Coffee confusion...need some more experienced advice
Ballermom replied to Tamosy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ballermom in the house. I need a serious 13 steps program for coffee lol I'm a Coffeeholic too. Especially since getting my expresso machine. I mean. Lol. I also work off shift too. Every Surgeon is different. My program didn't have much of a delay for coffee. I couldn't tolerate it early on. Now Im am slowing down a little because, coffee can take the place of needed protein drinks an is a diuretic/ can add to dehydration. But I love it. For now -

The bright side of being in quarantine after WLS

1. The longer I go without seeing people, the greater my opportunity to surprise them with my new skinny self! 2. It doesn't matter that my bras don't fit, b/c I don't have to wear one! 3. By wearing jammies every day, I have no idea what size clothing I wear, so it will be a fun surprise when I finally decide to get dressed again! 4. Working from home, I don't have to worry about temptations from coworkers bringing in donuts, cookies, etc. 5. Also no restaurant temptations, since I eat every meal at home. 6. I can use all the $$ I'm saving on not getting hair and nails done to get extra glamorous when I break out of here someday. 7. Amazon delivers my favorite protein shakes. 8. I have plenty of time to try various free workout videos on YouTube. 9. Plenty of time for weighing experiments, before shower/after shower, before pee/after pee; the possibilities are endless. 10. I can drink as much water as I want, b/c I can pee every 10 minutes if I have to (which is also fun for #9). -

I'm sorry. I am pre-surgery so not much help probably. Have you tried adding unflavored protein powder to soup or even flavored water like Crystal Light? Are you able to get in enough water?? -
Is this all normal? Post VSG
hpvsg replied to hpvsg's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
About the drinking and protein shake, yep! I was instructed to wait. The bariatric coordinator actually gave me a schedule of when I should "eat" my shake, then the 30 minute wait period, then when I can drink again. And how much I should drink. She was so strict about sticking to the schedule and it does make sense. Example; 8-8:30 am; Drink 3 ounces of protein shake 8:30-9 am; NOTHING by mouth 9-12; drink 20 ounces of water. Then it continues like that until 9pm. I think starting now just helps prepare for when you can have solid food. -

How much can you eat at a single meal post-VSG at 1 year + out? 1 cup? 1.5 cups? I know there are slider foods which one can consume more of, and lean Protein which one can eat less of. I'm just a newly sleeved person trying to better understand where I'll be in a year. Very much appreciate any example you can give of what you eat that are known (e.g., mc donald's happy meal, single bean burrito from taco bell). Know those examples aren;t the healthiest, but you get the point

Protein drinks ... how long do you have to use them
Cupcake replied to swtpea637's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have been drinking Protein drinks for a year now I started drinking the pre-opt while going though my 6 month pre opt supervised weight lost prior to my surgery , I drink a Protein Drink everyday now and probably will be drinking one for the rest of my life. This gives me 30 grams of protein a day which is a big boost toward my goal. I would buy to many pre-opt because your taste buds will changed, I too bought the unjury as well as unjury chicken noodle Soup and i cant drink it now unless I force myself. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress. -
Protein drinks ... how long do you have to use them

My program NUT said daily protein shakes until I reach goal weight. I have an assortment of flavors and extracts to provide variety. I anticipate daily shakes for the next 2 years. I expect to get tired of them from time to time, but this is my new reality. I'm committed, so daily shakes it is. -

Protein drinks ... how long do you have to use them
Sunnyskies2283 replied to swtpea637's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
We were told my the NUT to try to start getting all protein from food. I'm 8 weeks out. She said to view protein supplements as like an inhaler when you're desperate to get protein in for that day. She stressed that food has nutrients that you simply don't get from the supplements. That's her view but as you can tell it appears to be different from what other posters have been told. -
Post-opt symptoms-fever/hot flashes
Hopefull17 replied to Hopefull17's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Going to Dr. in the morning...food has been the same for the last 13 days...clear liquids, protein shakes...no new meds, except paid meds which he has not reacted to in the past...I don't believe any new meds were introduced during/after surgery when his band was removed 3 few months ago...i suppose I just was wondering if this is common, but just not "highlighted" when this drastic surgery is touted as a great procedure to have done... -

I used to travel for work a lot B4 sleeve and it was tough, I’m not sure I could do it now, so congratulations on trying to find a workable option. I have some ideas, that might be possible. When you travel is it often to the same places, and do you frequent the same restaurants? If so, you could have a chat with the restaurant and see what options may be available. They may be able to offer you smaller portions, and by being a regular you won’t need to constantly explain at time of ordering. A reminder at booking may be enough. Is it a requirement to wine/dine client? Is it possible to change up the location or activities? The home cooking can be a challenge, and again I have no idea of your arrangements so feel free to ignore. You could check to see if there is a shelter or a Ronald McDonald type of housing in your area. You could cook up your favourite dishes, take a serve or 2 for yourself and drop the rest off. This way families staying in short term/supportive housing benefit from a home cooked meal and the food isn’t wasted. Best of luck and let me know how you go.

Thanks for empathizing everyone, and for the advice. Funny @Creekimp13, I was thinking today that I wish my dog were still alive, she'd be loving all the proteins she'd be getting, and I wouldn't feel near as guilty! @Orchids&Dragons I totally love buffets. I feel like people pay far less attention to what's on your plate, and I create very little waste. And I wish I wasn't single right now. Then I'd be able to cook and send almost all the leftovers home with him! As for the work travel thing, it's complicated. When I'm eating alone I customize the crap out of my meals. But when I'm dining with others I do so only minimally. First I don't want to attract any more attention than necessary to my eating habits. It's also not viewed favorably at all with in my company to be "picky and demanding". I have a peer who customizes everything, but not due to any dietary issues, just because he is a self absorbed PIA. He is definitely looked down up by our management, and it is viewed as unprofessional. Being able to be flexible and go with the flow is highly valued where I work. @Pearldrop I unfortunately don't go any single place more frequently than quarterly. Even in the same city I don't have a lot of frequent repeats, unless it's the hotel restaurant, lol. I think the hotel chain I stay at sent me a summary last year saying I stayed in 54 different cities. Since I am traveling to my customers or collegues area, it is customary for them to pick the restaurant. Wine and dining is a requirement, I'm afraid. But it is not only customers, but colleagues as well. Going to a nice dinner with drinks flowing is a way to relax and break down barriers, and form relationships with people you deal with frequently but see infrequently. My company is very frugal in a lot of ways, but I have no T&E budget, and have never been questioned on a dining expense, so that's how important it is to our corporate culture. (Also part of why I needed WLS!) I'll definitely have to look into the shelter or Ronald McDonald House idea. I like it a lot, it's killing two birds with one stone. I've just never heard of any place being willing to take home cooked food. I think in the US we might be too afraid of liability for a charity to accept such a thing. I'll look into it though!

POST OP (6 + months) Questions

I'm pretty sure not being able to eat or drink anything is not in my head. I'm not wanting to eat a slice of pizza or eat poorly, I was simply asking if I'll ever be able to eat anything again. I'm living off ice & a few bites of broth here & there. 15 days out & I should be able to handle soup or puréed food by now, anything is better than nothing. Starving my body was not what I had planned on. I would like to get in the recommended amount of protein & fluids the proper way, not just through ice chips. I do not appriciate being told its all in my head! -
How much Protein and water does everyone drink daily?
bbbanded replied to g_o40's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not nearly as much as I should. Old habits die very hard I guess. While my eating has gone from 100% before the band to maybe 30% that liquid and Protein intake I should be working on is minimal. I could tell you how much I should have though, if that counts for anything. -

I have been banded since 8/15/13 and have lost 53 lbs. so far. But for the past 2 weeks, I haven't lost any weight at all. I am having a hard time getting in allot of protein and not as many ounces of water as I should. Any suggestions how to increase both??? What does everyone else do? How many ounces of water and grams of protein does your DR/NUT recommended daily? -
Unexpectedly needing to care for yourself after surgery?
Russ D replied to ChellNC's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I live alone. I had family stay with me for two days after surgery, after that I was on my own. If I've needed to move something heavy I would ask someone to stop by and help ("Hey, thanks for the help, I can offer you this really wretched-tasting protein shake! :3 "). Other than that it was all me. -
I was starting to get worried that my stomach was too big, or that I'd never even HAD the surgery! (I know, super silly thoughts.) I've been able to get down liquids and soft cheeses and even little rice crackers, no prob! Yesterday I had a single serving microwaveable bowl of mac and cheese, and even a tiny piece of chicken (all well-chewed, of course, and I stayed within my calories and hit my protein). No problems at all. BUT! I just made myself a cup of turkey chili, and I couldn't even get through a third of it. It's weirdly comforting to feel that full. ????
