  1. Question??? How did you transition from mostly using shakes to getting your protein from food sources? I started really tracking what I am eating due to my 3 week stall. I'm noticing that due to my milk allergy that most of the shakes and yogurts I eat are a bit higher in carbs and calories than I would like and noticed I am more reliant on the shakes than food to get my protein in. How hard was the transition? Should I gradually start eliminating the shakes? Thanks for any info you could share.

    Bowel Movement after Sleeve

After wls, it took 10 days till i pooped. After plastics is took 13 (a record which in recently tied during and just a little after going on vacay) Pooping regularly is a lot different for me post wls. Before i used to go 2-3 A DAY, post its more like once EVERY 2-3 days. During weight loss phase, i took Benifibre every day with my morning protein shake nowadays (3.5+ years post), i just go with it sans the fibre. But generally if i haven’t gone after 4 days (unless im on vacay), then i’ll take a dose or Miralax; and if that doesn’t work in a day or two, its time for a glycerine suppository. I almost always go after the first suppository. Twice, though it took 2 days of suppositories before i got to see any poop. In any case, from what ive read constipation is just an reality after wls we need to learn how to deal with in our own ways. Good Luck! ❤️

    I can’t drink enough liquids

The first 2 weeks I hit my protein goals because I bought the protein shakes and flavored protein water. But I could only get about 48oz of fluids. And it took all day and into the evening before I could even do that. Around week 3 I was able to hit the right amount of fluids, and now, and almost 9 weeks out, I drink way over the required amount. Your stomach is still healing, so if you can't hit the goal within the first couple of weeks, don't be hard on yourself. Just do your best. You'll get there.

TMI, maybe, but Is anyone having any trouble with diarrhea? I took miralax on day 3 and I went to the bathroom probably 5 or 6 times yesterday (day 4) and at day 5 I’ve already went several times. Definitely feeling a bit light headed as I met my protein goal yesterday but only 40 ounces of water…

    Genepro - 3rd generation?

Any update on this since last years last post ? I was looking to get this to add to some of my pureed foods to get my protein in. I suck at getting my liquid proteins in. Id like to add this to my scrambled eggs and some others .

    Food Before and After Photos

My work meals the last couple of days- I did end up swapping out the tuna and had the carrots for a protein bar and on the one with a smoothie I added pretzels and a protein bar. The sandwich bags have cranberry pecan granola and roasted chick peas in them. The little white lidded container is garden vegetable cream cheese.

So for my surgeon, we are on clear liquids for the first 9 days post op-followed by two weeks of full liquid. Calories the first week are slim to none. I was lucky if I got in 200-300 calories a day. He encourage walking often, but actually going out to walk for the purpose of exercise isn’t encouraged beyond 15-with p minutes a day. Today started my first day of full liquids, so I’m at 300 calories and 60 grams of protein currently. I’ll probably do some type of soup for dinner, so I won’t get much more protein.

    Potatoes?

I only ate what is pictured on the plate. I had one rib. I can only eat about 2 ounces of protein per meal. There is no way I could eat half a rack of ribs, lol!
  13. Can you get some protein shakes shipped to your hotel via Amazon or something?

I've never heard of being limited in walking post-op. Everything I've heard is walk as much as possible. Consistently amazed at the different advice. Are you feeling pretty good, though? Recovering well and getting in your water and protein?

Eating too much? 3 - 4 weeks Post op

Always consult with your surgeon and dietician. My plan does not have any mention of calories in the soft food stage which I'm guessing you're in. Just making sure I get the protein and the water, avoiding foods that are still problematic and learning how to properly read my body including not eating to the point of feeling full. If I were doing all that and consuming 800 calories a day (especially being the 400 pound male I am), I think they'd be thrilled!

    Any July buddies?

It's not hard if you don't think it is. Mind over matter. I sit down at the table, have a cup of broth, then I wait a little while, then go back to the table and sip my protein shake. Makes it feel like a meal.

Eating too much? 3 - 4 weeks Post op

*** I had Bypass, so it may be different*** At 1 month post op, my plan was to eat 400-600 calories a day. Then the next phase it increased to 500-800 calories. Once I was eating "normal" foods again I stay at 800-1000 until I hit maintenance. I am just over 3 months post op and on normal foods and a normal balanced diet and eat about 600-800 calories a day. I was worried I was not eating enough but my Dietician reviewed my food diaries and said I am doing perfect, not to worry about not hitting the calories as long as I am meeting my protein and fluids goals. From what you listed I do not think it is too much food as long as you are comfortable and not over eating or feeling stuffed. They are all low fat healthy proteins! Good job!

    Plus sized spray tan???

Update. I still don’t want to splurge on the professional spray tan and have tried the Jergens build a tan a couple times but didn’t get enough color (I used the fair to medium because I have fair skin). I finally bought the instant Version by Jergens in LIGHT bronze from Amazon (they carry it in Walmart just not mine apparently) and so far I love it. I was able to do it all myself but my back and my hubby did that part for me. It dries pretty quick and this morning I woke up to a light glow. It says if you want more color to do it again the next day which I may try just to see but I think the darker you get the more you will be able to see the darker patches that are inevitable with fake tan. I have a pool party to go to next Saturday and I am hoping to perfect this by then. The one thing I regret I didn’t do was to apply lotion to my dry spots beforehand because they didn’t get dark with the build a tan so I thought I was good but my knees and ankles did get a bit blotchy. Hubby uses fake tan and says to just rub off with a wash cloth in shower and do a light second coat allover so I will try that tonight. Anyways for those afraid of being too dark or Orange this light bronze should be good option for you too.
  19. I’m 3 weeks (almost 4) post op and feel like I’m actually eating too much…. I can almost eat 2 eggs in the morning Throughout the day I am eating about 600-800 calories ….. EXAMPLE: Yesterdays eating... Breakfast: 1 1/2 eggs scrambled with a VERY small drop of sugar free ketchup to keep moist Snack : Atkins coffee protein shake. Lunch : 4 oz of cream of cheddar/broccoli Snack : Oikos PRO Dinner : Tuna with light mayo pureed, and a fat free sugar free string cheese Snack: Oikos PRO Is this too much? I went from barely getting protein shakes down to this....
  20. I Am Enough!

    August Surgery Buddies!

I was originally considering the sleeve, but my surgeon was concerned about the reflux so we opted for the bypass. I'm so sorry to hear you have to go in for a revision, but I sure hope it brings you some relief. I have a standard two week liquid pre-op diet, nothing special. But I'm modifying my Keto Chow protein to use almond milk instead of heavy cream during that time. Last night I made fluff for the very first time using the SF jello and greek yogurt - it was very good. So experimenting with recipes to see what I like/don't like cause I know I might too tired or need a family member to help

Chips and salsa and bad eating day

I am over a year out and in maintenance. I still choose to have a shake for breakfast daily 160, one of a handful of lunches that I know are around 300 calories, a choice of dinners under 500 and a couple of snack options right around 100 calories each. I have never eaten a ton of variety because I am pretty picky so this works for me. Someone with a lot of variety this totally wouldn’t work for. I can keep a pretty rough idea in my head. I basically just know if I ate to plan yes or no for my meals and how many snacks I have had and then I know if I’m on track for the day or not. (I know how many I can have after working it out actually logging for quite a while though). Some days my dinner may be less calories but other days I am super hungry and I have an extra snack so it balances out. Basically I semi log my food at this point but I do it in my head counting by 100’s. But I agree it is very good to do it in the beginning and do it for a good while because we first need to figure out where our calories need to be to lose and to maintain but also because there are foods that we just really don’t know how many calories are hidden in them. For me a big one was baby back ribs. Odd I know. I guess I just assumed it’s a meat. It’s innocent. It’s not a desert or a dreaded carb, right? And I knew the sauce was bad but the meat itself doesn’t have sugar so when I found a descent sugar free BBQ sauce I thought I had this meal all figured out. Well, did you know a HALF rack of baby back ribs has 668 calories WITHOUT sauce and 45 grams of fat!! That’s only about 4 oz of meat so a comparable chicken breast is only 190 calories sans the sauce. I am in my 40’s and I just learned this about ribs. I had never logged them because I don’t eat them often enough but I had a couple ribs on Father’s Day and I’ve been craving them ever since so I researched them a little. Guess I may just have to wait till next time i can have a couple off someone else’s plate, lol Anyways, my point is logging foods helps you to learn what is in most foods so you know if they are totally safe (green light), sorta pushing it (yellow light) or a total splurge (red light that you can run on occasion if you are in maintenance and have budgeted for it). Logging also helps you to learn little tricks you can live with for your favorite meals like the sugar free sauce, veggie substitutions, lower carb bread options, etc to make them a little better for you. Once you learn these things about most foods you will encounter day to day, a more “intuitive version of eating” seems more doable in my opinion. For me the ribs are a definite non runnable red light as I have gained 3 pounds above my happy weight I am not allowing myself ANY red light or yellow light foods until I drop these three pounds (I have also cut back on my snacks for the time being to make it go a bit faster). At almost 16 months out now this is the first time I have gained past my happy weight so I am making this up as I go but so far I have lost a pound and a half with this plan so it seems to be working for me. A lot of people like to use apps like my fitness pal for logging. Like anything else It takes a while to get it set up but once you do they say it’s goes pretty quick. I did it the old fashioned way which allowed me to keep a page of frequent meals so I could quickly add those. It’s just whatever works for you. Some people on here say they take a day off each week from logging or they only log on weekdays, etc. just commit to what you can because anything is better than not logging at all.
  22. Be sure you are getting your protein and taking your vitamins. I take biotin and extra zinc along with my multivitamin with iron. It helps if you get vitamins that are specific to bariatric patients since they are formulated better for us. I order Barimelts and they are chewable so easier to take. I’ve been taking my vitamins religiously every day and even though I’ve still had some hair loss it hasn’t been too bad. Just know that the hair loss will slow once your body adjusts after surgery. Hang in there! 💕
  23. I took hair vitamins and collagen support supplements well before surgery to try to prevent hair loss and meticulously hit my protein and water goals, but HELLO it happened anyway. Perhaps not as badly if I wasn't supplement-strict, but I'll never know because I don't have a clone of me who isn't taking them to compare! I already have fine hair, and it started coming out around month 4. Joy! But it stops. And I got my hair cut into a short pixie and am loving it. It hasn't grown back yet, but it will at some point, but until then the pixie cut rules.
  24. I am in Spain at the moment and am having a difficult time finding foods to eat in the hotel restaurant. The eggs are so hard boiled or over cooked scrambled that I cant digest them. The soup is shocking and has no body. The meat is so tough, I am living off milk and yogurt and am really weak at the moment. I hope you are going to a better hotel than this. Take some foods or protein supplements with you just in case. I never realised it would be so difficult for me

    Tracy's Journey

Congrats on your weight loss. That’s fantastic. I’m a real food person too. I didn’t touch another shake or protein supplement powder from the start of purées in week three. I got all my protein & nutrients from the real food I made which was always my intention - to start establishing my new eating habits, food preferences, etc. & develop a sustainable way of eating from as early on as I could. We can not live on supplements & shakes alone. It worked as by month 8 I was totally off my multivitamins & I continued to lose. Just watched my portions, met my protein goal & ensured I included a variety of vegetables, whole/multi grains, dairy & fruit in my diet. Still do. I snack on yoghurt, nuts, multi grain crackers, hummus, protein bar (my exception as I developed a protein malabsorption issue post gall removal & the bar helps me ensure I meet my now higher protein goal), fruit, peanut paste. I have a couple of purchased snacks in my cupboard which I eat occasionally (baked chick peas/fava beans, freeze dried mango, nut clusters) like once a month when I stay with my mum or if travelling. You’ll find what works best for you & if that’s including shakes or protein powders in your diet that’s fine.
