Hiatal hernia and Sleeve
1959JimmyJames replied to kleeper's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a band to sleeve revision and a hiatal hernia repair all at the same time. Surgery took 4 hours and I had no complications during or after surgery. I was really sore and in a lot of pain for about a week afterwards but I got through it. I am over 2 years post op now. I feel really good and all my lab work is excellent. When you start eating solid food again make sure you measure everything. After a while of doing this you will be able to eyeball it. Don't overeat. Protein first. No liquids an hour before during or after meals. You will get used to this routine and eventually you can eat whatever you want and even sip wine with your meal or some other beverage during your meal. No carbonated drinks though. Can't have the bubbles expanding in your stomach. I really miss drinking cold beer. When I say that you can eat anything that you want that means a portion only. You will not be able to eat very much but it can be anything that you want. That's the beauty of it. I don't feel deprived like when you are on a diet. I can go to the fridge and make myself whatever I am in the mood for. My wife can cook anything that she wants because I can eat it. I end up throwing most of it away but I feel satisfied. Good luck. -
Lapband/ Revision/ Gastric Sleeve?
carbgrl posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Anyone pay out-of-pocket for the lapband and later get insurance to pay for revision? I paid for lapband out of pocket now, gained weight back. I'm considering sleeve but can't afford to pay out of pocket again. I paid out of pocket for the lap band because I didn't want to jump through all the hoops for insurance. Anyone else with a similar situation? -

Welcome to our forums! We are definitely glad you have joined us. I had the band and revised to the sleeve and have never been happier. You are in a great position, in that your insurance will cover the sleeve. So many of them don't, and most of us end up going self-pay. -
Emergency Band Removal Should I Do Sleeve
Threetimesacharm replied to insanejane's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just had my revision on the 10th and it too is the best decision I have made. For you, I guess it matters why you had so many issues with the band: did you eat too much, too many wrong foods, grazing all day. Many factors can contribute to the failure of the band. If you did everything you were supposed to 100% I say go for it. Remember that the sleeve is also just a tool and it is a really big life changing committment to make it work. Good luck in your decision. -
Thanks! It was a very long 3 months. I had my revision Jan 13 2014 and up until now I've only lost 7-10lbs. I was getting very frustrated lately because the scale hasn't moved and I was reading how it seemed like every other person out there was dropping weight like crazy and it seemed liked they weren't doing anything to lose the weight. Since I can eat more that 600-800 calories at a time I will have to work harder at losing the weight. I am determined to get results and lose this weight!

Psychiatric Evaluation
LosingItForMe2011 replied to jeanetteramirez2's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yup...Want to know why you want the surgery so they can make sure it's for the right reasons such as health, more mobility, less aches and pains etc vs because you want to get a boyfriend/girlfriend, become popular etc. They do make sure you don't have an eating disorder, want to make sure you realize it's a life long decision and they want you to know you can call on them for any questions you have afterwards. They help make sure you're in the best mindset for the surgery and have realistic goals. I really liked my therapist and only had to see her for two required visits. I had started seeing a therapist who deals with food issues outside of the bariatric center before I even started with them just to make sure I have the tools I need to make the right decisions eating wise and dealing with the head hungry issues. But then again I've gone the bariatric route before with my lapband so I knew already that I wanted to make sure I had the help with this more permanent change. My lapband had to be removed after it prolapsed really badly - I had already had it revised once before. So having gained almost all my weight back I knew I wanted the help to keep me on the right track after this surgery as well. It's been a great help. There are a lot of great books that help too. Good luck with your appointments -

Goal Weight Setting
lauraellen80 replied to SleeveGal's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon has not given me a goal weight, either. His PA just gave me the average "excess weight lost" percentage range (60-70%) as an idea of what I could expect to lose. That would have put me between 165 and 175, which is still obese for my height (5'2"). Initially, I chose 145 lbs as my personal goal even though I would have still been in the "overweight" category, because it's a weight that I felt OK at in college, and I simply could not wrap my mind around being any smaller than that. But once I really started losing post-op, I revised my goal to 135 lbs, which put me at the top of the "normal" weight range. I'm now at 128.8, just a few pounds heavier than I was in high school! I had to postpone my 6-month follow up until after the holidays, but I'll see what my surgeon has to say then. @@WL WARRIOR - Where did you find the info about working towards a "set point"? Does Dr. Weiner have a website, or has he put out a book? I'd be interested to learn more! -
Anyone going to be going to Mexicali Bariatric with Dr. Aceves between 1/21/2014 - 1/27/2014? I'm going for a band to sleeve revision. Flying in to San Diego from Vancouver Canada on the 21st, surgery on the 22nd, three nights in the hospital, and then opting for an additional two nights at the hotel. So excited!!! :-) Tim

Questions For Dr. Aceves' Patients
SippNSotaGirl posted a topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Hi everyone! I have my LapBand revision to sleeve next Tuesday. I'm starting my pre-surgery diet tomorrow. I'm starting to get more excited and nervous. Dr. Aceves will be my surgeon. For those of you who had him, can you tell me about cellular service at the hospital? I understand the hospital is very close to the border. Do you think I'll be roaming or charged for international usage if I use my cell phone there? Only one person knows I'm going to have the surgery, and I'm going alone. I don't want people getting worried if I don't answer my phone for an entire week. (I live alone, too, so my family checks on me every so often to make sure I'm okay.) Any thoughts? Closely related, I think the nurses will call someone when surgery is over to let my family know I'm okay. Is that correct? If so, I'll have them call my sister. She's the one person who knows I'm having the surgery. She's a nurse, too, and she's had the surgery, so she's been helping me about what to expect. Most of my questions now are specific to having surgery in Mexico and by Dr. Aceves. Thanks in advance!! -
May 12 is the date for starting PreOP Diet and seeing the Surgeon.
rsr53 commented on rsr53's blog entry in rsr53's Blog
Thank you! This is revision surgery. I had bypass done in 2001, but about 5 yrs ago started weight regain and a host of other symptoms with my blood pressure, heart, and bone loss. I also suffer lowback pain that has also aggravated my life. I am sure my doctor wants optimum results from me due to the bypass revision, so I started a little plan of my own but will definitely follow his and the dietician's instructions for preop eating/drinking tomorrow. My target date is either May 27 or May 31. Sooo excited to get this part done and recovery in full gear!! ] Good luck with your diet. I know the liver can be a tricky little booger when it wants to. I found out the hard way when I took the hcg drops. My doctor had a fit and then showed me the results of my liver lab. Thank the Lord it did not do permanent damage. Doesn't it feel good to know we have this great opportunity before us? By the way I am not a guy, I have to change my little head guy. Mac -
a little discouraged after information meeting
docbree posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I finally had the information meeting with my prospective surgeon last Friday. I had really been looking forward to it - but left feeling deflated. I told him I was worried about not being able to walk with my rheumatoid arthritis if I can't take ibuprofen. He never answered me regarding that issue - just said the need for other RA meds would decrease. I also think I will need a lot of support after the surgery because I think it will be very difficult psychologically. He never mentioned a support group so I asked if they had one "yes, we do," was the only response - no additional information whatsoever. In general, I felt like he didn't really address my concerns, I got the feeling there would not be much after care. I have decided to get a consultation with another surgeon. I know that the one I went to is very talented surgically, but after the surgery I don't think he'll really be there. There was another patient there who wanted to schedule a band to sleeve revision and the Dr. told him he looked familiar - the patient said "you did my lap band and I saw you referred me for an EGD last month." Kind of felt like we were just warm bodies sitting there. Maybe I'm wrong- maybe that's how all surgeons are and I am just making excuses for my fear and second thoughts. My mom went with me and kept saying she was afraid I would become an alcoholic if I wasn't able to eat junk food, and that I would be even more unhappy being thin with sagging skin than being fat. I appreciate your thoughts -
Just got approved.. Nerves kicking in!

Never let anyone push you into any surgical procedure of any kind. Whatever op you choose, make sure you do it because you know that it is absolutely right for you. I chose the Lap Band for several reasons: Procedure: Fast and lower impact on my bod. No cutting and removal or rerouting of my internal organs. Adjustable: Mama is a control freak who likes things just so. Yep. Knowing that I can customize my band to my exacting specifications was a big draw for me. Revisable: Should there be a difficulty in future, it is pretty fixable. Should it fail, it is removable. Reversable: Let's face it. Sh*t happens. If, God forbid I get sick or injured to the point that my band is in the way of my treatment and or healing, it can easily be removed, my stomach will return to normal and I can get on with whatever I have to get on with. A sleeve or bypass would not have given me that option. I love my band, it is helping me, it is working for me and I am happy that I got it. But in the end, you need to think through all of your options very carefully, decide what will work best for YOU. For your body, your health concearns, lifestyle, what you are willing to work with and so forth then go forward, secure on the knowledge that you are acting in your own best interests. Good luck, no matter what surgery you choose. It is all about regaining your life and health! -
Obesity, Cancer and Bariatric Surgery
Travelher replied to nico08's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
As someone who just had a revision from a lap band to a bypass. I do not recommend the lap band! I had mine in for about 11 years. I developed acid reflux with the band and found the fill level to be variable. in the morning i had difficulty with getting Water down, by evening I could eat steak. Eventually it failed altogether and would not take a fill. No one told me when they put it in that it would eventually wear out and need to be replaced. Revision was the best decision I ever made. Just my 2 cents. Make sure you do your research. Many surgeons are no longer doing them because of the known issues (mine included). -
Did You Buy The Additional "insurance" For Your Procedure?
PEvette replied to MamaOf8's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Just speaking from a personal stance, I believe in insurance because life is unpredictiable....the surgeon I chose office tried to help me in getting the complication insurance but the insurance compan rejected me because I was a revision patient, I thought about changing doctors because I knew of another doctor and the insurance company would cover me, but I decided to have faith and stick with my doctor.... Now post-op I'm praising God I made it, I'm having a few bumps in the road but I believe its from doing too much too soon.... In my opinion, get it, because you just never know, esspecially since you are planning to leave the country -
I was originally banded in 2003 at just 18. I was 250, got down to 170, had a slip, erosion and removal. When my band was replaced a year later, I had gained everything back, plus some and was at 270. I lost about 60 with my second band and started the roller coaster cycle that continued for 7 more years. Up 40, down 20, up 20, down 10, up 60, down 20... And after having my kids and looking at turning 30 in the worst shape of my life, I decided to revise to a sleeve. The day I decided to revise is my before picture. Thanksgiving 2012. I was 270lbs at 5'1. I busted my butt and was at 230 the day of surgery, May 11, 2013. Today, 14 months out, I'm at 125 and couldn't be happier. Maintenance is hard of course, but so far, it's actually easier than I thought it would be. So much easier than it was with my Lapband. I don't post much anymore because life has gotten so busy now that I have so much more energy. But I always loved before and afters, especially of revisions, when I was pre-op. I was told and feared that I wouldn't be as successful because I was a revision, but it just wasn't true. Bust your butt, use your sleeve and follow the rules, and revisions have just as much chance at success as "virgin sleevers." So here it is: HW: 270 SW: 230 Surgeon's Goal: 150 My Goal: 135 CW: 125

New hair growth PRE-surgery!
Momonanomo replied to stacechase's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
During my pre-op and for the first 2 months post, my nails grew like crazy! To the point that I had to actually get clippers and cut them so I could type. That's never happened in my life! I also attributed it to the revised diet with increased protein. I've always had a ton of hair so I didn't notice any increase as far as that goes. Today marks 11 weeks since surgery, and my nail growth has slowed, but I still haven't lost any hair. HOWEVER I will not be surprised when it happens.....haven't heard from anyone yet who didn't experience it..... -
There are medical studies about GERD and VSG, but the most recent that I'm aware of showed no correlation or limited correlation. That being said, from experience there are quite a few people on forums like this that complain of GERD after VSG. But it seems to be hit or miss and just because you had or did not have GERD before VSG does not predict whether or not you'll have it. I seem to be constantly battling it. It's not so severe that I'd do anything drastic about it, I just wish I could get off the PPI's (Nexium) because I don't want to be on them for life. I do see quite a few revisions on here from VSG to RNY because of severe GERD. If you have to have a revision, I would say that you will have to go through most of the usual pre and post-op challenges you did with the sleeve and yes, that might include hair loss. Tellogen effluvium is not specific to type of surgery, but more because of the shock to your system. ANY surgery could cause it, even non-bariatric surgery because anesthesia and the healing process disrupts the growth cycle of your hair. Good luck!

Hii all! I am new to the forum. I'm having revision surgery. Going from gastric plication to RNY bypass. I am approved by insurance and scheduled for surgery on 3/31. My doctor does not have me on a pre-op diet and he does not enforce one prior to the weekend leading up to surgery. I was wondering what the pre-op diet consists of for others out there. I have had way too many "last suppers" anticipating surgery and have put on additional pounds. I need to buckle down over the next few weeks and get my mind and body prepared. I welcome any input. Thanks! - Janet
