Also a fellow Aussie here from Nsw. I had the sleeve in 2017 but due to GERD and weight regain have had revision to bypass in dec 2020. I have zero regrets about my decision to have the revision, and since December have lost 20kg. (40kg from highest weight in 2017) All the best for your journey ! -
Sleeve revision and DS with Dr. Wilhelmy Mexicali Bariatric
NanaNanner posted a topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Hi all-been a long time since I've been on this board. I had my sleeve with Dr. Aceves in 2011 (?). Time has passed and I'm looking for a sleeve revision and DS. I searched Dr. Wilhelmy but couldn't find anything recent. Anyone been to him lately? I really loved my previous experience and decided to stick with them but would love to hear from anyone. -
Has anyone gone with Bypass due to GERD or for other reasons and now REGRET the decision ans wish you had chosen sleeve? Details please and thank you.

Same here. I have your problem. I don't know why I feel like Im always in a hurry? I think it is from having kids and always trying to get too many things done at once. I sometimes wish I'd gotten the sleeve, because this bypass stomach is so small, I can hardly get anything into it, -

It is interesting to see that sleeve's also have this. I am a bypass patient and wondered if this only happened to us. This is one thing, they never talked about in any of the classes. -
I had the sleeve early 2017. Due to GERD and weight regain I also had revision surgery to gastric bypass. My bypass revision was in dec 2020 and since then I’m down 20kg. (44 pounds) so very happy with my revision. Wishing you All the best!

6 months pre-op WL effect eventual possible total WL?
NovaLuna replied to greenchilegoddess's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was 389 pounds when I started my journey so I had a LOT of weight to lose. On top of that I'm also partially disabled due to two back injuries so I can't exercise beyond walking and right now even that is limited due to some other health issues, so for me I looked at the average percentage to make my choice because I knew I was pretty much relying on the average due to not being able to exercise much. Diet I can do, exercise not so much... VSG average is 50-70% loss of excess weight Gastric Bypass is 50-80% loss of excess weight Duodenal Switch/ Loop DS is 80-100% loss of excess weight So I went with the Loop DS. I chose it because it's the second most aggressive surgery (Traditional DS is #1) and chose the Loop DS because it's the new and improved version of the DS with the improvement being slightly more small intestines so less chance of diarrhea issues... (instead you have the occasional constipation issue lol). You can always lose more than the average. The average includes those that don't follow diet guidelines and don't lose much alongside those who lose way more than the average. The more weight you lose before surgery the better. I lost 68 pound myself during my six month program. I was 321 on my surgery day. I'm almost 13 months post op now and down to 197 (I haven't been under 200 pounds since I was 13... 20 years ago. I just got into ONEderland last week and I still want to cry because it doesn't seem real sometimes). The choice of surgery is a very personal thing. It's something that you have to live with so it's a choice that you have to make for yourself. If you are most comfortable with the VSG, then go for it! I wish you the best in your journey! -
Hiatus Hernia - Did removal help prevent acid reflux with sleeve surgery?
Blueslily posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello, I'm a newbie. I completed four months of the required weight management for my insurance to approve the surgery. I am scheduled for surgery in early April. I had the EGD a few weeks ago for my surgeon to look to see if there are any issues in my esophagus or stomach before surgery. I had already mentioned to him that one month prior, I had started burping and was worried that I was developing acid reflux. Since that was the only symptom, he said it could be anything and that his practice is to fix any hernias that they see during the same WLS to help prevent acid reflux later. He said that if I have acid reflux, he would be able to see it during the EGD. So, I did the EGD and he said he saw a small hiatus hernia. He said for me not to worry that he would fix it during the sleeve surgery and that will prevent acid reflux. I had asked him should I choose the bypass versus the sleeve due to the possible acid reflux. He said that since he is going to fix the hernia, I can still go with the sleeve if that is my preference. My question is to those who had a sleeve surgery and the hiatus hernia fixed at the time of the sleeve surgery, did that indeed prevent acid reflux for you? I really dont want to have a sleeve surgery now and end up with bad reflux and then need to do a revision. I was very direct with the surgeon about not wanting to have a revision later. Thanks! -

Hi there, I felt just like you, I really wanted the bypass because my reading had told me that bypass patients on average lose more weight and keep it off longer. So I was super disappointed when it turned out that there was a medical reason why I couldn't have the bypass (at least not safely). But I went forward with the sleeve and it all worked out for the best. The surgery has been very effective for me and I lost a lot more than that 70% average of excess body weight you read about. I lost it all. I know learning how to maintain it crucial, so that's what I'm focused on now. The best way to eat for long-term maintenance. So @catwoman7 is absolutely right. That 70% average is not a hard cap on how much you can lose with the sleeve. It's just an average based on outcomes they have tracked. I'd suggest you talk it out with your surgeon and get all the pros and cons to help you make your decision. Kind regards. 🤗 -

a couple of reasons - 1) I had GERD, and sleeve will often make that worse (although not always - and for a few people, their GERD actually improves). But there's about a 30% chance of it getting worse, and I didn't want to risk it. Bypass will often improve, if not outright cure, GERD. 2) when i had surgery in 2015, the sleeve was still kind of a new thing (at least as a standalone procedure. The duodenal switch (DS) surgery has been around for a long time, and that is a sleeve stomach combined with a largely-bypassed small intestine). But as a standalone surgery, sleeve was still pretty new in 2015. It's now taken the place of the lap band as the non-RNY option, and in fact I think it's more popular than the RNY now. But I was reluctant to go that direction because of it's new-ness at the time. I was afraid of it becoming "lapband 2". But....it's been around long enough at this point and his proven itself, so that wouldn't really be a concern of mine if I was having to make the decision today. 3) I wanted the malabsorption piece because I thought it would make it a bit easier to get all the weight off - although my surgeon did assure me that the difference between final weight of sleeve patients and bypass patients was pretty negligible, and that success is due more to commitment than it is to type of surgery. I would still choose the bypass today because of my GERD history, but if it weren't for that, I'm not sure. I've been super happy with my bypass, though. -

Thank you so much for such a thoughtful and detailed response! I'm also just an inch taller than you so we are very similar! I think I'm used to dropping a lot of weight the first month of a diet bc of "water weight" and then having things slow down, and sort of assumed that might be what the first month of post op is like (or might not be like if I already lost 70lbs). I also noticed you got gastric bypass in 2015. Do you mind me asking why you chose that over the sleeve? I originally went in wanting the bypass because of my terror of just hitting a wall and not losing after a certain point. My surgeon was open to it but suggested the sleeve since I'm young (28 at surgery time) and don't have GERD, so I've been leaning that way now. I just still have that nagging desire to do the thing that will give me the best shot at losing the most weight long term, and the malabsorbtive part of bypass is appealing for that reason. Also, I totally understand if that's too personal or involved! Happy to talk in DMs or not at all. You've been super helpful! -
Lack of support for post-op

Congratulations!!! It is life changing. I had a gastric bypass at 56 and sole guardian of 2 of my grandchildren. Who were 2 and 8 at the time. I have no family members where I live and friends were out of the question. My daughter who has a young family could only come up for 4 days, it worked out fine. Sore a little but not bad you need to move and walk so having responsibilities to make sure you do kinda helped me. The worst part for me was cooking and preparing meals when I felt sick just looking at it. And then when my daughter ordered pizza!!!! Lol my weakness but I wouldn’t. Good luck you got this! -

sleeve and bypass are different. With sleeve, they remove about 80% of your stomach. With bypass, they put a line of staples across your stomach (but don't remove it), which separates it so food only goes into the top part, meaning you can't eat as much. Then they move your small intestine up to the top part of your stomach (where the food is). The bottom part of your stomach just sits in there, unused (well, it technically makes some hormones which drain into your small intestine further down the route that help with digestion, I believe - but for lay person purposes, the lower part of the stomach just sits there dormant). supposedly weight loss surgeries do reset metabolism. The US society that many bariatric surgeons belong to is called the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Plus people with diabetes who get weight loss surgery often have their diabetes go into remission pretty quickly after surgery (especially with bypass - although this happens to a lot of sleevers, too), so that tells me that there's something other than weight loss that's going on to get it into remission so quickly. So yes - I think it does affect your metabolism as well (although admittedly, I'm not a doctor...) (however, you asked about metabolism changing after your lapband is removed - that I don't know) it took me 10 years to decide to have surgery, and in retrospect I should have done it years ago. One of the best decisions I've ever made! And no - no problems. It's been great! -

omg, you have lost heaps of weight.... you are 69 kilos from.........169 kilos. You are a new person. Congratulations for working so hard. A gastric bypass is a sleeve, isn't it? I'm getting very plump atm. Do you know if my metabolism change when the lap band is taken out? How long did it take for you to decide to get a gastric bypass? Have you had any problems? Ill be doing mine in September to get my tummy to heal for a good amount of time..... -
DUMPING SYNDROME
catwoman7 replied to DonnaMariaConsuela (MGB)'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've never had it. Supposedly about 30% of gastric bypass patients dump (some sleeve patients do, too, but the percentage is lower). It's usually caused by eating too much sugar, and for some people, too much fat. Unfortunately, I can eat either with no consequences (I saw "unfortunately" because that would definitely keep me from eating them!!) -

not many surgeons will place lapbands anymore - too many people have had complications with them years after surgery and had to revise to sleeve or bypass. So I agree revising to something else is a better option for you. -

I had my sleeve done Dec 2015 and am scheduled to have a bypass revision in. So 2021 my sleeve failed me as well I am nervous excited how about you -
I am only 62 but have been really happy with the results of my bypass. However... that said, I didn't realize that I would end up with so much wrinkled skin. I've been reading the forums for two years and haven't seen any other mentions of this outcome for older people. Without clothes, I look about 75. My dermatologist said that there's nothing that can be done -- I should just keep covered up. I'm probably an aberration since this isn't ever mentioned by posters and my surgeon said nothing about it.

February 2021 bypassers?
chiquitatummy replied to TreeTrunks's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Best of luck to everyone! I am actually having VSG, didn't realize I posted to a bypass thread until just now. Regardless, I'm glad to know my fellow WLS week peeps. We got this! -
I find it confusing too as my Ferritin has consistently been 6 even when my iron has been within normal range. Its hard for my digestive system to handle Iron supplements because of diverticulosis, and some unknown issue causing narrowing of the colon (and inflammation) even small amounts of iron constipate terribly, The only time my Ferritin when up a bit was when I had blood transfusion for surgery. I took a "non constipating" iron supplement lets just say it didnt live up to its claim. not sure how people do it. Or if theres possibly another cause of low ferritin unrelated to gastric bypass thats coincidental that compounds the issue.

Gastric Bypass- Pre op Clear liquid diet 2/23/21 surgery

I am 68 y.o., had Gastric Bypass 06/19. Lost 80lbs in approx 6 months. Didn’t exercise much. But felt so much more energy. My personal goal was to be able to get down on the floor (AND get up without help) so I could play with my grandchildren. AND to be healthy!!!! I had Arthritis, sleep Apnea, hypothyroidism. Now approaching 2 years post-op, I have gained 7 lbs which I swore to myself I would NEVER do. Getting depressed thinking the bypass is not working, etc. Happened to come across a book on Amazon written by 2 Dieticians who work with WLS pets. The Complete Guide to Weight Loss Surgery, your questions finally answered by Kaouk and Bashaw. It has helped bring me back to basics. As in slowing down to eat, chew slowly, do not drink while eating, eat protein first. Have been very stressed over this 7 lbs. My main issue has always been night time eating. Now I am excited to gain back control over my life once again. So glad to see other people who had their WLS at my age. We can do this!!!!
