    Sore shoulder?

Yes, its very likely you caused some strain that is resulting in pain. I would imagine, after that much work, you'd be sore regardless of surgery. But as you stated, there are no red flags, so you're probably fine. Post-op constipation is VERY common; its almost unavoidable in those early days. As others have said, fiber and water are your best friends. I use a prebiotic fiber called Just Better Fiber - you can get it from their website or on Amazon. It has been a game changer for me. I was using colace before that, and it only worked partially. Miralax is another option, as it BeniFiber or any other similar supplement. Definitely get on something though, before it becomes a serious problem. And have hope, it doesn't last forever!

    Struggling hard 3 weeks out

Big news for me from this group was broth. I’m now drinking bone broth and the protein content is amazing compared with practically zero I was getting a few days ago. I’m the same as you are so I can’t help much but try and get someone to look up bone broth, get the butchers to give up the bones and get simmering. If you can find some to buy while you’re making your own then great.

Chips and salsa and bad eating day

I can't eat them plain. They have like a powdery texture, hard to explain. I have eaten them as nachos and it was doable but not preferred. I do however, love "popcorners FLEX" protein crisps. I have only had the cheddar sour cream but I think they are very good. If you haven't tried them, give it a go and see what you think. They are cheaper too.

Chips and salsa and bad eating day

Maybe try quest protein chips with your salsa. They have taco flavor that my husband loves. I like the ranch. This way your snack should actually be filling.

    Any July buddies?

I’m July 21, and I started my liquid diet (ok, I get one meal/day of lean protein, green non-starchy veg, and healthy fat). It isn’t terrible, but it isn’t great either!

Am I doing this right am I broken?

Five days ago you had major surgery. Give yourself time to heal. As others have said, the first few weeks suck, but it's not forever and you will in time eat normally. But while your stomach is healing, you have to soldier through the program and hit your protein, water and vitamins. If you need something that isn't sweet, try something umami like a miso soup which will count towards your fluid intake. The sweetness of protein shakes and water drove me nuts, but I managed to offset it in those early weeks with small amounts of savoury liquid soups and unsweetened matcha lattes made on protein fortified soy milk. It's not fun, but it's doable, and you'll be onto the solid phase in no time.
  7. Ugh my first bad eating day. I am just under 2 months out I’ve been cleared for everything except a small handful of things like steak. ive tolerated things fine, everything is good. my uncle made some salsa and i had a couple chips and salsa and i was a gonner i couldnt get enough! I could only eat like 3 chips with salsa at a time. But throughout the day i kept going back for 3 more. it was so good. i didn’t actually eat any real food today. i had my two protein drinks i feel guilty and im still thinking about that salsa. i wish id gotten some protein chips instead 😕 im not here for any real reason but to vent. ive got to get some structure to my eating. I have a terrible habit of living off bites and not meals with nothing measured or weighed. anyways i just thought maybe some others may have began their journey in chaos and could share their stories of getting everything under control.

    Struggling hard 3 weeks out

Thank you ❤️ yeah I am very much dehydrated. A couple days ago I took a laxative even though I'm not supposed to and that absolutely wrecked me yesterday. My pee is dark but I don't really have anywhere I can go for fluids besides the ER which I'd really rather not do. I emailed a local spa type place that has some kind of IV service but they never replied. I just went to the ER last Tuesday for fluids and to try and resolve ongoing constipation issues. I guess I just have to keep trying stuff and eventually I'll get some protein in me . . Oops I meant to quote @Arabesque

    Struggling hard 3 weeks out

Tastebuds are usually out of whack in those early months. Anything remotely sweet made me feel sick, and I couldn't stomach the protein shakes. I found ONE protein water that I could get down. Was it nice? Hell no. Was it a struggle? Sure was! But I made myself drink it. I got additional protein from protein fortified soy milk that I added matcha powder to for a nice unsweetened matcha latte. That's how I got my protein in post-surgery. I could barely eat for the first three months, so I do know how you're feeling. But you have to soldier on through the early phase, even though it sucks. You have to drink your protein even if there's zero pleasure in it. I would often have to lie down after my protein water because I'd feel light headed and odd. It does get better, and the crappy phase isn't forever. Try to remember that. You'll get back to enjoying food and drink faster than you think you will.

No it’s not unusual for things to taste gross. Our taste buds can temporarily change after surgery. Things we enjoyed can suddenly taste awful & food we never liked can be delicious. Definitely try some soups. Soup seem to make you feel like your eating something more substantial. And warm liquids often are more soothing. I even used room temp or warm water to make up my shakes. Some meats can be hard to tolerate - chicken breast is the worst but others struggle with beef. I found minced meats the easiest to eat. I never understand the chew, chew, chew thing - it seems to make the meat dry & tasteless. Glad I wasn’t told to do it. Take small bites (a level teaspoon or less) & ensure the meat is very fall off the bone tender & moist. Use gravies & sauces. Yoghurt smoothies helped me reach my fluid & protein goals. Blend up a high protein yoghurt with milk to a thin easy to drink consistency. You may be in a bit of a vicious circle at the moment too. You feel nauseous so you don’t eat or drink. But not eating or drinking can make you feel nauseous. You may be dehydrated too which is a concern. What colour is your pee? If it is a darker yellow, you’ll need to go to your local medical centre for a fluid transfusion. Try a different anti nausea med. Most are quite small tablets so you should be able to swallow them at three weeks. I’m sorry your surgeon hasn’t been more supportive. And yes, definitely see if you can find a dietician.

Am I doing this right am I broken?

I am so eager to be moving on to the next phase. I have talked to my doctor and they recommended just staying hydrated at the moment and get what protein you can. They say I am dehydrated but according to my urine I am definitely not lol. I am having to go to the hospital tomorrow and get some I.V. fluids in hopes that helps with the dizziness. Thank you for your encouragement!

Am I doing this right am I broken?

The first few weeks are brutal, especially the parts that are all liquid. You'll get through it. But maybe try drinking warm broth (bone broth has more protein than regular broth), soups, etc. They're warm, which can make things easier, and can also help you get your protein in.
  13. I just had a Protein Shake that had caffeine. I don’t think I was allowed but I haven’t had coffee in 10 days and was really craving hard. It was the premier Cafe Latte. So good!

    “Low” BMI Qualifiers?

Hi Bluemoon, no I don’t mind saying. It was $25K at Cleveland Clinic (CC), including all the pre- and post-op nutrition, psych, etc. appointments. I could have found a cheaper place, I know, but I had had a heart valve replaced at CC two years earlier, and just felt comfortable there. I had initially gone to CC looking to get a gastric balloon, but the surgeon said they didn’t do those any more there. He recommended a sleeve or bypass (I hadn’t realized that was an option, even as self-pay), and the rest is history. Worth it? Absolutely! Wish I’d done it years earlier!

    Struggling hard 3 weeks out

Ok, Breathe. Its happened to lots of us and we survived to tell the tale and help others. If you have tried all the shakes and hate them all, try letting them down with milk. Try milk and protein yogurt mixed thin. Try protein water. If all that fails try milk with dried milk powder added to it to boost the protein count. Try warm drinks. Leave the food a couple of days while you up your liquid count. Your Doc has no right being mad at you because you are trying your best. Its your teams job to help you recover, make them help you
  16. I know it's early, only 3 weeks after my bypass. But it's just been one struggle after another. I was increasing my ability to eat and drink for a little while, but I seem to be going backwards now. I can barely force myself to consume maybe 25oz of liquid and 4 bites of food a day. But I can't stand any of the protein I've tried. I found one shake that's okay but I can only tolerate about half of it and not every day. If I have a shake or half a yogurt, I can't eat for the rest of the day at all. I feel sick all the time. Nauseous, dizzy, lightheaded, weak. I use a transdermal multivitamin patch approved by my surgeon. I'm having big regrets. I know it will probably get better later but I feel like it won't ever get better if I'm only consuming water and a couple bites of food (usually yogurt, well chewed soft meat, or sugar free ice cream). I have my 1 month follow up next week. Doc is already mad I'm haven't found a way to meet my protein goals. I'm trying so hard it but it's so uncomfortable to eat drink, even water. I haven't been vomiting so I don't think there's any real problems but I can't survive like this.

Am I doing this right am I broken?

You won't be on liquids forever so your mindset will definitely change. Even adding soups and yogurt helped me SO much. But if you're feeling faint regularly and having trouble getting your protein, I'd make sure to tell your doctor and/or nutritionist. One thing I've seen here is there are many, many post-op diets, and they may be able to ease up some of the restrictions to help you feel better and meet your requirements.
  18. I had RNY surgery 5 days ago. I still have numbness in areas of my stomach, I am feeling faint and nauseous even though I am drinking all the required clear liquids daily. I am struggling to get my 60g of protein. The worst thing though is that I feel like I am STARVING! I get so faint that I lay in bed and it doesn't help at all. I do walk for 5 or so minutes every hour (not counting bathroom visits) All I can think about is food. Is this normal? I want warm solid food instead of cold liquids and jello. I am on phase 2 but the struggle is real. Will my mindset change or will this be how I feel forever?

Got a surgery date! Sept 6th!

I was surprised it was so fast, I only had to do one intro zoom seminar, a zoom nutrition seminar, a psych eval, and some paperwork before they submitted it to my insurance. There was optional support group meetings, but the times were all when I was at work so I couldn't attend. Then it was about 3 weeks from the time I got approved to when they called to schedule my surgery. My theory is that I have a history of dieting and working with a dietitian on my medical records, so they didn't have me take 6 months of classes. I don't know if that's the reason but it's the only thing I can think of. I also did call them to bother them a few times.

    Stall out and depressed

That's true, stalls are just terrible. I am feeling so disconnected from my weight loss journey because the number doesn't move every day or every two days anymore. I am going to contact my dietician if I don't get below 245 in 2 weeks or possibly next week if I choose to weigh myself again. Idk I need to come up with some strategy. I've lost 60 lbs post op about, 30 pre op. I do get nervous because my surgeon said you can expect to lose 100 lbs, what if this is it? Mann, I'd be upset. But yeah, I will be patient and keep making good decisions, getting my water in the best I can and protein. Thank you.

    Not hungry, hate eating

I am a little over 6 months post DS. I've lost 104 lbs, yet I also am having a hard time eating. Food does not sound good and so much tastes horrible. Things I used to LOVE such as fresh strawberries or strawberry flavored sugarless drinks (Crystal light) make me want to gag. I have difficulty getting all the protein (60-80grams/day) and water 60oz. Have to cut off food and water several hours before bed, otherwise nauseated. Foul smelling poops thankfully are lessening but still have to be careful or else accidents can happen.
  22. I know this is posted on here time and time again but I'm so frustrated. I'm getting ready for a cross country move. I really imagined that by this time I'd be in the 230s. I have stalled out for the last 3 or 4 weeks and am so frustrated about it. I keep going in between 248 and 251. I don't know if this is maintenance because im only a bit over 4 months post op from gastric bypass. I have definitely increased my calories but am eating in a deficit. My BMR is around 1900 and I'm eating in between 1000 and 1300 a day plus exercise. I have been slacking in water and have not been having protein shakes at all because I'm getting a decent amount through solid food and don't want the extra cals. How do I get past this? I'm going to stay off the scale until the end of next week but I'm still feeling really down and bad about myself. I feel like a disgusting fat mess honestly. I haven't had these feelings since pre op and I just need to vent about it. I was experiencing a period of mania a week ago for a good 2 weeks straight (I'm bipolar) and missed some of my meds. I think I might be crashing and going through a depressive state. It's not super bad but the weight loss stall is making me have a lot of negative self image and feelings of failure. Should I just get back on liquids for a week or something? I'm losing my mind and getting depressed as hell. I'm taking my meds regularly again. I really only missed like 3 or 4 days and I take a small dosage. So I'm hoping to even back out soon but the stall is messing with my brain and confidence. What do you do? June 2022 surgery buddies

I did not know there were doctors who had no protein after the operation. I would never advocate not following their rules, that just seems so strange. I have to get at least 60g per day starting the day after surgery because, she told me, that's crucial to the healing process. The one thing I would say, never be afraid to talk to your doctor and/or nutritionist and explain the difficulties you're having. I've seen that come up often on these boards and doctors have made adjustments as a result. This is clearly not an exact, one-size-fits-all science, so they may be able to do some stuff to make things a little easier for you without impeding your recovery.

That is very stringent. Although, not drinking clear protein drinks wouldn’t bother me…I couldn’t even get a sip of those down. My advice is always to err on the side of compliance. Too many people play fast and free with the guidelines and run into issues. You are almost there! Good for you! I found that the stricter guidelines helped me meet my hydrating liquid and protein goals. Also, beef broth (low sodium) was a godsend for me. Just rest for now, your stomach is still healing! ❤️
