    Question about pouch

From what I've been told once you stretch that pouch out from eating to much it will not shrink back. This is why people have to have gastric bypass revisions if they stretched it out to much and want to start over. I think this would only be necessary if you really went back to old habits. If you really want detailed information ask your surgeon about this and they can really give you the best answers. I'm only repeating what I've been told I'm not an expert. I should also say I've not fallen off the wagon I'm still on the right ride.
  2. So, I am back yet again, I've been gone for a while. A little history about myself, I'm a nurse (yeah, I know), and I had lap band done in 2009 with removal in 2015, gastric sleeve in Sept 2015. I lost about 40 lbs with the band and gained it all back after 2 babies- no big issues with the band other than vomiting from stuck food. I decided to have the sleeve done last year and have only lost 50 lbs. My highest weight was 309 (pre-sleeve) and I currently weigh 259, my lowest was around 253, so I have started to gain some of my weight back. The sleeve was great, but just not for me. I was told by my MD to do the bypass after the lapband, but I was just too scared. So, after doing a little research on mini gastric bypass, I am thinking of having this surgery. My only setback is that I have to go to Mexico to have it....Yikes! I have researched different surgeons- Dr. Ortiz, Dr. Garcia, and dr. Ponce de leon. What are your experiences with this type of revision? What MD would you recommend? What are the conditions of the hotels that you stay in? How is the staff? English speaking? I do have a cardiac history of heart failure from previous pregnancy. So, I need someone who will give me the extra TLC that I need.

    Very excited!

So sorry about that surgeon!! I'm fortunate because I told my surgeon that I failed and he told me that the band failed me, so I had a more positive experience. I find it terribly embarrassing to have gone through surgery and couldn't lose weight with even that. I had mine in 2009, and now he tells me that at that time the band was THE THING and they were pushing it because it seemed like a miracle, but now only five years later they're constantly taking them out. I have my revision on Tuesday the 19th. By now you're recovering, hope all is well!

    Surgeons Stats...

Revising a band isn't rare. Stanford (ca) recommend it to me because of my band issues. They made sure to walk my insurance through because my BMI was under 30. It is rare to place bands these days, at least at a hospital like Stanford which has experts in the field who are teaching doctors. My doctor did 3 revisions after mine on 12/15. But they also have a strong belief of taking the band out and allowing 2 months of healing prior to the next surgery.

    Ball of nerves

Hi Reese, I was in about the same situation but I revised from lapband to bypass. I got my band in 2012 and started having significant reflux last summer. I had my band unfilled which helped the reflux but I packed on 40 pounds. I went to my bariatric surgeon and talked about revision to bypass; they said I had to go through the whole program again, which I did. I had the band removed and the bypass done March 21. Reflux is one of the signatures of the band as well as the sleeve, I'm told. I wish I had known that in 2012 - I would have done the bypass then instead. Luckily, the worst part so far has been the pre-op liquid diet. That's just something you have to get through; after the surgery you're on clear liquids but it's easier because your new stomach is so small. My advice is to keep your eye on the goal and work through the tough parts. Good luck, I'm sure it will go well!

    Pre-Op Diet and Surgery

I'm here to attest to the fact I was fearful all the way being wheeled into the OR. I've had many surgeries and as my doctor put it the scars I have look like the road map of Europe . Every time I have had surgery I have had that fear but came out of it fine everytime. I think it's normal to be a little anxious before any type of surgical procedure. My doctor requires an overnight stay for all his patients having Lapband surgery in case of any complications. If I was having the sleeve he would require a 3 day stay and 4 days for bypass surgery. He's pretty thorough. When I had my port revised because it flipped I was released early evening. I went in the OR at 7:30 was in recovery by 9 and released at 4 PM. I still had that fear going into the OR but was given an injectable sedative to relax before being operated on. Thank God everything turned out OK. Best wishes to you!
  8. Hi all, In a nutshell, I'm so discouraged by my band... Let's begin by saying that I was banded on 5/4/12 initially. My preop diet went great...I lost 14 pounds in those 2 weeks doing the Optifast diet per my surgeon. Postop was also fine...no initial complications except that I've never felt the "restriction" like my doc says I should. My doctor wants all his patients to only be able to eat 3-4 ounces per meal. Understandable, assuming my band would actually work. I've lost count of the fills I've had...I think I'm up to about 5 since my surgery. With each fill, I only feel restriction for the first 72 hours at best...after that, nothing. Needless to say, I am so frustrated. An the real kicker is that on 10/12/12, I had to have a revision done because my port flipped, but according to my doc, my band was fine. The most weight I've lost was 51 pounds...now I'm at 43 pounds. I've got 108 pounds to goal weight and I feel like I'll never get there because I'm just yo-yoing right now. Has anyone else felt this way? If so, what did you do? I want to get my records and go elsewhere for a second opinion. In my case, I selected a doctor that is 50 miles from my house because I thought he was the best one for me...but his idea of coming in every 3 weeks for more "fills" that cost me a $25 copay and $20 in gas each time is not fesible. In addition, I just started working nights as a Nurse Tech...since doing so, I seem to be holding on to more weight even though I'm being run ragged. Since I've already had one issue with my band and feel like it's leaking, I want to revise to the sleeve, but I am so hesitant that it would even work. Any feedback on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all!

    Venting about bad news

Great, amazing, wonderful news!!! I heard back from the surgeons in Phoenix, and they do revisions. The are SO encouraging. I've already been assigned a patient advocate. She said I should call and get an appointment on a Tuesday, so I can take their WLS 101 class while I am there. My sister lives about 45 minutes away from there, and I think I can stay with her if I need to spend the night. i have several "assignments" to do this week. Call me cardiologist for an appointment for clearance. Find a psychologist for the psychological clearance. call my PCP for his letter of recommendation. I downloaded all the forms to give the doctors so they can just fill them out, so the process will be a little easier. I have hope again! Now I can go back to my plan of trying to replace a meal a day with a Protein drink. I think it will make it easier to try different protein powders, and get used to eating less. In a week or two, I will try to go to replacing two meals a day. Since I know the surgery is in the future, I hope that will motivate me to stick with it. Thank you all for your encouragement!

@@dhrguru Ketosis is something I did not think about! I woke up this morning with the worst taste in my mouth and couldn't figure out for the life of me what the heck it was - I brushed my teeth before bed! Ketosis explains it! Thank you for bringing that to my attention @@kevmasci Hi! Welcome to BP and good luck on your revision! I don't know if you're allowed pudding on your diet, but sugar free rice pudding (Jell-O Brand) saves me on my pre-op diet! I though it would be gross but I was dead wrong and it has been one of my favorite things about this diet, and the unsweetened applesauce! My surgery is next week and I am full of nerves, but I know that the rewards outweigh the risks so I start thinking positive and remind myself that I'm choosing to save my life and I calm down. I trust my surgeon, I trust his staff and I know I'm going to be ok. Keep your head up and know that we're all here for you xo

    Two questions

Hi peeps! Two questions for everyone if you can answer.. 1. I am 14 days post op (band to sleeve revision) and the largest incision is almost healed however the internal tissue surrounding the incision is super hard.. Does the density of that tissue minimize overtime!? 2. I notice many folks are experiencing stalls 3-4 wks out what did you do to overcome it?
  12. Hey everybody!!! I hope you are all having a fantastic day! I am about 1 1/2 weeks out form surgery (surg date 1/7/16) and yesterday I started to get this weird feeling in my stomach. I am a lap band to sleeve revision and did not have alot of pain. Most of my pain is the incisions. This feeling is hard to describe but it is a combination of tingling at the base of my esophagus and light pulling in my chest/upper stomach. I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and if I should contact my surgeon or not. I have stuck to my post op diet and have not eaten anything I shouldn't. Should I be concerned?
  13. An experienced revision surgeon will have the skill, knowledge and resources to help you make a decision about what to do. Implanting a band around a virgin stomach is much different than putting a new band on a damaged and surgically altered stomach. Best of luck to you!

    Hello

I chose the RNY at my surgeons suggestion. My metabolism is shot and I need the metabolic reset with malabsorbtion. Also: I have Gerd, chances of gerd are high with the sleeve. Sleeve doesn't work with everyone and we have some on the board that are a VSG to RNY revision. I liked that the RNY is the gold standard and that it has a lot of hard facts behind it while the VSG is new and has little long-term research and facts behind it. I'm a previous smoker. If I ever do get stomach cancer, I didn't like the thought of not having any stomach to play with since you lose all your excess with the sleeve. Also, I would never do it or I hope to never do it, but the RNY IS reversible. All the parts are still there. It's risky, buy if you're having enough complications, they can put it all back. It will never be "normal" but it could be an improvement. Permanently removing 80-90% of my stomach seemed just too extreme. Said the girl that has a small pouch and rerouted intestines. lol

    rny / sleeve

Don't get discouraged. I started out thinking I wanted the band because it is reversible, then learned the downsides. Next I looked at the sleeve, but reading some studies that pointed out some concerns with the long term effects. I know many people are happy with their sleeves, but I am older and a revision would not be an option for me if the sleeve didn't prove helpful. In the end, I chose RNY for its track record. Initially, I was put off by the plumbing rearrangement, but my surgeon has done about 6,000 WLS, so I figured he has this all down pat by now. I sailed through surgery and my first months of recovery. I'm very glad I had this done and only wish I'd had it six years earlier when I first looked into it. All things in due time, I guess. It helps to read the posts on various forums about the different surgeries to learn what issues may arise. You just have to keep in mind that most posts are from the small subset of people with issues--the thousands who haven't had problems are out living their lives. Best wishes on your journey!

    Help

I had my revision from VBG to bypass on May 6th. I went in at 287, I gained during surgery 296 (I get it was fluid) but still stuck at 277. And the scale really has not moved in over 2 weeks. Anyone else having this issue? I am over a month and thought it would be coming off faster than that. I do my water and protein. Can not walk a lot due to knee issues.

    Post surgery follow up care

I had my RNY July 2, 2013. My Surgeon was great for surgery but...his bedside manners left sxo much to desire. He did mine and a attempted a revision from Band to RNY. His band had eroded intyo his liver so they couldn't finish the RNY. He ended up with abcesses and the DR dropped him right in the middle of everything. He was deathly sick for 10 months, 3 of which he doesn't even remember. I had Strictures (kind of like scar tissue) so I needed him to do 4 ENDOSCOPES with 3 dialations. He called us "THE PROBLEM CHILDREN"!!! So I fired him. I went to another Bariatric Center they performed my last endo with a dialation. Haven't had any more problems. Hubby eventually went to Mexico for his WLS. They don't offer aftercare either. (BAD CHOICE) Our PCP's are doing the extra bloodwork that is needed and then I have them fax it to the new Bariatric Center so if we have a problem they catch it. I have a list odf what they need to check so I don't need to travel 5 hours unless needed, Good Luck in your journey. Keep is posted on your progress.
  18. I am assuming you want advice. Skip the band and go straight to sleeve. Just go peek at the thread of "band to sleeve revision". I personally dont know anyone 5 years out that still have their band. I lost great in the beginning too with my band. But only for one year then nothing. Well slowly, very slowly started to gain. Maybe 1-2 lbs a month. Then maybe 3 or 4 lbs on vacation. With band you are constantly chasing the "sweet spot" where you aren't too tight or too loose. The sleeve eliminates all that. Just food for thought. If I had to do it over again, I would have skipped all the band drama, sliming and fills. Best of Luck, in your decision and process. Keep us posted <3

    People and their opinions.....

I wonder if your superior friend there has ever read anything about why there are so many banded people getting revisions to RNY. I have gotten mostly supportive comments about the decision to have an RYN, with the exception of one "what the hell are you doing that for?" and yesterday's "You'll lose so fast you'll get hanging skin." People are both stupid and opinionated when it comes to the issue of obesity and its treatment, even the obese can be that way!

    Questions to ask during consultation

There are different types of weight loss surgery. The different types affect the amount of weight loss expected and the speed of weight loss. They affect the revision rate (this relates to how often one might need to have the surgery modified or corrected or adjusted or changed to another type of surgery). I choose RNY gastric bypass because it had the smallest revision rate. It also produced the quickest and deepest weight loss. Also because of a pre-existing medical condition "major acid reflux or GERD", it was the only procedure recommended for this type of condition. But it also means that I have to follow a strict Vitamin regime for the rest of my life because my body no longer synthesizes Vitamins from the food that I eat. The process of getting surgery is not simple. It has many steps. Qualifying for insurance is one of them. But then you need to undergo an evaluation by a Psychologist. There is a half day of pre-op testing to uncover any medical condition that may impact the surgery. Generally there is also a half day of classes in which almost all aspects of the surgery and meal plan and vitamin regime and exercise are covered. Many insurance plans require that you undergo a medically supervised dieting and exercise program in order to qualify.

    I have a few questions..

BeautyLocs40, really sounds like you need another dilation to fix your stricture. It usually takes at least 2 to fix and your symptoms are not normal or okay. I was banded in 2006 weighing 296 and lost 60 lbs.bdole of which came back. Band was not for me as it was either too loose or too tight. Eating was miserable (very tight in mornings and looser at night.) I was a forced bulimic. Had revision jan 3 of 2015 weighing 243. Today, I am 191 and still losing. I was in hospital for two nights. Recovery for me was quite painful at port site which others state. I have seen some in my clinic go back to work in just a couple days. I needed at minimum 2 weeks but really more. I did have a complication a stricture which is common for revisions due to excessive scar tissue. Have had two endoscopes to fix it though it felt fixed the first time my gastoi specialist insisted on doing two I be sure. Since having it fixed, life has been amazing!!! The weight is falling off and I'm not working out much though I should and can. Recovery was tough but totally worth it. Wish I had done this originally. I can eat almost anything now but I try to stay away from sugar and excessive carbs.
  22. Wow!!! That is fantastic! You really are an inspiration. I can not wait for my revision.
  23. I did not have a revision but with RNY it took until I started eating dense foods around week 6 (chicken, beef, etc) for me to feel the fullness.
  24. I also had the revision from sleeve to RNY. you won't lose weight like you did after your first surgery. i was told i'd lose some but not a lot like i did before and that has been the case. At first it felt like i had no restriction but as time went by the restriction came back. Give yourself some time, you are still recovering from surgery. Keep doing the diet and the weifht will come out.

    Too skinny anyone?

I lost 25lbs below my goal weight of 150, BUT I'm only 5'2" so being 125ish isn't unhealthy or too skinny. It puts me right in the middle of a healthy BMI range. I just added back in carbs, and healthy fats to get my body to stop losing. It was a bit a balancing act, and it was weird to continue to lose weight, but my body settled right where it wanted to be and I'm perfectly ecstatic with my results. I also started at 270 so you can imagine that I never thought I'd get to 125lbs. Heck, I didn't think 150 was doable. Please do yourself a favor, and read my blog on here. I have tons of information on the band and VSG. I've had both. The band sucked the life out of me in just 8 short months, destroyed my stomach and it was not reversible. I lost additional stomach tissue during my revision because of the band. Just research, and when you think you've researched enough, read some more. I've sent you a friend request so you can access my blog on here. You'll find current stats on the band, research information on the VSG and tons of my posts of my personal experience from band to sleeve. Best wishes! ! !
