Considering a lap band - scared after reading this forum!
rnj replied to Elrix's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
See how many are having revisions from lap band to sleeve and you'll know that you'll be headed that way too. I opted for a mini bypass....due to only one connection and not 2 as in rny! Band now being abandoned by top surgeons worldwide. BornFat -
Considering a lap band - scared after reading this forum!
Viviparker replied to Elrix's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
The lap Band I had was in for 14 years. It did NOT control my appetite. I was 280 when I had it and my best ever weight was 210. I had it when bariatric surgery was new and now there are more effective options like the Sleeve or a Gastric Bypass. As you are scared why not try the Gastric balloon? This will control your appetite and restrict eating without surgery. If you have surgery this will not be an option in the future. I had my lap and removed in 2015 and it was embedded, difficult to remove and had caused adhesions, I am struggling to keep my weight down. I need an appetite suppressant but there are none available in the UK. I consider myself too old for a revision. Personally I would not chose the Lapband again,it is just not very effective. Good luck anyway. -
Hello Third time should definitely be the charm for you, I hope it goes well. I can relate, last 4+ months have been hell, horrible GERD, no solids for months...getting tired of pureed soups, as they at the only things that don't get "stuck" and cause severe pain, vomiting, etc. Tired of having to supplement w/ protein powder all the time. They missed the hiatal hernia (how?) with first endoscopy and hospital stay back in Feb. Had the barium swallow last month...radiologist saw the hernia right away. Had another endoscopy a week ago, confirmed fixed hiatal hernia (medium in size). Now I'm on more meds, waiting for blood work results to check for vitamin deficiencies.... and, not too thrilled that I will be needed to take a road trip to have the torture manometry test before they decide whether to do a Nissen procedure or just go ahead and do the revision to gastric bypass. I'm hoping for the latter. Had my sleeve back in Nov 2016. For me, I hope the 2nd time is the charm. Good luck w/ your surgery!

Lap band to bypass... I need assurance this won’t be another failure
Road Runner replied to swimmer0302's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had a revision in 12/17 and the weight loss after bypass has been great! My band was put in 2007 and I never lost significant weight with it. The risk of complications is higher with a revision so make sure you take really good care of yourself afterwards and listen to your body! Wishing you the best! -
I have my next appointment with my surgeon on May 31st. I'm going to ask about revision to a bypass. Acid reflux is seemingly becoming more of a problem, which after carousing around the forums I discovered it's not uncommon for GERD symptoms to be kept at bay for awhile only to hit heavy after a year or two. My weight loss was ok at first going down about 70 lbs, but then I gained roughly 25 lbs back and I've been steady at that weight for...gosh...a year? And yet I'm still a 39 BMI so I refuse to believe that's where my body "wants to be." My portion sizes are also nowhere near what I'd expect if the forums are anything to ride home about. I can eat and am hungry for essentially normal, full meals...certainly no "I only eat 1 cup of food at 5 years out" kind of diet.
Just worried that it'd end up being an open procedure because I have a lot of scar tissue from previous urological surgeries.

Is it supposed to be so painful???
UKHEIDI replied to Sdc04c's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi I had gastric sleeve 4 years ago and didn’t have pain you are experiencing however, because of GERD, had revision to bypass . Then everything you describe was my painful experience like others had all sorts of tests when still there at week 4 which revealed nothing. At week 6 , I moved awkwardly and something ripped. I was in agony for 2 days . Then 2 days after that, all pain resolved met with surgeon and he told me that he had double stitched the muscle as he was concerned about hernia risk. Its worth getting checked out but if they find nothing , then it is part of healing process hope you get better soon -
Considering a lap band - scared after reading this forum!

currently in other countries there are class action suits. I really loved my band.. worked great until i lost my sweet spot. only to come to realize silent damage was going on . then one day went from mild to HOLY COW WTF. got it removed as so as i was healed and able to have revision surgery. in 6 months while waiting i packed on 50lbs. i still ate correctly i just ate all the time non stop. look into the band heavily before you make the leap. they are all tools if you use them correctly you will succeed. my boyfriend is doing awesome with the sleeve. i am new to RNY. from the band . -
I feel that way, too. I'm very underwhelmed with my sleeve's restriction at two years out. While heavy, dense foods are definitely restricted, calorie dense, slider like foods aren't. Only lost about 50 lbs of the 150 lbs or so I needed to lose to be at goal weight so I'm considering revision. I agree with your sentiment...if we could have been this conscientious about our diet before, surgery would be unnecessary if it weren't for the metabolic changes it has which greatly improves diabetes for those of us that had it.

Piece left behind after revision surgery??
pattys1096 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had lap-band to sleeve surgery April 9, 2018. My original lap band was successful for about 2 years, then it broke somehow and needed to be replaced. Before the replacement, I began vomiting and having daily reflux. I also felt a constant poking pain in my rib cage whenever I exercised. I had gotten down to 145 lbs from a start weight of 235 lbs, but vomited daily. The band was replaced, but never worked for me again. I began gaining weight immediately after surgery and got back up to 225 lbs before having sleeve revision surgery. The day after surgery I had a barium swallow X-Ray done and learned a part from the first band that was replaced nearly 3 years ago had broken off, and floated through my abdomen and is now lodged in my left rib cage (explaining the poking feeling the doctor told me was all in my head when I brought it up 3 years ago!) I was told by my sleeve doctor (who is a different doctor from the lap band doctor- but a partner in the medical practice) he could remove it during an office visit or just leave it if it didn't start to bug me. I am not sure about all this. Any suggestions? -
When is it appropriate to consider revision?
Kaze replied to Kaze's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Will do. I'm still definitely considering it. I've made a few dietary adjustments and my weight has at least trended back down to where I WAS prior to a few months ago which is still ~25 lbs more than my lowest weight. I read some information about revision that confirmed AtlantaRed's comment about the general WLS diet being 800-1000 calories, and knowing I can eat almost double that (though it's probably less since that food diaryhad a lot of less than ideal choices such as fast food, shame on me) which is definitely fueling me to ask about it. I also heard reflux that doesn't go away is another thing to consider getting a revision to bypass for...I definitely still have GERD! Ugh! -

Hey Bryn! I was following up to see if you got your revision to bypass! I see you now belong to Gastric Bypass Patients so I assume you did. How are you doing and feeling? Edit: I see, May 9th! Good luck, one week! -
Did I lose too much to qualify?
mamalala replied to jessicakeslosing's topic in Insurance & Financing
Yes they send your weight from your first appointment. I also had Blue Cross Blue Shield Federal and I didn't think I was going to get approved because my BMI was too low but I had the lap band and I had it removed because it slipped in 2016. I wanted to get the revision sooner but I didn't think I was a candidate because of my weight but it was approved it took over a week I didn't know until the day before my surgery but thank God it was approved Sent from my SM-G920T1 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Gastritis and hiatal hernia
tanya27 replied to MissPriss81's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had the sleeve done back in 2014. I’ve had GERD for most of the time. I recently had an endoscopy and they found a hiatal hernia. Almost immediately upon finding out about my hernia, i was approved for revision surgery on May 8th to get the gastric bypass. Good luck!! -
I was banded 3/13/12 and I did well with my band the 1st year. I lost 100lbs but found out I was pregnant 5/9/13, had the baby 12/18/13 and everything went haywire after. My band slipped and I just got it removed no one here in Jax Fl would revise it so now I’m waiting for my stomach to heal so I can have the sleeve.

What sleevers need to know: After 6 months the tight restriction starts to fade. At about a year or more out you will definitely be able to hold more food. Understand your stomach is not back to full size. Only a small percentage of sleeves that need revision. The problem is when people confuse grazing with stomach capacity/stretching. If you eat several meals with excess calories. (Can be healthy or unhealthy food choices) you will start seeing weight gain. I can easily get in 3000 calories in a day if I graze. The sensation is as if I didn't have surgery at all. Surgery does not take away hunger for most of us. You will feel head and real hunger. Eating sugar and carbs will make you crave them more and increase your hunger level. . My disclaimer: low carb is not everyone's weight loss plan. (carbs may/will increase maintaining and higher fitness level. ( if you gain go back to low carb or your plan) If you are struggling with the extra space and hunger : Some tips to keep you full and satisfied within your calorie range. (I'm not a medical professional this is just my experience/opinion) increase your protein goal. Add veggies. The bulk and fiber will help fill the increased stomach volume Detox off carbs and sugar. Keep healthy sweet and salty snacks on hand for cravings night snacking or head hunger - Buy a veggie tray. If you are at the end of your daily calorie allotment for weight loss mode. Eat from your veggie tray. If you try to bargain with yourself for another option then you know its head hunger.

Sorry so late replying, didn't check the sight over the weekend. I am doing well. Never had a lot of pain just soreness. When I started my journey August of 2017 the Medical Center was not a Blue Cross and Blue Shield distinction center. In 2018 they became a BCBS distinction center, but I had already invested with the surgeons in Atlanta so I stuck with them. Had the Medical Center been a distinction center in 2017 when i started I would have very much considered them. I had a revision surgery from Lap-Band to RNY. My doctor thought the bypass would be the best option for me especially since I had severe diabetes. I hope you have great success with you surgery.

Just had revision from Sleeve to SIPS
disco stu replied to disco stu's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Not sure to what degree I stretched out my sleeve. I definitely can't eat as much as I used to pre-VSG all in one sitting, but at the same time, I can drink beer or other carb beverages without any problem which isn't supposed to be the case. What's interesting is that I asked my surgeon pre-op if he was going to tighten my sleeve while he was in there adding the DS, and he said, "No, it's been proven that revising an old sleeve doesn't work." Things are just really strange right now. I feel better. Things are looking better in the mirror. I'm getting compliments about losing weight. I know for a hard fact that my appetite is way down (in part because I feel nauseous pretty much all the time). I'm in the restroom 6 to 10 times a day and have yet to have a single solid BM (which tells me the DS is working.) But the scale is stuck again. Hasn't moved in the last 4 days. Sigh. Take yesterday: I'm a dude and I ate probably around 1000 - 1500 calories tops... and it wasn't even hard. One of the people we were at brunch with even said "You eat like a chick." Nothing to eat past 5:00. Got on scale this AM.... nada. No change. -
SLEEVE REVISION TO GASTRIC BYPASS

Thank you all for your responses! I appreciate it! Please keep us updated on your revisions journeys and i will do so as well! I wish you all the best! -
My surgeon won’t even do the band anymore because of the risks and potential to revise it. Most insurances (if your insurance covers it) will only pay for one surgery.

Just had revision from Sleeve to SIPS
Strivingforbetter replied to disco stu's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I've always felt my weight loss has been slow, so thiank you. Right now, I'm lucky if I lose 3 pounds in a month. I don't know about the amount of weight a person loses with a revision, but the DS is the mac daddy of weight loss surgery so I would think it would be just as powerful as a revision unless you've stretched out your sleeve. I still have pretty good restriction. -
I wish I never had this done...help!
Ktallon replied to ~Primrose~'s topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi I too was in this same situation after having gastric sleeve last year. Mine was due to a stricture in the middle of the stomach pouch. This was found by doing an endoscopy. I was on picc lines and feeding tubes for dehydration and severe malnutrition. My doctor decided the only option was to revise to the full bypass. (This was after he attempted dilation and placing a stent). Having a revision was not ideal but at 4 months out from revision i am glad i did. No more vomiting i have regained my strength and best part no more tubes coming out of my body. Message me if you want to talk more. -
Sleeve or bypass, how did you choose?
annie93 replied to TaylorMade4One's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Why are you doing the revision? Is it due to reflux or weight loss issues? I currently have the lap band in place and will have that stupid thing removed, but my doctor said I could do either one. I'm perplexed so I'm glad for this thread.
