you can do is avoid it or have something small to satisfy yourself. Is the flavored Protein powder fruity? -
Best Fast Food Bets after Bariatric Surgery

Avocado ranch sauce, tomatoes, reduced fat sour cream, lettuce, black beans, guacamole. I got the steak option with no cheese or seasoned rice and I didn't do any of their optional add ons. It tasted SOOOOO good!!!!!!!!! Total of 260 calories the way I got it. -
How many calories are you taking in? 2 weeks post ESG
ice75002 replied to Tela OG's topic in Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty Forum
Hi Tela - Tomorrow will be one week for me post ESG. I had very little complications, nausea gone within 48 hours and back working already . Per my doctor, I don’t have any restrictions but I’m pretty tired. He thought it would take 2 or 3 weeks, but more about being tired. The restrictions are much less because there is not cutting. I have zero problems with getting enough water. I do mix in vitamin water zero, and crystal light lemonade. I have no problem with getting protein. The majority through fairlife protein shakes but I’ve started to do some unflavored isopure. Without solid foods, I think it will be hard to get much more calories. But I feel like I could eat solid foods but will follow the guideline Lets keep in touch. Good luck. Oh, i have a consult tomorrow. I’m going to be asking a similar question. -
There seems to be no 'normal' when it comes to pre-op diets. Everybody seems to have a different one. Mine was two weeks of non-fat milk, 20oz, three times per day. Plus water..... Other people get meat and veggies. Most seem to get protein shakes.

GUYS....I cried today....for a good reason
SleeveToBypass2023 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So today is my weekly weigh in day, and I weigh 349!!! It's the first time in 2 years I have been below 350 (1st time was when I did keto, but as soon as I hit 320 it literally came back up and I never lost a single pound after I went back to my original weight). I'm figuring out the food portions, timing, measurements and I think I have it down!!! You guys have all been so amazing with all the meltdowns, crazy questions, doubting myself, etc I've done on here (I know, I was a bit loco lol ). But I seem to be losing at a nice steady pace (5-7 pounds per week) and I have to say, I'm really liking it. I feel like this is much more sustainable and maintainable than when I was doing keto (and surprisingly, a lot less restrictive! ) I'm 7 weeks post op today and honestly, other than my scars on my tummy, I would never know I had surgery. No pain, no more limitations, no problems at all. I still have to be mindful of how much I eat and how often, because as I have said before, I never lost any of my hunger hormone. But I make homemade smoothies with fruit or I drink a protein shake if I need a little extra protein, or I just keep busy until I can teach my stomach and body that I'm NOT hungry and I HAVE eaten enough and I will NOT be eating anymore because I had my allotted amount and that's it. It's harder when you're still hungry, but it CAN be done. Especially when I see the progress on the scale. So so glad I had this surgery. I don't regret it at all. Not even a tiny bit. I just wish I had done it sooner. But I guess we all do, don't we? lol -
Hi, first time posting here, but I am also at a BMI of 29.8. My BMI fluctuates up to 30 and then down to 29. I am always on the boarder of obese and have been my entire life. I am tired of it. I have a surgery scheduled in July. I am scared and have continual second thought myself but I have decided that this is the best option for myself. I am tired of constantly struggling with my weight. I feel that this tool will significantly help me in the long run.

4 months out and stalled all month!
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to DonnaGS's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Carbs are, at least for me, the VERY worst thing I can eat if I want to lose weight. But it's not really possible to eat a balanced diet and cut out ALL carbs. My dietician said to consume 60-80g of protein per day, less than 50g of carbs per day, and less than 50g of fats per day. She said food should be half a cup or less per meal, and for those meals that I can't measure in a measuring cup, I bought a food scale and make sure not to go over 4oz per meal (I typically stay around the 3oz mark, just o be safe). When I had my stall, it happened at 2 1/2 weeks and lasted a full 2 weeks. I actually gained 5 pounds during it and then just got stuck. Now I'm 7 weeks post op today and I'm losing between 5-7 pounds per week (before my stall I literally lost 30 pounds in 2 1/2 weeks, it was crazy!!!) so while the weight loss has slowed a lot from pre stall, I like the pace I'm at. It's easier to manage and even with the dietary restrictions, I still get to order yummy stuff and not feel left out (and I end up with at least 1 or 2 more meals with my leftovers LOL. My husband calls me a cheap date). -
June 2022 surgery buddies

Mine was June 8…gastric bypass. I did modified liquid (read occasional cheating) starting 3 weeks before. More modified liquid (almost no cheating) 2 weeks before. 100% compliant liquid -not even the thought of cheating- one week before. Two days before surgery, it was difficult, but I attribute of that to nerves. i am 2 weeks post op tomorrow. liquids since June 10 when I got home. I’m not hungry, and I feel better than I have in 25 years. I am meeting my liquid and Protein goals. good luck to you! -
With my nutritionist's approval - I've started my breakfast and lunch with Keto Chow protein powder. So I'm slowly getting used to more liquid and less food. It's beginning to affect the food portions when I eat dinner, so I think that is a great plus!. I'm adding Orgain college peptides wot my water to make sure I'm getting enough protein prior to surgery as well. I'm down 14 pounds towards my 20lb goal before the surgery. So far so good

When I was going through all the pre op stuff I was told I could never have caffeine again EVER. Now that I am 7 weeks post op I was told no more than 8oz per day and thats only at 6 months Post Op. They've also uped the protein from 60g what it was initially to 80g or more per day so Im guessing per provider things seem to fluctuate. As catwoman7 says:

4 months out and stalled all month!
DonnaGS replied to DonnaGS's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thank you for the support! I appreciate the ideas and support. I think what I'm really whining about is that have to get rid of carbs, when I'm doing everything else right! I do walk as much as my body allows, I have physical issues which keep me from doing 3 miles a day like I'd like to. Still I'm eating very little compared to the average person. I walk everyday, plus weights, yoga, etc. I eat a small amount of carbs and throws me into non keto and I stall. I guess my body doesn't care about all this, it is what it is! So I've gotten back into just healthy eating, lots of protein! -
Pre-surgery in the era of telemedicine
Mariann812 replied to vikingbeast's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My experience has been completely different from the ones I read above. I’m in Wake County NC, and if coming here for surgery is an option, I would suggest exploring that option. I began the process in January with research and my surgery was June 8, 2022. My initial ZOOM consult with the Patient Administrator and the surgeon lasted 2 hours: 30 minutes with PA and 90 minutes with the surgeon. I went through EXTENSIVE pre-procedure testing: physically and psychologically. A massive hiatal hernia was diagnosed, and I was screened by a cardiologist (also extensive) before everything was sent to my insurance company. I also had a sleep study and a CPAP machine was prescribed. I went to a nutrition introduction and the nutritionist has been there since February to answer every question. I had a nutrition meeting 1 week prior to surgery, and the nutritionist conducted another class while I was in the hospital and came to see me 2 mornings in the hospital and I have another class in a week. The hospital and practice I used are CIGNA Bariatric Centers For Excellence. They practice ERAS- Enhanced Recovery After Surgery. I was never given narcotics…only a nerve block and two mild pain meds prior to surgery. I did not need any pain medication either post op or when I came home. The care I received was absolutely top notch from beginning to end. The hospital staff was superb. If this is an option for anyone, I recommend it without hesitation. I am 67 years old and I intend to lose 100 lbs. i underwent a hernia repair for a massive hiatal hernia, my gallbladder was removed and I had gastric bypass. Hope this helps someone. -
Does Anyone Take Collagen Peptide Powder along with Your Protein?
ShianRaineDrop replied to UtahGirlie's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I had read that collagen was an incomplete protein also but I do have a question. If it is taken in addition to our daily protein goals, could it offer some help in the future? I'll have to add that to my list of things to do some more research on, which is getting longer by the day. 😋 -

Dinner party on soft foods
Arabesque replied to Melissa4444's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Oh, yes the fish is the way to go and maybe the eggplant depending on how it’s prepped & served with. Just watch the sides. You won’t be able to eat all you’re served but that’s ok. Ask to take your left overs home as others have suggested if you want & yes a cooler can be invaluable. And yes try some fish at home before you go just to be sure. (I ate a lot of fish from soft food.) Don’t be afraid to give the restaurant a call before you go either to let them know you are on a restricted diet post abdominal surgery. They may be able to offer you an option just like they would for a vegetarian or vegan or for someone with food allergies. Most restaurants are very flexible & understanding these days. Enjoy the party. -

This is my first post. I am scheduled for July 22nd. Still waiting for insurance approval. Researching all of my vitamin options now. I have two week pre-op of 4 protein shakes plus any other liquid/broth and one protein bar. I am excited and nervous at the same time. -
Food Before and After Photos
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to GreenTealael's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Day 8ish- apparently what I mean by variety was a different fruit and veggie option and maybe a protein shake or bar. 😂 I counted both the shake and bar in my total calories for the day but may or may not eat them. One thermos has soup the other frozen strawberries and yogurt. The baggies are granola and roasted garbanzo beans. Took the leftover pizza with green beans and a salad with light Italian dressing. -

Stalls happen. Frustrating & demoralising at times but part of the process. But you also know you have been going off plan which is hindering your weight loss too. You know what you have to do to get back on track. Remember the benefits of the surgery don’t last forever. Take advantage of them now. Take your lovely puppy for walks. Ditch the carbs. Stick to your plan. Ensure you’re meeting your fluid & protein goals. Check if you’re really hungry or just head hungry. Are you hungry for a specific food or food type? Does it pass if you distract yourself or have something to drink? Real hunger feels different to head hunger. For me I get restless & feel like something is wrong. It doesn’t pass & I don’t crave anything specific. You can do this. -
Blah...my first stall...
Crisscat replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank God I broke the stall after 5 weeks. It wasnt a big break through (4.6 lbs) but at this point I will take anything. I am soooo hoping my body has broke through and doent stall out again! It drove me bonkers and I felt like such a failure. Ive had a little talk with my inner self and hopefully I just keep on going and doing what I am doing. With any luck I will continue to lose. I think getting my fluids daily is a problem for me. when I drink to get my fluids in then I have a problem eating (too full) and vice versa. I think I need to find a happy median so I can be good on both protein and water. -

Hummmmm…I guess You could bring something with you to eat before or after. I mean if you feel comfortable eating a little fish there that’s obviously the easier option but if you don’t want to eat there then you will have to pack a snack I guess. -
How do you stay focused? I'm struggling a bit the past three days. All I want is sweets and carbs. I have no clue what changed but for some reason I'm craving hard. I'm literally dreaming about food and when I wake up, I'm thinking about my next meal. I'm not "hungry" but so munchy. I'm trying to stay focused, busy, exercise and the likes but this looking struggle is getting to be so hard. I meet with my nutritionist tomorrow and I'm so hopeful she has some advice. My protein intake is great, liquids on point, even throwing in some raw veggies and berries to curb the sweet/carb craving. Thoughts?

Rny patients....& Taste change
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to KatyC2922's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
At almost 2 years post revision I still can’t walk down the baking aisle or the candy aisle at the grocery store because the smell of sugar really bothers me so anything I need for baking I have to order for pickup. After my sleeve I couldn’t drink anything besides protein shakes and grape powderade zero and I hated anything artificial grape before surgery. After my revision from GERD thankfully that went away and I could enjoy actual water again! Everything else though was just temporary but I do find I enjoy baby kale now. -
Day 4 of Liquid: Weak and Worried
ShianRaineDrop replied to doobie31's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm surprised to hear that some surgeons recommend mostly liquid for preop prep. This is the first I've heard of that. My preop diet was stuff like eggs or lean meat at breakfast. A protein shake between breakfast and lunch. Meat and veggies (I usually did salad with rich greens and chicken) for lunch or dinner, and another protein shake at some point. I never felt hungry before surgery. Well, until I stopped eating at midnight the night before surgery. I didn't even have surgery until 5:30pm the next afternoon which was the weirdest time I ever expected to have my surgery done but I was definitely starving then. Lol! -

I had my surgery June 10th so I'm on day 10. I was terrified but learned really quickly that the surgical pain wasn't nearly as close to challenging as getting that gas pain out. That was rough and I can now feel WHAT I suspect is some surgery pain but it pretty much just feels like I've done a few too many crunches, which I can assure you, has not happened. 😂 I only had to take my pain medication the first full day home from surgery and I'm sure it was still the gas pain. Otherwise, pain has not really been an issue which is awesome! The clear diet has not been fun at all, and this second week isn't much fun either by being able to add protein shakes but only four more days until I get to start experimenting with pureed foods! Since I LOVE chicken, tuna, and egg salads, that's what I'll be prepping up for my puree week and first week back at work. Super excited about the possibilities of this new journey! Soft vegetables on day nine? My nutritionist says clear to thick liquids, like protein shakes, on week two. I'm genuinely curious because I'm starving so if I can try other things, soft smooshy things, I might do so. Because I have zero energy and am exhausted on just clear liquids and protein shakes.
