Dont wish for rapid weight loss, just steady...ive lost 63lbs in 2 1/2 months which is too much too fast. Day before yesterday i passed out whenever i stood up. I ended up back in the hospital for the 6th stay since 11/29/16 surgery...many severe complications, this is just the latest one. So...slow and steady is much safer!! Surgery 2/16, surreal feelings today
mrsmjmillet replied to kalel51's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Absolutely!! I had the lap RNY on Feb 14th. I've pretty much been feeling that way a long time! I'm just trying to tell myself positive things and to follow ALL the drs orders, to decrease any chance of complications. Keep a positive outlook! Hope things continue to go well for you! -
You can disagree but his percentages are based on real studies not people's feelings. Even the most positive band study that recommended the band as a viable option had a 50% complication rate. Hopefully you'll be in the 50% with no issues and you will have a very good malpractice case if you are not because surgeons are well aware of this data now. Make sure you hang onto any data and information your doctor gave you about the band...just in case.

Right? ER is scary here lol. They do not know why it happens. The stomach basically flips and looks like candy cane I am told and nothing can get down. When I was trying to drink the water would fill up my esophagus because the hole to my stomach was blocked with the twist. There is nothing within any of us that would tell us or the doctor that we could have this complication....it is just nature! So glad I have come out the other side fine but others should be prepared just in case....could also be a huge financial burden you know? Four surgeries and a $170k hospital bill for staying 6 nights! Sooo glad my insurance paid 100%! Sent from my SM-N920P using BariatricPal mobile app

Oh no sure don't! Well I had the sleeve done on Friday 12/09/16. But after getting to my hospital room I could never hold down any liquids...I would have 15ml and 15ml would come right back up! It took them 3 days to diagnose that my stomach had twisted....closed! So I had 2 more surgeries and had a stent put in on 12/14 to untwist and open up my stomach. I spent 6 nights in the hospital!! I had surgery again this week on Feb 14th to remove the stent and hallelujah my stomach remained open!! But boy I have been through it. Around Feb 1st the stent wanted to come out so I had a constant bad stomach ache 24/7 and dry heaving 5 to 6 times a day! But all that stopped the moment the stent came out! I have lost 70 lbs during this journey so far!!! I worry for those going out of the country to have surgery as I wonder if they had this same complication and needed to have multiple surgeries and a week hospitalized what would they do? How would someone pay for that let's say in Mexico? It was so scary for me and I was in California with insurance that was paying 100% of these bills!!! Michelle...I'm so sorry to hear of all the complications you've had. That surgeon should be held responsible for his error. That's just horrible. I will keep you in my prayers.

Oh, wanted to add, 10lbs seems like an average number for healthy loss. Not to say someone with a 30lb a month loss HAS to have had a complicated recovery. -

Things like extended hospitalizations for strictures, severe ulcers, leaks, excessive nausea and vomiting.... basically anything that keeps the patient from eating. For the most part, things get fixed, life goes on, and ultimately it was just a big bump in the road that resulted in quick losses. Sometimes we hear about the complications, and sometimes we just see the #s, but don't know the WHY. -

I have noticed that lots of those people that lost significantly more than 10lbs a month also went through complications. BAD complications. Slow and steady wins the race! -
They say nay, but I'm a daredevil and I love gum. Do at your own risk. The complications are just that it can be really hard on your new stomach to digest (since gum is already hard to digest) in the off chance that you swallow it, and since you have a staple line, it can get stuck and it's probably not a pretty picture, but I don't routinely swallow gum and I'm not sure of anyone who does.

I think I must be one of the older ones here I'm 67 but I feel like a kid since the surgery I had VSG in sept 2016 I was 218 now 169 and I'm so happy . I didn't have any complications just tired for a few weeks . I paid for it myself it cost me ten thousand pounds here in the UK and worth every penny . Like everyone else best decision ever just wish I had done it when I was younger . Good luck every one x

Yes, very much so. I got to the point that i vomited EVERY time i tried to eat or drink ANYTHING for the first 2 and a 1/2 months. So i just didnt eat anything. I have been hospitalized 6 times over the past 2 months, too. I spent about 45 days in the hospital during thoae 6 visits...in fact, i just got out of the hospital about 2 hours ago!! I had to be put on TPN at night (nutrition that goes in via a port into my jugular vein) and i have to wear a patch for my nausea behind my ear, i have to take 8mg of zofran to help with it too. I have to take a dose of magic mouth wash (yes, thats really what it is called-it has lidocaine and other stuff in it that numbs my eusopogist because i now have eusopogitis from all the vomiting. And i that reglan afyer every meal...all this kust so i can eat without vomiting after the 1st bite ( but i had other complications: the surgeon cut my spleen during my bypass, my spleen died and was falling apart in my left abdomen which caused abscesses to form there. I had to have a spleenectomy afyer almost 2 months of battling ingection. They had to put drains in 4 times to drain the ingected Fluid out of me. Then my plural cavity around my left lung filled up with 1800 units of fluid in it which caused my left lung to collapse so they put in a chest tube to drain it off...to put it very mildly i have a VERY rougj time since my November 29th gastric bypass surgery. I am sorry to hear thay you are having trouble with food too. I promise the taste of your food Will get better. Have a blessed day...... Michelle

Hi All! I hit my two month mark last week (I was sleeved on 12/09/16) and thought I would share some pics! I have a total weight loss of 70 lbs since the start of my WLS journey! Feeling great and can not wait to see where the next few months take me! I did have a complication with my surgery (twisted stomach) in which I had three additional surgeries and just had a stomach stent removed on 02/14/17 that assisted my stomach to heal from the twist. Although my journey has been different than most, now that my complication has finally been resolved I feel like I can hit the ground running even harder to make bigger and bigger lifestyle changes! I wish everyone the best in their journey! First pic is from 12/16/16 with my surgeon....last two pics are from 02/16/17 showing the changes!

Shoot! I think I have a stricture
msrandi replied to Alexis99's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Unfortunately I'm becoming an expert on structures. The esophagus ones seem to have settled into just inflammation but I have it bad at the bottom of the pouch into small intestines. I've had it dialated multiple times (approximately every 3-4 weeks). But I have had multiple complications including perforations that forced the dr to convert sleeve to bypass as an emergency. So maybe mine is unusually bad. Good luck! -
I experienced the same thing. I used to love water but it tastes metallic to me as well . Drinking crystal light until I can stand plain water. Good to see from vets that it gets better. I'm 4 weeks out, and doing great even though I had a terrible complication as my bowel was incurred by a faulty instrument! Had to have a second surgery to get all the bile out!!!

PICC= Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (common when complications such as sleeve leaks occur)

I second what Nika said. Just hang in there! I had some serious regret my first week with all the complications I had, but every week has gotten better and better and so has my outlook. Don't beat yourself up too badly about not losing a bunch of weight yet. It'll come in time. I was very frustrated because I came home weighing more than what I did my day of surgery. Having to lose the "hospital" weight gain made the first week and a half frustrating, but once I got past that hump things were better. I will say the better I do on my fluids, Vitamins, and Protein the better the weight seems to come off. It does make a difference. Keep your chin up!

Thanks to everyone who responded! To those asking... I misspoke. I meant Sleever's Remorse, basically like buyer's remorse, ie. thoughts like "why did I do this?" I am saying I do NOT feel this way. I'm not being negative, just honest. Some people want an honest account of what it will feel like directly out of surgery. I'm on day 2 and I'm saying it's pretty rough. I haven't ever had any medical complications or surgery before, thankfully, so for me, this recovery has been the worst I ever felt physically. It should be getting better soon though! I can feel the gas pain slowly become less intense, which is such good news.

So I bought one of those scales from costco that is supposed to tell you your body fat %, and the thing just errored on me when I stood on it :-( My BMI is 38. I am pre surgery and hoping to be able to track my fat loss % as an additional way to see progress for the tough times when the scale is not moving. On Amazon I see some that are hand held for around $25. I also see calipers and they look complicated. What does everyone use to measure fat loss?
