Pregnancy before the one year mark?
MissKay replied to dr3am3rstarz's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was told 18 months... sorry I'm just surprised by the 12, ahaha. But yeah, because our bodies are still adjusting to the shift in nutrition, it could put more stress on a pregnancy to do it beforehand. That and the lower your weight, the easier time you'll have/less complications. I'd just urge that whatever you do, talk to an OBGYN beforehand (if you're planning). -

Who had sleeve surgery in Mexico?
#southernbelle replied to JR15's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I had gastric sleeve with Dr Fernando Garcia at CER Hospital in Tijuana Mexico. He is THE BEST!! My best friend and I had it done together. My daughters mother-in-law used him & my sister is leaving tomorrow. The hospital was immaculate!! The nursing staff & doctors were awesome!! The whole experience was great! I'm 4 wks out from my surgery and down 20 lbs. (my bmi was 32) My friend & I went back to San Diego 2 days after surgery. We toured all of San Diego, walked for miles!! We have had zero complications! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
I was worried about the procedure itself and if I could do it. I was/am worried I would fail too. Those fears are there and can help us to rise above. Stumbling block/stepping stone. I'm trying to use this thinking to help me. My biggest fear was and is still long term issues. I did a lot of research on complications in the long run. Things like vitamin deficiencies (my step mom and dad who both had rny deal with this), And reactive hypoglycemia (my dad developed this), Mostly so I could know what to look for, what to do and when possible prevent issues. Not to be an alarmist, but to be prepared and know as much as I could. Won't know everything but knowing helps me face my fears. I wish you all the best in facing those fears. You can do more than you know. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using the BariatricPal App

We are about the same stats, but I'm a little older than you. I have no co-morbidities and my surgeon advised that it is probably best for me to go the sleeve route. Which I was leaning towards anyway. Less complications all over for me.

What were you scared of?
womanonamission replied to Drea1014's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I see so many of us share the same fears, complications and/or not waking up. I'm a single mother of four, two are basically grown the other two, not so much. I lost my husband almost 13 years ago, so my fears are exasperated by the thought that they will have no parent left is something goes horribly wrong. But I've researched the stats, and the pros outweigh the cons and I put my faith in God that the worse case scenario will not happen. We all want to be healthy, so we are taking steps to be so. What were you scared of?
Berry78 replied to Drea1014's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have 3 teenagers at home. I worry about how complications would affect them. But, I bounce back to looking at the people around me (weight-related depression, job insecurity, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, dementia, neuropathy, retinopathy, sepsis, pulmonary ebolism...) and I see my own future. I have just started blood pressure medication and am prediabetic. And I realize that I need to do something NOW. If all goes well, I'll be a BETTER parent. If it doesn't, well, at least they saw me TRY to better myself. Sent from my SM-N920R4 using the BariatricPal App -
1 year and a half out... reoccurring sickness
PB42 replied to cuchas's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
For the past 2 nights I have had terrible cramps and thrown up a couple of times. Lasts about 30 minutes and really hurts. Last night I had a chicken patty from Trader Joe's. Tonight it was a ground chuck patty. I thought maybe I ate too much of the chicken and that was it but tonight I was really careful and weighed the hamburger patty and had nothing else. During the day I am fine. I am 5 months out from the surgery with no complications at all. I'm down over 50 lbs and exercise daily. The only new thing I have added are raw almonds so I will see what tomorrow brings. Nothing else I have eaten has bothered me at all. Any ideas? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
I'm in the process of doing research and still deciding if surgery is the right option for me. I only have my first appointment with my surgeon next week. My health insurance covers the procedure, but I have an out-of-pocket expense of $3,500. The rest is covered. I'm 5'-6", 250 lbs, BMI 40, and 32 yrs old. The two options I'm deciding between are standard gastric bypass and the sleeve. I guess the doctor will help me decide which option is the best for me, but I wanted to reach out to this community and see what others have experienced or see if you have any advice for me. I also want to have a baby in about two years or so. I've read that they recommend waiting 12-18 months, so that is not an issue for me. Why am I still undecided? It seems like surgery is a great option and there are low complication rates over all. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I'm being told that the mini RNY and the mini Gastric Bypass are the same, but when I read, it says something different...Can anyone enlighten me? "Roux-en-Y laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery, on the other hand, is much more complicated. Unlike mini gastric bypass, with RNY the small intestine is cut and two connections are made instead of one. In addition, the pouch created during the mini gastric bypass is larger ...Dec 31, 2016"

What were you scared of?
SweetSusy replied to Drea1014's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am also positive. And I know, logically, this surgery is very safe, but I also know that anytime you get put under that there can be complications. I've looked at both sides and decided that small risk is worth it. I've had so many friends that have had this done and don't regret it a bit. They are so much healthier! I too am headed to Tijuana. I can't imagine going through all the hoops I'm reading about here in the states and my insurance absolutely won't pay for it anyway. -
What were you scared of?
recreatingcate replied to Drea1014's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am a fiercely positive person, and always try to be that way. And, you would think that, as someone who has had multiple major surges before would be prepared. But the closer we get to my date (2/22), I become more and more scared of a major complication, or not waking up after surgery. I'm also a perfectionist by nature and my weight is the thing that I have failed at, and I'm terrified of doing it again. Working so hard to keep myself as healthy as possible so these aren't things I need to worry too much more about. -
Because I experienced some serious complications 5 days out of surgery and had to return to the hospital, my recovery was slowed considerably. My hubby had to drive me to all appointments and I went with him whenever he had to run an errand for us (I wasn't cleared for driving for a few weeks following 2nd discharge), so I considered every trip to the store a physical activity; each trip was exhausting for me, but every step I took in a store (using a buggy for support) and, every PT appointment to build-up my strength counted. Give yourself time to heal completely before returning to your pre-surgery normal workout. Everybody's recovery is a little different. As another BP member suggested - check in with your Dr. for his recommendation, esp. about the hot yoga.

Oct. 6,2016 I weighed in at 179. I'm 5'6". BMI OF 29. I'm diabetic and have high blood pressure. I was having complications due to diabetic neuropathy in my stomach. Before it could get to the point of needing a pacemaker I made the decision to have gastric sleeve surgery. This would illuminate or reduce the severity of my diabetes. I've only lost 20 lbs in 3 months time. I'm disappointed as I still have 20 lbs left to lose and can't seem to lose any more. I'm also losing a ton of hair. Can someone out there tell me what I'm doing wrong. I'm also exercising like never before. Sent from my LG-K550 using the BariatricPal App

Hi all, I have decided I'm going with Dr. Illan as my surgeon. I live in the US, and will be traveling to Tijuana. His rep suggested I go the MGB due to reflux, not to mention it seems like it will help me lose weight faster and prevent me from regaining later on. My concern is, where I live the MGB is not very common. I am concerned about finding a Dr. who can help me if any complications arise. I told my dad I was going to MX for surgery and he FLIPPED, he doesn't want me to go so I have to go behind his back and do it anyway. (I'm 24, but still I don't like keeping secrets.) I have heard of amazing experiences in Mexico, but I can't help but be scared. I would be very interested in hearing everyones' experiences, and if anyone has used Dr. Illan. Anything to calm my nerves would be great. I have my best friend for support, but my family is 100% NOT on board at all.

8 1/2 months out...
Dashofpixiedust8 replied to Dashofpixiedust8's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
@Daja I eat around 1200 calories a day. I have not cut out carbs but I do focus more on protein. I use a lot of weight watcher recipes and also have Greek yogurt and protein shakes. My surgeon said I was actually getting TOO MUCH protein so I have cut out most protein bars but keep one with me at all times for emergencies so I don't get fast food or something if I end out being out during a meal. I have started going to the YMCA only recently because I had a lot of complications after surgery and wasn't really able to exercise much besides walking. I do about 30-45 minutes of cardio 3-4 times a week. Then I do the weight machines twice a week (I separate out my upper and lower body and do each twice a week). My weight loss really ranges. Sometimes I lose nothing for weeks or I lose 10 pounds in a week. In the past 5 days I've lost 6 pounds. But the week before I lost nothing. -
Questions about bypass in Mexico?
Berry78 replied to whitneyisfab's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I am also deciding between sleeve and bypass. (Don't want a mini since they aren't common in the US). I'm pretty set on the sleeve because it can be converted later if necessary. The bypass is one and done, but what if it is more than I need? The sleeve has a pretty good weight loss to complication ratio, and I am willing to entertain the notion of a revision later. The RYN bypass is definitely "one and done". I wouldn't entertain a revision later from that. Good luck! -
The good, the bad and the ugly.
Hollyhock replied to alli.wakefield's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I suffered lots of angst over which surgery to go with. I sat down with my surgeon to go over the options. Basically, he told me that if someone has diabetes or serious difficulties bingeing on sweets, he recommends bypass. If they have a history of ulcers, he recommends sleeve. I didn't really fall into either category. We decided on sleeve because there wasn't really a reason to risk complications. I am now eight days after surgery. I've found that I have to work on balance to maintain a feeling of fullness. I'm still on a liquid diet. If I don't make my drinks thick enough and get my 90 grams of protein, I become ridiculously hungry. So far, I'm happy with the sleeve. but it's really too early to make a judgement. I've lost about 16 lbs in 8 days. I can let you know in a few months if I still feel the same. -
I was sleeved on June 8, 2016, so that makes today my 8 month surgi-versary. I really did well right out of the gate, and haven't had any complications to speak of. The first 70 pounds or so just melted off. I was tracking pretty much everything I ate, and going from 311 to 240 was easy as could be. After that, the pounds came off slower, and for about 10 weeks I mostly just stuck between 230 and 225...then 225 and 220...then 217 and 222. I realized that although I was weighing myself daily, I hadn't been tracking my foods. I think that's mostly because I started eating in restaurants almost exclusively, as my wife has been battling breast cancer. At any rate, the last few weeks it seems like the weight is falling off again. This morning I was 209.4, and I've changed my goal weight from 205 to 195 for no reason other than that I think I can do it. I can't believe I've actually lost more than 100 pounds. I've been eating a ton of Jamaican jerk chicken, and at least once a week I get a six pack of Mike's Hard Lemonade- so I guess I'm not "following all the rules," but people say I look 10 years younger, I feel great, and I pretty much eat what I want, just a lot less of it. No doubt this surgery changed my life for the better and I'm thankful for that. Thanks for all the great posts and the wealth of information here. I don't read daily anymore, but I certainly do read them regularly. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Question for ladies
Little Green replied to erica2185's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I recommend the IUD. It's the most effective, has a low rate of complication, and you can take it out any time with a simple office visit when you & your partner decide you're ready for another child (and no waiting period to let your hormones regulate like with BC). I have Mirena and between that and PCOS, I have not had a regular period in years. It's awesome lol. Mirena is known to lighten or stop periods. The medical literature included with the IUD said it's only about 20% of people but literally everyone I know who has Mirena has had lighter or no periods, so YMMV. I don't recommend the copper IUD if you already have a heavy flow b/c it's known to make periods and cramps worse. -
advice needed The good, the bad and the ugly.
alli.wakefield posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I got the lapband in 2013 and had some mild success but due to other complications I ended up with all my Fluid removed about a year ago. In that year, I've put on some serious weight and am now sitting at 330. I am 28 and recently married so as my husband and I talk about our future and kids, I can't help but panic. Between my PCOS, current weight and only one ovary, I believe that I will have an extremely hard time getting pregnant, let alone being healthy enough to carry the child to the full 40 weeks without complications. I have an appointment with a bariatric surgeon on Monday and they offer both the sleeve and bypass. I am still very undecided about which surgery would be the best option for me. I am terrified that the sleeve won't produce the results that I need to shock me into a healthy lifestyle permanently. I'm also terrified of the dumping syndrome or malnutrition if I do the bypass. But also, from what I've read the dumping syndrome is a good thing? Which just kind of confuses me. Moving forward, I know I don't have the option to fail or 'cheat' post-op with either of these surgeries because it's my future potential family on the line, my world is more than just me now so I can't be selfish or self-destructive with my eating. So what I'd love is all the advice that everyone has to offer. Informative articles, experiences, thoughts and opinions are all welcomed here! Thank you in advance!- 8 replies

Would You Have Weight Loss Surgery Again?
summerset replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I would definitely doing it again. However, I wouldn't opt for gastric banding again. Back in the days there was only lapband or gastric bypass and nearly nobody would have performed a gastric bypass on a woman my age and weight back then in Germany. It also was hard enough to get approved for lapband insurance wise, let alone gastric bypass or the DS. Most people got gastric banding or vertical gastroplasty then, some had a gastric bypass. I know have MGB because I needed revision because of complications (reflux, migrating band). I don't know if the MGB was the right decision. Maybe a few years down the road I will say that maybe RNY would have been the right choice or the DS to whatever. I'm having problems with gastritis again. Maybe diagnostics will be necessary again. Ah, whatever... Bottomline is though that I would have WLS again . -
Children after the sleeve?
bekah7482 replied to dfluke87's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Having the surgery and losing the weight will actually give you a better chance of getting pregnant and having a healthy pregnancy. I don't have first hand experience but I know plenty of people who have had success having children after surgery. I have a friend who has been trying to have a child with his wife for almost 20 years. He thought he was sterile (she has 2 kids so her stuff works). They have both had the surgery and are now pregnant and doing great. As a woman who is in the same position as you, ready to start a family, I was very worried about pregnancy after surgery. I have done a ton of research and ask my doctor about it every time I see him...literally EVERY appointment I ask him about how surgery can affect pregnancy. I have gotten so much positive notes on how much healthier pregnancy is after surgery then it would be for me at my current weight. Pregnancy is complicated and there are always a million things that can go wrong. Yes you will have to be super on top of your vitamins and making sure you are getting good nutrients from your food. However, I think anyone with past weight issues would have to be on top of not gaining too much weight and most women have trouble losing weight after having a kid. I am personally stoked to have this surgery and increase my chances of a health pregnancy. Also, you need very little additional calories to grow a baby. Especially if you are still in the overweight category. "Eating for two" or "you need to eat more for your baby" is not true. A person in the healthy weight range does not need to eat more calories in their first trimester, 340 more cals per day in their second trimester and 450 more cals a day in their 3rd trimester. If you are still considered overweight, these numbers would be even lower. At 1.5-2 years post surgery, you could easily add a couple hundred cals without screwing up your sleeve. Questions about bypass in Mexico?
GBLady41 replied to whitneyisfab's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Actually, I had surgery in Mexico, and went through BariatricPal TeamMX and the price covers the surgery, tests, post-op prescriptions, hospital and hotel stay, AND if you have any complications either in the hospital or the hotel, it was covered. I emailed my question to Bill Yanez and he responded that any complications I have in the hospital or hotel is included in my price. Bill?
