I told my hairdresser that I wanted to go back to my natural color(s)--mostly grey--because post-op from my DS I'd lose hair. She disagreed...said it's an urban legend. I went for my DS..and SHE went for a revision on breast reconstruction (cancer survivor). We BOTH lost hair and now she's a believer. (I also had hair fallout with my band and my abdominoplasty and the breast reduction. But way more with the DS because of the malabsorption post-op.) (I've just started taking Biotin and folic acid because the only time in my life I had decent nails was when I was on prenatal Vitamins. I asked my DS surgeon--a new daddy, so he's up on these things--what was in them that wasn't in the regular vitamins and he said biotin and folate. I'll let you know if it works.)

Medical Review Went Amazing, Except Irritated @ The Hubby!
Lissa replied to Mzluvee's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It seems that you're leaning towards the sleeve, but you should take your doctor's recommendation into account. IIRC, though, you can revise to a GB or DS (duodenal switch) from a Sleeve if there is a need. Some of my reading indicates that the sleeve procedure was originally used in WLS patients as a precursor to a full GB, but the sleeve worked so well it began to be used as a stand-alone procedure. Did he give you other specifics about why the GB might be better for you than the sleeve? Perhaps your doctor is more comfortable performing the GB than the sleeve. In that case, you may want to seek a different surgeon. Ultimately, it is your decision. My surgeon and I discussed all three options (VSG, GB and LB) before he recommended the sleeve, which I had already been leaning toward anyway. Had I wanted one of the others, Dr D would have given me what I wanted, but he made a very clear cut case for the sleeve vs the other surgeries, IMO. -
I agree with RestlessMonkey, and you will never be sure until they see you, poke and prod at you :cursing: I understand pain around the port, I had a port revision due to a problem with pain that I had with mine. Barbie

16 months out and having a few problems with the last 25 pounds
BeckyJane posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I posted this over in the post-op forum, then remembered things over here. Sorry if it is a duplicate! I'm back. It is hard to believe it has been 16 months since banding! I've lost 65 pounds, but have basically plateaued in the last 6 months. I just got a fill yesterday and am definitely feeling a difference. I started running last summer and actually ran/walked a 5k. Then I developed a bladder problem and that slowed me to a stop. I'm told it is more age related, not weight loss related. Now that its under control, I'm starting back to my exercise. Winter is just not cooperating! While I haven't loss weight recently, my clothing size is smaller,so I'm guessing in dealing with the weight of muscle compared to fat. What I m struggling with is a change in surgeon, as mine moved out of state. I within the same center, but the difference in philosophy is creating stress. I think he is basically anti-band and pro- bypass. Anyway, he's telling me that revised stats show only 10% of banders achieve weight loss goals! And that many are having the band removed and getting bypass done because the band hasn't worked. My band has worked, and I know that with a 65% loss of pounds over target, I'm ahead of the stats. But it still bothers me. Have the stats changed? Is the success rate less than we were told two years ago? Are the failures due to those who don't follow the guidelines? (That is what my first surgeon said- that the total stats included tho who drank their calories, didn't exercise, and didn't use the band as a tool to change behaviors) What are all of you hearing? How are you doing on weight loss continuing the second year? Are you struggling or is it going the way you thought? -
Great idea, Lisa! I'm going to make this sticky and when it's perfect we can revise to be a permanent reference. PB - Productive Burp: There are many versions to the PB, but it's basically when slime comes back up often followed by the food you just ate after the food refuses to go down. NSV- Non scale Victory: Something fabulous that happens as a result of weight loss that doesn't have anything to do with numbers, like getting flirted with or picking up something off the floor without falling over. ESOPHAGITIS - Irritation of the esophagus to the point of inflammation. Can be caused or exacerbated by a too-tight band keeping food from passing through the stoma and "stacking up" in the esophagus. STICKY PM - Private Message: If you want to say something privately to another member, just click on their name for an option to send them a private message. ACID REFLUX FILL - Addition of saline to the band's reservoir to tighten it and create a smaller opening from the pouch into the stomach. Usually done for the first time no less than 6 weeks after surgery when stomach has fully healed and the band is firmly seated in place. Several fills may be needed to achieve the desired restriction. UNFILL - Removal of saline from the band's reservoir to loosen it, and create a larger opening from the pouch into the stomach. May be done to relieve symptoms of reflux or ease the passage of food for other reasons.

I had my lapband placed in 2007. Initially I lost about 35 pounds and then stalled. After my hysterectomy I noticed weight gain and went back for more fills and basically had 9/10cc. I have never really felt full and the only thing I can't eat is rice and a bun on a burger. Have never felt full but do produce a massive amount of slime that in turn makes me throw up nearly daily. I can actually feel food go down my stoma such as meat! I have gained all my weight back and then some. Earlier in the Spring I started to notice some refflux but nothing severe. Late this Summer it got really bad and I made an appointment with my surgeons office. She totally deflated my band and I swear it made the reflux worse! I am on Prilosec 40 mg. twice daily and eat tums and rolaids like candy with not much relief. Immediately after she took out the Fluid I started belching horribly and haven't stopped for 2 1/2 weeks. A week after they deflated I had an UGI study and an endoscopy that showed no slippage or erosion of the band but a little bit of a Grade A reflux and the lining of my stomach was inflamed. It has been a week after the endoscopy and over 2 weeks since the band was deflated and I continue to have reflux and a lot of intermittent pain on both my right and left upper abdomen and in the middle of my back. I feel so miserable and I want so much to have this band taken out and do some sort of revision but I have some major health issues that make me high risk for any type of surgery. Has anyone experienced the pain thing and what did they do for you? I have an appointment again next week but I feel just miserable. A few months after I had my surgery I had pancreatitis but this feels worse and I had a fever with that. I refuse to let them ever access my port again as fills are always extremely painful because they have a hard time accessing it. I gained 4 pounds since deflation and I don't have an appetite so I am really scared.

I just had my sleeve done on Tuesday December 9. They are making me stay here for 2 reasons. First I am vomiting up Water which is all I've had thus far. I had to take the swallow test 2x because I was too swollen for it to go through on Wednesday. Today I passed it. I'll mention that I am a band to sleeve revision Second, I am now in atrial fibrillation. I have the kind that comes rarely. I'm not typically in a fib. The last time I had a fib episode was in October of 2013. This current time was because they dropped the ball on my meds. I did bring them with me but they wouldn't let me take them. I guess in this part I'm just venting because now tomorrow morning they want to shock me back into normal rhythm. I'm kind of upset because I was asking them for meds to the point I was getting very aggravated. I began to get a bit irate and asked them. Don't you know I could have a stroke? It was very unsettling and I am going to make a formal complaint. They all just sat around saying "ok ok we'll call your doctor." Ok enough of that. So my main advise I want to give is to make sure the hospital you are going to has something in place for you even if it's not the exact meds you take just so you won't have to go through what I am going through. It was horrifying. Yes I'm still in a fib today but yesterday I was reaching almost 200 beats a minute. Today it's still very irregular. But much slower. I was finally able to insist on my meds which my doc said I could swallow with 1 sip of water. It's a slippery slope because an hour or so after I take them I vomit. Just hope some of them are going into my bloodstream. Now for my main question. Did anyone else vomit even after passing the swallow test? I'm drinking tiny sips and about an hour later it comes up. Other than that I have not much pain or gas. This has been happening all day today

I've been struggling with slipping for nearly 4 months now, and finally went in for revision surgery last week. Just do what your dr recommends and know that you can and will get better. I am! It's discouraging, but it can be overcome.

Wow Peaches sorry to hear about your difficulties but I am sure they will get you fixed up once you've had your tests and they find out the problem. Believe me I felt like a failure after regaining all my weight after the VBG years out. God bless Dr. Cobourn for doing my revision and an excellent job I am so grateful to have had very smooth sailing since being banded. Wishing you all the best in a speedy resolution of your issues, keep us posted! Hugs,

Had Lapband out 8 weeks ago...have gain 20 pounds and advice how to lose this and keep it off
Rachel412 replied to honeycomb822's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I don't have any advice, I just want to offer you some support! You said you can't get another band, have you looked into revision to a different surgery? -
Thanks OregonDaisy- I will look into those some more. You are one of the small group of people that I have been keeping tabs on about revision- including WasAbubblebutt, MacMadame, and some others. After seeing all of you having problems, all while playing the game right and ultimately going to the Sleeve has made me re-think my decision. I appreciate all of you being "vocal" about it thus, helping others like myself. I grew up in Oregon by the way, Portland & Milwaukie and then lived in Salem in my teens. I miss it there. SO different then Texas!

very bad gas in shoulder and a question
Parvathi replied to fitzgerald's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
The first time around for me, the shoulder tip pain lasted on and off, about 3 weeks. Walking around seemed to make it lessen. This time however (just had revision surgery over the weekend), walking seems to make it worse, as well as bring on nausea. The only thing that's helped it thus far for me is laying down. Also, a bit of peppermint extract in Water. The nurses at the hospital gave me a little medicine cup full of this and sure enough, even though it tasted horrible, it helped. Hope you feel better soon. -
Usually the first line of action is to remove all of your fill for about a month and see if it slips back into place. This does happen... it's not just a pipe-dream. Second option would be that the doctor could reposition your Band. If you had an older edition Band, he or she could also offer you the option of replacing your Band with one of the newer models. Third option would be to remove your Band and do no revision surgery (other WLS). Fourth option would be to remove your Band and revise to a different surgery. A lot of people who were successful with the Band but have erosion or slippage issues like the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy as it's a restriction only operation. Others decide to go with the more traditional RNY or DS. The choice would be yours, though. You and your doctor could discuss the options.

Symptons of Band slippage and / or erosion
WASaBubbleButt replied to ReadyInCT's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Wow! Four months and you already eroded? I am so sorry. If you erode once you are verrrry likely to erode again. Depending on where it eroded there is a small chance you could revise to another surgery type at the same time such as a sleeve. -
I cant believe you lost sooo much. I would love to hear about your story!!! Maybe start a new thread. With my old band I definately contributed to the `slip` because I always pushed the limits with my eatting. I still went from 105 kilos to 65, nothing to sneeze at, but I didnt put effort into following the rules. For some reason the weight just came off even with me eatting junk & drinking with meals etc. My problems really started when I kept getting more fill to speed the weight loss or to compinsate for my lack of effort. ie instead of revising what I was doing incorrectly, I just wanted more fil. So being too tight eventually caused too much pressure from the pbing & it caused the band to fail. I plan to remember & learn from this 2nd time round. However, this new band has different signals than the old one. I can feel things getting stuck & then make their way down! That never happened with the old band. I can eat everything from chicken to california rolls. I dont know if its because the new band tollerates more food types or because Im not tight enough. It is interesting though to have a second chance, I hope I can make it work......because you know, of course I had to tell everyone in the world about being banded, & I am getting lots of comments!

Hi Karen, I don't know you and am wondering why you had the revision.
-
whoa that's expensive! More common in australia is between 3,000 and 4,000 as a private patient with minimal wait. You just have to fit onto the surgeon's list, which might be a month or so, but 1 year? I'd go see another surgeon. That fee generally means that all your aftercare (and any revision surgery) will be totally free to you as it will be bulk billed.

Thx for the info! I'm already emotional abt it all! All I do is research, and look for answers online. I'm mad that I have to go through this. I thought of revision, but the fact that it could slip again or erode??!! Ummm just not enough confidence to make me revise. I know it was never guaranteed but I swore it was a one time thing!! BUT now after researching like a nut...I see sooooo Many complication stories: slips & erodes--scary! I won't let that happened to me again! I'm worried abt weight gain. I have been with a personal trainer for 5 weeks & now I have to give that up for awhile I guess bc of the surgery. I'm gonna miss my aqua classes :-( I'm more mad abt not being able to exercise the way I have been lately :-( How long does it take to be able to exercise!?

I debated putting a thread out there but I'm happy I have. Just a little support has been nice. I'm not on here nearly as much as I used to be, but there's a woman who is having some of the same things done near to the same time as me. I'm making a new friend and that's always nice. Yeah, I'm not getting my thighs done because my legs are skinny in relation to the rest of me. I had a breast reduction 6 years ago. I'm getting some stuff revised, but no implants. The irony of having them reduced only to get them enlarged was too much for me. And I don't want biggins. Funny how we are so differently shaped.

Anyone have to have a third band replacement?
isabelle290 replied to Char's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Sorry this is happening to you. I am having a revision surgery because my tubing is broken off. I had my surgery in Mexico and since I now have bariatric coverage, I can fix it at home. I am still debating between the band and the sleeve. My doctor says the sleeve is the way to go. He said once you have one complication, there is an 85% chance anther problem will occur. It's no fun having a broken band! I am just thankful I found a surgeon to fix my problem. -
Desperately need a Dr to remove lap-band
Day Dreamer replied to weepoppets4's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hopefully you will find a Dr to do the revision/removal. I have heard many people say they went to a new Dr when they needed the Band out and got the Sleeve instead. Good Luck -
I had my lapband placed in 2009. Lost almost all of my weight (111 lbs) and then it slipped. They defilled me to see if it would fix itself. It didn't. I was told it wasn't surgical and that "it was all up to me" now - the lapband was done with it's job. After a year, and 30 extra lbs, I decided to revise to the sleeve. My insurance paid for it cuz it was a lapband complication. Had my sleeve revision in July. It took my dr an extra 30 minutes to dig my band outa my stomach. Not sure what would've happened if it had stayed in there any longer. So happy with my sleeve. It's going pretty slow (lost 22 lbs in 3 mths). I knew it would come off slower cuz I started lower (174), and I'm only 23 lbs from my goal of 130. I've only vomited once since being sleeved (vs almost everyday- even while totally unfilled with the band) No more pain while eating either. My dr doesn't recommend the band to anyone anymore. He fixes more complication than sees those with none. While I'm thankful that my band allowed me to lose over 100 lbs, I'm also thankful that its out and I'm on my way back down. Good luck with ur decision! Marci
