Acid reflux AFTER Gastric bypass?
2Bsmaller18 replied to Christina.Rose's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had mild reflux before bypass. Then a year after surgery I began to have what I thought was reflux again. It was almost like I heard not felt bubbling. Like carbonation when I hadn't eaten or drank anything. I switched surgeons for annual follow up and the new surgeon took a contrast x-ray and saw that I have a candy cane or hockey stick off of the pouch and that my pouch had stretched or at least was bigger than the normal despite me never eating more than a half cup of food in one sitting and feeling a lot of restriction. . I think when food or salvia goes into the candy cane and then moves into the pouch it creates that feeling. The new surgeon said some people will have reflux after surgery and I had never heard that from the first surgeon. -

Does age or menopause make a difference with how much weight is lost.

I was 65 when I had bypass surgery. I lost 135 pounds in a year. I started at 249 pounds. All I did was follow what I was told to do with eating directions and my hardest exercise was a treadmill. You have the power to make this work. Go into it with positive thoughts and enjoy the ride. Do your best and let your body do the rest. Good luck. -
Acid reflux AFTER Gastric bypass?
catwoman7 replied to Christina.Rose's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
you can - but it's not common. For most people, bypass improves if not outright cures GERD - but unfortunately, there are a few that it doesn't work for. -
The DS is certainly the preferred solution for bile reflux problems - it's about a sure a fix as you can find. assuming that you have a surgeon who knows how to do it. Looking at the anatomy, and you see that bile has to go many feet down the inactive (non food) channel before it gets to the common channel where it and the pancreatic enzymes, mix with the food, and it would have to move many feet back upstream against the food flow to reflux into the stomach. The bypass is a less certain fix as the pyloric valve has been removed and the pouch moved just downstream of the bile ducts, but it usually isn't a problem if they make the roux limb long enough (sometimes in non-WLS variants of the procedure where they make the limbs shorter to minimize weight loss, bile reflux is a real problem.) As the DS uses the same sleeve that you started with, or maybe a resleeved version, it doesn't usually help with acid reflux, unless the original sleeve was poorly made (it happens, though not too often with a DS surgeon who knows how to make their sleeves.) Virgin DS's tend to be somewhat better on this than the VSG as they usually use a larger sleeve that is less prone to reflux problems. In short, you got the best procedure available for your bile problem - be happy.

Has anyone else experienced GERD after the Gastric bypass? I got the bypass after my sleeve was causing my stomach acid to burn lesions in my esophagus. A year has gone by, but for the last few months I have been getting really bad heartburn again. I'm getting an endoscopy next week, but I can't seem to find anything about what this could be. The ironic thing, is that I was a smoker for years, but NOW I don't smoke and rarely drink, but my acid feels worse than when I was smoking etc. This happens if I eat or not, when I wake up sometimes, I can't seem to pinpoint a reason. Please let me know if anyone else has been through this. Sent from my moto g(7) supra using BariatricPal mobile app

Does age or menopause make a difference with how much weight is lost.
Maisey replied to Ready_4_Change🐝's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
My surgeon advocated for bypass over the sleeve due to my being menopausal (among other reasons). He said age and hormones definitely impact weight loss. -

I’m on the 4th day of my 14 day pre-op diet and been trying to google/research everything I can about the gastric bypass. I came upon an article that essentially said that older and menopausal women are slow to lose and not as great results. I figured this was the place to find out the deal from my peers. I just turned 50, so this article definitely got my mind thinking. What are your experiences or thoughts? I would love to hear.c -
Any March Surgeries?
Lahela replied to Hopefulin2021's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The biddgest port definitely hurts the most. Wanna know some interesting information. If u have gastric bypass they leave the stomach inside 🤯 I dont know about the sleeve, since I have gastric bypass. But I thought that was very interesting when my surgeon told me that. Glad you are progressing well. I m 8 days out and no more gas pain but still have muscle pain. -
1 week post-op I feel very weak and out of breath
PuraVida37 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi guys, one week out from lap band revision to sleeve. I'm doing ok pain-wise, but I'm just so weak and even getting up off the couch to walk across the room makes me feel like I've sprinted. I was checked by my doctor and spent the day in the ER doing cat scans for blood clots, EKG, blood work. Everything was normal. But I am definitely not. I'm fine if I'm sitting on the couch, but moving around, even to prepare the small meals has got me exhausted. Is this normal? Is it due to taking in so few calories? What am I doing wrong? Yes, I'm taking my vitamins and meeting protein and mostly meeting liquids goals. I'm on Lovenox as a preventative for blood clots. -
Strange - that's exactly what I wanted at about the same stage after my bypass. I did actually lick the coating off a couple which helped get rid of the craving....

Band to Bypass

Thank you! Did you lose more weight with bypass versus the sleeve? -
I never had any regrets when I had my lap band put in 11+ years ago, despite getting horrible GERD and that the band likely causing my hiatal hernia. And I really don't think I will regret my revision to a VSG two weeks ago either. Not to go to "a dark place" in this thread but honestly, the point that my bariatric surgeon brought up in the seminar when I was considering the lap band years ago was "Why is it that you never see anyone who is old and obese? Because if you're obese you generally don't make it to old age." That has just stayed with me ever since. Wishing you all the best on your journey!!

Band to Bypass

I had sleeve to bypass in October 2020 for GERD etc. After the initial 2 weeks, I have been very happy with the results. Not just weight loss, but no more GERD, reflux, vomiting....... -
Coffee after gastric bypass
mae7365 replied to Michele 2021's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I guess I'm a rebel who started back on coffee a month after bypass. I limit it to 2 cups in the morning, use sugar free coffee creamer and I'm a much happier person for it. I'm all about the long term sustainability of my weight loss, so I don't want to give up and/or deprive myself of the small pleasures like coffee. -
I would not do the band. In fact, hardly any surgeons place the band anymore - there have been way too many problems with them, and many people have had them replaced with sleeve or bypass. Sleeve is a good option as long as you don't have GERD. honestly, complications with either bypass or sleeve aren't that common and are usually minor. For some reason there's the opinion out there that these are really risky surgeries and you're bound to have a lot of problems, but it just isn't true. Yes you'll always find people who've had a ton of problems with weight loss surgeries (both sleeve and bypass), but for the vast majority of us, we sail through them just fine and have no issues. The only thing different about my life now (other than being 200 lbs lighter) is that I now have to take vitamins every day (and of course, I eat less that before)

Weight Loss Medication for Regain?
Queen of Crop replied to Queen of Crop's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
Thank you Mae for the response. Wow, your story is so interesting. First, looks like we are about the same height and age and lost the same amount and have the same weight goal. I felt best at 138 and am now 158. And you just had a bypass after having the sleeve in 2015. Fascinating. It's been so long since I have been on here I didn't really know that was an option so maybe I will look into it. I keep thinking I can get this extra 20lbs off. I would like to try phentermine but I don't think I can get it here in Amsterdam and am assuming it is by prescription only? Anyway, it looks like you are back to goal, so congratulations! I felt so free at that weight and just cannot seem to get there on my own. Thank you for the response. -
Does anyone here regret having had gastric bypass surgery? ** nope. Not for a minute. I'd do it every year if I had to. Best decision I've ever made!! I keep hearing about the downsides: adhesions, forever being careful of what to eat, dumping, stricture, malabsorption, etc. ** first, the downside of remaining obese - high risk of diabetes, heart issues, early death. As far as gastric bypass downsides that you mentioned: Adhesions - very rare Forever being careful of what to eat: you'd have to do this if you lost weight the old-fashioned way, too, if you wanted to maintain your loss. Dumping: 30% of us dump. I never have -- and I know lots of others who never have, either. If you turn out to be a dumper, it's controlled by avoiding or limiting sugar (or fats - some people dump on fats). These are things we should be doing anyway. Stricture: happens to 5% of us. Minor issue and very easy fix. Malabsorption: 1) calorie malabsorption is what gives us a leg up on weight loss. It lasts a year or two. 2) nutrient malabsorption - rare as long as you keep on top of your vitamins I think a lot of us once had the same concerns. I did too - which is why it took me ten years to take the plunge. And now my only regret is that I waited so long to do it. If you don't feel you're mentally ready for it, then maybe now isn't the time to do it. It takes some serious dedication and I think you really have to be in the right mindset to be successful. But seriously, it really is the best decision I've ever made. Should have done it years ago.

Does anyone here regret having had gastric bypass surgery? I’m still in the preop stage. I keep hearing about the downsides: adhesions, forever being careful of what to eat, dumping, stricture, malabsorption, etc. I’m getting scared to move forward. Part of me feels like I can lose weight with my doctors help (I’ve already lost 40 pounds, 80 to go). The other part of me says okay, you have surgery and lose the weight then what?? You’re stuck with the side effects? I’m getting scared and about to talk myself out of it. I’d like to hear your story and of you had similar thoughts are you still happy with the surgery?

I know coffee is not allowed immediately after a gastric bypass but can you eventually reintroduce coffee back.Into your diet?
-
Hi! About 12 years ago I had the lap band. I started at about 280 lbs and got down to 200 lbs but now I’m back to about 240 lbs (I should be around 140 lbs). I have terrible reflux, morning bile in my throat, and vomiting multiple times a week. I found a great revision doctor and he has approved me for revision to gastric bypass. I’m going in on 4/23 to make sure my band has slipped so that insurance pays. But regardless (I will self pay at this point- even if I have to sell plasma), I’m having the bypass and I’m so excited. Any one out there that can give me some good advice? What to expect? I appreciate any guidance!! Thank you so much! 💜

1st Denial due to weight gain from medication
jmarie26 replied to sleepyowl85's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Are you limited to the McLaren network? If not, I recommend Dr. Stalin- he is part of the Ascension network. He used to split his time between Genesys and St. Mary's (Saginaw), but since COVID, he has consolidated down to just one office- in Saginaw. When I went to a group informational appointment (pre-COVID), I met people who were getting a revision with him- from both Hurley and McLaren. From what I gathered, the program his office has set up is the best in the area. -
I used phentermine for a couple months before my bypass surgery in 2020. I had gained 50 of the 60 pounds I had lost after my sleeve in 2015. My primary care let me take phentermine for 6 months and I lost 20 pounds. It curbs appetite, but you still have to work at good food choices, exercise etc. Plus that drug has been around forever and is pretty cheap - like $25 for 30 pills (my insurance wouldn't cover it, so I used GoodRX).
