  1. Hi - I've been reading here for a very long time, but this is my first post. I am in a desperate situation with my VSG and need some advice. Back story: I had a lap band placed in 2006 and was very sick with it for a long time. I met with my surgeon last September and we decided to revise to a VSG. I did the six month supervised diet and everything for insurance. Revision was scheduled for April 19, 2016; in the recovery room he tells me that he could not revise to VSG because I had far too much inflamed scar tissue and that we need to wait four months for it to calm down and revise then. OK. So - VSG scheduled for 8/15; all is well. Office called today and asked to move my surgery to tomorrow morning; I am slated to check into the hospital at 9am. The surgeon called me shortly after I agreed to tell me that there is only a fifty percent chance that he will be successful with the VSG procedure due my scar tissue. I told him to go for it anyway and that I trust him. I am 46. I was 257 at my highest and am now at 190; my goal is 130. I have lost and gained HUNDREDS of pounds over and over and over for the entirety of my adult life and was hopeful the sleeve would help me end this cycle and maintain a sensible weight. So - do I go forward with the surgery tomorrow and hope I'm in the positive fifty percent and that it is successful? Do I give it up and try once again to forge out a thinner life on my own? I'm very stressed and need advice. Thanks!
  2. I am in the process of having the band to Sleeve revision surgery. It was discovered during my EGD the end of May that my band had slipped, and it is now medically necessary to remove it. My surgeon's rule is that if it is deemed medically necessary to remove the band, he only requires you to lose 6 pounds from your initial weight at your first visit with him. Well between my first visit with him, and my EGD, I gained 11 pounds from taking an anti inflammatory medication for my back. So that put me up to having to lose 17 pounds. Grr!!! So I immediately topped taking the medication that was causing me to gain weight, and started the low carb diet that my doctor put me on. From the end of May until July 7th, I lost a grand total of 4 pounds. So frustrating!!! Since then, I have restricted my carbs even more, watched my caloric intake, sodium intake, fat intake, and have been switching out one meal a day for a protein shake. Today I go for another weigh in, and to see the nutritionist, and I just know that I'm only going to have about a 3 pound loss, and I just don't understand why. I have been to my regular doctor and have had my thyroid checked, and all blood work done to see if there are any underlying issues, and there aren't any. I also spoke with my insurance company this morning, and my surgery has been approved! Yay!!! But.... there's a time limit on this approval, and it runs out October 17th. So I am hoping and PRAYING that my surgeon will bend his rule, and let me slide on the remaining 10 pounds..... 🙁🙁 Sent from my SM-N920V using BariatricPal mobile app

High Blood Pressure & Diabetes after WLS

Thanks for the replies. I do have about 20 - 30 more lbs I would like to lose. I was at my goal but got to goal in a bad way. I lost my last 30 lbs by vomiting constantly. I needed a surgery on my esophagus to remove excess scar tissue from the band that was on my esophagus. My first surgeon placed my band ON my esophagus and after almost 9 years, I'm still paying for that! It was discovered when my band was removed and my revision was done. Any who, I couldn't keep anything down. Since my surgery to fix my esophagus, I've been able to eat and I've gained about 20 lbs. The surgeon that did my esophagus surgery told me that I was very malnourished and that I would probably gain weight after the surgery and would hopefully lose it later. Well, I'm still fighting with that! I'm sure you're right in that I am better off than if I had all that extra weight and I need to look at the bright side. I am already on 2 medications for the high blood pressure, but not yet on anything for the diabetes. My doc is having me watch my blood sugars. I'm sure the next time I see her she will put me on something because my sugars have been running higher. I'm just bummed out about it! I'm on meds for thyroid, high blood pressure and now diabetes? I will rattle when I walk!!

    Itching??

The itching is just caused by healing  I'm having the same problem now on my port incision, five days after revision surgery. I had the same problem with my tattoo a week or so after I got it!
  5. I am wondering if anyone has the band over bypass. I am scheduled to have this revision procedure in 2 weeks and would love to hear how it has been for you. Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  6. I have blue cross blue shield AL and I am W-A-I-T-I-N-G not so patiently for a phone call!!! I hope I get approved but mine is a revision, getting rid of the lap band and doing the gastric bypass, Atnea covered my lap band without any problems just had to do a 6month program and some tests ect...
  7. I would either reschedule or try the pill route if that would work. Having just been through revision surgery this week it is very fresh in my mind and I would not want to deal with that situation myself on top of everything else!
  8. I had my surgery on 12/21/2015 and also had my gallstones and gallbladder at VSG survey. I was also a revision from lapband though not at the same time as surgery. I have tracked my progress against others on the site, and I think having the two major ops together, it might take a little while longer for recovery. I am at 5.5 weeks post surgery and although it has been a struggle to get my fitness back I am getting there, and I would definitely not have wanted two surgeries.
  9. I agree with DLCoggin BUT I wouldn't tell everyone and anyone before surgery because 9/10 will be negative about it and will try to discourage you. I love how the thin ones want to tell me I can do it on my own and that all I have to do is watch what I eat and exercise! IF it were that easy there wouldn't be an obese person out there and this option wouldn't exist. I'm having revision surgery due to a failed lap band but only a hand full of people know and until I'm losing the weight and I am asked-I will not put it out there. I'll avoid the negativity as much as possible. (my two cents )
  10. Anyone going to be going to Mexicali Bariatric with Dr. Aceves between 1/21/2014 - 1/27/2014? I'm going for a band to sleeve revision. Flying in to San Diego from Vancouver Canada on the 21st, surgery on the 22nd, three nights in the hospital, and then opting for an additional two nights at the hotel. So excited!!! :-) Tim

    New and Quite Shocked!

Welcome.. I am scheduled to have the sleeve on Oct 19. Can't wait..You will find a lot of support here. Many have had the revision from the Band to the sleeve with great success..Good luck to you.. Connie
  13. Welcome, I am glad your doctor suggested the sleeve. We have a lot of band to sleeve revision folk here. They will be able to give you a lot of support and I think you will be amazed by their success. I actually was just reading the lap band talk forum, a few friends post over there and I was reading thread after thread of poor results from the lap band along with the many ongoing complications that can pop up at anytime from the band. I have to say I am very glad I did the sleeve instead. Keep us updated!

    Nervous

Sexymomma - Congratulations on your upcoming surgery! Why am I sooooo nervous??? It is not my first weight loss surgery! I had a lap band placed in 2006. Revised to the gastric sleeve just last year...July 2017 and now scheduled for the granddaddy of all RNY on September 26th due to extremely painful GERD! I can't enjoy the excitement of being scheduled because my head space has me hung up and all in my feelings! The strangest and most frustrating thing is I can't figure what in the HECK I'm even nervous about! Tell me there are others out there that have been on this emotional rollercoaster while on their journey's. I can't be the only one.....right???????
  15. Ok. My story is kind of long. To make it short...I had lapband surgery in 2009. I had a bad experience and ended up with atelectasis and was in the hospital for four days. Also, I wasn't given a lot of education about the band before hand. I now refer to my previous surgeon as "the chop shop." I had my band removed after having far too many complications from it. It was removed by my current surgeon in March 2013. He tried to convince me to revise to a sleeve during the band removal but I didn't feel like I knew enough about it to have it done. I didn't want to make that mistake twice! He was super understanding and said we should take the band out and if I wanted a sleeve or bypass I could come back anytime. Nine months later I went back after doing a lot of my own research and consulting with my GP, OB (had a baby five months before my band was removed), and my endo (type 1 diabetes for 23 years). They all supported or suggested the gastric sleeve. I have been approved and done all the necessary steps to have surgery. I am scheduled for Feb. 13th. My question to everyone is how anxious/nervous are you/were you before surgery? I can't tell if my anxiety stems from the awful experience I had the first time around or if its normal. Last night I had a full panic attack and told my family I couldn't go through with it. Of course as soon as the attack ended I felt like a fool and today have felt completely at peace with the idea of surgery. I have had WLS before. I know how eating will be different and how it may effect my relationships. I just can't figure out if the anxiety is typical pre-op jitters or the fear of failing again? Possibly a mix of both? Anyway, enough of my story. I would love to hear how you might be feeling or did feel pre-op and maybe your (healthy) coping mechanisms. Thanks for taking time to read this!
  16. When I had my first band surgery I was just given a low calorie diet, not liquids, so I just asked my surgeon if I could do that again and she agreed. Actually I had my revision surgery with the same surgeon who's doing my sleeve and I did real food before that too. I don't know what all the factors are that surgeons consider in recommending certain pre-op diets, but I was relieved that she agreed! I just snacked on some unjury chicken Soup - it's very satisfying and really helped my headache (it's still there but much milder).
  17. I had my band in 2011 and I did well until about March 2013. Eventually in October we found out that my port was no longer connected to my lap band and needed to have revision surgery. I had the revision surgery, but got pregnant soon after so I never got it filled. After my pregnancy I finally got a fill. When I went back a month later, she had trouble giving me a fill and said I needed to have more surgery. I do not feel much restriction and I am wondering why there is a problem with getting a fill? Anyone else with this problem?

Low Blood Sugar 3 times this week

I am going thru the same thing. I was off my diabetes meds before surgery due to the preop diet. I noticed it two weeks ago when I almost passed out in my water arobics class. My A1C is very low compared to my last one so they think its been going on for a couple of months. After tracking I have noticed that I start getting symptoms under a reading of 80: headache is number one, weakness, shaky, anxious, light headed, dizziness and the urge to just eat and eat. Now that I know the symptoms I realize that it was happening a lot but didn't put it all together. When I get under 60 I get confused, disoriented and feel like I am going to pass out. I have to test my sugar constantly to stay on top of it. I have added more fiber to my diet and have been eatting more complex carbs and it seems to be a little better but still happens. I am having to eat three meals and three snacks a day and sometimes eatting doesn't bring it back up and I have to use the glucose tablets. After an ER trip, talking with my bariatric surgeons office multiple times they r calling it delayed or late dumping syndrome. I have a scope scheduled on the 16th to look at the opening to the small intestines. If the food is falling out to quickly because the opening is to big it hits the small intestine then the pancreas releases insulin which drops the blood sugar. I am hoping the opening is fine and it's just my body adjusting to losing 80 pounds in 4 months because this would be my 2nd revision surgery.. I had a stricture at 7 weeks out that they perforated trying to dialate it open. I could possibly have the complete opposite problem now. But it is all still worth it and I would do it all again if I had to.

    Band has to come out

My sister has the sleeve and it worked great for her. I was banded in 2009 and am going to be getting it out and switching to the sleeve. I've been having many issues with reflux, stomach pain, etc. I never know from one day to the next what I'll be able to eat or IF I'll even be able to hold Water down. There's a whole forum under the gastric sleeve section for band to sleeve revisions too, btw Lots of helpful info there!
  20. I am ignorant to this subject so I was curious as to why a hernia would warrant weight loss surgery; or even a revision. from what I am reading (or maybe I am reading/comprehending incorrectly). But I see a lot of people saying “I am having a revision because of GERD & a hernia.” or could it be they are having a revision & a hernia just at the same time?

    New to group,

It's tough for the first few weeks...you are sore and tired.Believe me it gets better...I had a revision from lapband to bypass on December 28,2015.I am so happy.Keep in mind I am a slow loser...I am down 40 pounds...People see the difference...I feel fantastic.
  22. PKinneB...I am scheduled for revision surgery in September but have been attending my bariatric support groups since May (three a month). At my last group there was a woman who spoke about her stall. She was doing everything right: sticking to the dietary plan, Water, exercise etc.... She did NOT lose weight for the first THREE months. Her body was holding on to everything it could. Finally, when her body realized she was not starving, she began to lose weight rapidly. (two pounds a DAY) Eventually she leveled out and everything worked out. She is eight years post-op and looks great. Her advice to the group, and mine to you is, do not give up! Ride it out. Do what you need to do, stick to your regime and stay clear of the scale- weigh once weekly if you can. Keep the faith!

    What was the deciding factor?

Hi, Chelsea I wish my nutritionist had told me that I have the sleeve and my reflux is extremely bad since I've been sleeved. So make sure you ponder on which procedure you want because now I'm in the process of trying to have a revision done from the sleeve to the bypass. I wish I had been informed... 24. On another forum I posted that I was banded in 2007. For me, it was a nightmare.....either too tight or too loose and my doc couldn't get a handle on it. It was taken out, port and all, in October 2014 after months of being awakened in the middle of the night with vomit forcefully coming out of my nose...... Since then, believe it or not I have gained back almost 60 pounds! I have new insurance which is Blue Shield of California. After a consult with my surgeon on a Monday a few weeks ago, I decided to revise to RNY. I asked her about the sleeve and she said she will not revise to a sleeve, ever, due to scar tissue as she believes there is a greater chance for leakage. Also, if someone has a predisposition for reflux like I did, she is especially adamant. Anyway, they submitted whatever they needed to submit to my insurance two days later on Wednesday and on Monday I was approved! I figured they must have seen my photo and said, "hell, we better get this gal in here quick", being that I'm gaining so fast, lol! I spoke with my surgeon on the Monday I was approved and she scheduled me for bypass on Monday, 3/31/15. Everything happened so fast my head is spinning! She asked me to lose 10pounds by then which I think I can do but no special diet or anything. And since I'm revising, I don't have to do the whole psychologist, nutritionist thing. I am feeling a little scared yet blessed at the same time! Marieze

    Waiting is so hard!

My consultation is in 2 days! I hope I click with this surgeon. I had a consultation with another surgeon a couple of weeks ago, but I didn't like how his office was run. It felt like a surgery mill, honestly, and left me wondering what kind of support I'd be getting after my revision surgery. When I tell a bariatric surgeon that I've been having issues with my band and that I'd already had replacement surgery once, I shouldn't be left on my own to find a radiologist that is familiar with the band in order to get an upper GI series done. About a week before that consultation, I had a severe sliming/PB episode while I was at work (I made the mistake of eating a raw carrot). It was the last straw for me. I'm having more issues with my band since then, and I'm honestly starting to think I've had another slip. I hate to say it, but I'm actually hoping I have, since it will make getting a revision approved a little easier. I'm having acid reflux (with which I only had issues when my last band had slipped), my esophagus and chest aches off and on, and my port area has been a lot more tender. I'm sick of not being able to know what I can or can't eat until I try to eat it, and then getting painfully "stuck" and suffering projectile sliming. Always having to know where the bathroom is when I go out to eat, so that I can rush there if my band has decided to be restrictive. I want to be able to eat fresh fruit and vegetables and not have to spit out the fibrous parts. I want to be able to eat at work without having to wonder if I'm going to have to run to the bathroom (really embarrassing when you work in a very small group). I'm just so tired of this.
