  1. This is one of my concerns with the "self pay" route. I completely understand that some insurance plans don't cover WLS and there needs to be a self pay option. On the other hand I have seen people: who are 50-60 pounds over weight getting WLS. getting questionable "revisions". choosing self pay because their insurance denied them or required them to "jump through hoops" Seems like some minimal requirements, like maybe a referral from your primary care provider, Should be required for getting major surgery instead of a credit card with a high spending limit. There is a thread here started a few days ago by a woman who went to a surgeon for a pre op interview who was told she could have surgery the NEXT DAY if she had the funds. Another case of greed trumping ethics.
  2. I had a tummy tuck long ago before i even had children now that i'm going to be loosing about 80 lbs i just know im going to need a revision. Revisions from what i have heard are a little more riskier. Just because there is a whole lot of scar tissue and blood supply isnt as good. If i were you i would just buy a good girdle and wait until your weight stablizes. Your skin might shrink a little give it some time. Here is the type of girdle thats my favorite its the classic from lipoexpress.com check them out a little pricy but theyre bullet proof.. i love it.. It gives you a great silouette when you're wearing them its a temp fix until you're to goal.

    alcohol/420

I must put this out there. I was banded in 08, went from 272 to 185 and loved it. Then life hit me smack pat in the kisser. My husband lost his job & we moved to a very 420 friendly state - literally. South FL to Vermont and I was clinically depressed so I utilized the good ole' for depression - without a "wake & bake" I wouldn't do anything. Once I par took I was up doing my thing get a groove on. However, I ruined my band. Just found out its slipped and being taken out. Now can I say it was from the EXCESSIVE DAILY "medical mary" - no, but I coughed like a fiend! I got stuck because yes the munchies do happen, but Ben & Jerry's was my main friend. Now I didn't gain my weight until recently, but I'm not certain it wasn't to my failed attempts at living normal in a bad place. Now my sad news - band is coming out, hopefully insurance is going to pay for revision to the sleeve, not sure yet and I've gained - 242lbs is my current weight. All I'm saying here is pay attention to your choices and make good ones. A drink, red wine, no vodka tonics, or rum & cokes - leave the carbonation out, and a little puff-puff here and there is one thing, but make good life choices - SPOKEN FROM SOMEONE WHO'S been there, done it. I'm more sad now buying "Fat clothes" again. All said with love
  4. Hi everyone, I'm just starting on this journey and have mete with my surgeon who mentioned SIPS surgery (Stomach Intestinal Pylorus Sparing). From what I understand it's somewhat of a combination of gastric bypass and duodenal switch surgery. I am not finding much research on it at all, which makes me wonder if it's a good choice. My surgeon advised he will do either surgery ( I'm pretty well set in mind with GP, but am open to options). He described the effects of increased weight loss, lowered rate of ulcers, strictures, & bowel obstructions, increased absorption of nutrients, lowered risk of diarrhea, increased hormonal changes. Has anyone ever had this done or seen much information about it? I still have more than enough time to decide, so I'm in no rush to make a decision. I'd love to hear your experiences with this!

    Bypass vs sleeve

Hi, I was confused as you are for a while, because I have friends that have had the bypass and then some with the sleeve. They both are doing well but I have to say the deciding factor for me was the fact that the sleeve does let you eat anything you want without the dumping and you know when enough is enough without overeating. I had my sleeve surgery Oct 1st and I have gone from 252lbs to 213lbs. I am very pleased with my results so far and I don't at all regret this decision. Everyone loses at a different pace, so don't base your weight loss on others. My surgeon assured me that within the 2 year mark, I would be at the same weightloss as a bypass patient. Feeling good about that helped my decision as well. If you are diabetic the bypass may be the way to go because it puts diabetes in remission. I was not diabetic so that helped my decision also. I hope this helps you. But you will make the right decision. Happy New Year!
  6. Great article....such a shame that some of the states that need it most (like Texas) are excluded. I am hopeful however because it IS getting better. Literally thanks to not being held hostage over preexisting conditions, my husband and I are able to get real insurance for the first time in 12 years because my gastric bypass made me a leper in the eyes of the insurance company. (we are self employed) Because I could get a well woman's exam they found something that would have killed me if left unchecked. I was also able to get a colonoscopy which was about ten years overdue especially since my mom lost her life to colon cancer. I think we are getting closer and like Susan said....contacting your representative really does help in most states. I'm a glass half full girl and I'm grateful for the progress made so far and looking forward to making more. Thanks Alex for a very informative article. I so hope that one day in the near future they will finally acknowledge food addiction so that thousands can possibly get the help they need.

    Bypass vs sleeve

While you do lose faster with bypass because of the malabsorption, the amount of weight that you lose in the long run is going to be about the same with both surgeries. Both surgeries have their own set of possible complications, as with any surgery, so it is ultimately up to you which you feel more comfortable having. I personally don't like the idea of re-routing my insides and the malabsorption, which is why I am choosing the sleeve. I have 150 to lose as well. There are a lot of threads on here that weigh the pros and cons of each surgery . Good luck
  9. @Brians147 Wow, you look TERRIFIC! And very, very happy. Congratulations on your success! I'm so glad that your tumor was benign! I'm planning to have the Mini Gastric Bypass as well. It is wonderful to hear from someone who's had the procedure. Did your surgeon say why he opted to do the MGB over an RNY gastric bypass? I'm always curious to hear what made someone select the MGB since it isn't as widely known.

    Waiting For Lap Band Surgery

Gastric bypass is the #1 choice for resolution of diabetes. Many patients have normal glucose levels within days of gastric bypass. Other types of bariatric surgery, like the band, can also improve diabetes, but that usually is the result of the weight loss, not the surgery itself. I have no idea if the bypass can reverse or stop the calcification in your pancreas - you need to talk to your doctor about that. One other thing (for now) to keep in mind is that with the band, weight loss may not start until months after surgery, when you've gotten enough fill in your band to help it do its job of reducing hunger and creating early and prolonged satiety. For that reason, if I were in your position, I would strongly consider a different surgical procedure. I loved my band, and it did wonders for my diabetes in the long run, but the benefit only persisted as long as I made good food choices and exercised. I can't help you with your support group questions because I'm not even sure where Brownsville and McAllen are. Are they in Texas? There are 2 ways you could research support groups in your area. One is to go to the Texas forum here on LBT and post a question about it there. The other is to call the hospital nearest to you and ask if they have or know of any WLS support groups in your area.

    "She's blushing!"

OK... Dr sent me a new vid to watch talking about open bypass and he has a hiatal hernia, 2 incisional, and 1 umbilical hernia plus a mesh to remove... he had said possibly laprascopic but I think he's decided on open lol... still have 2 more weeks before I find out... Hope Your Day is Great, *Amber* The Starving Mom starvingmom.wordpress.com “I'm not telling you it's going to be easy - I'm telling you it's going to be worth it.” - Art Williams ekkk I would hate the idea of open.....but I'm sure he has a reason for it needing to be done that way. good luck to you.
  12. I too am sort of new. I joined about the time I had a lap band. Did well for a time then began having troubles finding the "Sweet spot". Then breast cancer and had my band deflated for fear of vomiting. I have been pretty discouraged and talked with my PCP who felt I had done as well as I can expect with the band. I have lost and gained the same 20 pounds now for months. We discussed the bypass and I am waiting to see if I will be accepted into the program. I am looking to give and get support and learning tip from those who have gone before me.

    SIPS Surgery

I had never heard of this but if it is the same as DS surgery it’s been around a while and seems to be a good surgery. It’s a little more drastic than the bypass or sleeve but it is said to produce more weight loss. If your doctor thinks it’s warranted I would consider it. The main thing I have heard that is really different is that you may need to take some extra vitamins post surgery. We all have to take them in the beginning and most people have to take some for life but DS usually have to take a few more. As long as you are someone who will comply with taking vitamins probably 3 or 4 times a day for life it should be an option. I would check out Hop Scotch’s suggestion though and see what others who have had the surgery have to offer.

    Resurrecting my band?

good luck!! I thought you and the band were done so this is nice to find out you still might be able to lose without having to get a revision.

    Resurrecting my band?

Since signing on for BP, I've occasionally mentioned in various places having strayed and wanting to get serious again. Finally, Step #1 for the second time.. Band surgery was October, 2009. My highest weight was 311. From about three weeks before surgery until mid-February, 2011, I lost 115 pounds. At 197, my goal of 145-150 was in sight. "Something," an event with emotional fallout, happened and that February, I stopped losing and soon began to gain. I went as high as 268 and mostly have hovered at 265-270. Twice in between I buckled down, lost about 25, only to regain them. All along I've wanted to get back to business. Just in the last couple of weeks, the feeling really set in. I made appointments for esophagram and to see the NP yesterday, ending a two year absence. Sure that I had great dilation (the band had been loosened twice before for that reason) and that the band was out of position, it was a thrill to find that I was wrong on both counts. I'd prepared myself to discuss revising to sleeve, but decided to give the band another shot. The NP agreed that it's worthwhile. The band had been rearing its head for several months, giving signals that I'd eaten enough. Other band signals and sensations that I vaguely recalled from the past were absent, so I had an adjustment, adding .5 cc for now, and already feel hints of the old effects. My next appointment is in August. We'll see what comes next at that time. How nice it will be if the band becomes a good partner again, "nice" being one hell of an understatement.

    Nashville,Tn Sleevers

NOTFAT: I live in Hermitage, so I am just a few exits down from you. I have to attend the support group in February and March to meet my insurance requirements. I knew VSG patients meet with the bypass patients, but I was hoping there would be more VSG attendees. Keep me informed on your surgery! I am very excited for you. SETTEBE: Oh, I'm sure we will pick your brain clean. Especially since we have the same practice doing our surgery. What about nausea? Did they do a good job keeping it at bay? That's my concern even more than the pain. I HATE throwing up. BTW, my husband and I lived in Carrollton, TX (outside of Dallas) for about 9 months back in 1985, before he got transferred back to Nashville. I liked it out there. Lisa

    U.S. kids having obesity surgery

Thanks for sharing!! I am just glad that kids have options now. I would have LOVED to have gotten my band when I was younger and obese and have my weight problem nipped in the butt early on. I think the lap band for severly obese kids is wonderful--not the bypass however. Too dangerous for children IMO. ~Liz~ 03/10/06241/156/160 5'8''
  18. It would be interesting to see what your surgeon recommends. I say this because I know some surgeons will recommend bypsss or won't do the sleeve because of GERD. However, my surgeon doesn't think you shouldn't do a sleeve on someone just because they have GERD. Those were the words I wanted to hear since I didn't want bypass. Boy do I regret it now 😧
  19. So, had a physical therapy preop eval today with goals set. Next week is a mandatory surgeon informational group meeting, followed by a nutrition 101 class, and an individial nutrition appointment. At this time, I still dont know which surgery to choose. I hope to have my questions answered at the surgeon group meeting. I feel like the PT tried to talk me into bypass vs sleeve. When I had a medical eval a few weeks ago with a nurse practitioner, I feel like she was pushing me towards bypass vs sleeve as well. I guess they see the outcomes more than I do. What do you guys think?

    down to the end

Are you getting the sleeve, bypass or a revision or would you like to talk about anything else? I'm understanding, my friend is getting a revision on the 24th and we've been focusing on other topics for now. These group can be the support you need...
  21. My thoughts exactly. I'd rather not go under the knife again which is why I'm 99% sure I'm going to pursue bypass.
  22. Hey fellow bypassers. My name is Bridgette, and I have been on an emotional journey which started a year ago. I weigh right now at 325. Which is five pounds heavier than I did on the surgery date from which I figured was from gas So my surgeon couldnt do it, too much fat in my abdominal cavity, closed me up and left. my mom wants to sue for reasons that we are broke, we told him if he didnt think he could or wouldnt then dont and he did. We did a bunch of test, including ultrasounds Any who getting off track, you can find more about that in theforum titled aborted. Any who, I met with a Dr. Nowzaradan, and he gave me a week to loose 5-20 pounds.... does this mean he is gonna take a chance on me?
  23. Hello All, I am super excited and nervous at the same time.. I was just approved for revision surgery for March 31.. I just wanted to know what are so of the recommended essentials to pack for my 2 night stay other than the obvious.. Thank you in advance!!
  24. Hello, My name is Meltini and I am going to be having surgery on 05/07/07. I am nevous:eek: , but this site and all you nice people out there, have been helpful to calm my fears.:nervous I have found so many caring and compassionate people on this site that are willing to offer their experience, thoughts and advice. Like some of the other posts, I am nevous about having something put inside me and staying there. I do feel lucky that I have a good doctor that is an abdominal/thorasic surgeon and specializes in LAP Band and Gastric Bypass. All the medical facilities are relatively close and I have support groups to choose from. I have seen a lot of people on here that do not have that luxury and have to go as far away as Mexico to get the surgery that they need and want. I feel blessed. I need this surgery. I have battling with weight all my life. Up down, up down... You know how it goes. I think it is a combination of genetics, eating and exercise habits(or lack there of), and environmental factors. We cannot control ALL of them to our liking. I do beleive that this LAP band will be a TOOL to assist me in learning new habits, making me aware of how I eat,(ie: too fast, too much, don't chew enough) and assisting me on my way to a healthier me- and hopefully someday a family!:clap2: So if anyone has any success stories to share with me about their LAP Band story, please fell free to email me or post a response. GENUINE thanks to all who have posted or will post. This site is an awesome support resource.
  25. Has anyone else needed physical therapy after gastric bypass surgery to regain their strength. My mom had surgery 1 weeks ago. She went into the surgery with existing back problems and the pain Meds masked the back pain. Now that it’s worn off her back is starting to hurt. She says her legs are weak and she’s unable to put pressure on her legs and can only walk short distances. She mainly lays in the bed because it helps her back and stomach not to hurt. I Don’t know if the weakness is due to effects of surgery or her back problems. She needs to be able to walk to help her heal and get rid of gas and prevent blood clots. Think it would be a good idea to have PT come in the house to help her regain her strength? Thanks
