Pre-op weight loss & insurance approval
GoneFishin replied to Walk_By_Faith's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have BC/BS of IL. Their requirements don't stipulate and weight loss during the 6 month program. In fact, here are their words: · It is expected that appropriate non-surgical treatment should have been attempted prior to surgical treatment of obesity Non-surgical treatment of morbid obesity appropriateness criteria: · Medical record documentation of active participation in a clinically-supervised, non-surgical program of weight reduction for at least 6 months, occurring within the twenty-four (24) months prior to the proposed surgery and preferably unaffiliated with the bariatric surgery program. [NOTE: The initial BMI at the beginning of a weight reduction program will be the “qualifying” BMI used to meet the BMI criteria for the definition of morbid obesity used in this policy.] · A program will be considered appropriate if it includes the following components: 1. Nutritional therapy, which may include medical nutrition therapy such as a very low calorie diet such as MediFast or OptiFast OR a recognized commercial diet-based weight loss program such as WeighWatchers, Jenny Craig, etc. 2. Behavior modification or behavioral health interventions. 3. Counseling and instruction on exercise and increased physical activity. 4. Pharmacologic therapy (as appropriate). 5. Ongoing support for lifestyle changes to make and maintain appropriate choices that will reduce health risk factors and improve overall health. Good luck...Dan. -
"Head Hunger"
Kelly1334 replied to ..................'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm two weeks out and I've found that I was struggling with the same thing. I've literally had to remove myself from situations where my family is eating crap food bc I feel so compelled to eat it. Stuff I never ate like chips n soda seemed appealing. Just remember to remove yourself from the situation and also your insides are healing. You don want to have to go through the entire process again bc you made careless decisions. Also once you start seeing the benefits of he weight loss and fit into your skinny jeans your relationship w food starts to change. Your no longer eating as a hobby your eating for fuel. Yesterday at my post op I wore size jeans that were two sizes smaller and I was like yes! And it clicked. I'm trying to surround myself with people who are more into fitness and active then food. Only two weeks in its hard but keep in mind why you made the decision in the first place! You can do it! -
Just free weights. I own 1lb., 5lb. and 10lb. ones. I used to have a weight bench and curl bar so I could add weight onto it. You can google curl bar and see what I mean or I can point you to some links. I had to sell the weight bench and curl bar, unfortunately, bc I have tendon and ligament issues and am only allowed to lift up to 10 lbs. That's why I now use free weights. Oh, and these tendon and ligament issues have nothing to do with the DS. They began long before I had it done.

What Are You Packing To Take To The Hospital?
ilgc replied to CurvyCakes's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Phone, kindle, some toiletries, comfortable/ loose clothing, slippers and gasX strips. I'm not anticipating much dry mouth bc my surgeon allows water after surgery but in case yours doesn't/ you don't know I'd bring biotene too. -
Confused About Expected Weight Loss
KartMan replied to Cathy Mettille's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's BS, it's statistics. The 65% comes from the average weight loss of the entire population in the study. Some people work the tool, and some don't. If you put in the work, there is no reason to believe you can't lose 100% of your excess weight. I had LapBand in 2009 and lost all of my excess weight (about 110 lbs). I didn't actually start exercising till I was at about 80% from goal, and frankly not even a lot at that point. The most important factor was watching what I ate, because it is definitely possible to cheat. I kept the weight off for years too, it was only recently that my band failed that I started to gain weight. -

After doing the all day liquid diet, I'm not physically hungry its more of a mental hunger. If that makes any since. My mouth is dry, n all the above. I will keep u guys posted on what to expect bc I know there is always more information n stories that people want to hear..The good the bad and the ugly! -
Anyone had surgery to have a baby...
kjordan83 replied to linda305's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
I'm right there with you ladies! I'' 11 days post-op and I'll be 30 this year. My husband and I tried for 5 years. I was diagnosed with PCOS and Insulin Resistance about 10 years ago, so we knew the difficulty we were facing when we began trying. When we started fertility testing and treatments, we learned that my husband has very few, very low quality swimmers. That was a shocked! All those years, we thought it was just me. We have never stopped trying, but we adopted our precious girl from CPS 3 years ago. My doc said to wait 18 months. I REALLY want to be at goal weight before I have the possibility of getting pregnant. Like everyone else, doc wants me using BC, but I don't want anymore hormones... I just ordered our FIRST BOX OF CONDOMS! I felt like a dirty teenager ordering them online! Never used them before! Do y'all think that's okay?!?! P.S. I didn't do get sleeved solely to get pregnant, but the possibility was definitely as decision-making factor! I did this so I can live a long, healthy, active life with my precious little family! If God grants us a birth child, we'll be ready for it! -
So, my wlj started in October of last year. I applied for a gastric plication study and was denied due to a discovery of a few SMALL gallstones. I had researched extensively and was so bummed (or depressed) when they told me i had been disqualified. My insurance doesn't cover any form of wls, and there was no way (I thought) I could ever afford any weight loss surgery on my own. I have tried EVERY single diet ever, I swear... the latest being the hcg diet. It worked, but I gained most of my weight back once I stopped taking the injections. One night, it hit me to research the gastric plication in Mexico. Low and behold, I found that it was actually in my reach (financially!) After researching the Drs, hospitals and procedures, I decided to go with alighterme.com and booked my gastric sleeve with Dr Lopez. I am scheduled for surgery on July 12th! I found that the gastric plication was a great surgery, but, I found that the sleeve was just a better fir for me. I am very excited and CANNOT wait to start my new journey! I am not worried about the flight, having surgery in MExico (bc I have read nothing but good reviews), how I will feel afterwards, OR being completely alone for FIVE days, I am most concerned about leaving my 2 little girls at home! (ages 4 and 1) I am so excited I found this board, and cant wait to talk more with you guys!!!

Hey everyone, I do not like being the bearer of bad news, but we need to work together and get some help here…brace yourselves. I don’t know if many of you have heard, but it has recently come to my attention that there are NO MORE DATES being given out for WLS through the Richmond bariatric program with Dr. Sampath or Dr. Nguyen. The funding for this program has been cut and there are no more surgeries scheduled after October at this time. For those of you just finding out, I am incredibly sorry for having to share this news with you. For those of you who already knew, I am also sorry to think of how this might be affecting you and your families at this time. Some of you may be waiting for your first consultation at this time, or just beginning to go through the battery of tests and appointments required in this program. To you I say please, please, please do NOT give up. This program changed my life long before I had my surgery and I can’t begin to stress how valuable the experience was in preparing me. I know the pre-op waiting period is a rollercoaster of difficult emotions and struggles, but there is hope and value in learning about yourself and making changes as you go before having this surgery. We all have unique stories and experiences that have brought us to where we are on this journey. For me, it took 7 years to find the right surgeon…when I decided to switch to Dr. Sampath, it wasn’t because I knew my surgery would come up sooner (although that was an exciting thought I considered). What “sealed the deal” for me was knowing that I would be safe and taken care of with West Coast Bariatrics…my post-op care is guaranteed and there is a whole team of specialists willing to help me at any given time with whatever issues or obstacles I may encounter along the way. That, to me, showed a dedication to my health and well-being that I had never experienced with any health professionals before. It was a promise to look out for my best interests and it was definitely the turning point and deciding factor for me. For those of us who have already had this surgery, I’d like to ask that we take a moment and think about how different our lives would be if we hadn’t done this. Those of us who had the opportunity to go through West Coast bariatrics know what tools and experiences are being withheld from countless others in this province who need their help. I also know that there are many individuals who had their surgery in other parts of BC or out-of-province who have shared how they wish they had a program like this to support them before and after surgery. Some of you even have friends and family on the waitlist for the Richmond program and I can only imagine how difficult this news has been to deal with. We all have different issues and histories that brought us to the point of needing this surgery; it is unfair and ridiculous that anyone should be deprived of a life-changing weight loss surgery when there are capable, successful, and willing professionals who want to fight for us. So to all of you, I’d like to ask for some help. The team of specialists at WCB are doing everything they can to support patients through other branches of their program, but they are stressing the importance of reaching out and contacting our Minister of Health in BC and speaking to our MLA’s. They believe that we can make an impact by speaking out in volumes and showing the government that its constituents care enough to demand a change. I am not a political person in any way, but this is an issue that directly affects me and many of my loved ones so I cannot bear to sit idly by. Many of us in the support group for WCB patients on Facebook have already written letters and sent emails or been in direct contact with our MLA’s. At this time, anything helps! Some of us are reaching out to the media as well. Family members, co-workers, friends…anyone who knows about you, your struggles, and the value of this surgery can help us make a difference if they are willing to take the time to send an email or letter. To contact our Minister of Health, Margaret MacDiarmid, please email her directly at margaret.macdiarmid.mla@leg.bc.ca To get in touch with your local MLA, please visit http://www.leg.bc.ca/mla/3-1-5.htm to find them on the list of BC’s Legislative Assembly. Email them, mail letters, place a call and speak with them...anything! Once again, I apologize for having to bring this up and hope that many of you will reach out to the support systems in your life (i.e. friends, family, support groups, health professionals) to deal with any issues this may bring up. Thank you for getting this far, I appreciate your consideration and hope that we can help West Coast Bariatrics get back its funding so it can keep changing lives and making a difference in the WLS community. Thanks for answering back. I have only been walking on the treadmill. I feel weak and want to start machines for some strength again. Im glad im not the only one who cant eat a cup of yogurt. The doctors pushed me to eat pureed foods earlier then recommend bc I was losing weight to fast. Anyone have any suggestions on how to increase liquids im lucky if I can consume 30 ounces. Yesterday was only 22 -
I was just banded yesterday morning. I didn't have much pain at all yesterday just discomfort. I did however have a heck of a time with the anesthethia . So I'm home now afraid to take the pain meds bc they usually (always) make me sick. I've been uncomfortably laying in my bed for 12 hrs. I'm debating walking on the treadmill vs continuing my semi vegetable state on the couch. I have no gas but it can't be good to just lay around??? Do any of you have a recovery plan for me? I'm not sure what to do today. Also I have a big cut on my lip?!? Thanks in advance

HI Everyone! I'm new to this site. I'm a former Lap Bander -- had emergency surgery to have it removed on May 15. I wasn't able to eat or drink anything and was in horrible pain. I was already schedule for a revision surgery on June 13 but my band slipped and so May 15 it came out. Now I have to wait until September for my revsision surgery. I'm excited and neverous. I'm nervous bc I don't want to have a horrible experience like I did with the band. I was always having trouble and was in and out of the hospital for the past 9mo with band issues b4 it acutally slipped for good. So with this new surgery I'm hoping that life gets easier and the weight ACTUALLY comes off!! The whole non-reversible thing has me a little uneasy but I have to do something or i'll put on what little weight I lost with the band!!

Ok. So my current weight loss is steady but VERY slow. I'm almost 6 months out and down just over 60 lbs. I have lost 13.5 inches from my waist and more all over but I'm definitely not losing it like some folks who say the weight "just falls off". I am spinning and elipticaling for literally every ounce. I know they say you have a year to year and a half to lose the weight. At this pace I won't be at my goal weight in that time frame. And I say mine bc my doctor never really set a goal weight. Just that I should lose between 1-2 lbs a week. So between my 3 month and 6 month visit I am on track. But I'm starting to panic bc while its slow but consistent now I feel like I have this year 1.5 year deadline looming. For all the veterans out there, have you continued to lose (if you needed/ wanted to) after that 1 to 1.5 year mark post surgery? Anyone else know how hard and fast that "rule" is?

Facial Hair & Hair Loss Question
mommy794 replied to MyVSG2012's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There is also the No-NO hair remover home laser, and the new ones are approved for use on the face. I think I will be getting one of these REAL soon bc I have noticed all my hair is growing faster...now I read it's prolly the Biotin... LOL O well it's a trade off bc the hair on my head is thinner..so I'm trying to get a jump on that since my surg is 2-6 but now my leg and face hair is double time -

Clear Liquid Blues
PatientEleventyBillion replied to NightPilgrim's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I would pester whoever clears you for your diets about why you can't be on full fluids. I was on clear fluids for an hour or two before being cleared for full fluids. While no one here can know any medical reasons for your circumstance, if you were discharged I assume you have no issues with vomiting, and you've been checked for leaks.. I personally wouldn't understand why you can't have full fluids. My OR date was last Thursday (April 20) in the morning Leak tests/barium swallow done Friday morning, confirmed all fine Started clear fluids Friday afternoon, cleared for full fluid meal for dinner (soup, Jello, non-SF popsicles), ate that with no issues, was discharged a couple hours later Friday evening on full fluid diet until around May 11th when I can have soft solids. Current diet is mainly water (1.5-3L), 2% milk, high protein M&BS oatmeal, unsweetened applesauce, YOP yogurt drink, and was just cleared via phone call from my case manager to make fruit smoothies. -
