    Food question

I didn't really do chips or anything snacky till 6+ months out. One, I didn't have room for them - after my protein and veggies, I just didn't have stomach space for anything else, and two, I was terrified that I would slip back into old habits. I have a really hard time with moderation and I knew that knowing I could eat that stuff would lead me to eating it, so I held off a good long time. That being said, nowadays (10+ months) I do occasionally have a few of the Flex protein chips and they are pretty good. I've never had the Quest chips, so I can't really compare, but even a few regular chips won't break the bank if you can do them in moderation. As for butter/oil, I never stopped using them. If I was sautéing veggies, I would use oil, or if I made soup, I used butter, etc. I've always used them judiciously so the tiny bit included in my portion really wasn't a big deal.

    Nutritionalist consult

My 2 week pre-op diet was 3-4 shakes a day with no more than 200 calories each and minimum 15g of protein, celery and cucumbers, and 1-2 cups of chicken or beef broth a day. Absolutely NO popsicles or sugar free jello. I would constantly be shaving celery with a peeler into “noodles” and then adding it to the broth for a soup of sorts. AND I was super lucky enough to do it twice in an 8 month period. 😂 (needed a hernia repair surgery that was coupled with a VSG to RNY revision to reduce chances of future hernias.)
  3. Gas station finds- Cottage cheese, yogurt, protein shakes, cheese cubes, hard boiled eggs, peanut butter or nut butters, and maybe pecans chewed really well (they’re a softer nut to tolerate). Travel plazas compared to regular gas stations will have more options to choose from. Taco Bell/taco places- refried beans with cheese or maybe taco meat Panera or Subway- scoop of tuna salad. Panera also has yogurt tubes, bananas, oatmeal, and smoothies (although high in sugar) KFC- chicken pot pie (remove the crust and either really chew or don’t eat the chicken McDonald’s- during breakfast you can get just scrambled eggs. They also have sausage patties you can order individually as well but that might need more time. Wendy’s- chili might be okay Tropical smoothie cafe- they have wraps and stuff for everyone else to choose from but you can get protein powder in a smoothie there and reduce or omit sugar in them as well. Sit down places- baked fish, some soups, and maybe spinach dip without the chips would be ok choices I’d think. If you go Italian you could order lasagna and just not eat the noodles. As always, try things before you go if possible because unexpected dumping on a road trip isn’t fun.
  4. I work 10 hour days so I ordered some 5 ounce reusable bottles to be able to prepare my meals for the days after surgery while still doing liquid. I have also started trying to get used to sugar free yogurt. So far chobani zero greek yogurt is a doable option. Don’t forget you are allowed sugar free popsicles as well!

    September surgery buddies!!

I just started ordering things to get ready and to kind of spread out the purchases since I still have a month before I start the liquid diet. Anyone else buying stuff yet and what are you getting? I bought myself a pill dispenser that has up to 4 options daily since I'll be taking the ProCare chewables for one month and then the capsules. I have to have 2 calcium chews a day with that and my thyroid meds too. I bought only a month worth of the chewables and a 3 month supply of the capsules. I tried 2 different protien drinks and I like the premier over the ensure that the Drs office gave me. So I have a few flavors of that. I don't want to drink them before I need them but I hope I like them when I do have to drink them. Its weird to me that jello, pudding and yogurt are allowed on a liquid diet, but I'm not going to argue since I think I'll probably appreciate the thickness over broth. I'm a planner as you can tell and I just want to be prepared but not too much or it might even spoil beforeI get to use it. Anything else you guys are doing to get ready?

    Food question

I don't know exactly when but I know for a fact it was after 6 weeks. At 6 weeks is when I was easing back into a normal diet. I made nachos with them, ground taco meat, cheese and hot sauce. I ate 3 and was full. haha PS: I don't like them. The after taste is weird. Popcorners flex protein chips are way better. (IMO) I never really cooked with butter and oil. I might buy butter once a year and have had the same bottle of olive oil forever. Like a few years. I think I used butter/oil for the first time after 6 weeks too, just because that was when I started cooking "normal" foods again.

    Fluid Intake

I have not had any problems with getting in my fluids. I get dehydrated VERY quickly so I was very focused on making the effort. Now (4 months post op) it is natural and basically back to normal. I can drink normal, large amounts, I would say I even chug. Every once in a blue moon it hits heavy if I chug too fast but the feeling goes away in a minute or 2 so still not an issue. I average 70oz of WATER a day, plus my daily shake and if I have something else like tea or something. I don't prefer fake sugar either, but luckily I like unsweet tea and use shakes to flavor decaf coffee now. I am not even much of a coffee drinker. I like the flavor of coffee, so before surgery those sugary coffee drinks, coffee flavored icecream and stuff like that. Now, I just take black coffee with caramel protein drinks and it is just as good to me. When I first came home from surgery, they gave me a bunch of 1 oz. cups and said I need to get 2/3 drinks out of each cup and work my way up. I would fill them and start a tally to keep track. Each day I made a point to beat yesterdays tally until I hit my goal. It made me focused and made it easy to hit the goal but I was definitely drinking ALL DAY LONG. Maybe try something like that to keep you moving forward, you can also buy the hydration additives I mentioned. I don't know if they have artificial sweeteners though. Also, keep in mind the additives don't allow you to drink less water, it just helps your body absorb the water better.
  8. For restaurants, soup is pretty much always a safe choice early on. You could also do something like a meat loaf and just chew the tar out of it, chicken breast, similarly chewed to oblivion, or maybe something like tacos that you just eat the meat/beans and toppings of. For snacks - cheese, protein shakes or bars, soft fruit, yogurt, and eggs are all good bets. As always, just be very careful. I had a similarly restrictive post-op plan and stuck to it fairly closely, but did make the occasional concession when needed.
  9. Hmmmm, brain storm time. No meat for 6 weeks? Never heard that one before. Whew. Snacks: Yogurts, cheeses, hard boil eggs? That's about the only thing I can think of that would travel. You could order soups and not eat certain things depending on what is in the soup? Charcuterie appetizer and your family could eat the things that you can't? Egg salad, don't eat the bread? Or get crackers if you are allowed. I ate taco bell refried beans and black beans a few times. That's about all I can think of, I was allowed meat at the pureed stage (pureed obviously). It is also so close to allowing the meat, maybe reach out to your team and see if you could try softer meats a few days early? That would REALLY open up your options. PS: I don't care for the quest chips but a lot of people do so I hope you are one of them who like them after taking that plunge. I like the popcorners flex protein chips the best. Good luck and safe travels!
  10. Hey all, I'm sure this has been asked a bazillion times, but the wife, adult son and I are leaving next week for a vacation/family visit. The road trip is 1,000 miles. I feel great right now and we take turns driving, so that's not the issue. We make this trip annually and will likely have 2-3 fuel stops and will stop another couple times to eat. When we leave, I'll be four weeks post-op, so I'm looking at my week 5 and 6 menu items, and I am asking for your tips and tricks when going on a long trip Drinks: I will bring coffee, water and pre-mixed protein shakes for fluids. Maybe a Gatorade Zero for a change in pace. Snacks: What snacks are suggested? According to my nutrition plan, about the only things I could have thru week 4 are the protein drinks, string cheese and some peeled fruit. I'll be right at the start of Week 5 which mentions up to 3 Multi-grain crackers a day, but I ordered some of the Quest Protein Chips. (I purchase $95 worth, so hope they are good). 😋 Restaurants: This is probably where I'm looking for the most tips and tricks most. What restaurants have good menu items to choose from and food items should I be looking for? For example, a Big Mac, minus the bun, (which does not sound good right now), LOL. *Full disclosure, my nutrition plan really does not mention meat or salads until week 6 when I can have tuna and baked fish and then add baked chicken, lean ground beef, ground turkey and salads. But, I'm not against trying some of this (in moderation of course), if other plans allow these items sooner. I realize my nutrition plan is exageratingly conservative.

    July 2022 peeps!

She has not mentioned it to me in my two appointments with her and it's not even talked about in my menu/nutrition plan. In a FAQ she sent me last week, it says calories needed depend on gender, age and activity level, but a general rule of thumb is around 1,000 calories a day. The FAQ does not say when to start the "1,000 per day" thing, but I find it somewhat difficult during the liquid phase and I plan to build up to it as I increase my activity level. In the meantime, I'm concentrating on the 90g protein and 64oz fluid/water.

    July 2022 peeps!

Hi, kevin! Did your dietitian set the calorie range? Mine won't. She told me to work on getting 60-90 g of protein. I'm averaging about 700 cal a day. Losing about 1-2 lbs a week. I did lose 10 lbs the first 10 days. Have lost 18 lbs since I started liquid diet 6 weeks ago. Made my first goal of 225 already. I was 252 on my first appointment last June.

    July 2022 peeps!

Hey y'all. I just wanted to post a Three-week update. I feel good. Pretty much normal even. Except, of course, with a smaller stomach capacity Incisions are fully closed. The small ones look good and only the largest still has any leftover scabbing. I'm trying to stay positive since I've lost more than 20 pounds since surgery. But my weight loss progress has slowed more than I thought it would this early. Maybe it's the third week stall we keep hearing about. W1: -12.6 lbs W2: -5.6 lbs W3: -2.6 lbs My conservative diet plan sucks, but it improves a little this week, since I can add cottage cheese, shredded cheese, beans, canned fruit and some specific well-cooked veggies (only carrots and asparagus look appetizing). I am logging everything. I am getting 80-100g of protein, 50-90 oz of water/fluids, and 650-750 calories daily. I have not done great on my steps/walking/exercise, but plan to fix that this week now that things at work has calmed a bit. I have now lost a total of 48.6 lbs since I started losing weight in late March when I had my "Oh Hell No!" moment and contacted the surgeon's office. I am feeling pretty good about that.

    Full liquids - Veggie Soup

Wouldn’t have survived without being able to eat soup. Yes, to making it yourself. Use a bone broth as a base stock to get in your protein & purée & strain well. You can also make a chicken or other meat based soup. Again strain everything out & if you have family they can eat the soup with all the meat & vegetables. You can also strain wonton soup, ramen noodles, etc. & drink the broth.

    Food Before and After Photos

Super proud of my lunch earlier today. 2 eggs, 2 slices of bacon, spinach and mushrooms. 267 calories, 22g protein, 5 net carbs. Dinner on the other hand? Sigh, ended up eating only half. Sesame soy sauce tofu with kimchi, zucchini, and scallions with gochujang (the carbs in this are insane!) for 192 calories, 9g protein and 8net carbs. I did end up looking up several keto gochujang recipes so I’ll probably make and use one of those instead.
  18. I have a serving of the Verisol collagen bioactive peptides by Betha inc. in my coffee every morning. It was ConsumerLab's top pick. I don't count it towards my protein goal for reasons people explained above. I have been using it for almost two years for my skin. It helps with my skin elasticity.
  19. Diarrhoea isn’t uncommon but you seem to be experiencing more than most. Glad you’ve hit in touch with your surgeon. Try some Imodium in the meantime. It was on my list of over the counter meds to have on hand post surgery in case of diarrhoea. Wonder if you have could have developed a temporary intolerance to lactose. It happens. May be worth giving some lactose free or plant based protein shakes & powder a try instead of the traditional lactose based shakes.
  20. hey folks, i am currently 1 week post op and i am experiencing some serious diarrhea. anyone else experience this? did it go aways. ive only been consuming bone broth/protein shakes/and water and i feel like 5 minute after drinking something i have violent diarrhea. i can walk my dog because if i walk 5 feet i will $h1t my self. help!!! i messaged my surgeon but this is scaring me.
  21. Looking for feedback on an idea. I was thinking of making a veggie soup in my instant pot, then blending it so it’s more liquid-phase compliant. I’m so tired of protein shakes and broth, I could scream, and I don’t love canned soup. My only big concern is the tomatoes - my program says no tomatoes/tomato products for the first 3 months because they have too much acid. Anyone done something similar, or have any recipes?

    2 weeks post op

Hello there! I am five days post op and having same issues you had. Did it get better? Today I cried, because I thought I was doing something wrong. The binder of instructions from my dietician needs to be worded better. I called her last night and she talked me off the ledge. We lowered my fluid intake and protein intake to 40/40 until I can tolerate more. But I HATE protein shakes. Going to be an interesting journey!!!

    Nutritionalist consult

you're lucky. My pre-op diet was two weeks of no-cal (or ultra-low-cal) liquids, SF popsicles, SF Jello, and 4-5 protein shakes a day. It was dreadful.

    Nutritionalist consult

My 6 month pre-op diet was high protein, low fat, and low sugar. Protein shakes in between and absolutely no juice/soda. I do drink sugar free juices by Minute Maid.
  25. Just got done with the nutrition consult. Another tick box down! I got a lot of information. Glad that I am already working on food issues!! my pre-op diet will be 3 weeks of carb control (50 carb limit) or meal replacement protein shakes for breakfast, lunch, snack and protein and vegetables for dinner. I believe I will do the carb control. how does this compare t other pre-op diets?
