St. Francis, Dr Oh and Dr. Hirai Group

I work for an insurance company, and I see A LOT of complications due to banding from the St Francis Surgery Center. A LOT of claims. They have a higher complication rate than say the Northwest Weight Loss Center does in Everett. I have never seen a complication due to the band from that center. I would do some more homework and perhaps make that drive to Everett. I had my banding done by Dr Michaelson on 12/3/09, and so far it has been wonderful. The staff has been more than willing to help and answer questions. The nice thing about NorthWest Weight Loss Center, is almost EVERYONE in their office has a band and give such great encouragement. Please RECONSIDER your location.
  4. I was a train wreak. Took an ambien the night before and still couldn't sleep so got up and cleaned the house in slow-motion. The next morning waiting for the procedure I really wanted to leave. I'd had surgery before in situations when I had no choice. Back surgery and a c-section. This felt so different in that I didn't have to do it. I could continue living - a crappy life - but I could. In the end my sister said the most simple and beautiful thing, "You need your power back." She's right, I've given up so much being overweight and unhealthy. What will you get back? Hang onto that as you prepare for surgery. Keep the biggest possible picture in mind. I had a rough start with a couple of random - not gonna happen to you - complications and even with that it was all okay. I'm only a week post-op so I don't want to come across as a vet when I'm not. Just trying to let you know your feelings are normal and show you have the good sense to be worried. Chances are very very slim that you will have complications - and even if you do you and your medical team will get you through them. Is someone with you to keep you from dwelling? Hope this helps. I'm on pain killers still so I may sound a little nutty. PM me if you need support!
  5. It's so hard coming to a conclusion. My husband and I are doing this together. I'll jade whatever surgery I choose first, and then he'll follow suit a few weeks later. He is set on sleeve. I have a friend who has a little more to lose than I do. (I would like to lose about 120-140). She has also chosen sleeve and will be having her surgery a little before mine. No dates are actually set for anyone at this point, but it was like a little pact for all three of us. I'm still so torn. I keep leaning toward bypass, and my surgeon says "you would not be wrong if that is your choice, but you would also not be wrong to choose sleeve,". He is from Pakistan and has a quirky way of saying things. He is pushing for sleeve but, again, I keep leaning toward bypass. It's so hard to make a decision! I'm scared that somehow, I'll be the rule and I'll have every complication known to man, or I'll be the rule and it just won't "work"
  6. I had lapband surgery in March of 2004 and now am exploring the idea of a revision to gastric bypass surgery. I have been very fortunate not to have any complications from the band, I just haven't used it the way it was meant and since I'm so far into the game the chances of me losing more weight are very slim. I just discovered that my health insurance plan will exclude bariatric surgery beginning April 1, 2012. so, on a whim I decided to attend a surgical weight loss seminar sponsored by the healthcare system that I work for. The surgeon seems optimistic that he can remove the band, get my 3 month medically supervised diet complete, and get an authorization from my insurance for the gastric bypass surgery. I'm interested in hearing about everyone's experience with RNY surgery, whether you started off banded, or not. I'm also looking for a community of support and ideas. I haven't been an active participant of a weight loss forum for quite a while, so I'm excited to be back and to make some new friends.

How Much Have You Lost So Far?

Hi! I am an "MIA" Jazzy June!... Needing to get on track.. now that I am finally settling down since constantly moving around after leaving Spain in Sept... Have been throwing up A LOT.. I haven't had a fill since Sept.. but feel myself tightening.. sometimes even throwing up after yoghurt.. really could do with some motivation and stay on liquids for a few days.. (well until I can find a fill doctor who will take me!!.. have had trouble finding one).. anyway.. please adjust me to your list Snuffy.. ( I think you were doing the updates!).. My numbers aren't as great as some and I really want to be a success story!.. I have lost 25 pounds so far... I was 241 now 216... 35 in all THank you and here's to the band.. (still love it even after ALL my complications!) thank you
  8. FWIW, I had a VSG at 55 years old. I have asthma and severe osteoarthritis of my knees (bone on bone, need them both replaced.) My starting BMI was 48.1 in April 2016 before my first visit with my surgeon. My current BMI is 29.9. I'm down 102 pounds and I look 10 years younger. I no longer need as much medicine for my asthma (I will always need some as it is triggered by pollen related allergies) and I no longer need narcotics for knee pain. In fact, I am a competitive fencer (en garde) and fence 5 hours a week. The biggest complication that affected my life was the fact that my primary care doc for 20 years before I had surgery said I just wasn't trying hard enough to lose weight. I've had no significant complications, other than some rashes now due to excess skin. My consult with plastics is on October 20. I don't see a downside.

    Surgery tommorrow help

Flower...It is completely normal to be nervous and scared. I too was scared that something would go wrong but everything was perfectly fine. The risk of complications is low and for me, the benefits of having the band placed far outweighed any risks. Take lots of deep breaths. Best of luck to you.

    WHEN WHEN WHEN??? (venting)

THAT SUCKS. Didn't you puke or anything? What's the point? >>>>>>>>>>>No I didnt puke.. the point was my band wasnt filled yet and then my first fill wasnt tight enough and sometimes it takes time to get it right. What? Are you sure they banded you and you weren't "punked"? >>>>>>>>LOL, I had no problems at all, No port pain, no nothing. I guess I was laying on my side and some ladies asked how I could do that.. I dunno.. Nothing hurt, I didnt have gas or shoulder pain either. Why do they make you stay overnight then? >>>>>>>>To make sure you are able to keep down Water and juice and make sure its safe.. the surgery itself is nothing. I actually had to stay a day extra... ANd I had complications and It was still soo easy.. <!-- / message --><!-- sig --><!-- / message --><!-- sig --><!-- / message -->
  11. Babybleuz, did you check out the band-day stories yet? It's a great thread that might be useful. http://www.lapbandtalk.com/f178/surgery-day-stories-64287/ As far as my story. Yes, I had complications, which resulted in 2.5 days in the hospital. I am doing great now, other than my hormones are wacked out. I took two weeks vacation off and enjoyed every minute of it at home recovering. I have lost 40 pounds so far and have no regrets.
  12. I have to say the 30% hospitalization rate has me very concerned. I’m 66, and have started the process for RNY, which I will have probably in February or March 2018. My only fear is some late onset complication that will reduce my quality of life.
  13. Ditto - 3 WLS first a band in 2013 lost all the weight but complications set in and could not eat or drink and the band came out in May 2015. Gained 30lbs and different surgeon did sleeve on 21 December 2015. Complications and blockage due to scar tissue from the very start, never moved from clear liquid stage. Weight 46kgs but had revision to bypass on 9th May as could not eat or drink. Think I will make the Guinness book for bypass at the lowest weight ever (lol)
  14. I am a self pay patient in new jersey, My insurance company does not cover weight me. I totally have a $13000 cash deposit I saved for this surgery. I found a new jersey surgeon has a $12000 sleeve package, but he does not offer any complications insurance for me to buy. I found a florida surgery he has a $13000 packet including blis complication cost coverage. But i need to pay hotel and flights for me and my companion. But if i really have leaking, infection, etc. How i could immediately fly to Florida for the revision? May I know how are your self pay guys prepare for the complications cost?
  15. Thanks. Your info very help. I can not get complications insurance in US, but can buy it in mexico. Locally means you can use this insurance in Orlando?
  16. I am in Orlando and self pay. My original surgeon didn't offer complication insurance. Therefore, I opted to go to Dr Illan in Tijuana, MX where I paid less and was able to buy medical tourism insurance. It covers me for 6 months post surgery and I can go to local doctors. Luckily, my doctor has very few complications and I am doing great!!!

    Leak

It's not uncommon to have restriction (and I use that term loosely) at 5 years out, that may be from scar tissue underneath the band. To me a Leak is a Leak no matter when it occurs, and it seems obvious that you have one if saline isn't staying in the band. The lap band company isn't going to reimburse you or anyone(sorry that's just a fact) They have all the complications listed in their literature and whether you were given/shown that literature is irrelevant to them. ( they have their backsides covered) What type of injection did you have? that's the first time I've heard that occurring. most often after an unfill a liquid diet is advised to reduce the possible swelling to the stomach. AS LEXUS86985 stated having a removal is not a baratric procedure. Sorry your having problems. keep us posted
  19. I have heard of these cases, but I think they are actually pretty rare. I do work in a hospital and could tell you some similar stories where patients had one thing after the other happen post operatively, but it’s not exclusive to gastric bypass. There are risks to any invasive procedure. I am so sorry you have been through this and I hope you are able to heal and be on the road to good health soon. Hopefully your complications will resolve and you will be done with hospital stays soon, I know it can be depressing and discouraging to be in the hospital so much. Gall bladders commonly do go bad after bypass due to rapid weight loss. Picc line infections are unfortunately too common as the line requires meticulous maintenance practices to remain infection free. The high dextrose content of TPN increases risk of infection there as well. We are here to support you.

    New here and very nervous...

It is major surgery, but the percentage of complications is very low. You will most likely have an EGD as part of preop diagnostics and be put under for that, so you will experience being put under prior to surgery - then you will get an intro to anesthetic that way. Why did you choose bypass? Do you have reflux? Do you want the 'dumping aspect' as a deterrent to sweets? I am just curious.... Welcome and try to read the forums, and ask questions.

    Preparing for gastric bypass surgery

Hi Roni, First, congratulation on making the choice to improve your health! This is NOT an easy journey, but it is one that is SO worth taking. I had RNY on 6/25/2013. I was 48 years old, 5’2” tall and weighed 331 pounds when I first met with the doctors at my Bariatric Clinic. I am now 51 year old and this morning I weighed in at 127 pounds! Now I am working to maintain a loss of over 200 Pounds! This can be done! When I met with my Bariatric team back in January of 2013, I was told that I needed to weigh under 300 pounds in order for my surgeon to perform a laparoscopic procedure – and I REALLY didn’t want to have an open procedure. It was a MAJOR incentive for change. I mapped out changes that I knew I needed to make – and decided that I would make one change every week. This way I wouldn’t feel like I had to change EVERYTHING at once. I think my first change was replacing orange juice at Breakfast with a Protein shake. I am a member of the YMCA and I found a recumbent elliptical machine that I could use for exercise – for 20 minutes 3 times a week! I had SO MUCH knee pain that it was hard for me to walk. Eventually, I gave up my Diet Coke, began using MyFitnessPal.com to document what I eat and drink, stopped drinking with my meals, and increased my Water intake. All of these things (and more) were done slowly, over several months. Did it work? YOU BET!! By time I had surgery I was down 45 pounds. I had a VERY success laparoscopic procedure with no complications. Because I was exercising daily by the time I had surgery, my recovery was quicker and easier than many. I set myself up for success before I ever entered the operating room. YOU CAN TOO! Take it one small step at a time. Those steps really add up. This journey is a marathon, not a sprint! Remember that. As long as you keep moving forward, you are moving! That will get you to your goal. Feel free to write to me if you would like a friend/mentor. Best wishes! Carol

Chronic stomach pain after WLS ?

there are fewer complications with sleeve, but on the other hand, complications with either surgery aren't very common. And if you do have them, most (for both surgeries) are minor and "fixable". I personally would not let that make or break your decision because most of us sail through these surgeries just fine and don't experience complications. However, since you have GERD and choose the sleeve, know that you have about a 30% chance of that getting worse. That was the reason I went with bypass instead (and I've been very happy with that decision). Of course, you may be one of the 70% for whom it does NOT get worse. I wasn't willing to take the chance, but you might be.

Multi Vita and Medic Alert bracelet

Before I left the hospital the nurse strongly urged me to get a medical bracelet to state "no blind ng tubes". She shared a story with me of another patient with VSG who got into a car accident and the paramedics inserted a tube and punctured something. I don't remember the exact complication but the nurse said the patient was going to deal with the consequences for the rest of her life. That was enough for me to buy one. Like a previous poster stated, I got mine from RoadID. They have tons of options to choose from. You can even pay extra to do an entire database with all your med info that lists all surgeries you've had, current meds you're on, allergies, emergency contact etc. I had 2 separate incidents (prior to VSG) where I passed out bc my blood pressure meds weren't balanced right. So I WANT paramedics to have any info they need if something ever happens again. I'm not embarrassed wearing the bracelet. I'd rather have peace of mind that should I ever become unresponsive, the info is readily available to a medical professional.

    Partner/ spouse support

Hi!! Thanks so much for ur post!! I need to do some very deep soul searching before my next Dr.’s visit because as much as I want and need to lose the weight I am still conflicted. I am truly afraid of certain risk factors and long /short term side effects of the surgery. ( I think more than most because I have been through 7 surgeries and have had post op issues with all except one). I realize that staying at my current weight is also a health risk. I do nothing but think, research, and complicate about this 24/7.
  25. Had my last supper meal tonight...steak and lobster! My RNY is on June 9th (tentatively schedule as I wait for final approval BCBC FEP) and will start my modified (self imposed) liquid diet tomorrow (two liquid meals with one light meal) and official pre-op full liquid diet on June 1st. Feeling excited and fearful simultaneously. I'm fearful of possible complications and excited that I have an opportunity to save my life! Praying a lot; however, I know that this is God's will and that He has led me down this path.
