Personal Goal vs. Surgeon's Goal/8 month update.
FabBy50 replied to ash's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Ash I know how you feel when it comes to setting a goal. I set mine at 150, then after I had my revision done I changed it to 140. With all that said now that I'm almost to 150 I think 140 will be too little. Give yourself some time and you will know when it is right to stop. Good luck and happy losing! -
Hi fellow sleevers! I haven't been here for almost 1 year, the fact that I got sooo very frustrated that I only lost 35 lbs within a full year!!! I did all the right things that I was supposed to do. I work for 11 hours and on my feet for most part, I try to eat healthy and exercise as well BUT to no avail! On my 3rd month post op, I even did a swallow test to make sure that everything inside is ok and it was. They didn't see anything wrong. My surgeon mentioned about having a revision done after few more test. I'm not sure at this moment, there are days that I want it redone and some days that I don't! I DON'T KNOW YET! I always ask myself should I or shouldn't I? I'm currently 177 lbs right now, sometimes I'm down to 174 lbs on a good day. So, is there anybody out here with the same issue that I'm facing right now? I don't know is it worth to having it redone? Would you get it redone? I am sooo worried, irrirtated and FRUSTRATED!!!!!

sleeve to rny for weight loss?
biginjapan replied to coffeewomanakra's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had to pay for my sleeve out of pocket (went to Mexico) and now after gaining back 50 pounds in 2.5 years (!) I'm going to get a revision to gastric bypass in early March. For me, I think I had two reasons why I failed - first, I was distrustful of what my surgeon did. I came out of surgery feeling great (unlike everyone else on my floor) and had no problem eating or tolerating different foods when I got to those stages. One of the doctors told me that I had a really long stomach (!) and I wonder if that has allowed me to eat slightly larger portions as a result. I did well in the first 8 months after surgery, I was 100% dedicated to portion control and watched my macros, but I fell off the wagon at my dad's birthday (cake) and slowly but surely over time I was able to consume more, and eat more things I shouldn't have, over time. I knew going into the surgery that I had some food addictions, and unfortunately the last couple of years has taught me that these will be problems for me the rest of my life. There will be no "just once in a while" type of situations - sugar is a huge problem for me, and this next time around I know it will be gone for good - I'm not willing to fail after a second surgery (again, that I will have to pay out of pocket). I don't think anyone can know if your insurance will pay for a second surgery (only your insurance can tell you that), but if not, then I would look at cheaper options for self-pay. -
There are so many points of view on this topic written by physicians. The best thing you can do is not freak out but follow the plan. Stay away from carbonation and eating and drinking together as well as overeating. In the beginning it is difficult to overeat because your body will simply cause you to vomit, in the future you are more apt to push yourself further because something tastes good. We all do it once in a while but it is not good and if you do it all the time for every meal it can become a big problem. Many times people who have had revision from bypass to bypass again it's because they did not follow the plan, learned to eat around or overeat consistently. They did not follow the rules thereby causing them to gain their weight back, they will blame it on a stretched pouch but that likely is not the reason for the revision. To eat around you have to be grazing....eating small quantities all day. I have done it once or twice and boy do I regret it when I do. It's usually a holiday and I immediately get back on the plan.

Band to Sleeve Surgery tomorrow 11-9-09
Tiffykins replied to AKBarnes1's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I'll definitely keep you in my thoughts for tomorrow. I can only imagine how conflicted you are feeling right now. My concern with having 2 surgeries instead of revising directly to the sleeve is that I would of gained more weight back in between the surgeries, and that would of been more to lose. I would be hesitant getting a bigger sleeve, at least big as some patients have like a 48fr boughie. I've read horror stories that their weight loss completely stopped after 4-5 months and hunger returned much quicker. I wish you the very best tomorrow. Please keep us posted, and know we're all here for you. -
sleeve to rny for weight loss?
catwoman7 replied to coffeewomanakra's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
depends on the insurance. Most will not pay for a revision unless it's medically necessary (e.g., severe GERD, mechanical failure of the original surgery) - although even then some companies will only pay for one surgery per lifetime. You can always call them and ask, though - you never know. if your sleeve is still working, though, you can still lose the weight. You just have to go back to the way you were eating that first year (not necessarily all the way back to protein shakes, but the whole protein first, then non-starchy vegetable thing. Tracking your food. Weighing/measuring things instead of eyeballing portion size. Etc. It usually takes longer the second time around, but people have done it... -
Help! I Need Advice, Guys! I'm Nervous!
Sdothue posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi! I had a Lap to RNY conversion on Wednesday. The surgery was scheduled for Tuesday, but the anesthesiologist pumped me up with too much gas & they had to try to do the surgery the following day. I was an add on patient for Wednesday. The procedure was supposed to be strictly a laparoscopic surgery. I noticed when I came home that I have 10 lap sites & 1 open incision on my left side. The site is puckered in VERY deep & looks like a huge/wide/ scary roll with sores inside of it. The "sinkhole" is completely disproportionate to my body. I didn't know if this was normal. It's extremely painful & I am so upset. I'm not trying to complain. I am completely grateful that i was given the opportunity for a revision... I just don't know, if this will look like this forever... Or if it should be this painful... Has anyone else went through this? I don't know if this matters, but I started out at 285. Thanks, guys! -
Mixed Feelings Surgery Aug 23
PEvette replied to mschina415's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had my band for 7 years and was able to revise to at sleeve last month....did your band erode into your stomach?? What caused you to desire revision surgery?? I desired mines to be removed because I wasn't losing any weight with it....had it for 7 years and lost 40 pounds to gain it back again...then my weight started to creep up.... I honestly never heard of any film....I know my doc said I had lots of scar tissue because my band was so old....my procedure took 2 hrs, instead of the 45 min a typical sleeve procedure take... If you dont understand or dont feel comfortable with him get a second opinion BEFORE having the procedure done... -

Goodbye Ole Friend- My Goodbye Letter to My Band
galmila replied to Dallas Curvy Girl's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I understand completely. I have a revision on May 23. I really thought I was alone and didn't talk about my problems with the band to anyone. My kids know when I cant eat and I often have to leave the table and I have done it for so long that I am so looking forward to the sleeve. I know I have to get this thing out one way or the other. -
What made you choose the sleeve?
Tiffykins replied to firephotographer's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is my standard reply when this question pops up every couple of days. I won't try to sway anyone one way or another, but I'll give you my reasons for choosing VSG over RNY for my revision from the band. You can also check out the revision, failure, and food issue forums on here to get an idea of some long term RNY patients. For me, it was never an option. The cons outweighed the pros. The VSG was my 2nd, and final WLS. I could have easily had RNY, but I fought to have VSG as my revision from the band. Some factors I considered in deciding on VSG. The pouch that RNY offers is similar to the pouch with the band. Least to say, a pouch sucks, I love having a normal tummy, just less capacity and still fully functioning. 1) No blind stomach left behind that can be difficult to scope yet can still get ulcers and cancer. 2) 2 years max on calorie/carb/sugar malabsorption, but a lifetime of vitamin/nutrient malabsorption. This process is called adaptation, and it happens with intestinal bypass surgeries. 3) I had a pouch with the band, and it sucked. I'm pretty fond of my pyloric valve and the sleeve let me keep it. I love having a normal functioning stomach, just smaller in capacity. 4) Regain stats and #of RNY patients seeking revision truly scared the poop out of me 5) I have too many friends in real life that struggle with Vitamin deficiencies post-RNY, and most of them either never got to goal, or have gained back a significant amount of their weight. 6) The long term complications with RNY were too numerous for my comfort level. Pouch or stoma dilation, strictures, vitamin/nutrient deficiencies, ulcers, 7) I researched gastrectomies that had been performed for stomach cancer and ulcer patients, and found comfort in the long term results and minimal complications of patients that had lost most or all of their stomachs had dealt with over several years. 8) I was a volume eater, and knew a restrictive only procedure would work for me. That was my thought process when I got the band, and I thought I could beat the odds on complications. Sadly, the band only lasted 8 months before I had to revise. 9) I did not want to have food or medication restrictions. I chose WLS to have a "normal" life, and I think it's normal to eat a couple of Cookies. With RNY, I wasn't willing to go through the possibility of dumping if I wanted to have a couple of cookies, or a slice of cake on occasion. The big scare for me is medication restrictions for life. NSAIDS and steroids are a NO GO for life with a RNY pouch. I realize that I may never be diagnosed with a condition or disease that requires steroid use, but it is possible. I want the best long term results with the least amount of complications. Malabsorption is not anything to play with in my mind, and I was not willing to take that risk. I lost all my weight in my ticker with the exception of 7lbs with the sleeve, and I did it in 10.5 months. The 115lbs fell off the first 6.5 months, and then the rest I lost as I was getting into maintenance over another 4 months.. It's been a fabulous journey, and I'm easily maintaining with zero issues for nearly a year at this point. I want to add that every WLS regardless of your choice will require discipline. Only a percentage of RNY patients dump on sugar/fat, pouches and stomas stretch, then you have the medication restrictions. I'm not trying to convince you, but these were my concerns when I knew I had to revise from the band. I started at 263 the day of my revision and today I weigh 127lbs. I bounce on the scale 125-130lbs any given week, and I couldn't be more ecstatic! Best wishes in your research! P.S. I wrote this before pregnancy, and think it's only fair to add that I'm thriving in my pregnancy. Zero deficiencies, zero nutritional issues for my body and the growing baby. I have gained about 10-11lbs in 20 weeks of pregnancy, and my doctors are elated with my progress. Nothing has been challenging in the pregnancy, nor is the pregnancy anymore complicated because of VSG. I struggle with the physical changes, and the weight regain, but it's a work in progress. -
I swear by CelebrateVitamins.com. Before my band was removed and revision done 5/20, I found a protein drink & multivitamin all in one! If I do that plus their drinkable multivitamin in the evening I get all the vites I'm supposed to get within the time frame my Dr. wants. My levels are great. Iron is my only prob...but this is a "prior to surgery" issue I'm working on. Check them out. I don't like the chewable a....textures bug me. :-)

Surgery scheduled tomorrow
TexasT replied to RedShoesinDallas's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had my breast augmentation revision done last Friday and am a bit sore today myself. The boobies look great, and now hopefully I can be done with surgeries for awhile now. Glad you're doing well post-op and adjusting to the liquid diet. This is the hardest part, when it's over it will be smooth sailing from here on out. When you get to mushies you'll think you're in heaven! Best of luck with your recovery - sounds like you're doing fantastic! -
Having Gastric Sleeve Surgery In June 2012

Thank you for the responses....I'm looking forward to my revision....excited and nervous at the same time! -
Yes, I did have my sleeve done on Sept. 15th and was revised from the Lap Band - so this is my second go round. Lucky, if I were in your shoes, I'd just have to sit down with my parents and tell them that the reason you let them know is because you are their daughter and felt they should know - however, it's your body and you are going to do what YOU feel is best for YOU. If they can't be supportive then to please keep their opinions to themselves. I know it's easier said than done, but for your own sanity it just might need to be done. I believe in time they will come around. Hugs!!

Surgery Date Moved Up To July 17
TaiDyed replied to Jeniluv1978's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Fingers crossed, I will be a band to sleeve revision on 8/6 - will know in the next 2 weeks if my insurance will cover the revision and will then begin the 2 week liquid diet pre surgery. I totally understand the feeling like I failed w/ the band. and the "what if"...what if the sleeve isn't any different for me? I'm terrified. But I am more terrified of not trying. Wishing you the best of luck and hoping to hear more about your journey. -

I am in Raleigh, NC and looking for someone local who had a band to sleeve revision that I can talk to. I want to learn about their experiences so I can make an educated decision on whether or not to get the revision. Thanks! -

I did the band out and revision the same day. I was more sore from the port removal than anything else. So the sleeve should be much easier than the band removal, at least I would think so. I had my band for almost 8 years, and I still have a nasty knot of scar tissue where my port was, my hubby calls it a phantom port. I'm hoping when I get my plastics done, they will remove the port scar, and the hard knot that is under it. Now that I'm at goal, it sticks out, and looks like a tumor.

8 days Post op And I WANT PEANUT BUTTER
biginjapan replied to BecomingAnna's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I was going to suggest PB2 as well, but I will say this too - cravings can drive anyone crazy, but giving into them now, so early in the game, will make it that much harder to resist later on. I say this as someone who just got out of a gastric bypass revision for a failed sleeve which failed mostly because I caved to my addictions (chocolate specifically) which lead to falling off the wagon entirely. -
Hi I'm Rebecca, 28 year old married female from NJ. I got the band this year but am having stuck/regurgitation issues and extremely slow weight loss. My Dr has ordered a barium swallow for Monday so we can talk about revision. I wouldn't be surprised if he made me wait a while which I am okay with but so could use some support on the journey. If you could be of assistance/ be a mentor/buddy I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!!!!

Well, I had my EGD today and it was all good news. I am able to get the band out and do the sleeve revision all in the same surgery!!! I meet with the Nut next week to start my 3 months and psych in May. I am praying for approval and surgery before the end of June! I'm going on a cruise in July and I would like to have it done prior to that. When I had the band put in, it was about a week of post-op recovery. Can anyone tell me how long the recovery is with the sleeve? Sent from my SM-T350 using the BariatricPal App

Advice please band to sleeve
VSGmary replied to socialbutterfli's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was revised band to sleeve in Oct 2014. Complications I've encountered personally: i have developed GERD, for the first 6 months i was lactose intolerant and could not eat any form of meat for the first 5 months. My gall bladder had to be removed 3 months after i was sleeved (this is quite normal due to losing a lot if weight in a short amount of time). My GERD is being controlled by taking one 20mg tablet of omeprazole a day. Thats about it! For me the revision has been 100% been worth it.
