I have to get rid of H Pylori before I can be scheduled for surgery!
SBell35 replied to iamdeannadixon's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm so sorry that your progress has slowed! I know how frustrating it has to be but look on the bright side, they are just trying to get you into the best shape so you will have fewer complications after! I know it's just another delay in an already lengthy process and I'm sorry. I just hope that it will go away after the first treatment so you can keep moving and get your surgery date!! Keep us posted and know I'm sending you good energy for speedy healing!! -
It will be so much cheaper to see your surgeon once or twice than to have major complications that could put you into the hospital! I know when your not insured or insurance doesn't cover doctors visits a lot of us tend to stop seeing our doctor. However, I think this could be the difference between being successful with the band or not! I hope all goes well with you and there is an easy solution to your problem! please let us know how it turns out!!

My short term doesn't kick in until I am off for 5 work days. By the time it kicks in and the paperwork gets processed I will be back at work. I have to use my own vacation time those 1st days anyway. I work a 4-day work week and because of that I get more time off while using less of my vacation time. If, God forbid, I have complications, the short term is ready to kick in after I have used my vacation time. Just think of the vacations after you lose the weight. They will be so exciting. :bored:

when was your 1st bowel movement aftery surgery?
emmas mom posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi sleevers! Got back from hospital wednesday. I havent pooped since tuesday morning and I havent been able to fart, just burp. I took my stool softener this morning. Anyone else have these issues? I want to be sure this isnt a complication! Thanks for any responses. xoxo -
I was able to fully exercise (weight training and cardio) three months post op. immediately after surgery and while in recovery I was walking walking and more walking. I took it slow at first but it got easier as time went on. There is alot of excess gas from the laproscopic surgery that needs to dissipate and walking does wonders to get rid of the bloating you'll feel after surgery. I now walk/ hike 3-5 miles a day and rotate My gym routine for cardio and weight training. I also do the Insanity program! As for Lehigh Valley Hospital.... Dr Richard Boorse saved my life! I had no complications and we thoroughly discussed all weight loss procedures before my final decision of Riux en Y bypass. The surgery took about 2 hours and was out the next day. Walking a few hours after surgery. The staff and EVERYONE at Lehigh Valley was very attentive and on point. I had a low grade fever after surgery when I got to my room for the overnight stay. The AC was not working and room had no air flow. Within a few minutes maintenance showed up to service AC and give me a pedestal fan. Fever disappeared in less than an hour. With any program one has to complete a Pre-op program and each network has different standards. I started my journey at St. Lukes but had to switch half way through becuase new job and different insurance. St Lukes has a bit more intensive Pre-op program as far as surgery approval testing and weight loss requirement Pre op. Lehigh valley had a program that was more conducive to my schedule. I scheduled the appointments that worked for me. There was a fee which needs to be paid up front and if your insurance does it try to get reimbursed. This fee covers your life long commitment and any lifetime support you need for nutrition, pshycological exams, exercise advice, etc. consider it a down payment on a new life. Small fee to lay for a new life and it can be paid in installments. All co-pays will apply as well.. My whole process Pre op testing/ Pre op program, etc lasted three months as my insurance did not require any kind of Pre op program participation. However every insurance varies.... BOTH programs had same Pre op program length either 3 or 6 month. And both health networks are centers of excellence. So I am not bias to either program- please keep that in mind as I have done both programs but as stated needed to finish with Lehigh Valley becuSe of new job and new insurance. I hoped I answered all questions please let me know if you want additional info.

WLS Blog - Daily Updates...Laughs, Tears, TMI!!

How the heck do I know what sleevers end up looking like? I never met one. Lol. Actually, I meant to add that the bypass patients that are over 2 years out look good and normal, so that sickly look does seem to go away over time. Temporary, like the hair loss. Weight loss, although nice, is not my biggest concern. It's health. The bypass surgery will help the sickest of people to become healthier, but the same way that it is more powerful for them, it may be too powerful for a less-sick group. I appreciate the feedback about how my post came across.. I'm not trying to scare tactic anyone, I just like for people to weigh all their options. A good friend got the band because she thought her only other choice was the bypass, and that was more surgery than she wanted. She might have been a good candidate for the sleeve. There are two major problems with the sleeve that isn't as much with bypasses. GERD and leaks. Both tend to show up within the first few months. Many that get severe gerd go on to revise to bypass. Leaks can be a real nightmare, fortunately they are relatively rare. The bypass tends to have similar numbers of complications near the surgery, but more that show up later down the line. As I said, more severe procedure for the sicker people. The other thing to keep in mind is bypasses have been around a while. The sleeve is relatively new, so we don't know what will happen in 20 years... for all we know, they may be an unsustainable fad like the lap band. You want scare tactics? Ask me about DSs! Lol! -
In one week, I'm having surgery. I have a sleeve, currently, and need to treat a rare condition called achalasia. So, to reduce complications from a myotomy, I am revising my sleeve to a modified gastric bypass. I'm getting a second chance at losing all the weight that I needed to lose from my sleeve. I was originally over 460 lbs (not by much, but that's as high as my doctors scale went at the time). I had my sleeve, lost about 150lbs and then got pregnant. I gained back, in total, about 70lbs in a year and a half of being pregnant and post partum. Then I got back on track. I was heading in the right direction until this achalasia started about a year ago. The condition has made it very difficult for me to eat, so in the past year since being sick, I've lost another 40ish lbs... so little because about the only thing I CAN consume comfortably are carbs. (Which I really don't appreciate at all post op WLS!) Currently, I'm about 320. I'm really trying to be optimistic about losing weight and fixing my issues with eating due to the medical condition - but being a previous WLS patient and knowing the realities of post op life, I'm having a hard time NOT focusing on how loose my skin will be, what I'll look like, how I'll afford clothes - something that didn't consume me so much before because I was single and childless and made decent money... but now I'm a mom, I have an SO (and he assures me that he loves me no matter what my body looks like), money is tight... it's all just so stressful. I have body issues to work on and don't know how to change my mindset of being so critical of myself. That's definitely part of it. But there is a part of me that was okay with not "being skinny". I lost enough weight to feel better about myself, look better, but still look like ME. I need to appreciate the change, I suppose. I just feel like I can't talk about all these things to anyone in my real life. They just don't understand. They can't relate! Can anyone here relate? How do you deal with your unshare-able thoughts?

Hello, I'm new to the boards but I am from Houston! Northwest near Cypress to be exact! Looking forward to meet you all, I am still in the process PRE OP, on Monday I have my last dietitian consultation! I want to be banded asap but I have had some complication choosing doctors that are on Tricare's network. It is being sorted out though, although now the surgery date won't be as close as I thought and wanted to. Nice meeting you all!

The SAGB Swedish lapband versus Inamed lapband
lizlapband posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am scheduled for a surgery with the SAGB lap band. Can anyone tell me if that lapband is as good as the Inamed ??? Are the complications rates the same ??? Thank you ! -
When I first started this process I really appreciated hearing peoples experiences (good and bad), so I thought I would return the favor. About 1 1/2 years ago I had an abnormal mammogram and it really scared me. 3 big contributers to breast cancer are drinking, smoking, and obesity. I quit drinking and smoking immediately and made an appt with the lap band surgeon. Tomorrow will be 1 year since I had my band placed. I consider the band to be a complete success. This morning I weighed in at 151.8. My highest weight was 270 lbs. I was 250 when I first met with the surgeon, 231 after the 6 month supervised diet, 218 on the day of surgery (after 2 weeks of liquid protein diet). I am wearing a size 6/8 pant and a medium shirt. I didn't think it was really possible since I had failed at so many diets and diet programs in the past. I am still surprised when I pick up my jeans and I think, "look how tiny these are, how is it possible that I fit into these". I follow a high protein low carb diet 80% of the time. I don't count calories, but I estimate about 1000-1200 calories per day. I work out about 5 days a week. I mostly do cardio, but I want to start adding weights to see if I can help this sagging skin. I have an appointment with a plastic surgeon on Friday to see about a tummy tuck. This has really been a life changer for me, I am back to running which I used to love to do. I have done a couple of obstacle course 5k runs and a 4 1/2 mile mud run. I am taking my son to Chicago to do the Lucky 7k on March 16th. In 18 months I have gone from being morbidly obese to 2.8 lbs from being considered a normal weight. I think I have had 2 stuck episodes. I have vomited due to eating too much or drinking too soon after eating, mostly in the beginning while I was learning to work with the band. I have been on these boards pretty regularly since I started thinking about having this done, it seems like the journey is different for everyone. For me it was a fairly easy, complication free experience. I think the hardest thing for me is that I keep thinking it is going to quit working. Every time I go clothes shopping I think, "I better get these now, I don't know how long I will be able to stay in a size 6". I have had a biopsy and I still get mammograms every 3 months, but at least I know I have done absolutely everything I can to live my healthiest life.

Anyone Else Always Hungry? 5 Weeks Post Gastric Sleeve Surgery
dmike321 replied to dmike321's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Lisa, I know that I have had great weight loss the amazing thing is that I have been stalled for over a week now. As far as my diet goes ever since I was told I could advance to the mushie diet I have kinded cheated and not chopped or blended any of my food. I have had absolutely no complications with my new tummy. I see people posting that they barely get down 1 egg and I have been putting down 2 or more if I eat them alone. My typical daily diet is 2 scrambled eggs with a piece of toast for Breakfast, a greek yogurt for a snack, tuna or chicken salad for luch sometimes with whole wheat crackers, then a cheese stick or half cup of cottage cheese for another snack. All of that takes place at my work between 8 - 4 I usually have around 200 calories left for dinner where I try to have chicken, a vegetable and a potatoe. As for my hunger being an acid problem, I don't think that is the problem. I have been using liquid zantac sine the day I was able to return home after surgery. I have also tried using tums with no change. Hope this answers some of your questions and I will be looking forward to your feedback. -
So, last night I went to my first lapband support group (after 3 1/2 yrs). Thought it might be good for me. There were 3 of us. Just the nitht before, the sleeve support group met (same program director for both meetings) was standing room only. What's going on with all the banders? The program director (not my surgeons office, its 3 hrs away) said they hardly ever do band surgery anymore. People complain about complications and maintenance. Im so afraid we're gunna be dinasours, only referenced in medical journals as bariatric failures. Has anyone else noticed this? And amongst the 3 of us, I was the most successful. One lady has been banded for 4 yrs and has only lost 40 lbs. The other for 2 yrs and lost about 50. Made me feel good. And I was starting to feel like a failure. Marci

BMI 32 pre- op. Any thoughts?
MichiganChic replied to regner's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Personally, I would not have a major, potentially life threatening surgery for a BMI that low, especially with no associated health risks. If you lost 10% of your weight, that would probably be enough to move you out of obesity and into overweight. I know people here with low BMI who have done this surgery, succeeded, and are fine, but you asked for opinions. My opinion is that the risk far outweighs the benefit in this circumstance. The statistical risk of complication is low....until YOU become the one with the complication, then it's 100% you...and your three little kids. Not sure if you've looked on this site for complications, but I'd suggest you research that. Whatever you decide, good luck! -
Gastric sleeve to gastric bypass revision
Titaniumsleeved2014 replied to msmreed47's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi everyone, I was revised from sleeve to RNY March 16th due to complications and severe case of GERDS and sadly I'm really regretting I'd rather had kept suffering from previous complications... I have yet to eat anything that I can keep down.... Not to mention my weight loss is at a complete halt for over a month no matter how much I work out....and I'm completely disappointed in both of these surgeries and wish I never had surgery I'm still over 200lbs.... Any Bloodless Surgery Hospitals For Vsg In Mexico
comfortably numb replied to ChristyLove's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
They all do "bloodless" surgery. It's minimally invasive. 4 tiny incisions that looks like a cat scratched you afterward. And like mentioned above, as they cut away the stomach it also staples it. Complications are another thing. In that case none of them can guarantee that you won't need blood or some alternative method. -
GPS Update: Important new information
Tiffykins replied to DrWatkins's topic in Gastric Plication Surgery Forum
I just want to address the bolded statement. I had a leak 2 days post my revision. I also had horrible anesthesia complications during the repair, landed on life support for 4-5 days and my prognosis was grave at best. I had an extensive 3.5 month long recovery with an additional hospitalization for abscesses, was on TPN with a central pic line for over 2 weeks with nothing by mouth for over 20 days after the leak repair. My husband was deployed, and not allowed to come home during all of this even as I lay in ICU with a 10% chance of survival. I can assure you that my recovery was pure hell, but not once did I think "oh crap what have I done!". To this very day, I have absolutely ZERO regrets nor am I anything short of 100% certain that I made the right choice with VSG. I never once doubted that I made the "right" choice with VSG, and today, I'm even more certain that I made the best decision. I've said it many times here that I would endure every struggle and obstacle in my recovery to live the life I have today. I just thought I would throw out my experience to give a different perspective on complications with any surgery. -

I think you are a liar. I know for a fact Aceves will not do this procedure because it's a surgery type only the bottom feeder surgeons do. No good surgeon will do plication. Huacuz... HA! Can we say bottom feeder in 10 different ways? I'm not a fan of Watkins, I think he uses message boards for free advertising. I think Watkins is a loser in every possible way. So be very clear I am not defending him. But I am calling you out as a liar. Lopez-Corvala had the SAME complication, the blood supply was cut off from the stomach. And you are trying to tell us this does not happen? Look at my above post, I gave you the damn link to see for yourself. You should have looked at it before blowing smoke up everyone's butt. Dr. Kuri is a band mill, he doesn't even DO plication or the real deal, a sleeve. You claim to have spoken with Dr. Aceves. Perhaps you should be aware, in order to speak with Dr. Aceves you must first complete the medical questions, submit them to the office and then after he reviews it he returns your call. I call bull shit. Also, Dr. Aceves wouldn't down another surgeon if you paid him to. Something I disagree with but it is what it is. You are a liar. -
Struggling through Pre-Op diet
anewme111 replied to _2juicy_'s topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I did. I lost no weight before my surgery, I gained! I moved my surgery date up and there were no complications. Just do the best you can to avoid fats. The pre op is to lower the fat around your liver so that the dr can get to your stomach easier. Don't sweat it. Now that I am post op just over a week, it's a mental game. Certainly not physical. You WILL have to follow your duet afterwards or you'll injure yourself. The surgery is a tool. Use it wisely!!! It's the hardest thing I had to get through so far physically and now I did it there's no turning back. Happily I am 14 lbs lighter. Good luck!!! -

One week to go....
momlambert replied to Myskinnydreams0605's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
It's totally normal to be scared and worried! I totally was when I had my revision on December 10--and I'm 63 years old, so I was afraid that would complicate things as well. Thankfully, everything went well--a little damage to my stomach from the band so my pouch is a bit larger than the surgeon wanted it to be, but, other than that, everything went well. I'm six weeks out and still figuring our how to eat correctly and how to get in 60 grams of Protein and 64 oz. of Water every day. Believe me, it's a huge challenge. It definitely is a learning process! Good luck to you. If you are like me, after the surgery you'll wonder what all the fuss was about. -
Considering revision to Gastric Sleeve -- should I?
Meley24 replied to Meley24's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
It's an awful feeling losing all that weight to then put it back on in such a short period of time. And I'm sorry you had to experience that as well. I had thrown out many of my clothes because I swore I would never get back to that size and now I'm getting back to "that size" and having to shop all over again. I want to try dieting on my own and I've somewhat convinced myself that I can do it, but really who am I kidding, I couldn't do it before and I probably can't do it after the band. There are very few people who've had the band removed and go on to maintain their weight loss--very few though. I meet with my surgeon today and I'll find out if the band slipped again (actually hoping that it did but either way I'm going to have them remove it). I'll let you guys know what I decide! I think you/your surgeon made the right decision by waiting in between surgeries, lessens your chance of complications is what I've been told. Sending lots of prayers your way for a safe and successful surgery. Please keep me posted on your progress! -
Ok, so I am new to this forum. My name is Tricia and I was banded at St Vincents Trussville AL on Nov 22, 2011. I quickly lost 50lbs and the loss slowed down to a stand still. I was ok with that for a while and went to have them put more Fluid in my band. I went from a 7.5cc to a 9.5 cc over a few months. I got the restriction I needed, but over time developed the horrid complication of nausea and vomiting just about everything including Water. Went back to their office, ( I live 50+ miles away), had a barium swallow and endoscopy which were both inconclusive. Had all fluid removed and basically was told my system needed a break and to reboot. I (and I know this is my fault for non restraint!) quickly gained back those 50 lbs plus a few friends. While all of this was going on, I lost the job with the bariatric coverage and now have only my spouse insurance which has no bariatric. Fast forward to early this year, had fluid put back in again and finally got an appointment where I saw the MD and not the nurse practitioner for the first time since surgery in 2011. He recommended starting over and bumped me up to 7.5cc. I explained to him that I am extremely frustrated with the band and the lack of patient care I have received from him personally since my surgery, and that I would like to explore the option of getting this band out and having the sleeve done. He said that he was sorry and basically since I no longer have bariatric coverage I am out of luck. I have gone to a seminar for a bariatric MD in Huntsville, but he wants $500 up front with no guarantee that he will even take me on as a patient! SO - here I am needing to start all over on my journey - almost 3 years out. I am disgusted and frustrated. Is there anyone here who has had a similar experience and been able to make the band work? I have pain that radiates up into my left shoulder almost every time I eat anything tougher than the consistency of an egg. Because of this I end up either not eating or eating "slider" type foods that I know are no good. Sometimes I wish I had never done this surgery!

Considering revision to Gastric Sleeve -- should I?

I'll keep you posted after my surgery if there are complications. I really want to follow doctors orders to avoid those things you mentioned. Wish me well!, -
Last minute fears are normal. I had a lot of "what if?" thoughts as well. I think I remember reading the stomach cancer post you are referring, but cannot remember all the details. I think that it was not related to vsg, but people who had cancer, so not sure if the correlation could be drawn between the two since we had normal stomachs without disease to begin with...I just cannot remember. As for long term consequences. My family has a history of diabetes, both overweight and healthy weight individuals, so I might not have missed the boat on that. There are also numerous cancers that have killed many (grandparents, great aunts and uncles, cousins) in my family and I'm probably not safe from those either. I guess I just felt in my situation it's a crapshoot. I might as well live as healthy as I can in the time I have on this earth...not saying that I'll do anything to intentionally hurt my health, I personally just felt after my research on the vsg, the pro's outweighed the possible cons. I'm very happy that the surgery is not reversible. I don't ever want to gain all of my weight back. Good luck on your decision. I couldn't have done this if I had MAJOR concerns, but although I had fears of having complications, everything else was settled in my mind. I felt if I made it through the possible complication's phase (although many on here have had them and done just fine as well), I'd live a much healthier, longer life than without the surgery. Good luck coming to a decision you can live with!
