4 days post op and I've advanced my diet
CrowMilk replied to CakesItUp's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Actually, as a registered nurse, I would say that the point of going through the phases of diet post-operatively is to allow the suture line to heal, and to allow the new structure of the stomach to slowly accommodate to the new functioning through gradual adaptation. Which is why the physicians give the diet progression instructions the way they do. Please see my post on the subject (link in my signature, "I'm not a doctor but..."). Once your surgeon has cleared you for a full diet, I agree that we all need to learn to eat more intuitively. But during the healing phases, it's more important to adhere to your surgeon's instructions to avoid infections, leaks, and other complications that can lead to more surgery, hospitalizations, and death. Yes, that is what I just said. The "new" foods in this scenario is starting with the Clear Liquids, making sure your new stomach can handle that, then moving on through each phase in the healing process. When I talk about "listening to your body" I am not strictly talking about trying new foods, I am meaning with all things. If you are on full liquids but the broth you are eating makes you nauseous, listen to your body and don't eat that. That's what I am saying. -
DS-ers! Question about food intake!
rargirl replied to KWeilbrenner09's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
I am almost 6 months post op. My initial pouch was 4 oz. I was a little bit of a different case because I had a leak complication with my surgery which prevented me from being able to eat or drink at all for the first 5 weeks. At 5 weeks, when the leak was healed, I could eat one hard boiled egg. Today, I could probably eat two hard boiled eggs and two pieces of bacon. When I eat out with my friends/family, I tend to eat 1/2 to 1/3 of the portion I am served. I eat kind of like those teeny tiny skinny ladies who seem to barely eat... and you always wonder if they feel constantly starved...only it is not miserable. You feel just fine/full. At first, be prepared for waiters to ask you if "everything is ok" and you like your food (because you ate so little of it). -

A woman that was in the doctors office with me had already had her surgery date and she wanted the bypass and my surgeon said that he wouldn't recommend it for so many reasons. She told him that she really wanted it and that if he didn't do it then she would find another surgeon. He told her to do her homework and bring him some info of all the reasons why she felt that it was the right one for her and he would do it. She did just that and he did the surgery and I saw her again for my post op visit and she said that it was the worst thing she could have ever done. I just think it's a more invasive surgery which has more risk of complications. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Thinking About Gastric Sleeve Surgery
MarcyDarcy replied to MelissaRose24's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved 2 weeks ago, and I'm recovering well. I think you just have to get through that first week of being sore post op, but it's totally worth it! Everyone is so different though, so you may have complications or you may not, there are no guarantees. I haven't been nauseous or had Gerd and I'm eating about 4 ounces per meal (puree/liquid). Each day has been different, some days I'm not hungry at all and others I still have "head hunger" and crave a taco. I haven't had any regrets so far. HW: 268 SW: 214 CW: 200. Alberta girl question: Why go to Mexico?
TracyBar replied to Meltzy's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi dawnpop - I'm waiting to hear about my surgeon appt. (Calgary). I've been going through the process since about Sept. I find after all, that the time is much needed, especially for me. I'm still on the fence. Perhaps an interview with the surgeon will make me decide what to do, one way or another. If you get a referral from your doctor and you meet the BMI requirement, you can go through provincial healthcare. Honestly, the wait isn't even as long as it is for knee replacement, etc. Early October 2016 was my first appt. I may see a surgeon in February and surgery could be 6-8 months away. I have no pre-existing/co-morbidities so it could possibly take longer if they need to push other patients up with poor health. So if it does turn out to be 8 months from Feb then it takes me to a 1 year wait from 1st appt. or thereabouts. If you're 100% positive this surgery is for you, and you've done a TON of research, then self-pay may be the way to go for you. That was my initial route. As for places in Mexico - there is a Canadian affiliated clinic there - it used to be WLF (Weight Loss Forever), but I believe they've changed their name. You can google WLF and it should go to the new website. My quoted cost was $13,500, which is the same price as I was quoted from the doctor in Montreal that does it via self-pay. My research turned up nothing in Alberta for self-pay options - other than SmartShape and I think it was considerably more $ and they don't seem to do many VSG surgeries. The Bariatric Clinic, at least in Calgary, no longer performs Lapband surgery as there are too many complications. -
Complications from advancing diet too soon
sasharbinx replied to Frenchie1977's topic in Rants & Raves
I'm sorry for your loss. I have big time guilt and your concern or expression of annoyance speaks to me if it's worth anything. I'm for sure going to fess up to my doctor on my follow up about my half slice of cheese at day 5. I don't think it's ok for me to cheat anymore just cause I chewed really good and seem to have digested it fine and I don't condone anyone else do the same. I was just posting honestly because this has been very difficult! But no it's not worth dying from complications. And well what's done is done, at least your cautionary tale is a driving factor in my will not to stray again and in fact you may have saved my life in doing so. So I just read yet another post about someone advancing their diet on their own too soon. This one from someone 4 days post op advancing to broccoli soup. Probably won't kill them but it could. Then of course we get the irresponsible follow up poster saying that they too advanced their diet on their own way early and explored all kinds of foods and as long as their stomach tolerates it they see no problem with it. Now I'm getting super frustrated, I had to put my two cents in. And perhaps I was harsh. But I watched someone die 4 years ago from doing just this. My x mother in law had gastric sleeve surgery. At less than two weeks post op she started eating tidbits of foods she was not supposed to have, turkey, stuffing, ham, chicken in very small bites and yes chewed very well. All that didn't matter. She was fine at first. In fact showed no symptoms for days. Then she became extremely ill, with pain and fever. She had a leak which had to be repaired by surgery. After surgery she developed a serious infection and a fistula which led to the outside of her stomach. Everything she tried to drink seeped outside her stomach onto a large padded napkin that she held up to the opening of that fistula. They could not get the infection under control. They fought it for three months with the best antibiotics they had. Eventually she became septic, her organs began to fail and she passed away. I am only 4 weeks post op VSG, you better believe I thought long and hard about having the same surgery that she had. But I can also say that I have followed my an to the T, with the exception of drinking coffee which I discussed with my surgeon beforehand. When are people going to realize that following their diet is serious. And more so when are these idiots going to stop coming on and saying things like it's ok to explore foods early as long as you tolerate them!!!! My mother in law tolerated those foods just fine for damn near a week before she finally showed the signs of a serious leak. Your prescribed diet plan after major stomach surgery is not just a guideline that they want you to follow so you can lose weight. It's a prescription that really can mean life or death, I've seen it with my own eyes. Ugggggh sooooooo frustrated!!!!!!!

Sorry, I think this is pretty bad "advice." It's like telling someone it's okay to walk in front of a moving train because you did it and didn't get hit. Just because you didn't have a discernible problem, doesn't mean the rules aren't there for very good reason - to keep people from having serious complications. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App That is why I specifically said to ask your surgeon first. Mine was okay with me exploring different foods beforehand, so that is why I don't see a problem with it, especially if it's still within the realm of what you can actually eat after WLS. Frenchie1977 replied to CakesItUp's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Exploring foods off your plan is very dangerous. Advancing your diet before your plan allows it can cause serious complications and even death. My mother in law explored foods early in her plan when she was not supposed to. She initially felt fine. For days even she was fine. Then she developed a serious leak. She had to have surgery to fix it. After surgery she developed a serious infection and a fistula that lead outside her stomach, she could not eat or drink anything without it coming out the front of her stomach. They could not contain the infection, they fought it for three months. Eventually she became septic, her organs shut down and she passed away. All because she could not adhere to her prescribed diet plan. The diet plan is given to you for your safety, it's not a suggestion, it's a prescription. I thought long and hard about having the same surgery as she had but you better believe that I have followed my plan with the exception of drinking some coffee early which my surgeon said was fine. Please think twice before advancing your diet on your own. And for the poster that said I see no problem exploring foods early as long as you tolerate them. Educate yourself on post op complications surrounding not following your prescribed diet and then show a little responsibility about what you post. New people may read what you say and think it's ok, when it totally is not. I've seen with my own eyes what can happen. Just because you got lucky and were ok does not make it responsible to advocate that others play so dangerously with their lives. -
I had my very first consult with my surgeon last week. I LOVED HIM! He probably spent an hour or better just chatting with me about the surgery, benefits, complications, expectations, etc. It was a wonderful visit! That being said.... there is SO MUCH MORE paperwork and red tape and hoops to jump through than I ever imagined. I am a nurse so I have an insight to how insurance rules the world, but I had no idea!! For example, my insurance requires me to show proof of being followed by my family doctor for 6 months for weight loss.... Ok, no problem, we've got that. The catch is, it has to be 6 consecutive months, which I don't have, because my doc would see me and then say check back in with me in 6-8 weeks.... UGH! So, not knowing then what I know now, I have to start back at square 1 with the family doc for 6 months before we can set up surgery.......................... I just keep telling myself it's going to be worth it but DANG INSURANCE COMPANIES!!!!

I Definitely Regret Surgery.... So Far!
Salmon.Fish replied to jasleeve's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I know this post is old, and I'm very glad everything is ok. Congratulations on the baby/toddler, now! I hope my question doesn't come off rude or harsh, and please correct me if I'm way off base. Isn't it possible that the OP abused her sleeve by alternating Water and food, nearly chugging water, fried cheese, concession stand corn chip and artificial cheese food? The statement is that the surgery was almost a regret, but why wasn't the behavior regretted? Is it usually ok to have slip ups or be caught in a jam and not be able to eat the perfect diet and have nothing go wrong? Or is the sleeve really very sensitive and slip ups equal complications? I just know I'm going to feel the need to drink lots of water at some point, but I'm nervous now that I risk causing a leak. I'm sort of worried I won't have the willpower to not do things I shouldn't. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App -

I am on Day 9 or 10 of my pre-op diet & IM GAINING WEIGHT! Why on this green earth would I be gaining weight?! My Fluid intake is phenomenal, I'm hitting every last calorie and macronutrient goal you can think of, yet, I'm gaining. I'm friggin gaining! I tried implementing exercise, I've tried not exercising and just focusing on the diet. Just why! This is so incredibly discouraging because I'm literally over here STARVING from the lack of calories and gaining, when I can easily eat whatever I want and gain! I'm following the plan to a T just so I don't have any complications post surgery. But I'm starting to lose hope. I keep telling myself to stay off the scale, but how else will I know what's working?! Just. Someone. Anyone. Please tell me what could possibly be happening or how I can fix this!! I'm trying everything I can to NOT cheat, but things like this is what's pushing me closer to the edge. *Also, I'm aware of Water retention, etc. But I lost 7 lbs the first week. Now, it's steadily going back up. It started going up by .4, then a pound, now a few pounds. * Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Hi, I am going under the knife on Jan 30. Quite nervous about the slice and dice option. No going back from there. Had a band put in in 2007. Lost around 50kg but have put it back on. It was the hitting of my starting weight that triggered the decision. Plus all the things slim people didn't experience such as difficulty going to the toilet, breaking chairs, having no one sit beside you on the train, not fitting into plane seats, sweating, etc. Had a revision about 10 years ago which was open surgery, which has come around to bite me on the bum. When the surgeon goes in to remove the band, he might not be able to do the SAGB due to scar tissue. He won't know until he goes in. I am grateful for the band because it took me nearly 20 years to get back up to where I am now, even though it was often through bulimic behaviour. Me and my 3 siblings all had bands done about the same time. One sister is the only success story, with our brother dying last year through weight complications. He expected miracles from the band without the personal effort involved. I fell into the same trap but did not revert to the easy-eat stuff based on ice cream and milk which he did. Instead I pushed my body to the point where my pouch and oesaphagus are stretched. I can eat a normal meal and not feel it. Fears? Post op discipline. If I had the courage and self discipline to say no to myself in this area of my life, I would not be at this point. So the big unknown is will I F it up with my wrong-headedness. A personal challenge we all face. (Not helped by almost pathologically hating Many of the 'good foods' ????

sonkat5355 replied to debmersmom5's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Cigna contracted by Miami Dade school board will not pay at all not even the hospital stay. We have no other insurance choice. I will be paying $15 k for this surgery. Plus I needed an endoscopy which cost $750. Plus they are going (Cigna) to charge me another 30% adding $850. So $1600 added to the 15 k. I pray I have no complications because the insurance is being so tough. My internist/cardiologist wanted to make it medically necessary but Cigna told me they won't pay out. Only good side is I don't have to wait 6 months for approvals. Saw the psychiatrist, nutritionist, XRAY, blood work and I am in my drs office as I text waiting for approval and some heart tests. Thinking About Gastric Sleeve Surgery
JamieLogical replied to MelissaRose24's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@MelissaRose24 Definitely read up as much as you can about the procedure, the pre and post-op food stages, the potential complications and everything else. One thing that maybe hasn't been stressed enough yet in this thread is that the RATE of weight loss doesn't matter. We are so used to the "diet" mentality of setting and reaching a goal so we can be "done" with it. You will never ever be "done" with your sleeve. It is for life. So if it takes you 6 months or 16 months to lose the weight, it won't matter in the long term. I am over two years post-op now. I live my life at my goal weight every single day now. It took me almost exactly one year to reach goal. Some reach it sooner, some reach it later. But once you are there, it doesn't matter how long it took, because you are there and you can STAY there with the help of your sleeve. -
Shouldn't I feel more sick?

What she said. I had two very brief waves of nausea while still in the hospital, and nothing since. I had almost no pain. Count yourself among those blessed with a good constitution and no complications. And stick to your plan, even when you don't feel any pain. It really will work. -
Thinking About Gastric Sleeve Surgery
Middus replied to MelissaRose24's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think we have to be wary of exceptions. If you are planning to get pregnant again, leave about a year after surgery just in case. No one plans for hernias or some complications that may arise as a result of surgery. In addition, when Pregnant, you are eating for two; many people can't even get enough essential nutrients for themselves in the initial 2-3 months after surgeries like Bypass and sleeve, so you can imagine how risky it might be for a developing foetus. In life, there are always exceptions, but better safe than sorry. -

DisneyMom2El replied to MelissaRose24's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's funny, I hear all sorts of things about do's and don'ts after surgery that sound so severe, but every one of them, my surgeon has dismissed. He asked if I planned to have more kids, and I said yes, but I know I need to wait 18 months. He shrugged his shoulders and told me you can't always control life, and if I get pregnant before that, everything will be safe and fine (I'm still not planning on it, but it's nice to know). He told me that he had one woman come in for her 6 week checkup pregnant, she found out at the appointment, and she had twins! He said that was ten years ago, the pregnancy was normal, babies delivered healthy, and she's still doing well after ten years with no complications. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
