Cinnamon Spice Almost Keto Pancake 2 tbsps coconut flour, 2 tbsps wheat flour, 2 tbsps water, 1 tbsp milk, 1 egg, 1 tsp baking powder, 1 tsp sugar substitute, dash of salt and spices. Bigger than it looks so I ate ~1/5 and gave the rest away. I could not find a decent recipe builder to accurately give me cals for this so I'm estimating 300 cals. Rant: I officially hate coconut flour. It's too hard to work with. I have wasted so much on failed attempts. I usually have almond flour which is a lot more forgiving, but I ran out. -

That's great. I've been looking at a keto pill ad online. Wasn't sure if it would work or not. Curious about it.

So update on my preop diet to lose 20 lbs by May 6th... I've already lost 30 lbs since I started dieting 20 days ago! I really didn't think it would be this easy. I've been staying at 1300 calories a day, drinking my whey isolate drinks and I've been taking these keto pills too. I've started taking a multi vitamin as well. I can't wait to see how much I lose by the time I meet my surgeon. Sent from my G60 using BariatricPal mobile app

Stopping ketosis? Yes and no, depending upon how one defines it. As far dropping ketones that are detectable in a urine test, that is a normal result of burning off your fat stores - which is what we are trying to do - irrespective what diet is used. All it takes is a suitable caloric deficit, so that is pretty much unavoidable if you are losing the weight that you want to lose. If one is aiming for high numbers or pretty colors on a keto stick, and gushes about how the bad breath and body odors that they are getting is a sign of burning fat, then no, that is not at all necessary. I followed a very strict "no fad diet" regimen - no Atkins, Ornish, Paleo, South Beach, Zone, Keto, etc., and had to work to stop the loss when I approached goal weight. I quite specifically avoided symptomatic ketosis (along with other classic low carb diet symptoms such as fatigue, lethargy, brain fade, hypoglycemia, etc.) by maintaining as balanced a diet as reasonably possible within our post bariatric protein and low calorie requirements, though ketones were detectable in the normal urine tests - that is normal when metabolizing the fat. One does not need to go overboard on consuming excess fats to drive one into ketosis - that is just part of the keto fad and has nothing to do with burning your fat stores in losing weight. The protein in your urine may just be a passing thing (no pun intended...) or may be indicative of something else. I have often passed detectable amounts of protein in my urine, even well before WLS, but that's just me. It can be a sign of possible kidney problems, or maybe not - it is something that we monitor. Our post bariatric diets are not so much high protein, as they are adequate protein bur low on everything else; in a year or two when you are much lighter and maintaining your weight, your protein levels should be about the same as they are now, but everything else will be higher to fill out the extra calories that you need to maintain, and to provide the nutrition that you need. If you look at bariatrics historically, you find that dietary style (low fat, low carb, keto, paleo, etc.) makes very little difference to overall weight loss, as that is primarily determined by the caloric deficit created by eating so little for that first year or so. Indeed, if you look back 20-30 years ago, patients were often advised to "eat like you always have, just less...." and it worked. Of course, what didn't work was them maintaining the loss as they never learned to eat sustainably to maintain their weight. So, it is entirely reasonable to eat a basically healthy diet that, for a time, is protein biased (we can supplement most everything else) and not worry about whatever the fad diet of the day happens to be - eat with an eye towards how you should be eating five years from now. Those who follow the fad diets have the same problem that non-WLS dieters have - learning how to eat sustainably once they have lost the weight and no long have to "diet".

Stopping Ketosis
catwoman7 replied to CelinaLambeth's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I would say most bypassers are not on ketogenic diets once they're a few months out. Many are at first, though. The only time my diet was ketogenic was during the liquid phase. Once that was over, my clinic promoted a more-or-less balanced diet (although I know many clinics recommend a low carb diet until you're in maintenance). Most of the WLS patients I'm friends with have been in maintenance for awhile (sometimes a long while). Some do Keto (or IF....or Weight Watchers) when they want to lose a few pounds, but otherwise their diets are fairly balanced. (btw - when I want to lose a few pounds, I count calories and watch my portion sizes - but different strokes for different folks...) -
Overeating & Food Obsessed Again...need direction please
happydance3 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Long post alert!! SW 212-225 LW 164 CW 185 5’ 2” I was sleeved 10/2017. I lost weight well and fairly quickly. I wasn’t done yet. Then I didn’t follow the rules. I didn’t sit down to meals, I didn’t take my time, I didn’t chew my food- I started inhaling it again, then the slider foods. I’ve never been a really junk foodie but pastas, bread, chocolate, etc. I stopped drinking all the water. I stopped taking vitamins (Lost tons of good muscle mass). Never exercised. I’m on the fence about the stomach stretching thing. At 3 years I can eat a surprising amount but the restriction is definitely still there. I know it is because I still get nauseous if I eat too much. I still feel extreme pain if I eat too much. So much dumping still (no gall bladder). I am food obsessed. I think about it constantly. I google recipes all day long. I eat until I am hurting & in such pain, it’s scary. I don’t stop when I’m full, I only stop when it hurts too much. And as soon as it doesn’t hurt anymore, I eat again. That’s usually within the same hour. I can’t remember the last time I’ve felt a hunger pang. I’m sober again and using food as a replacement for alcohol. COVID has me depressed and turning to food. Sheltered in place = solitude, boredom and loneliness. Laziness. Don’t give a sh*t...Excuses, Excuses, Excuses. I have tons of unresolved issues (ya think!!!?) and I was on a great path back to good healing and “something” happened almost 2 years ago and I’ve been derailed ever since. And, as ridiculous as this may sound, I have forgotten how to eat per my VSG. Fat & carbs or no fat, no carbs? Seriously I am so lost about what to eat and what not to eat. (I think thats from Keto, Atkins, WW, Paleo overload...WHAT DO I EAT?) Please don’t berate me for failing. Please don’t tell me to get my butt to therapy. I’m in a program and working through things but my eating is out of control right now and it’s starting to frighten me. Please offer some good suggestions, a solid regimen to follow to get me back on track. I need rules again. Thank you so much and Stay Well Everybody- 10 replies

Is it possible to try plain old Keto instead?

😂 Get used to it. When it comes to the topic of diet, food, calories and especially carbohydrates it can get quite controversial. Low-carb or keto diets are very en vogue these days, just as low-fat diets were a few years ago. Go with what you feels most comfortable to you and don't be afraid to make adjustments as time goes by and weight goes down. Your nutritional needs will change over time. And go with what feels most comfortable to you, not to your best friend, your surgeon, your dietician, a random person online, your mother or Uncle Bob's best buddy. Talk is cheap. That includes dietary advice.

They are guaranteed to help lighten your wallet. Beyond that, it's very unlikely that they will do anything to help your weight - just like all those other miracle weight loss pills. They might have some caffeine in them to make your feel more energetic or something, but given that keto diets don't do much for your weight (other than some temporary water weight loss, which we all get when we go into a significant caloric deficit) these things aren't going to do anything for you, either. You would be better off putting the money spent on these types of things into a few sessions with an RD to learn how to eat to sustainably manage your weight in the long term.

I did a quick google search on this and it seems kinda sketchy. It claims to "put you in ketosis" and "keep you there longer". I'm not going to go into the explanation into this here but it can easily be found on the internet. That said, it looks like there is very little supporting research that the consumption of these types of supplements actually aid in weight loss. You are probably better off just doing the keto/low carb diet proper if you are looking to getting into ketosis. Though it looks like you already have them, so it wouldn't hurt to try them and see if they work. Good Luck!

A normal day of food post op?
BigSue replied to TrueNorth1's topic in Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Forum
I'm 4.5 months out. I eat 3 meals per day and no snacks (except 3 calcium chews per day for a total of 45 calories). My meals are typically 100-200 calories each and I typically eat 500-600 calories per day. If I'm low on protein for the day, I'll drink a protein shake or protein hot cocoa in addition to the meals. My meals are about half a cup each, a little more if there's lettuce because I figure that by the time I chew it up, it loses a lot of volume. Breakfast examples: Half container of triple zero yogurt with half a scoop of protein powder, raspberries/strawberries or PB2, keto granola or nut clusters Scrambled egg with 1/2 ounce cottage cheese, turkey sausage link Protein pancake with strawberries/raspberries and whipped cream Half packet of protein oatmeal with 1/4 scoop of protein powder, walnuts, and shredded carrots 4 ounces cottage cheese with nacho cheese seasoning Lunch: Protein bar if I'm at work; otherwise, same as dinner Typical dinner: Mexican casserole (chicken, cauliflower rice, salsa, black beans, cheese, plain greek yogurt) Salad with chicken and light dressing, topped with crushed Quest protein chips Chicken salad (shredded chicken, plain Greek yogurt, ranch seasoning), lettuce, tomato on half a 1 net carb tortilla with 1/4 ounce cheese White chicken chili Taco bites (shredded chicken, salsa, black beans, lettuce, tomato, plain Greek yogurt on Quest protein chips) Ricotta bake with turkey meat sauce Chicken or pork with sugar-free BBQ sauce, green beans -
Anyone have chest pain after drinking?
ichabodny replied to Carmela_801's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
This, and how. Exactly with the little burps and hitting the sternum. I'm 3 months post-op. I just accidentally had to buy a propel water on a trip and found the bottles it comes in to make things much easier for me, maybe the nozzle slowing it down while I drink. I do get in my 64 oz but I used to drink 96 oz easily daily and it was no problem. Now, however, I really have to stop myself from drinking too fast. With me, times are different too. I don't know if it's because I move around more and exercise first but morning is the worst for me until mid to late afternoon. Then it seems easier to just keep drinking in small amounts. It can take me hours to drink my 16 oz and major chest pain, no matter how slow I go, until past 3 or so, then I can take the same in about 45 minutes. Cold, or ice cold, seems to do better for me with drinking but keto ice cream or ice cream gives me amazing pain for about a half hour after even if I melt it down. If I freeze my water, it goes down easier but this really varies per person. Don't stress yourself too much with this-things do even out more as you go. -
A normal day of food post op?
ichabodny replied to TrueNorth1's topic in Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Forum
I am just now at 3 months. Everyone is really different with this honestly. I had a tough time-just passing Thanksgiving, I am getting a bit more used to foods I can handle but I will be honest and say there are a lot of limits. Some days are still worse then others-Doc said that's normal for the first year. I try to eat my normal keto diet from before but still have to add Atkins shakes. Cold does better for me then hot so I will sometimes freeze a drink in a bowl for lunch and have that. It definitely helps. Turkey meatballs are my staple these days if I can mix it with a little sauce. They say bread is difficult but I will have at least one or two slices of Aldi zero carb bread- it gives me a lot of fiber and some protein. I toast it then put either the turkey meatballs (smushed and mixed) onto the bread then let it get a bit moist or, if it's a good day, I can try some egg and then chicken that's been boiled with keto barbecue sauce (just a tad-it has about 3 net carbs). Sometimes I can handle deli meat and cheese seems to be fine for me if I really chew well and take tiny bites. I also have my tablespoon or two of genepro for the missing protein. Veggies are still really hard for me but I do take a v8 green and I have been trying little bits of apple. Banana was pretty hard and other fruits can be a toss-up depending on the day. I started to mix a bit of sweet potato mashed with almond milk and some of my boiled chicken together for some meals and peas mashed can be ok if I can handle it. Popcorn that's air-popped is doable for me and seeming the easiest to take down in small amounts (no butter or salt-just plain). I will take it as a treat- a cup or so. I also live on the sugar-free popsicles with 15 calories when my store has it in stock. Tillapia works for me some days as well if it's not baked or fried but boiled in the bag. My calories are still only at around 800 on good days but I'm exercising well and labs are showing the genepro is doing well with the protein. Probably not the best example for you as you can be better able to handle varieties then I am right now but it's where I'm at. Had bypass Sept 1. -
I haven't weighed myself since I came home from the hospital. I am trying to only weigh in twice month, just so I do not get too hung up on the numbers. I just moved from clear liquids to full liquids today but I was little afraid of that too, not because I have pain just because in my head I am telling myself it could be bad...lol I did get 2 shakes in today so I thought that was decent progress. I have my first follow up on Tuesday and I will weigh in at that time. My husband is set up for this next month and we set the winter aside thinking it was going to be a long process and kind of planned on some bumps so I am pleased he is seeing a smooth ride so he does not get nervous and chicken out. I hope this is the beginning of a smooth process and we all get to where we need to be. I am reading a lot about the Keto Eupohoria (not sure on that spelling) but I am almost thinking my energy may be coming from that. I am not complaining because I am knocking out end of year here as well!!!

Healthy versions of junk food
GradyCat replied to BigSue's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I am 2 years post-op and I have never liked food, so sweets were my downfall and continue to be my go-to snack. So I rely heavily on protein bars, keto bars, sugar-free snacks, etc. to satisfy my need for sweets. It hasn't added pounds to me. It works out well for me. -

Buffalo chicken soup, celery and carrot stick. Homemade blue cheese dressing. A bit high in kcals at 350. Ate all of the soup and the veggies, with only a tiny bit of the dip. Hubby is eating keto right now and was VERY happy 😊 -
Why different diets from different doctors?
ichabodny replied to Normandagle's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon did the very same with me. Our NUT is in house and works as part of the team but I do have a Dr in the team besides my surgeon. My Dr is more strict with my diet while my NUT is a bit more easy-going. At this point (close to 3 months post op now) my NUT has always answered me by saying to not worry about calories right now. They just want me to get my proteins met first and foremost and then add anything I can else that is on the list (it does include potatoes, beans, fruits, keto ice-cream, etc) and she says to add some potato if it's easier to eat with chicken to get down. However, I read about a lot of different protein level preferences (always the same lowest but some require much, much higher) and even vitamin differences. Just follow what your Dr says. A lot also can depend on specific health problems, ages, prior history, etc. -
What are you eating? Are you tracking your daily intake and macros no matter whether you're pre-op or post-op? Share your macros. Here's what I ate yesterday: Calories: 1075 Carbs: 24 Protein: 128 Fat: 56 Sugars: 9 Yeah, I know the "fat" looks high, but hubby and I are doing the "Carnivore Diet" right now, more rigid form of keto with focus on protein and fats and reduction of carbs and sugars. Tell us what you're eating.

With COVID we aren't having a family get-together. It's just me and hubby. I'm making some Keto sausage balls and keto brownies and that's about it. We aren't big on tradition so not having the turkey and trimmings isn't a big deal to us. Hubby and I are on the Carnivore (stricter Keto) diet so we wouldn't be eating much different than any other day anyway. Focus on Thanksgiving as being with family as opposed to being about food.

I drink Bang Keto Coffee Cookies and Cream and they are not carbonated. They are delicious. Can someone please tell me why some surgeons say no caffeine? Is it forever or just while healing? I was sleeved Sept 2, 2020. I have been drinking Bang for about a month. Do some surgeons think caffeine effects your weight loss?

Weight regain...I don't know where to start.
mi75 replied to Ann Parde's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
I have a very similar story, am 6 yrs post VSG. Had regain about 2 yrs out and it took getting some ugly medical news to get me back on track for good. I went strict keto, lost all the regain, lost about 20 more and am doing good. But it's always going to be a fight for me. I had to commit-LITERALLY, FINALLY- to giving up a lot of foods that I'll likely never eat again and that was a huge mourning process. I've been about 3 yrs strict Keto and love the lifestyle, but it's not for everyone. And it can be a challenge. yes we can have all that fat, but it's still really hard knowing I'll likely never eat most 'regular' foods again. Pre-surgery I had hoped I would be able to eat all things in small amounts again someday- but that got me on a slippery slope leading to the regain. So I have to stick to what works. I've found that when it comes to staying on track, I do great with total abstinence but really BAD at moderation.
