Revision from sleeve to bypass 8 days post op
mae7365 replied to funky's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I also had the revision for GERD, Gastritis and Esophagitis and I'm very happy that all that has been resolved. But I'm also very happy with the weight loss. As you can see below, I gained almost all my initial weight that I had lost after the sleeve. I felt like a complete failure and a fool for having thrown away my chance at a normal weight. I know this revision is my second chance to do it right and learn from my mistakes. Here are my stats over my 6 year journey. Highest weight May 2012 - 222 lbs. Gastric sleeve surgery weight November 2014 - 212 lbs. Lowest weight post sleeve May 2015 - 151 post op 6 months (61 lbs. lost) Highest weight prior to revision surgery January 2019 - 205 lbs. (54 lbs. gained) Weight day of revision surgery October 2020 - 185 lbs. Current weight March 2021 (5 months post op) - 138 lbs. (47 lbs. lost) I hope that I never have to add a line that says I've gained weight back again!!!! Good luck on your journey!!!! -
VSG to RYGB - after 5 years with VSG
mae7365 replied to Paradigm Star's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
@Paradigm Star I didn't feel much restriction immediately following RNY either. At least not like I did after VSG. But as time has gone by, it's not really restriction that I feel as much as just feeling full. And yes, I do feel hungry at time. I had a ZOOM meeting with my support group yesterday and the dietician even commented that revision surgery patients don't always feel like the "virgin" RNY patients - maybe because we've "been there, done that", we know what is going on and what to expect and there isn't that huge jump from a normal stomach to 1/4 stomach like we had with the VSG. So we went from 1/4 stomach to 1/8.....not as drastic of a change. But I know I feel great and have a ton of energy at almost 5 months post op. I feel like I'm fully healed inside. I'm glad you had the surgery. It should help, or eliminate, the gastric issues you were dealing with.......and you'll get to lose some weight in the process!!! -
Modified Duodenal Switch
Ronnysgal replied to Lara in Arkansas's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
I had the surgery on Feb 22nd of this year, so I am a little over a month out. Mine is long story as I had a Gastric Bypass in 2017 around the same time, and then almost exactly 2 years later, it had to be reversed due to stomach ulcers trying to perforate my stomach. I gained a lot of weight back more then 50% of what I had lost in over the next two years, and had some other issues, so I went back to my surgeon and we decided I could do the modified DS switch. I absolutely love it. I will say there are some interesting things that people mentioned that in MY case I have note experienced, like if I eat something that is fatty like cheese or bacon, that it will send me running to the bathroom where-in I would be treated to an explosion and a smell that only a mother could love and she would question it. This is not true in my case. If anything at times I will need stool softener's to help go to the bathroom on occasion. Nothing like what I experienced post Gastric Bypass though. I am able to eat more at a sitting with the DS then after Gastric Bypass as well. I am being careful though to not over eat. If I had to do it all over again then I would opt for the DS -
Pain after revision was significantly worse than any of my other previous abdominal surgeries (myomectomy, sleeve, hysterectomy, colostomy reversal). I expected it based on the amount of scar tissue I have but it still shocked me upon waking up. Each day it gets easier. This group has really helped me this week. Any suggestions on how to get all my protein in since I’m going home soon?!

Things You Can Never Have Again With Sleeve :(
blackcatsandbaddecisions replied to MK1986's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I’ve been able to tolerate pretty much everything at 4 month post op. I eat fruit and vegetables including lettuce frequently, I have spicy food, coffee, etc. I’ve not tried soda, I’ve never liked it and sweet beverages are not only gross but the quickest way to bypass your restriction and start gaining. My doctor said to avoid bread and rice so I’ve not bothered with it. Tbh I don’t have room in a meal for it anyway- if I have a curry I can just eat some vegetables and protein and then have enough left over for a few more meals, forget wasting space on rice! I think a lot of the problem is that there is so much you can have but probably shouldn’t from a weight gain perspective. I’m not drinking while I’m losing but when I get to maintenance I’m looking forward to having a half glass of dry white wine every few weeks, like I used to. Candy is such a huge problem for me I don’t know that I will ever effectively find a way to work it into my diet again. Based on how I react to other stuff I bet I physically could eat it, but it would completely undermine what I’m trying to do here. Some things may be better left in the past. -
Best decision I ever made
Justin3002 replied to victoriaciminelli111's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi I am getting this surgery later this year. I was going in thinking about the bypass and he suggested based on my age, BMI and weight fit the DS. It just sounds so extreme. Can you tell me why you decided on this and things to consider me? I am not concerned about the vitamins, the surgery sounds really drastic -

Gastric bypass- endoscopic revision
Tina Leo replied to pattyoj's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had my original bypass Nov 2009. Lost well, but regained it all. Since 2009 procedures and best practices have changed, so my surgeon updated my ..situation... to industry standard plus further distallized my anastamosis to allow for some Mal absorption again to get the weight back off. -

Gastric bypass- endoscopic revision
polishanita replied to pattyoj's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
If you don’t mind me asking, what is the reason for the revision? I am a rny patient. 6 yrs out. I had lost 170 pounds and now have regain 50. This puts me 100 from my goal weight. I am hoping a revision would jumpstart my weight loss again and help me reach my goal weight. -
Help I need answers
Tracyringo replied to Chch's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Unfortunately a lot of people are in the same boat after a revision. No restriction really stinks and is quite a shock when it is all said and done. We pretty much have a funnel where the food goes straight into the intestines, so the food just slides right on through is my understanding. What are you eating and how often ? I find I get more of a fullness feeling when I eat solid protein like steak or salmon. It really comes down to making the best choices you can in what you are eating and eating every 3 to 4 hours and make sure you dont drink until 30 min after a meal or you are just washing it out. -

I agree with this - but one small correction. They don't actually remove any of your stomach in the gastric bypass. They just divide it in two with surgical staples. So technically, the bypass is reversible - but they don't do it unless you have a serious medical issue that can't be corrected or treated any other way. -

I concur. Do your research, but in my research I have found that lap bands have the most problems and patients are more likely to need them removed and do a different surgery instead. CLIF NOTES summary of the two most common other gastric surgeries in laymen terms: I think most docs now prefer the gastric sleeve for a majority of their patients (but NOT ALL). Yes, you are removing a large portion of your stomach, but your stomach still functions to do what it needs to do.... it is just a lot smaller. But the stomach is resilient and stretchable so over time it will accommodate more food than it does in the early months. And the rest of your body parts are in tact. It is a simple surgery procedure wise. Still a major abdominal surgery as any other abdominal surgery... but no more complicated than most other frequent abdominal surgeries. Gastric Bypass makes the stomach smaller with staples and rearranges the plumbing a bit. Therefore it changes how your digestive system works. BUT... may be the preferred surgery in SOME cases... such as those with diabetes (not all diabetics do this one, but I see more that do this one). This surgery is a little more complex, but in some cases it is the recommended procedure. Both procedures will get the job done if you work the program as prescribed by your team. Your degree of success is usually dependent on you being willing to put in the hard work that goes with ANY weight loss program... and how you use your new weight loss "tool". Anyhow... there are a lot of great sources of information about these and other WLS procedures. Do some research. Have an idea what you might want to get done and why.... and consult a WL Surgeon. For my surgeon, the first questions he asked are what have I done to try to lose weight before, why do I want surgery, and what procedure I wanted and why. Then he went on to tell me what he thought and made his recommendation. Anyhow.... most WL Surgeons hold free group information sessions where someone from their staff or even the surgeon themselves give a presentation and overview of the procedures and the qualification requirements. I waited a long time to attend because I was so nervous about it... but I now wish I had gone sooner! Also... feel free to attend them through different surgeons offices in your area. I think locally we have 3 groups who do the surgery at 3 different hospitals. I like my team a lot... but I wish I had shopped around first for the doc team. I might have still picked the same guy... but I just went with who my referral was through.... but I am quite certain my insurance covered at least 2/3 teams. Anyhow... do your research and whatever procedure you chose, lap band, sleeve, bypass or other..... we will support you as best as we can! -

OP, please do some thorough research before you commit to the lap-band. "In the best study we have on just how problematic lap band surgeries can be, published in JAMA in May, researchers from the University of Michigan looked at 16 years of Medicare data to see how common “re-operations” were after the first lap band procedure. These involved everything from removing the band to replacing it, fixing it, or following the initial procedure with another weight loss operation (i.e., the gastric bypass). They found 20 percent — or one in five — of the 25,000 lap band patients needed an additional procedure. That’s much higher than the 3 to 9 percent re-operation rate for the gastric bypass and gastric sleeve surgeries." https://www.vox.com/science-and-health/2017/5/25/15659878/weight-loss-surgery-lap-band-evidence -

I'd rethink the lapband. Hardly any surgeons will place them anymore because so many people have had problems with them. Many have had them removed and had sleeve or bypass instead. I know some people still have theirs and love them, but they seem to be in the minority these days. -
Hello everyone. I’m Marissa and I had gastric bypass in October of 2020. I’m roughly 5.5 months post op from having the surgery at Baptist Bariatrics. With my surgeon being Dr H. I’m writing to introduce myself. HW 292 SW 273 CW 207 GW 150. I’m doing my best to reach Onederland so any advise is welcome.

Any March Surgeries?
ThanaK replied to Hopefulin2021's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m new to this forum. I’m scheduled for a gastric bypass March 29. I also feel scared and excited. The scared part is because I’ve had a few major surgeries in the last 10 years with post op complications. So I have a little PTSD when it comes to major surgery. -
So here is my story and already I know your being able to help me is a long shot. I had my stomach stapled in 1999. I lost 100 pounds but the metal ring that was placed at the bottom of my stomach eroded through. Later I learned this is why they do not do this procedure anymore. I then had a conversion surgery to a gastric bypass in 2012. This was following the death of my daughter. I lost 30 pounds but that was from no appetite due to depression. I never had restriction from the surgery. I had a revision in 2020 (October)) again I have no restriction and am not losing weight. I have done everything I was told and it did not work again. Have you ever heard of this? My pouch is an appropriate size, but I can still eat? Why doesn’t it work for me? Why can I still eat? Do I need a ring or device to truly have restriction? I need some help and answers.

Sleeve to bypass 3/22 waiting surgery date
TiffanyTate posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi all, new to this app. I originally had sleeve in 2014 and lost almost 100lbs. I maintained my weight for a year, happy, healthy and exercising. I was diagnosed with Epilepsy and put on medication. I became very depressed and started packing the lbs back on. After several years of getting seizure meds regular and 10-15 lbs gain each year plus Covid.... I gained 65-70 back. I have my final appointment 4/14 hoping for surgery date ASAP. Can anyone share pros and cons from VSG to Bypass? Thanks Tiffany -
Gastric sleeve or bypass??
SummerTimeGirl replied to Dani64519's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Well my surgeon said when he has a patient with diabetes he almost always likes to do the bypass because it supposedly has quicker, more immediate results for people who have that and high BP. But with me, like I said, I have a history of being anemic and also take the NSAID's every day which is a no-go for bypass pts. So, that made the decision even easier. PLUS I was only borderline Type 2 at the time. It wasn't until I did my blood work a few weeks later that we realized I was now Type 2. As for my date, we haven't even discussed it yet but I have an appointment on April 2nd with Mental Health then on April 5th I meet with the Pulmonologist. Providing neither of them need anything further from me, I will have completed everything and then it's just a matter of the office submitting it all to my insurance and waiting for an answer from them as to whether or not they will cover it and then I guess I get a date. I'm hoping for a May date the latest but I know they are backed up due to Covid so it may be later. I really don't know.
