    March 23 buddies yet?

Just wanted to check in on all the March 2023 peeps and see how it's going! As for me, I was sleeved on 3/24/23. Lost 12.3 lbs before surgery and have lost 21.3 lbs since surgery, for a total of 33.6 lbs at 6 wks post-op. This feels slow to me, and I often wonder if I'm doing something wrong. I had the dreaded 3 week stall and then a big "woosh" of several pounds in a week. I tolerate every food I try and get my 64 oz in which is great, but I don't feel much restriction anymore, and I definitely get hungry before 3 hrs. I try to get at least 15 grams of protein every 3 hours, but I'm still hungry. 😩 I also probably need to get back to walking. I'm one of those that is very reliant on the scale even though I definitely know how exercise works and how muscle weighs more but also burns more fat. My energy has been LOW, and as soon as I took a break from walking my 2.5 miles a day to try and rest a bit, I had the big movement on the scale. So, I haven't started back up for that reason. I'm just not the type of person that can withstand the scale stalls and comfort myself with "muscle weighs more." Pitiful, I know. I'm so dang impatient. Once I make a decision, I want it now! (I know it doesn't work that way, but 🤷🏼‍♀️ I can't help it!). How's it going for everyone else?

Hair Loss (Tips & Advice please)

Oh I feel you OP. I am almost 18 months post sleeve and had 3 periods of really noticeable hair loss along the way. I have always had thick hair that I have worn well below shoulder length. At around 3 months I lost loads and cut it to shoulder length. Twice more I have shed *A LOT* and done the same or higher cut again. Now sitting at a below ear bob, LOL. However - this far out I now have about 3 inches of really really thick regrowth (fuzz) that I think will meet my current bob in a few months. Nothing you put onto your hair will make any difference - honestly. Being well nourished from within and meeting all of your goals might. However for me it was just reaching the end of my weight loss and the concurrent major stress on my body that seemed to allow my hair to finally regrow properly. You're doing amazingly I'm sure. I wish you the very best of luck.
  4. You can drive as soon as you're off all narcotics. I just drove today, a week out from surgery, and was fine. I probably could have driven soon, but I didn't have the need to. It really just depends on what medication you're on and how you're feeling.
  5. Hi there - I had a gastric band for 16 years; i went from 280lbs to 91lbs (im very short!). I had it removed last year as it had slipped and im having a bypass in a few weeks. Why not try eating a meal / snack high in protein in the evening. It will make you feel fuller for a longer period of time. Good luck with it xx

    Gray/Pale Stools

Pale is usually due to fat malabsorption, I believe, and that's to be expected. I remember having those the first month or so post-op. Gray - iron, maybe? Check with your surgeon, but multi-colored stools aren't that unusual the first few weeks after surgery, though. I think mine only lasted the first 4-6 weeks, though. P.S. I just read that pale is the result of not enough bile salts in your stool - possibly due to an obstruction.. Although that article wasn't specific to bariatric patients. I'll see if I can find something specific to bariatric patients. Although again, weird stool colors arent' that uncommon early out - which makes sense when you consider they've re-arranged our digestive systems. But it's always good to check with a doctor just in case... P.P.S. I just cut and pasted this from the UC-San Francisco's bariatric program Web page: Bowel habits Bowel movements vary greatly after bariatric surgery. Stools may be foul smelling, associated with flatulence, or a different color than normal. Taking iron supplements, for example, will make your stools dark or black. Until you're eating more solid food, your stools will be soft. Most of these changes resolve as the body heals and adapts to changes. Please call your bariatric surgery team if you have persistent diarrhea.

    JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES

Hi June friends! I’m having RNY June 2nd. I had a lapband for about ten years and just had that removed a few weeks ago due to lack of success and negative side effects. Now I have no restriction, no side effects, and feel like I can’t stop eating, ugh! Surgery day can’t come soon enough. Good luck to you all!
  8. Make sure you have LOTS of different options for protein. By day 3, I couldn't stomach drinking the protein shakes anymore and felt like I was going to vomit. I found that I liked fruity protein vs. creamy. But that's just me. Good luck!
  9. i think frequent hair washing (with shampoo) is more an issue for your scalp than your actual hair. i only "wash" my hair with shampoo maybe once every 1-2 weeks. all other times in the shower i "wash" with conditioner only (google co-washing). honestly nothing is going to prevent the hair that means to fall out from not falling out. you may delay it a bit (dont wash, dont brush, dont rub, don't tie up, etc). but its really just delaying the inevitable. enjoy your vacation, your hair will sort out eventually ❤️

    Stall

Your body is still in its healing process. The 3 week stall is normal and my doctor advised that weight loss isn't going to be a curve but more like stair steps; there will be moments it goes down and then periods of stalls. Much easier expectation set up in my opinion. Stick with your plan and trust the process. The weight is worth the wait!
  11. Hey All, I’m 12 weeks post gastric bypass and for the last couple of weeks have had gray/pale stools 😳 Not sure if it’s because I’m trying to give lots of new foods a go or something else. I had my gallbladder removed years ago and I’ve not got any pain or jaundice so I’m a bit confused! I’m waiting to hear back from my surgeon but just wondered if anyone else had experienced this?

    May 2023 surgeries

My surgery is May 15. I don’t generally like flavored water and the few I like are red. Same with jello. I start my preop diet today. I only have a week. Surgery date came much sooner than expected.

    Help 😞

I haven’t recovered. I’m still not able to eat I’m now 13 weeks out. I been in and out the hospital. Even with just dipping a spoon in soup and licking it irritates my stomach. Doctors keep focusing on Nausea which yes I’m very nauseous but the pain the acid not much. They keep prescribing me medication that I’m unable to swallow even if I tried I would throw up. I feel like I’m dying day by day I have dropped 38 pounds. I produce so much saliva I choke on it and acid heart burn none stop . They suggesting I might need a gastric bypass but I’m scared I’m reading bad things I already had a hernia repair not resolved anything for me I feel lifeless

    May 2023 surgeries

Aw thank you! Good luck to you and everyone else this week having surgery. I'm definitely feeling the nerves now. Hoping those who've had it continue to recover well and that the rough parts ease soon. Those on the pre op diet, you got this! It socks but it's worth it.

    Weak and lightheaded

that's often due to low blood pressure or low blood sugar - but I suppose dehydration could do it, too. Usually when it's low pressure, though, you feel it more when you've been lying down or sitting and you suddenly stand up (and that particular scenario is not that uncommon the first few weeks after surgery). But I agree with the others - might be good to run it by your team.

    Weak and lightheaded

I am 2 weeks post op. I would suggest calling your team. I had major blood pressure complications the first week, thankfully all ok now.

    Stall

Yeah.. I hit a stall for most of April which was mostly in my 3rd month. It was depressing for a bit. I switched up my exercise routine a bit. And that seems to have helped. Because now I am losing again. I know it's common but it definitely does a number on the psyche. Because you can't help but wonder what you did wrong. Even if nothing has changed in diet.

How Can I Drink More Water??

I start off the morning with a full bottle of water. My surgeon told me at my 2-week follow-up and looked at me pointedly and he said to sip water often throughout the day. He also said to keep a water bottle handy at all times. It took awhile but now I am drinking water all the time now at 14 weeks.

    Burning/pulling/stinging pain

I am 14 weeks post-op. And I had experienced that awful tugging/pulling on my left side for several weeks in the beginning. Now, not so much. Maybe I might feel when I hold my arms up for too long when doing my hair. But for the most part, it went away in time.
  22. mine started at 3 months post-op. cut off all my hair into a pixie because i hated seeing my scalp AND vacuuming up the CARPETS of hair accumulating in my bathroom. The Great Shedding stopped about 3 months after it started. im 4.5+ years out now and i have a full head of under-boob length hair that actually seems thicker & healthier than it was pre-surgery (probably due to my better diet and overall health) and it even has a wave to it now, which was unexpected, but appreciated lol. I didn't take any sort of supplement nor do anything special to my routine other than the haircut. Basically just waited it out. Good Luck, and hang in there!
  23. I don't have a monumental update, but any progress is good progress in our world. 😉 I'm going on 6 weeks out from bypass & hernia repair. Ecstatic I can finally sleep on my side again! Lol. I'm down 19 lbs from day of surgery and 29 altogether from first consultation in January. I'm happy with the progress so far. I still want to lose 45 lbs, so we will see how the journey goes. I'm so anxious to get to regular foods stage, but I also understand the soft stage is one of the easiest food stages regarding choices. Just getting a little bored with it, but old favorites like blue cheese and feta cheese are rocking my world right now. 🤣 Kudos to all of you on here getting the job done and then some!

    Stall

I was told by my surgeon and his team that for some reason, everyone hits a plateau around 3-4 weeks post op. You should be fine after that I got worried too when I hit my plateau but my weight has been going down ever since.
  25. It's happened several times in the last week, I get extremely weak and lightheaded- like I'm going to pass out. The first time was walking up the stairs and then it happened again today in the shower. I've been walking, so it's not every time I am active. I'm thinking of either blood pressure or lack of fluids. Is this normal? Should I talk to my team? I'm almost a week out from rny
