  1. Another option is to find a new local bariatric surgeon/specialist. Let them start from the beginning, go over everything and do their own testing.
  2. I agree a naturopath can be a big help. If you don’t have someone near you, can your PCP refer you to a digestive health specialist in your area? Or do you have a different Bariatric or non surgical weight-loss specialist in your area you can call to speak? (My program has the surgical and non surgical weight-loss specialists in the same office. Both are overseen by medical doctors, have nutritionists and nurses). Another option to look into is your health insurance. Some insurance plans offer wellness programs (at no cost) where you can virtually (or by phone) meet with nurses and dietitians that can review your concerns, offer guidance and help connect you with medical professionals in your area that work with your insurance. Sorry you are going through this… I hope you can find answers and feel better soon.
  3. Have you tried seeing a naturopath? I was having a problem with anemia & I did not like the side effects from the iron from the drugstore! I started seeing a naturopath & she is trying a different approach. There are chiropractors in my area that look at all your blood work including all of your vitamin & mineral levels. They will tell you what you need to take to bring your levels up. I also take a powdered “greens blend”. I buy it at Sam’s for about $24. You can buy something similar at Sprouts. It called Greens Blend by Amazing Grass. It is considered a superfood. I mix a scoop into some apple juice or water in the morning. I use it to wash down all my pills. It really is hard for us to get in all the fruits & veggies along with all of the protein requirements because of your tiny little tummies! Best of luck to you.

    Pre-PreOP Diet and Appointment Jitters

Take a deep breath… give yourself a little grace and just be honest with your team when you talk to them. When I had my first appointment they gave me instructions on what my program required (I didn’t have to loose weight but I couldn’t gain weight). Had my final weigh in today. The dietitian I met with was super nice - she said to call if I had questions, concerns or got off track and she (or her team mate) would answer any questions I had or make recommendations for getting back on track. If you are worried about what the pre-op diet is, can you ask for an appointment with the program dietitian/nutritionist so that you can talk about your concerns or ask questions about what is involved? Maybe knowing some more information will help set your mind at ease. I was given the pre-op diet ahead of time to go over and ask questions to make sure I understood what they wanted. I started trying some of the options so when the time comes I know I can tolerate the options to make the whole process easier. I also have a very enlarged liver - and NASH … that’s what sent me down the path for surgery. I expressed that concern when I talked to the program psychologist about having the surgery. She reassured me that I’m not the only person the surgeons have had to address that with and the nutritionist reiterated that today. The whole point of the pre-op diet is to shrink the liver, make it more pliable and help the surgeons be able to safely do the surgery. You can get back on track and while I’m not looking forward to my own Pre-op, I know it will be difficult… but we can get through this. You have a lot of support on here and we are all with you in this.

    August surgery buddies!

So today I learned something pretty interesting that I wanted to share. All of us have a high protein intake that we have to have post-op so I was sure the collagen that I've been adding to my water would count toward that protein intake level. I checked with my nutritionist and she said that collagen is fantastic to take for hair, skin, and nails but it is not a complete protein to count towards my total daily protein intake. So I got to researching and there is a product here on Bariatric Pal for liquid predigested protein. So I sent the link for my nutritionist to review and she came back that since this collagen has tryptophan in it that it completes the protein and can be applied to the daily count. So get this... 2 TBSP of this liquid protein equals 20 grams of protein! https://store.bariatricpal.com/products/pre-protein-20-liquid-predigested-protein-16oz-bottle-grape You can add this to your water easily. So in essence, if I'm struggling to get water down, I can also use this to ensure I'm getting the protein needed. So I'm kinda excited about this Has anyone else found any tips or tricks they are going to try?

    Update On Me (Surgery: 5/19/21)

UPDATE: It's been a while since I've been on and posted so I figured I'd so so quick. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING has changed for me!!! Still stuck at 235-ish (and have been since the end of last Oct) and can't seem to lose anymore no matter what the hell I do!! I did start Rybelsus a few months ago and made it through a month of the 3mg dose and a month through the 7mg does. Then, when my doc put me on the final dose of 14mg a few weeks ago, my insurance suddenly decided it was no longer gonna cover it!! Not sure why the allowed the other doses/months and not the new one. Doc and I are trying to appeal it (cause it costs about $1300 out of pocket a month without insurance and has no generic). Their one reason was that I was NOT a uncontrolled Type 2 Diabetic. They also said I needed to be in a weigh loss program or seeing a weight loss doctor in order to have it approved for weight loss reasons. I asked my family doc if my surgeon qualifies as that and so he sent him a messaged asking the same thing. Just wondering if it is a matter of the surgeon prescribing it vs. my family doc. Who knows. Anyway, just waiting on hearing back about that. Not even sure that will help me either. Don't know what else to do and just trying to accept the fact that I most likely will be at this weight forever. Which SUCKS!!! I wanted to get down to at least 180. I'm swimming damn near 4 hours every day or walking for at least an hour and of course depending on who, doc wise, I speak to they each have something different to say. Walk less, walk more, walk slow, walk fast, do weights, don't do weights......UUUUUgggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhh! I've tried it all. Upped water, lowered water, ate more protein, ate less protein, ate more food, ate less food, just don't know what else to do so pretty much just been living my life doing whatever. Haven't been logging my food for months but not doing anything really different food wise than I was when I was logging. Just wondered if being so strict and regimented was maybe causing the stall so I stopped but I guess that wasn't the case either. Anyway, that's that.
  7. I do love me some meal prep! Things I’ve learned- individual Greek yogurts while more expensive are easier for “no spoon” days. I usually add homemade granola or a 100 calorie pack of nuts and fruit for a quick protein packed meal. cooking a protein bland for the first cook makes customized meals easier later. A beef roast in beef broth can later be made into shredded beef for tacos, BBQ beef, or korean beef bowls. I love soup! I’ll usually make a batch on my meal prep days and either put it in the fridge or freeze it. Scrambled eggs (so they’re still glossy and not rubbery- most people overcook scrambled eggs) are great to put into meal prep containers with a couple sausage links or patties and microwaved later in the week. Hard boiled eggs are another great option. Just peel and store in the fridge for up to a week. They’re good as egg salad or on salads. Use a lettuce knife- it’s a special knife made of nylon with serrated edges that cuts lettuce so it doesn’t oxidize. This keeps lettuce longer over the week after you prep it so it doesn’t get brown and yucky.

Congratulations 🎊 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 I had felt the same way about food my entire life until about 10 years ago. When the weight started coming in, I said screw it and I started eating. Now since surgery, same date as you, I can take food or leave it. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I have also lost 32 lbs,, and I’m cleared to run. I have found that staying hydrated is the most important thing I can do. Since I have no appetite, the few bites I have per day and high quality protein. CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN! 🎉🎉🎉
  9. I agree with everything everyone else said about your antidepressant being stopped so I won't comment on that, but I can comment on those early days and intolerance to the protein shakes. I found them SO DISGUSTING and I was very depressed and kept wondering why I did this to myself. Other people had good suggestions for that too, but one thing my dietitian suggested was collagen peptides. I couldn't stand the taste of any other protein supplement at that time, especially whey. Collagen peptides have the least flavor (imo) and they're especially easy to mix into things like broth to get that extra protein. It really does get better! Hang in there! June 2022 surgery buddies

Hi everyone! So today I went to my 1 month post op doctor's visit. My labs were impressive - thank goodness, as I was worried. I have lost 32 pounds since surgery 6/8/22. I did not lose any weight pre op, in fact I gained as I enjoyed a "last hurrah" eat fest. I was cleared for all gym workouts! Yaaaay! Also, no more protein shakes as I now need to eat food rich in protein. I am also on a regular high protein low carbs diet - 3 meals daily. I am honestly worried about this as my taste buds have changed, I'm never hungry, and even when I try to eat, I get full after 2 or 3 bits. This surgery has completely changed my relationship with food. There are times when I think of enjoying a large bowl of pasta and chicken parmesan and feel sad, but that feeling is short lived when I look in the mirror or get on the scale and can say, the sacrifice was worth it. We can all do this!

    Iced Coffee

I sometimes luck out at Costco on the Salted Caramel. It's my favorite to mix with coffee. Omg it doesn't taste healthy at all. Premier Protein has a caramel flavor. I've never tried it tho, and I don't know if it's easy to find now.

    Iced Coffee

I do the exact same thing! I am not creative like these people who make all these yummy sounding drinks. haha I want to be, but don't. Also, I don't have or want time to play around in the morning before work. I would rather sleep. I am looking for other caramel protein drinks to try because Fairlife is impossible to find around me, or you pay 3x the normal price!

    Iced Coffee

I have iced coffee every morning. I brew the coffee a day ahead of time so it's cold for the next day... I use reusable Keurig pods. I fill it full with coffee grounds, and brew 4 oz, on the strong setting. Mix cold coffee with a cold salted caramel Fairlife protein shake & ice. Sometimes I add a splash of Jordan's sugar free salted caramel syrup. Sometimes I switch it up with vanilla/chocolate Fairlife and use the coordinating flavors of Jordan's sugar free syrups.

    Iced Coffee

I make cold brew coffee and mix it with vanilla almond milk, 1 scoop vanilla protein powder, 1 scoop chocolate protein powder, 1.2 banana, and 1 tsp. Cocoa Nibs., and ice. I blend it in my Nutribullet. It makes a really good smoothie and fills me up for quite a while. Occasionally I have cold brew mixed with milk and add a very small amount of stevia or monk fruit and sometimes sugar free coffee syrups (Jordan's or Torani). This is when I want a dessert coffee. Most of the time I prefer plain black coffee. Sent from my Pixel 5a using BariatricPal mobile app

    2 Weeks Post op

I was allowed rolled oats in purée but the instant version which is more processed. I made it on lots of milk & a serve lasted me days. I was also allowed scrambled eggs. Again thinned with extra milk. Think almost run off a spoon not plop/dollop thickness. The first few weeks can be challenging because your tummy can be sensitive & fussy. Some people experience temporary intolerances like to milk (try lactose free) too. Sometime you can eat something one day but the next day it’s no way. Plus your senses of taste & smell can go haywire temporarily. So things you enjoyed before taste or smell awful. I found soup easiest. Also boiled eggs mashed with Mayo & a high protein yoghurt. I tried puréeing lots of meats thinning them with gravies, stock, milk, ricotta, Mayo, etc. Personally, I found puréed tinned fish disgusting but chicken thigh meat with gravy was great. It took a few tries (& thrown out meals) to find out what my tummy & taste buds enjoyed.

    Iced Coffee

I make my own cold brew coffee and mix it half and half with a premier protein shake. It’s my breakfast every day.

Yes, with my BMI level and plan, I only have to do the 2 weeks pre-op diet and it consists of consuming 5 to 6 protein drinks per day. Each shake must fall within this range: 15 grams protein minimum, 5-15 grams carbohydrates, and to a max of 200 calories. 6 to 8 cups of water. I personally drink over 100 ounces of water a day so this is super easy for me. I am allowed an unlimited amount of SF jello, SF popsicles (not no sugar added), broth ( broth, bouillon, strained) and those can count towards my water intake. I have been testing several different shake recipes and am prepared to go onto the test liquid diet for one week. I wanted to lose 30 pounds before my surgery and I have "released" (trying not to use the lost because then my mind wants to find it) - so I have released 16 pounds so far. I'm hoping this will jump-start moving those last pounds prior. I will post here and tell you how the test is going

    Stop loosing WAY too early

People talk about stalls, the famous week 3 stall, then the 3 week stall. I actually am one of the few people that never saw a stall. My secret was being too large to weigh on home scales. For about the first year I could only weigh at my surgeon's office at monthly follow-ups. So, when your weigh-ins are a month apart, you don't see stalls. I can't express what a joy this was. I was never tempted to change anything in response to a stall. I just stayed with my program. My surgeon was never overly concerned with my weight loss. He asked how I was doing on the plan, how I felt, did I have any concerns. Weight never came up unless I brought it up. He was a cool Doc. Once I was able to weigh at home, I did it for a couple weeks, several times a day. Then I abandoned the whole concept and went back to just weighing at follow-ups. Who needs the angst? Even now, all these years later, I don't weigh at home, but only at my annual physicals at the Doctor's. One does not need a scale for success at WLS. Just trust your plan. My plan was also pretty straightforward. I didn't count calories, nor much of anything else. I counted meals of which there were 3 per day. I counted protein of where there were 3-4 oz each meal. That was basically my plan. That is still basically my plan. Good luck, Tek

You can also mix coffee with a protein shake. Or a lot of people use the torani sugar free syrups.

    How to cheat

I'm here to tell you all how to cheat Not that you need to know this. I had a family dinner last weekend in a fancy restaurant that only does a 7 course set tasting menu. I have panicked for weeks about this because none of my family know I've had surgery and I don't want them to (long story featuring lifelong judgementalness, LOL - I know that's not an actual word). I had hatched all sorts of plans where I hid food under other overhanging food, dropped it on the floor, and put it onto other people's plates when they weren't looking. Anyway - turns out I worried for no reason - all you have to do to cheat on your pouch is to reverse the rules you were given. So - if you drink before, during and immediately after a meal, and start with carbs and finish with protein (and leave some of that if you need to) you can virtually clear 7 small plates. Served me very well on Saturday night. I hope not to need that wisdom again for some considerable time.

    2 Weeks Post op

Wow, we have a stunning woman in our forum. Well done on your journey so far. Try a little boiled egg mashed with mayo. Try and find some protein yogurt you like, try it with mashed strawberry or other berry fruit. It helps the bowels. I had to resort to tinned soups with the bigger bits squashed with a fork. Many have mashed potato and gravy but it wasn't for me. Hummus is good especially if you can eat it with mashed avocado. I was allowed crispy melba toast as it melted in the mouth. You can always go back a stage if you are struggling, its your journey, just keep up your protein quota
  23. I seriously doubt they will say anything about your gain unless they specifically told you not to gain? Our weights fluctuate and they know that. My pre op diet wasn’t bad. I was allowed 2 shakes and then a lean protein low carb dinner (meat and veggies). Plus we had free foods like jello and pickles we could have if we just had to eat something. If I remember correctly we could chose between shakes and yogurt. And we were allowed to have broth. I didn’t love it but I wasn’t starving at all. Even if your is more strict because of your liver you just gotta keep your eye on the prize. I know I could do anything for a week or two in order to change my life for the better. And during that diet, if it gets a little touch check out the thread called “weirdest non scale victories” and see some of the changes you have to look forward to post surgery. Also, whenever you want to eat, hop on here and get talking. We are here to help you through it.

    Stop loosing WAY too early

Yep, just like they all said. It happens to all of us. Don't stress and don't obsess. If you follow your plan, stay in your calorie range, get in your fluids and proteins you WILL loose the weight.
  25. I doubt your team will berate you and if so I would consider a new team. (If possible) The entire reason you are there is because of the struggle. I believe every teams (surgeons) requirements are different. Mine had a "final" weight check it was the last time you were weighed before surgery would be scheduled. At that point in time you had to be close to where you started but some gain or loss was acceptable. BUT at that point up until your surgery day you could NOT gain weight. If you gained weight, your surgery would be rescheduled. My pre-op diet was technically 10 days but I did it for 14 days because I didn't want to start it over a weekend. I thought it would be easier while I was occupied at work. I was correct, by time the weekend came I was ok and got thru it pretty easily. I am sure it also has to do with what your pre-op diet allows. Mine was 4 protein shakes a day plus you were given a list of foods that you could eat up to 6 servings of each day. The ability to actually eat and chew made it easier for me. You will be fine, just put on your big kid pants and get determined! You can do anything with determination. Good luck!
