  1. Hi all. So I've spoken with 3 people I know that have had gastric bypass and they said that they did not exercise at all and still lost weight. One of them lost 80 pounds in 10 months. Why do sleevers have to exercise to lose? What is the difference between the two? Not making excuses, just want to know why?

    Sleeve vs. Bypass

Studies show that weight loss is more rapid with bypass in the first year, however, by year two, weight loss from the sleeve is the same as bypass. As OutsideMatchInside said, weight loss is 80% diet and 20% exercise. Once you've reached your weight loss goal, those numbers flip when you go into maintenance mode. Here's something I've heard from weight loss veterans...If you think losing the weight is hard, get ready. Maintenance is 10X harder.
  3. I am still pretty nervous about the whole thing in general. I am a nurse, so a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Surgery always seemed like such a sell out for me, personally. My sister had gastric bypass and looks horrendous. Hair loss, skin sagging and generally unhealthy. On the flipside, my sister in law had the LB and looks phenomenal. I don't even know if my insurance will pay for this procedure, so that is another subject. The one thing that seems to bother me is the lump that you can feel just under the skin (the port?). My sister in law let me feel it, and I have to admit, it creeps me out a bit. I would be excited to put weight gain behind me once and for all. I am so frustrated with yo yo dieting, and all the strenuous psychological and physical work that I have put in over the years.
  4. Revision surgery is a different world. It's not horrific pain that you cannot tolerate, it's just more discomfort than with virgin banding. You'll see. ;o)

    Help!!

I was also confused on what to do. I was 319 before I had my lap band. And I love my sweets. But I have a couple of friends who had Gastric Bypass done and I knew it was not for me. I dont know if that is the same thing you are looking into or not. But I know for me the band was the best choice. I am losing slowely now. But I have had no complications and feel better then ever. I just did not want to have to deal with all the side effects and complications that can come from the other surgery. But it is a very important decision. Good luck to you on what ever you choose.

    RNY surgery question

I haven't heard that, but who knows? It might be true. I know bypassers are susceptible to vitamin deficiencies, though, because of the malabsorption. That's why it's critical for us to keep on top of our supplements - the consequences of slacking off are more severe for us than they are for sleevers. EDITED TO ADD: I'm not really sure about fasting in general, though. I know the malabsorption the first few months is super strong - you malasorb calories in addition to nutrients. Unfortunately, the malabsorption of calories seems to go away after a year or two - whereas the malabsorption of nutrients stays. I had a 20 lb regain in year 3 (which is unfortunately very common - usually 10-20 lbs), and I currently struggle to keep my weight where it is, so the part of fasting where you lose weight isn't true - or at least not for me. But maybe he meant for the first year or two? Or was referring specifically to nutrients ? Not sure.

    Glass of wine...

Some of the worse ulcers ever were at the anastomosis of a gastric bypass patient who started drinking a little wine again - 14 year post op!!!! Many others, as well. Those surgical tissues remain fragile forever, I'm thinking. Alcohol is a terrible irritant to tissue of any kind, but for surgical areas, even worse. Everyone makes their own decisions and takes their own risks, but for me, alcohol is on the "never again" list.

    Bariatric Cook Book?

Bariatric Cookbook and Meal Plan Megan Moore, spiral. Gastric Sleeve Bariatric Bible 2022 William Torres. (Even though I had bypass not sleeve). 7 weeks post op and I've gone back to them once a week.
  10. While I'm not a human nurse, I am a LVT (licensed veterinary technician). I work ER , 10 hours shifts. I rarely get a real break. I'm not sleeved yet, but I do have band currently (which I hope to be revising in June). That is the real hard part for me. I don't get to sit down to eat. My surgeon is like you have to sit down for at least 20 minutes to eat. It's the law. Yeah sure, when we are slammed and pets are crashing, I'll get right on that. Which is I think the problem is why I graze at work. This is something I have to work on.
  11. Did you have bypass or sleeve surgery? You look great!

Are we allowed to share how psych evaluation go?

I had already done one before and I wasn’t treated like that you should never be treated that way ever and now I’m in the process of maybe if having to have the complete bypass done and she has her own in house one who isn’t like that at all! I am so sorry you went through it it’s hard enough to take this road everyone thinks it’s the easy way out but the truth is it’s NOT it’s far from it!

    2 step revision

I am a 2 step revision. My band was placed in 2010 and was a problem from the start. My surgeon is removing it this week. We will wait 12 weeks for things to heal and revise to bypass in June.
  14. It's protein loss, some banders get it but almost all RNY patients lose hair. I have several friends that have had bypass and swear by biotin.

    What was your turning point?

I realized I was finally ready to get serious August 18 2005. I have tried sooo many diets lol Dr Abkin had to laugh at my 1st visit.I was not always FAT but always had bad eating habits.Anyway I was leaning toward the bypass until on futher research I discovered banding.August 18,2005 my mother was killed in a car crash on her way home from church(not really so bad since it was her favorite place to be )My mom was a big lady in everyway(size, heart and spirit). They told me at the hospital that because of her size they had to work longer and harder to cut her from the car:cry Knowing how I felt/feel I decided to try to spare my children the thoughts I have, and to become as healthy as I can to be here for my entire family.Sorry took me so long to get to the point.

Late in day surgery 4 PM

I have had 3 surgeries in the last 2 years, a band placement, a band revision, and now the sleeve, and they were all late in the day like yours, waiting to go in sucks, but afterward your sooo drowzy and doped up and the nurses are in and out taking blood preasures and all that stuff you'll wish someone would leave you alone. dont worry, it;ll go by fast, and you'll be home. good luck on your surgery and weight loss......vicki
  17. Mariposa Bella, I completely understand what you are going through. I had a lap band in July 2007 By Dr Aceves in MX.. I lost 65 lns & felt wonderful.. however things got difficult when I couldnt eat chicken, meat, salads, etc.. food kept getting stuck. I had the band removed in the US, my insurance covered it in July 2010. I have also gained over 30lbs.. My insurance has denied gastric bypass because my BMI is 37.6 with no co-morbidities & my doctor doesnt do bands! I am now trying to get surgery for the sleeve in MX. Good luck to you, I really do understand what you are going through!

    2nd Fill

Oh GOSH, I wish I were you Toni!! haha!! I am going for my first fill today...however, I'll be surprised if he does it because I can't feel my port, and he told me it may need to be done under fluro, which means another appt at the hospital! I NEED a fill SO bad!!! Right now I kinda wish I just went with gastric bypass.
  19. It took me a year a half to lose 95 pounds, so it might take you 2 years. It really depends on how aggressive you are with exercise, etc., but it is a slower process than gastric bypass, so you'll need to be patient.
  20. When you get to solids, you will feel it. liquids, some purees go right through. Doh. I just realized this was a Bypass question. Sorry! Is full the same as the sleeve? I get pressure near my esophagus, and my nose starts running like crazy or I try to burp and I can't. I measure everything too because one bite too many is horrible. >.<

    I don't feel full....

Hi, I am five days post op from gastric bypass and I don't feel any restrictions either...I had the sleeve two years ago and it was the exact opposite which kinda makes me worry. After reading more and more I guess this is normal while on liquids. I was just now able to finish one cup of a Protein shake and I feel satisfied. I also gained four pounds since my surgery. I guess in time it gets better. Feeling a little frustrated though. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    tummy tuck

I had an extended tummy tuck back in 2011 and I've been thrilled with the results as well. I had lost 90 pounds prior to the procedure and I have since regained 80 of that. My tummy is still flat and the muscle repair has held up amazingly well. I'm hoping that after I am sleeved and re-lose the weight, I won't need any sort of revision.

Referral & active army insurance question

Mrzsmitty2015, I have been thinking a lot about our conversation the other day about if Tricare covers the Sleeve or not. If you go back to the place where you found the requirements for WLS covered by Tricare: Right under this section You have proof of one of the following: A body mass index greater than or equal to 40 kilograms per meter squared (kg/m2); or A body-mass index of 35-39.9 kg/m2 with one clinically significant comorbidity, including but not limited to, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, obstructive sleep apnea, Pickwickian syndrome, hypertension, coronary artery disease, obesity-related cardiomyopathy, or pulmonary hypertension Where it starts the next section: TRICARE doesn't cover the following services: Office visits solely for the treatment of obesity Non-surgical procedures treatment of obesity Nutrition and diet counseling Biliopancreatic bypass (jejunolilea bypass, Scopinaro procedure) Gastric bubble or balloon SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY Gastric wrapping/open gastric banding Unlisted procedures TRICARE Does Cover the following open or laparoscopic bariatric surgical procedures for WLS: Roux-en-Y gastric-bypass Vertical banded gastroplasty (This not the sleeve) Gastroplasty (stomach stapling) Adjustable gastric banding (i.e. adjustable LAP-BAND When you find out on Wednesday if you have been approved for WLS please let me know. You said that you live 30 minutes from the base and maybe that is why they are now covering the sleeve. I thought about that too, to be honest our nearest BASE hospital is 500 miles from us. If we have anything major we are Tricare out and have to travel up to Miami for care which is over 150 miles. If Tricare has started covering the sleeve since the last time I called and checked back in September 2014 I would like to know. Then I wouldn't have to drive 1,000 miles roundtrip, sometimes twice a month to meet the requirements for WLS. 150 miles would be a lot easier and cheaper. When you receive your approval from Tricare this week. The first thing I would ask Which surgery have you approved me for. I hope Tricare has changed their coverage and will cover the sleeve that would be Great! Looking forward to hearing your exciting news this week.

Gastric Sleeve to MGB in 18 days

My Delightful first VSG turned Nightmare @ "resleeve" 7 years ago I had a VSG with the wonderful now deceased Dr. Aceves. He was the most caring gentle sweet man and absolutely brilliant,no scars, he was there with me when I woke. He spent untold time with me personally. I loved him and the surgery was so successful. I lost 105 pounds, came within 3 pounds of my goal weight and was ECSTATIC. A year and a half ago I had to leave my home state and move to rural NorCal to care for my aging parents. My active lifestyle screeched to a halt.. nothing to do here. The move was very difficult as I had lived in AK all my life and developed an amazing network of friends, had a booming business and a home i loved. I went through a terrible depression and a very sedentary lifestyle. Needless to say I began to gain weight. More depression. More weight. More depression, more weight. 40 pounds later I looked for a solution and found Dr. Almanza who proposed a 'resleeve" I did not know because I did not research that any reputable doctor would NEVER do a resleeve over a successful sleeve.. I does not work because the side of the stomach does not expand evenly. With no research and desperation I made appt with ALMANZA. My first impression when I met him was he is terrible narcissistic. He paid NO personal attention to the patients... quick promises and all talk about HIM, his 6 pack abs, his good looks, etc. It was too late for me. I was THERE. I awoke to the most horrible scars... and I have experienced absolutely NO feeling of reduced appetite. I believe in my heart that he opened me up, ran into scar tissue from a previou lipo job and said to heck with this and sewed me back up. A veterinarian would have done a better job at putting me back together. My scars are hideous and I have had NO weight loss. All he did was appear to the 'group once to extol his own virtues and we never saw him again. Now his staff blames my meds which are the SAME meds I was on with Dr. Aceves during the original surgery. SO if my meds would prevent weight loss....WHY oh why would the even take my money, promise my goal and do an ineffective surgery??? I asked for 1500 dollar back and they wont refund anything. I pegged him as a blowhard narcissist the night and the only time we met him... but it was too late. NEVER buy into the "resleeve"... it isnt "a real thing' done by any reputable doctor, but rather just a RIP off. Almanza is a quack and ripoff in my opinion. (unless it was a botched sleeve to begin with) Almanza is an absolute cocky, self absorbed, swindler, and fraudster. In my opinion and experience. I would advise avoiding him completely. I made a terrible mistake and lost a good amount of money. I so wish Dr. Aceves were still alive. I just dont know what to do now. WHAT do I do now? I have now done some research and the only reason a 'resleeve' is usually done is to fix an original sleeve that was botched. (not my situation). At this point, someone in my situation needs a Mini Gastric Bypass. It has been suggested to me once that a plication would apply but I dont agree. I have been beat to crap on the message boards ... expressing my feelings and experience... even accused of being a 'ruse' working for another doctor and trying to steer business his way, OMG it breaks my heart to share the awful weight (no pun intended) of being an obese person with others who share the same but are so judgemental and cruel. I must grow thicker skin. so now i am looking for a safe and reputable place (my beloved Dr. Aceves has passed) and his clinic is just too expensive for me... after the $$ I wasted with Almanzo. Ohhhhh my gawd this is just such a dilemma. I was never happier than when people were telling me i was too thin. Superficial?? Maybe ... but the feelings are REAL. and i know there are a few of you who 'get it'. And the others want to bash the crap out of me. yes, my happiness revolves around my weight and size. so kill me.
