    May 23 Is My Day!

Congrats on being so close! As someone who is revising from the band to the sleeve, I think you are making the right decision. I am sure there are people who experience success with the lapband, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
  2. I got my lapband in 2006 and loved it.I lost over 100 lbs and felf great. However it needed to be removed due to slippage. Medical necessity, not by choice. It was removed last November 2014. I got two Doctors opinions, both prefer to do the two surgerys seperately to give everything enought time to heal. I am now fighting with insurance company. My wonderful Doctor did have a peer to peer with my insurance company to explain why he felt I needed the revision to the sleeve. I have written 2 appeal letters and have been denied 3 time. It is now in the hands of a third party. I was wondering if there are others out there with similar storys. I am going to have the surgery regardless even if I have to self pay, which would wipe out all my savings. Keeping my fingers crossed.
  3. I am a 38 year old married man with 3 children. I weigh 275 pounds and have a BMI of 40. I am a football coach and have decided to do something about my weight. I saw a doctor for about a year supplementing thyroid, and testosterone and it did not help. I graduated high school and went into the military weighing 145 pounds and have been skinny until about age 23. I have went through all the tests (psych, upper gi, 6month nutrition, sleep study) The main reason I want to lose weight is to feel better and sleep better, and live longer for my kids (7,9, and 18 years old). I have had 5 knee surgeries from age 18-36 and need some weight off my knees. I have been discovered to have sleep apnea (makes sense why I was tired all the time). Monday ends my 6 month nutrition required by my insurance and we will actually set a surgery date. I am using Dr. Sonny Cavazos in San Antonio, Texas Please help me with these questions Thanks, JT 1. I want to keep this fairly private what do I tell my coworkers? 2. Anyone know anything about my doctor. 3. What percentage of people banded have to have some sort of revision?

I live in the bay and have Kaiser for insurance. I had mine at the South San Fran Kaiser and they are great. I've been seeing them since 2009 for band adjustments and then they did my sleeve revision in June this year.

    Disappearing Posts?

Nope. There was one tonight too and a newbie named Cindy asked me about them and I was telling her that they provide aftercare. How if u have any sleeve-related issues or revisions and come back they'll fix it and gave their Facebook page link.

    I'm Done

I have had my band since 2009 and started having a lot of complications with it in 2012 so I am having the revision to Sleeve on 11/27/13. I have heard a lot of people say they had to have a hernia repair what is the causes of getting a hernia with the band? For the last month I have had swollen, pinching, stabbing, and pulling feeling around my port area when I move or bend a curtain way. Is this something I should be concerned about?

    I Was Too Afraid...

I had the sleeve in 2012. I was perfect sleeve candidate. I did not have GERD and no comorbities. I got pregnant post sleeve and I regained all my weight back. I have developed GERD and my sleeve is twisted. I also developed a hiatal hernia which I do not attribute to my sleeve. I am having revision surgery to RNY in October 3 years almost to the date of my sleeve surgery. Should have, would have, could have RNY to begin with. I never wanted to have a 2nd surgery. I do believe drs often times do not like performing sleeve on those with bad GERD to begin with. There are many successful sleevers and lapband to sleevers. Good luck in your decision.

  9. I can give you a referral. Dr. Ramos Kelly in Tijuana did mine (revision from lapband to VSG) and my niece's vsg and was great, the whole experience was great. They treat you wonderful and you can talk directly to the doctor if you want, that isn't a big deal at all. I did a lot of research before going down there and there were about 3 I had decided on and narrowed it down to him. I have heard about many good ones in Mexico. After doing research get on all the forums you want and search out that doctor's name and communicate with people who have actually had it done by the doctor you are considering...that is the best referral system, a testimony! There might be people not satisfied with him, I don't know. Everyone has there on priorities and needs look into who fits their wants and needs. I appreciated all the names and numbers I could get when I was doing research. Try and book directly through the doctor not an agency if possible. Here is their email for information: wls-clinic@hotmail.com or website http://www.ramoskellymd.com/ the coordinator there is name Omar and he is exceptionally nice and helpful. I am not saying just go to him but I'm just giving you a start on your research. everyone needs to pick their own doctor of course. Here is my video of our time there. Good luck with your research and decision. feel free to ask me any questions.
  10. I just wanted to look and feel pretty. My health was so declining that I needed to have WLS as revision to the gastric bypass I had 10 yrs ago. Preop was not a bad plan for me--I now am challenged by eating the solid foods. I am glad you are getting sleeved soon and wish you well. Ronda
  11. I had a revision on September 10th with no complications at all. Any surgery has risks attached to it. Maybe review with him what he is afraid of, what complications maybe he is just a fraid to lose you. It has been the best decision I could have made and have no regrets. Good Luck.
  12. Have you considered getting the gastric sleeve? Especially since you are self pay. Don't forget that with the band, you will have to pay for fills until you get to your "sweet" spot. You will also need to have follow up EGDs yearly to check for erosions, etc. Lastly, contrary to what some say, the band isn't always "reversable". I spent nearly $40,000.00 after I had the band dealing with the problems that the band caused (this is not including the original surgery which my insurance paid for). I am not trying to scare you but just think about it. The sleeve is the same thing as a partial gastrectomy, which they have been doing for years for other issues such as cancer, severe ulcers, etc. It is considered "experimental" for weight loss because of the "newness" of doing it for weight loss. Kind of like when they use a medication for one thing and then a few years later find out that it helps other diseases than just those that it was approved for. There are many people who I know that have had "partial gastrectomies" for years. The only problem they have is that they are "skinny". Once you get the sleeve, you are done. No going back and paying for "fills". No having multiple surgeries to correct adhesions and other issues caused by the band. No paying for yearly EGDs. No worrying about finding another surgeon to take care of you and do the fills if you move away or your surgeon decides to "retire" or close his practice. I could go on and on but I won't. As I said, I'm not trying to scare you or piss on your parade so to speak. Just giving you something to think about. This is especially true since you are self pay. Just trying to let you know that there is a cheaper, safer way to achieve weight loss through surgery. Just go to verticlesleevetalk.com and obesityhelp.com to the revision sections/complications section and read, read, read, read before you have your surgery.

    Had my band removed...now what?

Do you have any chance of having a revision to a different surgery? I think the feeling of "I couldn't have this before but now I can" can cause really big problems, because your current situation likely isn't going to change soon
  14. All I can add to what the others have said is that about half the people I met and still meet in the bariatric center are either having the band removed or revised to sleeve. I am almost 4 weeks post-op with no problems and no regrets, and no, my gall bladder was not removed.
  15. I'm new here. I had lapband 4-19-2011 & had a lot of complications had it removed 6-3-2014. I am set to have revision surgery to sleeve 10-7-2015. I'm 5ft my starting weight was 199 I got down to 126lbs had band removed & now I am currently at 188lbs & back on blood pressure meds & cholesterol meds & I have fatty liver. I'm back to no energy & everything hurts, knees & back. I am scared about the sleeve because I'm afraid if I start losing too much weight I won't be able to control is. I only have 60lbs to lose. I was wondering if anyone had that problem, losing too much weight?? I hope I don't sound ridiculous ???? I just don't won't to look sick. I feel terrible & I want the weight off of me. My surgeon assured me I wouldn't be losing 100lbs, that the sleeve would just be taking the place of the lapband. We are paying cash & im also praying I have no complications, the last thing I won't is to be a burden to my family. My surgeon is Dr. Jason Balette in the woodlands, tx. He did tell me he would look around inside of me & if things don't look healthy he will not proceed with surgery because when he took my band out he told my family I was a mess inside, the worst he'd ever seen. He did not do my band a doctor by the name of dr. Richard Wilkenfeld did my lapband, & punctured my colon, had 4 days in the hospital & then 4 weeks later repeated lapband surgery (way too soon). Dr Richard Wilkenfeld was practicing around the Conroe, Tx & Houston area, he's no longer in practice because of law suites. So for such a long post again I'm new ????. I am scared????

    thanks to all of you

I have watched this site for several months now and it has been so so helpful. I had my band to sleeve revision ( after a slip, and then non-functioning port). Had another hernia that they had to repair as well. Today it has been a week and I am down 11 pounds and feel great although I have over done a bit. You all have been very helpful even to those of us who kinda stay in the shadows most of the time-- Thanks!

    Band-to-Sleeve...my story..

Welcome, and thank you so much for sharing your story with us. I was a band to sleeve revision as well, and have no regrets about switching. The sleeve is easy and almost effortless compared to the band. I am confident you will love it and life so much more now.

I had no complications with my band surgery (Rumbaut in Monterrey, Mexico...Hospital San Jose), and no complications with my DS surgery (Keshishian in Delano, CA...Delano Regional Medical Center), and no complications with my breast reduction surgery/abdominoplasty revision (Andrew Cohen, Beverly Hills, CA...St. John's Hospital)...but with my original abdominoplasty (at a VA hospital), I ended up with a resistant infection, was readmitted and had to spend an extra week or so inpatient getting IV Zosyn q6h. See how we treat our veterans? The supervising physician said that the complication rate for abdominoplasties on an MO population--I was MO at the time--was 100%. After the surgery. I mean he SAID it after, not before, the surgery. HTH
  19. Hi all its normal to be nervous, I'm a band to sleeve revision patient due to the band failing. I was revised 12 months ago and i have not ever regretted that i made this decision. It has been the best decision i have made for my health and wellbeing. I have lost 154lbs in 12 months.. Yes you read that right ???? and I'm still losing. I had a few challenges in the first 6 months, i could not eat meat or dairy and i developed GERD. At the 7 month point i was able to meat and dairy and now i can safely say that at 12 months my GERD is all but gone ( once in a very odd blue moon do i have to take meds for it). I have lymphoedema on both lower limbs and that is almost gone. Life is good!! I wish you all the very best in your weight loss journeys xox.
  20. Sleeve was the right decision for me, I'm sure it will be for you, too. If you have any doubt vs the band, go over to the band to sleeve revision forumm here and read all the band nightmares.

    Sucralose?

Hi all - I was revised from a band to VSG Monday 12/18. I came home from the hospital Wednesday night - things are going ok, but I've been sticking mostly to more clear liquid type stuff. I thought I was doing myself a favor by drinking the Isopure Zero Carb pre-made drinks, which give me 40 grams of protein each. I've had four of them since Wednesday. Unfortunately, I've spent an inordinate amount of time in the bathroom, with some fairly explosive issues. Also, have had some pretty bad lower right side abdominal cramping/gas/pressure. Anyone else have problems with sucralose?
  22. Hi everyone! Question for you. Let me preface this by saying I have contacted my dr. office and will follow up accordingly. I'm 1 month post op from band to GP revision. Two mornings ago I stretched in a weird way, and felt a popping or tearing under my left ribcage. It hurt and it's still sore. I called my doctors office in a panic and she said "how do you feel"? Hahaa! I actually feel fine. No fever or nausea. I'm eating just fine, still getting in my fluids in but it's just sore like I've been working out. She said it was probably scar tissue but watch for hemorrhaging in my bm's. (Yah that will be in 3 days! Sorry.. Lol) Just wondering if anyone has had something similar. Thanks!
  23. I was 56 when I had a revision from the lapband to the sleeve last Dec. I wish that I could have done this years ago and enjoyed more of my life. It is like getting a second chance to do all of the things that I was never able or felt like I could do. I say go for it and enjoy your life and your children. I had my surgery in Tijuana with Dr F Garcia as my insurance would not cover the surgery here in the US and it would have cost me over $40,000. I paid for the surgery myself and the band to sleeve was $6,000. If you are just having the sleeve there is would be more around $5,000. Check with your insurance and see if they pay and what the requirements are to qualify.

    Slip!!

I have read that a slight slip may repair its self with a start over diet following one like after surgery. Going through the stages. I would try it if dr advises it's easier than a revision.
