Turkey Burger
Inner Surfer Girl replied to ANewMe83's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't have Bypass but the sleeve so don't know if your program would be different or not so my answer may or may not be applicable. I eat turkey burger patties all the time. If you are far enough along on your program to have ground meats then they are a great choice. I find that I like mine with a little bit of gravy so that they are a bit more moist than the plain ones. -
Dumping On Thanksgiving, No Bueno
kyllfalcon replied to newgrandmother's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've never dumped. I may be ignorant, but I thought dumping was associated with the bypass, not the sleeve. I have slimed after eating too much or something too greasy, where saliva just poured out of my face. I felt sick, but not very, just a little. I only let that happen twice, learned my lesson. Truly, it sounds like a stomach bug to me. What do the rest of you think? -
Just wanted to let you know that there are a couple of other doctors in the Columbus area. They work in the Mount Carmel Hospital system and their practice is Mid Ohio Surgical. I think the names are Timothy Price & Philip Custer. I'm not 100% sure of the first names but I know the last names are correct. I called OSU and they tried to convince me to choose the bypass, so I got away from them quick. I am going to Dr. Duckett in Maumee Ohio because of insurance reasons. Good luck in your journey! My surgery is scheduled for Jan 19. Sheila

There are some foods on the list I was suprised I would be able to eat, for example, nuts, and I thought junk food wouldn't go down as easy lol (I have a friend who had gastric bypass that can not digest sugary foods and I thought the lap band would be similar, but it isn't-chocolate, cookies, and chips unfortunately go down fine) I have no problems with pasta in fact, with the second adjustment, I found it hard not to PB unless I ate pasta, it was a safe food for me, unfortunately, it is not the best food to lose weight with when you are trying to watch you carbs. I have problems with potatoes now (not on first adjustment but after 2nd-I am now on my 3rd as of today so I don't know) I can't eat them baked, although baked sweet potato goes down fine. Basically if it has sugar it goes down fine if it is healthy lately, I have had a problem. I do miss french fries, but, in some ways I am happy I can't eat them because they were one of the reasons I gained weight in the first place. I hope that helps, I know everyone is different Denise

It was highly recommended to me by my doctor, nutritionist, and other bypass patients but I got it yesterday, puréed it, & ate 1/2 cup last night and 2 hours later had the worst stomach cramps of my life! Took 2 Gas- X & it eased off after about 30 mins. Now I'm scared to eat the rest!

Do I need a fill....or what am I doing wrong
cynpatt replied to x96oun's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi! I also have a 14cc band (actually thought that I had a 10cc band until my fill this past Monday). I was also very hungry in the begining. I spoke to my nutritionist and upped my portions to 1 cup 3 times a day and 1/2 cup optional Snacks 2 times a day. Once I increased to the 1 cup (8oz) portions, i no longer needed the snacks. I make sure I drink a lot of Water, and hot tea also fills me up. My first fill was 2.5 cc (i had an empty band out of surgery) - no restriction. Second fill - another 2.5 cc - again absolutely no restriction. Third fill this past Monday - WOW! I hope that it stays this way, but I am prepared for the fact that once the swelling goes down that I will not be at my sweet spot. I have another appointment already set up for July 12TH. With fills scheduled every 4 weeks until I reach correct restriction, I know that there is an end in sight. Please don't get frustrated. Just eat healthy and don't drive yourself crazy. It took us all a long time to get to our present weights and it will take us time to get to our goal too. I have a different mind set about this entire process than a lot of the others on this board. I eat regularly. I don't think of this as a diet. I was never a sweets or desert eater - that was never my issue. If I crave Pasta or even chicken nuggets - it is okay - I just limit the portion size to a cup, make sure that I have the calories to spend that day (I try to stay around 1200 cal/day) and just make sure that I don't do it on a regular basis. This is the way "normal" people eat. That is why with a lot of research I had this surgery over bypass. I didn't want to always feel deprived - that is why I failed at so many diets in the past. I also make sure that I walk every day 2-3 miles. I have a walking buddy and we never miss more than 1 day a week. This will work for you! It has been almost 3 and a half months and I am now down 52 pounds. Yes I have a lot to loose, but it works. Please feel free to contact me if you want. Cynthia -

Gastric Sleeve vs Gastric Bypass

A Sleeve can be converted to a bypass if necessary but bypass cannot be modified. Both are permanent though. -
So Happy To Have Found This Site
carol1427 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hi, I'm new to the site and I am so glad I found it. I have so many questions about what other people have gone through before and after having bariatric surgery. I have been reading a lot of threads and have enjoyed reading everybody's comments. I have been struggling with my weight for many years and have now decided to have the gastric sleeve. I have done most of my pre-op consultations already and just had my upper GI done today. I just need to have an echo and stress test next week and get my doctor to sign medical necessity form as well. I'm scheduled for Jan 22, 2014 and I am nervous about failing. I love to eat, obviously....My husband is totally against me having this surgery. He thinks that it's all about self control and that I should be able to control myself and what I eat and I don't know how to explain my feelings for food and how it makes me feel, whether good, bad or indifferent. I have friends who have had the band, and bypass and have been peppering them with questions. I just don't want to fail. I would love to hear from anyone out there. Thanks...Carol -
4 weeks out and not losing weight
alemapsept15 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am very concerned. Tomorrow will be 4 weeks out from my bypass surgery. I have only lost 11 pounds since my surgery. I had a week long hospital stay and gained 6 pounds in the hospital, and I've lost that too. I am getting bummed out and am wondering how this is even possible that I'm not losing weight while eating right around 500 calories or less and drinking tons of Water. Anyone had this happen? And what did you do? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -

Gastric Sleeve vs Gastric Bypass
Rblack171 replied to Rblack171's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you, I'm going to talk to another surgeon because that threw me off. I asked about losing too much weight with the bypass she said well you can always gain a little back if you lose too much. -
I went to my first appointment with the bariatric surgeon today I had my mind set on Gastric Sleeve. The surgeon says well with you being diabetic and African American I would recommend the bypass studies have shown that bypass works better for AA females. She stated that I would no longer have to take my diabetes medication. She said it's my choice but she wanted me to know the best option for me. Has anyone with diabetes been successful with the sleeve?

getting nervous! Need to vent! Surgery 8/17/11
MeMeMEEE replied to emmas mom's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
When I first met my surgeon in April and asked how many sleeves he had done it was 12. He had been doing them just over a year. However he has done over 650 bariatric surgeries, 2/3 of his practice is this. He is specialized in laproscopic surgery and does NO open surgeries. I asked to meet someone in person who had the sleeve and they set me up with a mentor. She thinks she was 5th or 6th of his sleeves. She is now a year out. I am not sure how many sleeves he has done between April and August but my NUT told me no one is going lapband and all want the sleeve now - problem is a lot of insurances still don't cover it. He was asked in support group this month if he had a favorite surgery to perform and he said bypass. He didn't press me to do one surgery over the other and basically let me choose. I didn't have any co-morbidities and my BMI was high 40's. I think experience isn't just in the particular surgery. -
So here I am, today makes 3 months exactly post op and I am down 42 lbs. I am finally in Onederland. I am so amazed at how easy this journey has been in comparison to the Lap Band that I had placed in 2006. I am so happy that I went through the revision surgery 3 months ago. The sleeve is everything that the band was promised to be and more. Thank God I have not had one complication and I feel fantastic. As of now I have no regrets and I feel healthier than I have felt in years. I want to send out a special thanks to my surgeon Dr. Aceves for changing my life.

Weight gain in the first two weeks post op
BecomingMeAgain posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi all, so I have a question because I'm freaking out a bit. The day off my bypass 13 days ago I went into the hospital weighing 275lbs. After surgery my weight went up 10lbs while still in the hospital which I understand is from the IV fluids and what not. However after coming home, I dropped to 264lbs and in the past three days I have gained 3lbs. I know that's not a drastic gain but I'm still concerned. Has anyone else had weight gain after leaving the hospital during the first couple weeks post op ? Sent from my Pixel using BariatricPal mobile app -

Recommendations? K. Krause or E. Meguid?
Mary-2b150 replied to BandZski's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I don't have any personal experience, but my mother was not impressed with her two previous lap band doctors - mcguid and hawasli. I forget which one was her surgeon and which one she just did follow ups with... Nothing horrible, but they really didn't know nearly as much about the lapband as they did the gastric bypass, and it showed whenever my mother had a question. She was having issues with swallowing food.. it hurt her to swallow even well chewed foods,, but she was still hungry all the time... their suggestions were always to try getting another adjustment... it really made my mom feel like it was all her fault and she had "failed"... When I decided to get banded,, I went to Dr. Deol's seminar with my mother, and my mother was immediately impressed with her and switched to her... Dr. Deol figured out the problem was an esophageol pouch (i''m fuzzy on the details) - and assured my mom that she wasn't a failure! And has been working with my mom to make sure everything is okay... Anyway, if it hadn't been for dr. deol she would have just thought she "failed' or the lap band was another failure.. the other two doctors just didn't understand the issue.. Anyway, that was my mother's experience, it might be entirely unique, but I thought i'd post it in case anyone was interested. I could ask my mom for more details about either doctors if anyone is interested. I'd have her post here but she is computer illiterate! -mary -
Banding vs. the Sleeve
Kristy29 replied to BeautyisherGODgivenname's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I chose the band because bypass and the sleeve scared me too much. Yes, you are adding something to your body, but with the other two surgeries, you are permanently altering your body. I like that if for some reason I have complications with the band, it can be taken out and I am back to how I was before. Of course, I do plan on keeping it in there forever, but I like to keep my options open. I also liked that the death rates with the band were much lower than the bypass, and also lower than the sleeve. Another thing I didn't like about bypass and the sleeve was that you must take Vitamins for the rest of your life. Of course, as a bandster I should take my vitamins, and I will. But with bypass, you must. One of the reasons for getting the band for me was because I wanted to get off my diabetes meds, and I didn't want to just have to start taking different meds. Of course, gummy vitamins are much more fun to take than pills anyways, I look forward to it, lol. I hope that helps, it's a hard decision and I wish you luck. -
I have gotten back into cooking shows since my sleeve. I can actually watch and NOT be hungry allte time! AND I watch US of Bacon and All You Can Eat and both disgust me that food service attracts us likes moths to a flame. There is a restaurant called Heart Attack Grill or somethig in Vegas where u eat free if you are over 350 pounds and they spank you if you don't finish your food. And their burgers are named Bypass burger like Single double triple and quadruple bypass!!!! Crazy!!!!

How Long Did You Go From The 'idea' To Booking Your Gastric Sleeve Surgery ?
LindaS replied to waterlover's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had thought about weight loss surgery previously, but I had major reservations about the banding and absolutely did not want the gastric bypass. I had even signed up to attend a seminar about a year or so before I went through with it. I didn't go to the seminar. This year, in June, I had had enough. I signed up for a seminar and attended it. I learned about the sleeve, and I knew it was the one for me. I had surgery less than 6 weeks later. -
Jusme, Honestly I really believe a bypass is easier. At first. But then once the maintaining part starts a few years out it becomes more difficult. Especially if you don't exercise or eat right. At least with the band we have the option of adjustments. Those people that are complaining about the band not doing all the work would probably lose a lot with a bypass. And then they would be the ones who would gain it all back because they have not changed their habits. I heart my band.

6 days post - looking for advice
Frustr8 replied to PJAY117's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Raptly reading this all, I won't be a sleeve but many of these things could be me in the future. Your biggest forest scar is where they pulled your stomach remnant out, I would not be exempt because in. bypass the same place is where surgeon puts his bigger gauge instruments.,I guess you'd have to have an endoscopic sleeve to avoid, this, but I guess they have their own cast of problems. No free rides in Bariatrics, are there?😓 -
Type 1 Diabetic- What are your most noticeable changes?
RLalone posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I’m a type 1 diabetic. I am scheduled to have my surgery done on the 13th of this month. I am having the gastric bypass done with Dr Lytle in Atlanta. My CW is 228 and I’m doing this for the benefit of reducing my insulin intake and losing this unwanted weight. Does anyone have any insight for me? Did this actually reduce your insulin intake? Also I’m on the minimed 670g system. Should help prevent them from needing to check my sugar at weird times of the night. Thanks in advance!!- 3 replies
