Apple and almonds? That's actually pretty tough on your stomach. I wasn't allowed apples or nuts until almost 3 months post-op. I had sleeve though, not bypass, and I know some of the guidelines are different. How do you do with Greek yogurt? Cottage cheese? Scrambled eggs? Were you throwing up in your puree stage or just once you moved onto solid foods?
  2. Hi everyone. I've been lurking in the shadows of this group for a few weeks now and finally decided that I should introduce myself. I've been amazed to learn all the stories of the brave people in this group. I'm just going to the informational seminar this next Friday so I'm really, really new to all of this. I know that I need some help with my weight and am hoping that WLS is the answer. My questions to you all: 1. if you had it to do over again, would you still choose the band over the bypass or other surgeries? 2. what has been the hardest part of the WLS, what has been the easiest? 3. what is the one thing that has helped you be successful? It's funny, I read all these posts (here and on Strugglingbandsters) about people being unhappy with thier slow weightloss. From my perspective sitting here in no-band land ANY weightloss is a gift. I guess it's all in your expectations. Well, thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences. I look forward to getting to know you all. Megan from Minnesota
  3. Thank you to each and everyone that replied. Like Alexandra I was told by my doctor that I could eat or drink anything that I could tolerate. It was only in my research that I found that carbonated beverages could cause medical problems and I wasnt sure if this information was directed to all gastric patients or bypass patients specifically. Of course I wouldnt go through the surgery and not follow the rules which is why I was inquiring. Thanks again for the information. Tied2BeFit

    Minnesota Folks-Where are you?

Hey!!! I have been poking around this site for over a year now and it's amazing to me how quiet us Minnesotans are! I am in the Golden Valley/Crystal/New Hope Area. I would love to know if there is anybody out there near me. A by-weekly get together would be amazing. I haven't told anyone except my husband that I have a lapband so just having "partners in crime":cool2: would be really cool. I have really struggled. I lost a lot fast and then stopped losing over the summer. I was having absolutely no restriction....well a port revision and two fills later, I am FINALLY starting to understand about the sweet spot and how I am getting closer! So to those struggling it will get better! For a little bit there I was really questioning what I had done to myself. I had my surgery in St. Louis Park with Dr. Wetherill. I really like him. ~A
  5. Yes, it worked initially, I'm 3 1/2 years out and got down to 142 and stayed there until about a year ago. It was amazing!! I've since gained back almost 35 pounds and having terrible GERD. I have a history of esophageal strictures with dilations, and the sleeve has made it much worse. I got approved for the mini bypass as few days ago. BMI of 29 with comorbidities.

    September Sleever

Woohoo, September 7th for band to sleeve revision for me.
  7. Overall, I think most studies show there's a 5-15% re-surgical rate with the band. That includes port revisions, leaky tubes, erosions, dilations etc. It is a little higher than the other three WLS techniques. Here's a video that makes a lot of sense by a well known bariatrics surgeon. How he helps his patients decide. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VmvWFu79Ik#t=99

    A little worried

There's no way to know. The odds of needing a revision whether it be complications, reflux, etc. is fairly low, but it still does happen. Can't avoid the risks. Just do what you can to mitigate any complications that could be caused by yourself. I have moderate reflux (GERD) and am going with 3 surgeons' advice to get the VSG done, with a revision option a year down the road (I believe it would be more like 2 or 3 but we'll see) to RNY. I too worry about getting worse reflux and the staging of esophageal damage but generally people can also take PPI's to help mitigate this by default.

    Curious

I don't even know where to begin....it is really completely different for me. With the band, i felt like I lost weight because I struggled to eat. I couldn't eat because things got stuck. It was like being "choked off." I wasn't satisfied, so I found ways to eat around the band and ultimately had to have it unfilled and removed due to reflux. With the bypass, I lost weight simply because I have a small stomach that fills up quickly and I am satisfied sooner. That is what the band was supposed to do as well, but never did for me. I can eat anything, don't dump (not certain that is such a good thing!) and honestly enjoy eating even more than before any WLS. I enjoy good food in small quantities. Keeping my fingers crossed it works this time! Remember - you didn't fail the surgery. It failed you!
  10. Didn't have much of a problem with the pre-op diet and actually don't mind the shakes. But was looking forward to eating actual food after bypass. Had my two month post op appointment yesterday, have 38 lbs to lose and I'm to continue with protein and water, no carbs, no veggies, no fruit. UCK. Thanksgiving I'll only be able to have meat. This is really a challange. About the only thing I can say positive I don't mind the different flavor of shakes I make, but I'm not going to ever crave shakes again in my lifetime, once this is over.

    Drinking wine after surgery!

My brother in law had gastric bypass surgery. He lost 170lbs. Did pretty good until he started drinking wine again then he has put a good bit of weight back on. I think its a very slippery slope. I personally have gone through way too much to let something hinder me at this point. Wine has a lot of sugar in it. Which is nothing but carbs.
  12. My surgeon commented that the sleeve surgery now is like the boob jobs in the '80's!! Everyone seems to be getting the sleeve but for many of us gastric bypass is the way to go!
  13. Hi, I'm in Pensacola too. I was supposed to have my surgery with Dr. Lord but insurance wouldn't approve. I ended up having bypass in Mexico on June 20th Sent from my BE2028 using BariatricPal mobile app

    MGB vs. RNY

There is much more data for RNY. The malabsorption is relatively minor as far as calories, but since the duodenum is bypassed, there is a need for lifelong supplementation for most people. People get deficiencies years and years out. I don't know why your surgeon said that, maybe some people are able to reduce supplements later on, but i was told I will always need to take supplements. Since the mini bypass hasn't been well studied, I don't know if it could be said definitely it causes more malabsorption (I read that it might), but from what I read the weight loss is as good or better as RNY, but variable lengths of the intestine are bypassed (2-6 feet I think). So all minis might not be the same. As far as weight loss, it is more that just calorie restriction for most of the surgeries except for band. The surgeries change hormonal regulation, and they reduce appetite and might even change the metabolic set point. The actual hormonal mechanism of weight loss isn't well defined, but some models show a hormonal pathway is necessary for the surgery to be successful. Reducing the amount of hormones produced by the body of the stomach, either by removing or bypassing it, is how RNY and VSG work. The DS has this component too. It is hard to quantify how much is what, but without the hormonal component as well as restriction, the malabsorption is probably not enough on its own. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  16. Do not blame your food cravings on emotional issues, Bostonmama. A good non-surgeon bariatric specialist can evaluate to see if medications or surgery revision is needed. Please do not beat yourself up for the cravings. Your struggles may be as much physiological as psychological and can be addressed by the right medical specialist. Yes, see a nutritionist and psychologist but there are a lot of experienced, talented obesity specialist medical doctors in the Boston area.
  17. I think those are excellent questions to ask. I'm currently preparing for a conversion from sleeve to bypass . . . not because of weight loss issues, I'm maintaining a 120 lb loss 2 years post surgery, but because of GERD uncontrolled by medication. At one of my appointments, I asked my surgeon to draw out the procedure to explain how it will eliminate my GERD and reverse the damage to my esophagus. He did, and it was amazingly helpful. ( I have that drawing hanging up in my office . . . my bit of modern art.) Anyway, I think it's beneficial to everyone to ask pointed, precise questions so they understand what is being done to their anatomy.
  18. One of the surgeons in the clinic I am using is adamant that they are seeing more issues with weight regain after sleeve compared to bypass. I have not been able to find any research to back this up. Any help would be appreciated as I have my mind wrapped up in the sleeve surgery not the bypass. Thanks in advance

Lap band January 2019 surgery date

I’m bypass would never have considered band & my surgeon said in 3013 they were considering taking them off market due to slippage.

    Oh the doubts!

I love, love, love my sleeve. Granted, my BMI was low compared to some others, but I have more than a few friends that have had bypass surgery. All but one (and she has had it most recently) have had substanstial regain. I have a 32 bougie, 85% of my stomach was removed FOREVER. I know if I had not made changes BEFORE sugery....I.E. grazing mainly, I would not have been as successful as I've been as quickly, but I don't possibly see how I could have the regain that my bypass friends have. (COULD WE TIFF??) Anyway, that's my two cents worth!!! All doctors have their opinions and bypass is STILL considered the gold standard of WLS, but I think that will end. I personally think that as DRASTIC as DS is, it would be considered the gold standard, I don't EVER hear about those folks regaining, but then again, you don't really run across many people going to that extreme very often. I know of one, and it is a co-worker of a friend. Good luck....and don't give in, find another doctor if need be. Do what FEELS right to YOU.

    Oh the doubts!

My Sister types for doctors and she had the Gastric bypass. When I asked her about the Sleeve she said she wishes she would have done the Sleeve instead of the Bypass. She has had a lot of problems with her bypass....gallstones, kidney stones...leakage and had to be cut open. She has gained a lot back...not as big as she was but she has gained. She had her surgery three years ago. She said the doctors in her area are leaning more for the Sleeve now because of the success they are seeing and less complications. I would suggest you read as much as you can! I'm sure you can google pros and cons! I haven't had my surgery yet but I'm EXCITED to be SLEEVED in December! My doctor told me....He will give me the TOOL to lose weight but it will be up to ME to use it correctly! SO, if you are Sleeved or Bypassed it will be up to you to keep off the weight. GOOD LUCK!!!!

    Off the wagom

Hi, I had gastric bypass and am 8 yrs out. I was at 245 lbs and had gotten down to 115 lbs. I was told I was to low and had to introduce more carbs to my diet. Once I opened that door there was no turning back. My "dream" weight is 127 lbs. I was that for a little over a year. I was going to support group meetings and was doing very well. Then my work schedule changed and I could no longer make it to my monthly meetings. Slowly my weight is creeping back up and presently I am 147 lbs. I know it is from what I am eating. Clearly it is from Chocolet. Yes I am a chocaholic. I know the amounts I can have to not get dumping. I need to get back on track. I do attend weight watchers but points system not working out very well for me. Going to start back to basics. Wish me luck

    Bye bye band

I had my band removed and revised to the sleeve but had to wait 6 weeks before the doctor would sleeve me. I was afraid I would gain weight although I had already done that with the band. I didn't gain any weight in fact it felt like I still had the band. I trust my surgeon. So if he said I need to wait then I needed to wait even if I didn't like it. I knew a lot of people that were had their band removed and sleeved same day. My surgeon told me my stomach needed time to heal.

    Knee pain and sleeve

I was told 10 years ago I needed replacement and look into bariatric surgery. I did not want a bypass at the time. I regretted not doing this sooner cause I would have been like most people...weight comes off pain goes away. I waited to long.

    Here I go again!

Why did your surgeon opt for sleeve instead of bypass if you have such bad reflux issues?
