Pureeing foods
fatontheinside replied to pvechiola's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wouldn't waste the money... You're not going to be on pureed foods that long anyway...only a few weeks so just use your blender. I might invest in one of those stick blenders/wands...the ones that stand up...but those are versatile... -
Ok I've been reading these boards a few weeks now and was struck with how many "aspiring evangelist" there are. I was thinking does something about this surgery make you want to go into ministry?? Was wondering if being a social worker was close enough...duh tonight it just hit me, its a level of how many posts you've posted LOL do I feel dumb. Oh boy.....now I am cracking up. Hope to make someone else laugh! Cathi

I'll share at 12 weeks out, And 50 lbs down, that the RNY is great! I have no regrets, and have not had a perfect road. No matter what WKS you go with, it is a tool. You will continue to have the desire to eat when not hungry. My recommendation is to get help. Support group, therapy, etc. because after your surgery, no matter which you choose, you will still have eating issues.

Rate of weight loss question
mem620 replied to amar63's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My experience has also been 1 or 2 pounds a week since restriction. I am happy with that. I still find myself wanting to have a bite of this and a bite of that and the band doesn't stop every habit. So be prepared for that and have some strategies to combat Snacks. I have a dumb question. How do you get the weight loss ticker to show on this site? I set one up on the ticker factory, but couldn't get it over onto my page. Mary -
Following: Does the doctor give recommendations/requirements based on BMI or something, or 6-month follow-ups? What happens at the 6-week, 3-month, 6-month follow-ups?

I understand depression is pretty common after bariatric surgery. I had a relatively mild bout with depression about six weeks out from surgery also. Seems odd, because we should be happy we're losing weight. But I think it's partly because we have a new normal and we're missing our "friend" -- food. We also can't eat much at that point because we're still healing. I didn't have any energy for the first couple of months either. Please talk to your physician about it -- you may be depressed or you may have a Vitamin D deficiency or something like that. But your physician should be able to determine that. The symptoms you describe definitely sound serious. Take good care of yourself and let us know how things are going ... Carol

Pre-op liquid diet for diabetics
molinomama replied to Picklesix's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am a type II diabetic on meds. I started my preop on Sunday. I was told to stop my Byetta the day I went to all clear liquids. I also take Lantus at night and I cut the dose in half and will taper it over the 4 nights preop. My blood sugars have been running between 75-85. They tell you to watch them close. If mine goes to low, I will drink some light apple juice or other low carb/cal juice. The big concern comes in after we start eating again, which for me is 4 weeks post surgery. Hopefully, by that point, I will have lost enough to stay off all meds or be greatly reduced:thumbup:. I encourage to ask alot of questions when you go to your preop - I was prepared to, and they had it all laid out on paper before I could start - clearly this is a common situation with banders. Good luck! -
Any other December 30th Bandsters to be???
poodles.me replied to Stephanka917's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh, my goodness this is going to be harder than I thought. I think trying to do this right at the holidays is like extra torture...I just made Cookies with my daughter and ate some..I'm really hungry today for some reason. I am almost in tears and its only day 2. I think if it were a normal work week etc. then it would be easier to distract myself. We're having a blizzard right now and watching movies... AH!!! what do I do? -
Any other December 30th Bandsters to be???
jackieva replied to Stephanka917's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am a December 31st. Bandster to be! I am Jackie from Florida. It stinks to be on the 2 week pre-op diet through the holidays and still keep everything "normal" for my sons and husband. Its torture with the cookies, gingerbread house, candies, etc. (of course they can and will eat everything in sight without gaining an ounce.) I think I will order in this Christmas, seriuosly, like Boston Market or Honey-Baked Ham. There is no way I can cook a Christmas dinner without snacking on it. We also decided not to travel so I can control what I eat. -
I was able to eat chicken breast at 4 weeks. I was told by my bariatrician to make sure to cook it to just done so it doesn't dry out. Then use sauces or gravies to help make sure it slides down easier. My favorite recipe is Greek chicken breasts. The marinade actually changes the texture of the chicken in a great way. It is low fat and delicious! marinade: 1/2 cup olive oil juice of 1 1/2 to 2 lemons 2 cloves of garlic pressed or minced 1 to 2 tablespoons of fresh oregano chopped Salt Pepper Mix it well, put it in a ziplock bag with the chicken breasts for minimum of one hour. The longer you let it marinade the better. You can even do it the night before. Then grill the breasts using either your outdoor, indoor grill or grill pan. Cook them to done, don't dry them out. They are awesome and the rest of my family loves them. I serve them with grilled zucchini or tiny Greek salad.

Although my surgery is 3 weeks away, I love reading the questions and answers posted here. Thank you and glad you are feeling better. Thank you so much for the recipe, I've saved it for down the road.

PRE-OP Dieting...Need Advice
RestlessMonkey replied to birdbrainzz's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, I lost 32 pounds in, um, 37 days, by doing "my" preop diet for 3 weeks (lost 15) and then my surgeons (which I should've done from the start) for another 2 1/2 weeks (17 more pounds). BUT i started very high at 405. Just do what your doc says, not what you read, or think you "should" do, don't cheat, and you'll be fine! -
Swimming, Bathing and Mederma

3 weeks out and my dr told me yesterday to enjoy the pool. My incisions have all closed up, so there is no chance of infection -
Mine seems actually a bit backwards... my insurance company didn't require the Psyc. Evalv., but my DOC did. So, my Psyc. Evalv. is scheduled a week and a half after the insurance has already approved me. Then, they have to get the results back, which can take up to a week, before they will even schedule my surgery. So, we are looking at about a month after insurance has already approved by the time I get a date. It is frustrating, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Mayo Clinic-Rochester,MN visit
long2bethin replied to Mary Kelly's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
I see this was back in Jan. so I might be to late to be helpful, but I had my surgery done at Mayo a week ago. We actually live here so use Mayo as our primary care. It's a very long process through Mayo, I can tell you that. I don't know how they do it with out of town people but we have to go through a 12 week learn group before they start the pre surgery appointments and there are a few of those you have to complete. If you have any questions still you certainly can message me though, I will try to help if I can. -
Wgbem, I have been pretty steady (2-3 pounds a week). I have had a couple weeks of gain and a couple weeks of maintaining. You just keep doing what you are supposed to do, change up your exercise a little and it starts again. I have really concentrated on more exercise, 1 to 1 1/2 hours each day.

Hi I'm Nena and I'm from Beaumont. I was banded in Houston by Dr. Michael Storey. I like him. When I went for my surgery THREE of the nurses had been banded by him and absolutely LOVED him! Isn't that funny? So no jitters for me. Oh poor Lufkin girl, I bet all my fellow Beaumontonians are flooding your town. Ol' Gustav is running everyone off! I looked up my doctor on the internet, checked to see if he'd had any lawsuits filed against him, looked for blogs about him to find honest opinions. Sorry I don't have anymore suggestions for you. I got banded this past Sunday and am feeling pretty good so far. Good Luck to you!

what do you eat before the surgery
RestlessMonkey replied to marmar's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I hear you. I weighed 405 and at 5'5" and 53 years old, i was pretty miserable! Can't fix the age or height LOL but every pound that goes is not missed! I lost a bunch on my preop diet; it was like I was a new person. I will tell you this one very important thing I wish I'd known....DO WHAT YOUR SURGEON TELLS YOU. This is a great site and I post here a lot! BUT....the anecdotal info doesn't replace your surgeon and his team. I cheated on FIRST preop diet because I read poster after poster who did and got away with it (Didn't know why mine was 3 weeks, either, when others only had to do 2 weeks or 1 week or 3 days or none!) SO I lost 15 pounds "my" way, not following docs orders, and my liver was too thick. That is RARE! But I learned a valuable lesson I like to share (it helps make it worth it LOL) and that is...read stuff here, take it with a grain of salt, and do what your doctor tells you to do. I don't think any single soul here would intentionally mislead or misguide, we're a pretty helpful bunch...but what works for one doesn't work for the rest of us. We may all be getting "a" band, but they are different, the docs are different, and WE are different! You'll do great! -

What is your pre op diet? Do you have to do 2 weeks of liquids? I wonder if this varies based on patient size. -
Newly Banded--Similar Pain Anyone?
cindyg1212 replied to tommaney's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi fellow new banders, I was banded last week, 11/1. The gas pains the first few days were excrutiating. The vicodan was the only thing that worked. Question tommaney, are you taking prevacid pills or did you find chewables? My doc said not to try to swallow anything bigger than a tic tac ever. But I've been finding that he is stricter than a lot of the other doctors. -
Limbo-time before surgery
wanabthin replied to Bandwagon's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Let me just say that if I had to wait two months for surgery, I would have probably gained about 30lbs! Once I had my consultation and the surgery was scheduled, I had 4 weeks until I had to start the preop diet so in my head I was thinking, "might as well eat now, I won't be able to for 6 weeks" so I ate anything/everything and gained 10lbs! The good thing was I lost 9 of it during my 2 week preop diet, the surgery went great and I am down another 3lbs since Friday. I think a lot of us go on pre surgery binges but look at it logically, if we didn't have issues with food to begin with, we wouldn't need the band. Just try to keep in mind the more you put on the more you have to take off. On the other hand, I had pretty much had all my favorites and while the preop diet was HARD, the postop had been fairly easy. Best of luck! -
I'm one week pre-op away from surgery and yes I am a little nervous... not about the band, just about the surgery itself. Stuff like, what if they find something else wrong while doing the surgery.. or what if there is some awful complication during the surgery. As far as the failure rate, I look at it this way... other than some major reason like my body rejecting the band, the success is up to me. It's my decision what and how much food I put into my body, I control my diet not the band. To use an weightlifting term, the band is just there as a "spotter" for me.... in case a try to do too much! Every one has there own way of using the band... that is just how I am planning to use mine. Best of luck in your journey!!!!!!

Has anyone here had a leak and how soon did you find out? How many weeks post op were you?
-
You might want to lower your expectations? 1-2 lbs average per week is normal. 10 lbs is above average imo.
