It sounds like you're doing quite well. I couldn't do the protein shakes, either, but my saving grace was Chobani brand Greek yogurt. Each small container provides 14g of protein. It takes me about 20-30 minutes to eat one but I try to get in 4 per day. I focus on other types of protein (cheese, salmon, tuna, beef) for other meals. I'm not eating raw fruits or vegetables yet--still on "mushy" foods.

I had surgery on 11/1/12. I feel hungry. Is this normal? I feel I need more than a Protein shake, yogurt or broth which is my week 2 diet. Any suggestions?

2 Tablespoons of Food. Really?
JamieLogical replied to Slimsoon1988's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That doesn't sound right. Yogurt was considered a "full liquid" for the purposes of my diet stages, so I was allowed to have as much of it as I could tolerate. -
2 Tablespoons of Food. Really?
BLERDgirl replied to Slimsoon1988's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Talk to your nutritionist. Goals/nutrition needs will vary not only program to program, but also for men vs women. For the record you are eating what I probably couldn't eat until about 4 weeks out. Even at 6 mths my calories are probably lower than most. That is an odd requirement. I have always eaten yogurt. If my nutritionist told me that we would have to have a really long conversation. I agree, I prefer Fage as a dessert over a pudding with artificial ingredients and fake sugar any day of the week. -
2 Tablespoons of Food. Really?
minniegirl replied to Slimsoon1988's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So clearly we are all very different in what we are advised to do and also with the amounts we can tolerate. From day seven I was allowed purees, Soups, cottage cheese, tuna, scrambled egg & yogurt. I could eat 2-3 ounces depending on what it was. 2 tablespoons? wouldn't have cut it for me. Now I am 5 weeks out and can eat 2-4 ounces depending (more dense Proteins are more filling) but generally I weigh my meals to between 3-3 1/2 ounces and usually finish it. My surgeon says he makes his patients sleeves slightly larger than the norm, so this may be why I can eat a little more. I have had virtually zero issues, no nausea, vomiting or severe pain/discomfort that I was so terrified of before surgery. I am certainly NOT suggesting that you go against your program, but I do agree that your protocol seems pretty conservative. Maybe your surgeon makes his sleeves on the smallish side, ONLY you will know what feels right once you start. My NUT gave me a piece of advice that is so simple yet brilliant. She said " if you REALLY listen to your body you will not go wrong". -
90 grams of protein a day---need ideas...please
VSGayle replied to huligoo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I, too, used the Premier Protein Shakes and was getting sick of them after surgery (I am about 9 weeks out). I read someone else's tip to add instant coffee to the chocolate premier shake and now I drink that every morning because it tastes sooo good I add ice to water it down just a bit and add a Tablespoon of instant decaf coffee (before I add the ice)...it's like having a mocha coffee. I usually have a Fage yogurt for breakfast and by the time I am done showering and getting ready for work, I can start drinking this shake while I drive to work...easy routine! and 43 grams of protein by the time I get to work -
I make a salad with a packet of tuna. If I'm not full then I will eat my yogurt as well but usually I don't. Sometimes I will eat a slice of pizza or have a sandwich with a small bag of chips. It all depends.

How much can you eat 4+ years post-op?
catwoman7 replied to middlet's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had RNY but it's probably similar. I don't go by ounces anymore - I just know that it takes about 1600 calories to maintain my current body weight, so I try to stay around there (or under if I want to lose a few pounds). And the above person is right - the number of oz depends on the food. I can easily eat 8 oz of yogurt. But a piece of meat? No way. Maybe 2 or 3 oz. btw - no one would be able to tell now that I've had weight loss surgery. They'd just assume I'm a "light eater", just like lots of my female friends are who've never had a weight problem. I'll go to a restaurant and order a salad or an appetizer. Or I'll get an entree and eat half of it (and box up the rest to take home). -
I just tried activa yogurt today and it is making a difference with those growls. It was too thick for me to eat out of the carton so I added some skim milk. It was the perfect consistency, tasted good and did what I wanted. Later I added 1/2 of one to my shake. I was looking for juice called GOOD BELLY ( I heard on another thread about this.) I couldn't find it here in my little country store. I'll look again in Walmart. But I think the activa has the same properties as it has settled my growling stomache. I went on my first outing today, to church. I thought I was going to die after putting on my panty hose! Please don't anyone try that- it hurts! I got tired at church from standing too long. I sat down and was fine the rest of the service. It feels good to get out of the house even for an hour. Tomorrow I wall try to walk around the block. Thanks for recovering with me ladies! I appreciate all your insights and support.

Breakfast ideas that don't involve EGGS!
ParrotheadCathy replied to thecooley's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I don't like "regular" yogurt but I LOVE Greek yogurt with honey. Another poster on this site suggested it to me. I was very leary because I really, really don't like yogurt but she promised me it was different. I tried a version that was vanilla flavored and that went right in the trash, LOL. But the honey was fantastic. I buy Greek Gods Greek Yogurt with Honey at Kroger. But Fage and Chobani are two other brands and I think WalMart carries one or both of those. Grits. yeah, I'm a Southern girl alright! I cook them in the microwave, add a little Promise "margarine" and a little bit of shredded low fat cheese and really enjoy that. -

Don't worry about the carbs in oatmeal. Oatmeal has a low glycemic index along with being high in fiber, so it's a "good" carb. On top of that, it tends to be filling and stays filling for a while. Just watch out for the flavored kind with lots of added sugar, I suggest getting plain and flavoring it yourself, I keep a shaker of cinnamon/Splenda blend just for oatmeal and greek yogurt. -

I too really like the Greek Yogurt..I use the Chobani brand... I really like the Peach one the best... I buy it at my grocery store, but I have never seen it at my Walmart.... you say you don't like yogurt, try the Greek Yogurt, it is thicker then the regular yogurt, so you might find that you like it. -
I am day 4 of my Pre-Op diet and I am beginning to question the purpose for a full liquid as opposed to high protein/ low carb diet. I am aware that the main purpose is to decrease the glycogen stores in the liver hence causing it to shrink. You are also suppose to loose some fat around the liver for a safer surgery. My issue is you can do the same without having to suffer such a limited diet the full liquid offers. My liquid diet allows me to have creamed soup which has 4g of carbs and 160 calories, as opposed to a can of tuna in water that I used to make a tuna salad using yogurt instead of mayo wrapped in lettuce leaves. That tuna salad meal was a total of 2g carbs and only 120 calories. Let me tell you, it tasted like a steak dinner after all the soup and broth consumed over the past 3 days. If I was allowed to eat like that for 2 weeks, the pre-op diet would be a piece of cake. You will also loose weight because your body will start to burn off its own fat stores when the liver's fat is used up. But to limit a person to all liquids for two weeks seems like a punishment, when there are more desirable choices that offer the same results. Why don't these doctors use the high protein/low carb diet as opposed to the full liquid? Is there another reason I'm not considering?

I was allowed three shakes and three additions (yogurt, unsweetened applesauce, and fat free sugar free pudding and all the jello I️ wanted) it was hard but I made it. It wasn’t easy but it’s doable! YOU CAN DO IT!!!

I love those! I use them sort of like mini taco shells (with taco meat, lettuce, tomato, and plain Greek yogurt). The loaded taco flavor is also good for that. Have you tried the spicy sweet chili flavor? They have a lot of good reviews, but I haven't tried them because I've only seen them in an 8-pack and I don't want to buy that many when I don't know if I'll like them.

Do you have any restriction? That seems like an awful lot of bread to eat with restriction. Instead of milk why not add your cereal to some Nonfat yogurt and fruit?

Exercise Schmexercise (or Liar, Liar, Plants for Hire)
juliansmom2003 replied to erikaw1971's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well to be honest, I don't think anyone hated exercise more than me (not saying you do). I have a 4 year old and a 6 year old that are very demanding, so I will take them on huge walks with me to the custard stand to get a frozen yogurt or water ice (where I will treat myself to a nice, BIG water LOL) so they have incentive to walk with me. I am thinking of buying a bike so we can all go riding, but believe me, I get the fact that it's hard having kids and most of the responsibilities that come with having them most of the time (my hubby works all the time too). What I did do was I went onto Comcast OnDemand and hit some of the free exercise videos there. There are a couple called "Walk for Weightloss" (Leslie Sansone is the instructor)--they have a 1-mile/15 minute brisk walk and a 2-mile/30 minute brisk walk and it incorporates a bunch of other movements in there so you burn more calories than you normally would taking a regular walk or walking on the treadmill. If you don't have comcast, you can buy those dvds relatively cheap. I now do the Wii Fit, Just Dance on the Wii (which my kids LOVE doing with me) and my new favorite is Hip Hop Abs (LOVE this workout)!!! Starting to integrate the Chalean Extreme to keep things fresh, but even though sometimes I'm not motivated to exercise (tired or may have had a long day), honestly, afterward, I feel SO good when I do. It's something I do for myself and it really feels good to know I'm working hard toward my goal when I could've given in and just laid down after work (even though that's what I want to do most of the time :-))!! Swimming is also an EXCELLENT way to get your exercise in! I've been bugging hubby to get the freaking pool open--now that he has it's been in the 60s since then :-( --just can't win! I can't wait to start getting back in the pool! REALLY great exercise, something to do with the kids and lots of fun too!! You'll fall into a groove soon. You just need to find something that works for you. They say walking is the best exercise, so try to check out those Leslie Sansone DVDs!! -
I now have 5cc worth of saline in my band and I am a happy camper! I'm on liquids until tomorrow morning, and I can move to soft foods like yogurt and cream soups. Friday I can start to resume a regular diet again...or at least, as regular as I have been. If you haven't had a fill yet, it's really not that bad. I think I was pretty anxious about it for nothing. She felt around for my port, and when she found it, gave me some lidocaine first via a tiny injection that I didn't even feel. However, because I was pretty sore from overextending myself the other day, it didn't numb me as well as it could have. When the needle for the fill went in, I didn't feel it at first, but then I could tell it was there. It just felt sore, not a sharp pain or anything. I am entirely convinced if my muscle wasn't so sore it would have been absolutely effortless. I can TOTALLY already tell the difference in restriction. My protein shake went down a LOT slower! Heading to the gym tomorrow morning to work out with my trainer. I have hired him for two months, twice a week, to get me in a routine. Best money I ever spent, besides the cost of the band!

Intense pain in pouch after taking pain meds
kiss-my-kitty replied to HelenaMarie83's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I have the same reaction to Tylenol 3 and Tylenol 4 - my bariatric surgeon chalks it up to an increased sensitivity to Tylenol. What about straight hydrocodone or oxycodone, or even dilaudid or morphine? I'm not sure what the culprit in Tramadol is, as I take it PRN for herniated discs and a shoulder injury and have had no issues with it. Does it help to "sandwich" pills in some cheese or yogurt? Take a bite of the food and swallow, take the pill, then take another bite. I did that in the past while taking anti-depressants, since they can cause minor stomach irritation and I have had problems with ulcers (TWO emergency perforations; and two ulcers in between - I have bi-annual EGDs to keep track of them, and am on lifetime prescriptions of Protonix and Carafate). -
Struggling with junk food.
McButterpants replied to youthguy80's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Good point...I went to the grocery store right before my lunch the other day and I was feeling hungry. I ended up buying some Greek Yogurt pretzels. I grabbed two and ate them - my husband grabbed the bag and put them in the back seat. He told me I should wait until we got home to eat a real meal. (Prior to surgery I would have gotten really mad at him, but now I'm thankful - he's watching out for me.) -
So, I use myfitnesspal.com and you can set that up pretty easily, but it does sometimes feel overwhelming because they have such a huge database so when you look up "boneless skinless chicken thigh" there might be 30 options. They're all about the same, just different brands, but if it's a single ingredient, the differences are so small it doesn't really matter. Just enter in the ingredient by weight in grams or ounces, or if it's like a banana or a cucumber, it might say "1 medium banana" or "1 8 inch cucumber". You can also enter that you eight 1/2 or .25 of the banana or cucumber. If you have a brand name ingredient, like you bought " Dannon light and fit greek yogurt" you can just type that in and up it comes! And it usually doesn't matter what flavor you chose, because almost always all the flavors have the same nutrition. However if you actually got Chobani greek yogurt, that might have twice as many calories/carbs because that's sweetened with sugar instead of artificial sugar. Hope that helps!

when i was did puree week, i found that adding a "flavourless" (i mean, it's NOT flavourless, but it's alright) protein powder (at least 30g protein per serve) to yogurt really helped me. that and protein powder with low-fat milk and fruit blitzed to smoothie consistency. proud of you, you can get over the hill!

Recovery from Band Removal vs. Sleeve Surgery?
GutBgone replied to Bndtoslv's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
What happens if you eat until stuffed? You don't lose weight, and you risk stretching your new stomach out. The removal of the grehlin hormone production site helps. I'm finding I don't go from normal to hungry to famished - I go from normal to normal to famished. There doesn't seem to be much tummy rumbling either (of course now that I'm thinking about it, my stomach just let off a grumble, so it must be psychological). About every 4 hours, I need food. For example: breakfast-an egg, lunch a slice of ham and a slice of cheese (a non- bread sandwich), mid-afternoon a yogurt, dinner 3 Swedish meatballs, evening pudding. But, I'm still home, so when I get more active next week, this may change. Still, I'm only eating about 500-800 calories a day right now. -
@@Kristin Irvine it is hard! I had my surgery August 5 too. I'm still having to supplement with Protein powders or drinks to get enough. I put protein in my Water -- either part of a New whey bullet or 1/2 a package of unjury strawberry with some Crystal light. I get really full on things like grilled salmon or tuna steaks (I'm a pescatarian -- don't eat read meat, pork, or poultry.) So, I'm eating a lot of those foil pouches of tuna, which are packed with protein. I have one of those almost every day for lunch or cottage cheese, which is another good source for me, and of course Greek yogurt. And tofu. I'm weird, I know, but I love tofu, and it's really easy for me to digest. Are you following the rule to eat protein first? That's the most important thing, I find. That way, I don't fill up on other foods first. (As a result, I'm probably not getting enough Fiber. Sigh.)

Amount of food...Kinda freaking out!
Jordan861 replied to snowkitten's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 4 days from being 2 mths post op. Basically I eat what ever I want - the thicker the food the less I eat. Yogurt - about 4 oz... Fish about 2 oz and a little less than one egg. On the average between 1/4 and 1/2 cup is max.
