  1. I think in most cases you will always get an answer from the nurse, that errors on the side of caution. first not every pill can be crushed (entric coated, time released etc) so saying you need to crush every pill is silly. I would say to split the pills that are long, such as Calcium pills, but most sizes of round pills are fine for just about every. also keep in mind that you dont even have any Fluid in your band so the odds of getting stuck are slim. If you do need to crush your pills now ( while the swelling in your stomach goes down) then rest assured that you wont have to do it forever. I will tell you my diet progression, but every doctor is different. I think mine advances diets a bit more slowly then some others that I have heard, but again better safe then sorry. week one - Clear Liquids only ( only approved non see through item was Protein shakes) week two- week 1 foods + full liquids ( Jello, cream Soup, etc) week three - week 1 &2 foods + soft foods ( cream of wheat, pudding, mashed taters, hummis, cottage cheese etc) week four - weeks 1,2 &3 foods + non red meat Proteins ( fish, chicken, shrimp, lobster, crab etc) week five - weeks 1,2,3 & 4 + fruits and veggies advoiding uncooked veggies until well tolerated week six - weeks 1,2,3,4 & 5 + red meat, Pasta, bread, and rice - be careful with these foods, try them in small amounts one at a time until you know how u will tolerate them. **NEVER FOODS** carbonated beverages & gum that was it. good luck and if you are unsure of anything call your doctor or nutritionist

    Down 31 lbs.

First Congrats! 31pounds is awesome. Then Second, I lost 10 pounds on the pre op diet and then another 10 pounds the week after surgery and it never came back. So most likely you will keep it off! Good Luck with everything!
  3. Try not to be discouraged and remain positive and committed to this lifestyle change that you have entered into. The band is only an aid to weight loss though and we each must do our part in order to make it successful. Every doctor is definitely different. I was on liquids for a full six weeks post-op. As for pills, the bariatric coordinator at my surgeon's office advised of the need to crush what could be crushed and to substitute liquid medicine options where possible for other meds at our preliminary visit a good six months prior to surgery. It was at that same visit that I was given a document with dietary guidelines that outlined what foods would be difficult if not impossible to include in a post-band diet plan. I'm grateful for receiving that information early on and wish that other physicians would share at that same level. Good luck.

    2 Little ones

Oh Lizzy, you definitely need to have either someone there to help you or have them stay elsewhere. I too have two little ones - they were 3 months and 2 and half at the time of surgery and I had to have my husband there. I thought I would be fine to have my son in hospital with me (who I'm breastfeeding) but boy was I wrong. I also bounced back quickly from childbirth etc but I found myself in a lot of pain afterwards and by trying to do too much too soon, I actually made it worse - the gas pains in your abdomen and shoulders are the worst. You could be fine as some people are but you also may find that you are on painkillers for at least a few days and a bit sore and sorry for yourself as I was. Once a week had passed I was fine and now know it was the best thing I have done but I had my husband there 24/7 to help out. Make sure you get some help and congrats on being banded.

    Emotions

@@L.Harmony - I totally agree with @@Yaberhoo - you need to breathe, and breathe deep. Contact your doctors office and see about taking an OTC for sleep, Melatonin or Tylenol PM? You had surgery about 5 weeks ago - did your doctor tell you that you would lose ___lbs by this date ____? I doubt it. We all lose at different rates. Stay focused on hydrating and Protein and get your sleep cycle closer to normal. Keep a bottle of Water with you at ALL times, sip. Set a timer/clock/cell phone to alarm every two hours and check your water intake to keep you hydrated. Eat protein FIRST. You work in corrections, according to your profile, so I don't know if your schedule is rotated. Lack of sleep, plus the hormone flush, we go thru early out can make you feel really "pissy" or overwhelmed <breathe>.

    Oh My.....

How far are you out? If youre 6 weeks out, I personally think you should try it if you want. the first time I tried it, I was 6 weeks out, it hurt me and it tasted way too sickly sweet. I dont have any desire to try it again after that

    Opinions?

I'm going to be extremely extremely honest here. This is actually going to be really hard for me to say. I think the weight loss surgery can change the relationship in both good and bad ways. I've seen/heard a lot of people break up or get divorced after the surgery and I wondered why. I'm only 2 months post op and having relationship issues and I'm starting to have an epiphany. Do I love my boyfriend? YES. However, now that i'm losing the weight and gaining my confidence back...sometimes I ask myself, was I settling for less than what I deserve because I didn't think I could find better? Did I let my weight and my body determine how I should be loved for the last three years and accept things I didn't deserve in the relationship because I thought I was not worthy of better love because, who would want me? My boyfriend thinks I will leave him once I get thinner. I had a friend who had the surgery years before me and told me "don't let a man keep you fat to keep you around". So when my boyfriend tells me I don't need to lose more weight, her words come into my mind...maybe he wants me bigger so that I don't leave...My hormones are also going crazy right now since surgery and I'm emotional and crazy some days and we fight so hard that i'm just emotional drained and exhausted and don't have the energy to fight for my relationship some days. On the other hand, this surgery has done some good for my relationship as well. Each time my boyfriend notices my body is changing and I'm getting a little smaller, the way he looks at me...with pride, and love and appreciation and always tells me how beautiful I am and am becoming...it makes me happy. He saw my strength after surgery and how brave I was. I think he's falling in love with me even deeper than before after my weight loss surgery, however, I don't know if I can say the same. There's days where we are so connected and I am so freaking in love with the man, and then there's other days where I feel like walking away. There were issues before the surgery but I think i'm now opening up my eyes as I'm coming into my new skin and just don't want to accept the sh*tty things for the rest of my life. We deserve happiness. We deserve unconditional love. We deserve the absolute best. Our sizes shouldn't determine the size of happiness we think we should get.
  8. My bariatric team has been reviewing my chart for nearly 2 weeks. I emailed my patient coordinator asking how long it normally takes for them to review it. She messaged me back saying there is no time limit. How long did it take your team to review and approve your chart so it can be sent to your insurance?

    For Life?

Once you start on solids, usually around the 5 week mark, You should be trying your best to get your protein from food, not shakes. My surgeon was very persistent with this and I'm so glad he was. As long ad you can tolerate chicken, Tina, fish etc I say go for it and only have a shake if needed. It really helps with getting your sleeve used to more and different foods as well.

    Excited, Sad, what next?

I didn't tell my husband or my family that I was having surgery until 2 weeks before. I did not want any opinions or negativity. It was my decision for my body. We were told in one of the pre surgery classes the less people you tell the better off you are. Everyone will not be happy for you especially if they are overweight. Some will say "you took the easy way out". Ha! This is not easy. Now my husband is so happy with his "new" wife and my kids are so proud of their "new" mother. I am having sooo much fun shopping for smaller younger looking clothes. This surgery is the best thing I have ever done for myself. Prayers for you that once your surgery is over your relationship with your husband will improve. He maybe afraid or just feeling insecure. Hang in there. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  11. Hi Yes I felt the same way, what did I do. You do need to walk and it does get better I promise. To bad you had to go back to work so soon. I was still on pain meds. until the second week. Things got better. Now I feel great a little sore if I bend to the right where the port is. I am having trouble eating solids, sometimes my stomach just doesnot want it. So I went back on liquids 2x a day. I am still bloated after drinking or eating.
  12. Hi....future bander here (figure in about 6 weeks or so). I see people talk about their "shoulder hurting"....exactly where IS the port anyway? I kindof figured it would be up under my boob or something.:phanvan

    What have I done??? yikes

It will pass, I promise. I went to work the Monday after having surgery on Friday. I was a mess. I did it, but it was stupid to do. You will feel better, I promise. For me it was 4 weeks before I was 100% normal, energy wise.

    Help Me Dig Deep

Simple carbs are the enemy, but complex carbs are "good" carbs that can be very beneficial, especially if you're working out so consistently! The following are some examples of complex carbs. Of course, you need to take into account where you are in terms of food stages and what you can tolerate. At 7 weeks out, some of the examples below may not work for you yet or may be too hard to digest (do some research before you try all of them!). Whole Grains - millet, oats, wheat germ, barley, wild rice, brown rice, buckwheat, oat bran, cornmeal and amaranth. Fruits - apricots, oranges, plums, pears, grapefruits and prunes. Vegetables - Broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, turnip greens, eggplant, potatoes, yams, corn, carrots, onions, all types of lettuce, celery, cucumbers, cabbage, artichokes and asparagus Legumes - lentils, kidney Beans, black beans, peas, garbanzo beans, soy beans and pinto beans
  15. My doctor mentioned to me at my appt this week that I should consider lapband. I went to the library to find more information and was disappointed to find that most books focused on gastric bypass, and there was very little on lapband. Anyone have suggestions on reliable books to peruse before I pursue this? FYI..I attended an orientation about 3 years ago for gastric bypass, when I decided that it really wasn't an option for me.

    surgery tomorrow!

Thanks for the kind words Chimera! That six months really dragged for me, right up till last week. Now it seems so fast! I am so glad I went through my insurance though. It takes a load off knowing if something goes wrong, it will just be my co-pay. Lynda
  18. Greetings fellow sleevers! I am one month post op. All of my surgery pain has gone away but a little over a week ago I started having a terrible sharp pain down below my belly button. Its not the really sore surgery pain that we all felt on our left sides. It feels different. Like if I move a certain way someone stabs me down by my belly button with a red hot knife. Makes me gasp and grab for my belly out of instinct to the pain. When I wake up on the morning it is better but by the end of the day it is really intense. Has anyone else experienced this? Yes, I have spoken to my surgeon but he just said to wait and see if it gets better. Its been over a week and so far it isnt a bit better. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using the BariatricPal App

    Doing the happy dance .......

Yeah!!!! I am so happy for you. I was just looking at my Upper GI CD and was wondering how your week went -- I can see it was a good one! congrats
  21. I am from the Minneapolis area. I will be having my surgery done at Park Nicollet. Thus far, I highly recommend their program. They are very efficient and on top of things. The do RNY, VSG and bands and they can give you good information on all three. Here is their website: http://www.parknicollet.com/bariatrics/. You start the program by going to an info session which is given by a nurse clinician and a surgeon. Most of the nurses their have had bariatric surgery so they know what you are going through. Hopefully that helps you a little bit.

    Traveling

I was in the hospital three days, came home on the morning of the 4th. Although I didn't have a revision, I had a complicated hernia repair as well as the sleeve. I was tired but fine to fly on the 4th day. I had no nausea and little pain post-op. My suitcase had wheels and I did not pack too much so I could lift it into the overhead bin. From what I hear, Dr. Aceves is an experienced band to sleeve revision surgeon. I had my surgery three weeks after I decided it was what I wanted.

    4 weeks Post op

It is amazing how great you start to feel after the surgery. I was skeptical too at first but it was the best decision i have ever made. I am 6 weeks post op and have lost 40 lbs. I feel better than i have in years. My kids are proud and my boyfriend is too. But to him it doesnt matter cause like you he has been with me from the start. Good luck to you and keep up the good work.
  24. Ok, I was just getting ready to post about gas. I have been having a lot of problems with my eating due to the gas. I've posted before regarding this and more or less was told that its not gas that is causing my problems. My last dr apointment was right before thanksgiving, and the dr took out .5 cc. I was doing really good and amost no pb'ing for about a month. Then all of a suddent I was pb'ing almost daily. It got soo bad. This last Saturday I couldn't even get down Water. I was scard that the band had slipped. During this week, I lost 1 pound each day. Almost all of my symptoms were similar to a band slip. So Monday, I went to the Dr. They looked at my band under flouro and it was fine, then she moved the flouro down a bit and you could see the HUGE gas bubble filling up my entire lower stomach. This is the 2nd time we've see this under flouro (last time was 2 months ago). I do burp a lot when I eat, but I can't tell when gasy. I have been taking extra strength gas-x about 6 pills a day and it would help for a couple hours and then I would start having the same problems again. The doctor took some of my fill out. I was at 7cc in a 10cc band, which I think is pretty close to my sweet spot. But since I have had soo much problems with the gas, we took out .5 so I have time to recover and get rid of teh gas. Now I can eat almost like I did before being banded. My doctor says when I have that much gas, the gas is pushing up on the band and the food has no place to go, that's why I can't eat or even get water down. So now I have to figure out how to control the gas. I have been reading what types of food causes gas and I really don't eat any of thoes foods. I did find a dietary supplement that is to help stop gas before it starts that I have started taking daily. Also I switched from gas x to mylanta to see if that helps.

Can't lose this last 4 lbs

Take a multi-vitamin, an extra B12, and a calcium citrate plus D3, vitamin. Drink three protein shakes a day ( I used Premier Protein from Costco), have a lettuce and veggie salad at night with low-no carb dressing. Drink 62 oz of water a day. If you need more, heat up Pacific Coast Bone Broth (9 grams of protein per serving). Eliminate carbs, low/no fat. I lost 13 lbs in three weeks. This was my pre-op diet as prescribed by my nutritionist. Premier Protein has 30 grams of protein, 1carb, and 165 calories per shake. Others might lose more/less. Good luck!
