10 days post op
katanabutterfly replied to Murphy143's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 11 days out and I tried some cottage cheese today and it went down great. My tomato soup and Greek yogurt have been getting me through, but I too cannot wait to start eating "real food". I need to get back on my shakes, but drinking them now makes me wanna hurl. They are too sweet to me. I want to pick up some Premier Protein shakes and try those, as I have no urge to make my own from this giant jug of powder I bought pre-op. I cannot wait for pursed! ~*~Heather~*~ -
Last night I was on a support group meeting (I'm pre-op) and they were talking about "banana protein pancakes". 1 banana, 1 egg, 1 scoop of protein powder mashed in a bowl then cooked like a pancake (apparently it also works in a waffle maker, but I don't have one). It makes two pancakes, they said. I'd never made pancakes before (yeah, I am normally a pretty good cook, but I'm not a breakfast person). I tried it this morning and it was pretty good, except that I cooked it at too high a temperature and the outside got a little too brown. I would recommend cooking on medium. I just made one big pancake because my pan is too small to separate it into two different pancakes. I didn't have an egg so I used 1/4 cup egg whites. I usually would eat pancakes with maple syrup, but that defeats the "low carb" so I used a little light cool whip. I know one woman in the support group used butter; I might try that if I make them again. I tend to make normal meals but don't make the "carb" portion. So, like I'll just have piece of broiled salmon with green beans. Or I'll eat a can of tuna fish with Suzie's Rice Squares instead of bread/crackers and a side of a red bell pepper. Or if I want lasagna, I'll replace the noodles with mostly eggplant that I roast in strips first. Chili is another good one. Top it with greek yogurt instead of sour cream (I can't tell the difference!) and some cheese. I have eaten cheeseburgers/turkey burgers without the bun. I don't like the feeling of eating them in lettuce so I just eat them with a knife and fork. I like the low carb tortilla wraps by Fiber One and Mission and I'll put deli meat and cheese in them and toast them in a pan with non stick spray for a sort of "melt" or "faux quesedilla".

My name is Heather and I was a fast food junky, lol. Right after banding I had a rough time with this during the post op phase. I did not eat fast food, but I craved it so much that it was almost painful for me to drive past and Arby's, Wendy's, Taco Bell, McD's, etc. Part of my problem with overeating was impulse control - you could immediately get whatever you wanted from a fast food joint. After a few months I stopped having cravings. I knew that almost everything I could buy would make me sick, so I didn't even want to bother with it. Now I have something from a fast food place maybe one every week or two and there are options. You can get a grilled chicken patty at McDonald's for $1.40 where I live. They just put it on a piece of lettuce in a side salad container. That is actually filling and is enough food. If I am extra hungry I might get two, but I could never finish two. Fruit & Yogurt parfaits are also not too shabby. Grilled chicken sandwiches are great anywhere but it is hard to get them without bread sometimes. I just toss the bread. A personal favoite is the spicy chicken fillet from Wendy's but it is big and I can't finish it. It is breaded - but I think I have only had it 2-3 times since banding. Their chili is also decent with some hot sauce and not too many calories either. Taco Bell is great with the zesty chicken bowl or refried Beans. These can be ok options for a bandster. I can never finish a bowl, but a side of beans is just the right size. A crunchy taco supreme works as well in that the crunchy tortilla doesn't get stuck, the sour cream makes it go down well and there are really not many calories there. I don't eat burgers or fries anymore. They just don't satisfy me and I can definitely pb on fries. Burgers are just too greasy (never bothered me before but with the modified diet I can't believe I used to like them).

Date...help With Dinner Decision??
legnarevocrednu replied to Papillon Princess's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
If you want foods that will keep you full longer, then pasta and bread are the WRONG foods to eat. Carbs don't keep you full. I would definitely avoid them. Eat more chicken, yogurt, eggs etc (protein). Those foods keep you full for longer periods of time. -
Medications: to crush or not to crush??
SarahRN482 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For many years I've been on medications for high BP, allergies, GERD, and high cholesterol. I'm hopeful that eventually I won't need to be on a lot of these medications, but for now, I'm still on them. The issue I'm having is that they are AWFUL to crush. Holy cow, the taste is just totally TERRIBLE, it literally makes me shiver anytime I crush them and take them, even in applesauce. My question for ya'll is this: Can I take my pills whole, or do I need to continue to crush them? And if I need to keep crushing them, what should I mix them in to cover up the taste even more? Maybe yogurt?? -
Will I Ever Enjoy Food Again?
Tiffykins replied to optasia's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can honestly tell you that I love food 100% just the same as I did pre-op. It took me months to get here, and I really didn't start liking food again I was at goal, and was able to really add in more food into my daily intake that consisted of more than just meat, cheese, eggs, and greek yogurt. Also, get creative. There are fabulous recipes out there that really made eating easier, and more pleasant. You'll be able to enjoy food again. I eat a huge variety of foods, and do not keep anything off my menu just because I had VSG. I had sushi(3 slices of shrimp tempura roll), and some pepper steak with fried rice this afternoon for lunch, for dinner I had 1/2 sonic corny dog, 3 chili/cheese tater tots, and 2 cheddar poppers. Okay, so it took me about an hour to eat dinner tonight because the corndog was filling, BUT it was a mad pregnancy craving, and it's what I wanted. Seriously, you will enjoy food again, but it will take some time, and some creativity on your part. -
wow I can't believe you are home 3 hours post op!! amazing! I couldn't even walk or sit up 3 hours post op. I was in the hospital for 2 nights. For the first 2 days I was on clear fluids, and then liquids - Protein drinks, strained Soup, yogurt, popsicles, Jello, cream of wheat....I was on liquids for 2 weeks post op. Just work on getting as much Water & protein as you can the first little while.

Hi. I just had the surgery Tues 12/13, came home Thurs. My doc told me no pills- I am on liquid multivitamin (after the surgery- about 1 1/2 wks before surgery Dr told me to stop multivitamin), Prevacid two a day (either crushed or he told me to break the capsule and sprinkle it in yogurt), and gas-x strips, as needed, and chewable calcium. I am on a liquid diet, at least 48 oz of liquid and he said try to shoot for at least 65 g protein. I use the lean protein shakes from GNC which have 25 g protein with vitamins.(Love the vanilla, hated the strawberry and chocolate). Good luck!

Oh "Angela" - thank you for the laugh! I am so sorry to hear about your hospital experience, but hopefully it will be smooth sailing from here onwards. My biggest issues have been: pain in left shoulder (no consensus on cause or cure it seems), constipation (took milk of mag today, I pray for relief!), and not killing my BF for eating pizza in front of me (to be fair, he's been really good and only broke down on my day 8). Although I get full much faster than I ever did before, I'm tired of being full on broth and yogurt drinks! Will shop this weekend to get more variety which hopefully will help. Love the idea of yahoo group and will join, thanks for setting it up WVGal!

By the way I forgot to report on myself. I have done extremely well. I have very little soreness now (day 5) . I haven't had any gas pains. I had the same experience that CMT had. I laughed when she said she "wasted" the yogurt. That's me. Always cleaned my plate, always "got my money's worth" at a buffet. "All you can eat" is not supposed to be a challange! I have not had any doubts that I have done the right thing. I am down 23 from my highest (265) I was 255 when I started my pre-op diet and today I am down 13 (242). My husband tells me "Thats 13 lbs you'll never have to lose again" In some of my pre-op posts I told of my fear that I would be the one person in this world that this would not work for. But now that it's done I am determined that I will make this work for me.

Wastefulness
Catracks replied to ChunkyAndFluffy75's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I save everything in little tupperwares. I am not able to throw good food away. I plan my menuus out so that meat cooked for dinner goes into lunch the next day. I don't cook something new until I've finished the leftovers. Cottage cheese and yogurt are easy. Just take 1/4 cup out. The chunky part of the Soup could be frozen and pureed or used when the time comes. I've got chicken breast and gravy, 4 types of pureed soup and crock pot beef stew frozen in mini tupperwares for use as needed. What I learned from Eggface is that leftovers can be revamped into something else for the next day. She does these little quiche things that use leftover meats and cheese. They can also be casseroled or used as toppings for pizza (crust is low carb wheat tortillas). The cool part of all this small portions is that I can afford beef fillet mignon, sashimi grade ahi and lobster for the amount I eat. YAY!!!! -
This really makes me sad that your doctor doesn't seem to want to help you. I was self pay and my doctor is so hard on me and "demands" me to abuse him for the first year. I have to see him every month regardless if I need a fill or just to talk to him..he wants to see me. You would think since he can't bill my insurance he wouldn't even want to see me. I guess the only thing I can suggest or tell you what I have done...I have currently 5.25 ccs in a 10cc band (I had a total of 4 fills but we had to unfill when I hit 6ccs..it was too tight). When I was first banded 11/23/9 I followed the "diet" to a tee for the first month..then I told my doctor that this is not a diet this is a lifestyle change. I eat normal foods (I make the same meal for my entire family for dinner). I just eat much smaller portions, I eat the protien first and then nibble on what ever else might be served. I never drink a 1/2 prior or after any meal. I am not a breakfast person so I normal do drink a shake for breakfast. My snacks include Chobani Greek yogurt or SF pudding. I have lost 75 lbs to date and going strong. I walk for my excerise. I love my band!! Stay positive. I truly hope this new doctor is more helpful to you! I wish you the best!!

Surgery Monday
Schmincke replied to Mommy2Three83's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My surgery is the day after yours. Good luck to us both! Here is what I am allowed the first week after surgery - but remember every surgery/surgeon may be different and require different things: Priority #1: 64+ ounces of Water a day. Priority #2: 60+ grams of Protein a day, using liquids like pre-made Protein shakes (>15gm protein, <5gm fat, <5gm sugar per serving). Main ingredient must be whey, soy, casein, milk, hemp, or albumin (egg) protein. Cheapest source is "Double Protein Milk" which is 1 cup low fat milk + ⅓ cup nonfat dry milk/powdered milk. Week 1: pureed liquid diet - high protein, sugar free, low fat. Sip on liquids, food should be the consistency of applesauce or even runnier. No fizzy drinks. For example:Protein:shakes or double-protein milk pureed fish, seafood, poultry, meat pureed eggs, egg substitute pureed cottage cheese, yogurt (no sugar), cocoa (sf) pureed beans/lentils, pureed/strained black bean Soup strained low fat cream soup Vegetables and fruits:No raw or uncooked vegetables or fruits Baby food "Stage 1" Pureed water-packed fruit or cooked vegetables V-8 or tomato juice as long as NO sugar (i.e. V-8 Splash may have sugar) fruit juice <½ cup per day StarchesCooked strained Cereal like baby food Mashed sweet or white potatoes - can add yogurt or milk to make them more mushy Soup mixed with Protein powder sugar-free popsicles Now please keep in mind that I have not had my surgery yet either! A lot of sleevers swear by the sugar free popsicles, and they count as Fluid by my doctor. And some people say water is hard to swallow unless you add Mia Drops. Good luck! -
Hey Guys! I have 1 and 1/2 days left! I must say the liquid diet thing (I'm winging it too... diet shakes, Jello, non-chunky Soup, yogurt etc) has helped with my confidience.... I've lost 6 pounds... and in a way it makes me feel that I won't die with out "real" food. I listened to my friend and decied to grab a bit of my favorite foods (ok A LOT) and "pig out" before surgery, since I will never be able to again. You know what guys, I felt AWFUL!!!! Not just emotionally, guilty that I cheated. But I was nauseous, my stomach felt unsettled and heavy. It was probably the best idea ever cause now I KNOW I can do this! I hope this help ya'll fighting that liquid diet! Ambo Hey how can I get those weight/bmi counter dower things on my posts?

Help, 7 weeks out need low carb meal ideas
Shan replied to Ibejjo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I eat lots of chicken...baked, chicken parmesan, chicken salad, chicken teriyaki, etc I also eat quite a bit of lean ground beef in the form of burgers with spinach, avocado, cheese, spinach and pickles (no bun), chili with lots of veg, meatloaf, taco salad with ground beef cooked with taco seasoning, lettuce, spinach, avocado, salsa and whatever lowfat dressing I want(no shell, just a bowl). I eat tuna at least twice a week with some lowfat miracle whip, and celery in it...sometimes with a few crackers, sometimes not. I eat eggs and egg whites in the form of omelets, scrambled, and hard boiled. I found a Protein supplement called nectar that I really like. I get the strawberry mousse flavor, and blend it up with Water, two frozen strawberries and a little stevia. Then I top it with sugar free whipped cream. Quite tasty. I eat a ton of cottage cheese with strawberries, blueberries and a bit of stevia. I also keep a variety of lowfat cheeses around to grab when I'm in a hurry. I eat Peanut Butter or almond butter as a treat. Sometimes if I'm dying for a goody, I put two dark chocolate chips in my tablespoon of peanut butter. Another time I was dying for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, but obviously bread and jelly aren't great options. I just took a tablespoon of Peanut Butter and threw in five or six blueberries. Got rid of the craving and it was a perfectly acceptable snack. I keep small packs of beef Jerky around for the times that I really have to run, but have forgotten to eat, which happens often since surgery. It does have a lot of sodium and nitrates so you have to be careful with that, but if you really need a high protein snack...it'll pack a punch at around 15 grams an ounce. Organic is also an option if you're worried about nitrates or hormones in your meat. I also eat a lot of greek yogurt. I used to eat the DELICIOUS fruited varieties, but they can have a lot of sugar. Now I eat the no fat, plain kind and add my own fruit and stevia. There really are a lot of options out there once you get the hang of it, but it is so hard in the beginning when your stomach is picky and nothing really tastes all that great. This blog has been mentioned on here a ton and for good reason...it is PACKED with great ideas. Just browse through and you'll find a ton of high protein recipes for everything from casseroles to Protein shakes, to protein ice cream. Great resource. http://theworldaccor...e.blogspot.com/ -
Hey guys! I just came up with an awesome post-op meal. I woke up this morning really wanting a smoothie but didn't have the ingredients. So I mixed a blueberry yogurt with a couple of strawberries and puree'd it into a sort of mush and it's very tasty and I think pretty filling. My doc says I can eat anything that can be sipped through a straw, so as long as it's blended thoroughly i think its A-OK

Since the subject is fills...anyone had trouble with cold stuff after a fill? Last night I had a little "golfball" feeling with a SF popsicle, and today with a fruit smoothie (made it myself, with a peach, yogurt, frozen banana, orange juice and 3 ice cubes). Maybe I'm drinking too fast...boy, what a difference in this fill!

Josh, for me the band reprogrammed my brain to look at large quantities of food as a source of pain and discomfort rather than pleasure. I enjoy the smell of food but can be satisfied with small portions because after that, the pain kicks in. I went out to dinner this evening to a rib place. First, I ordered just the appetizer basket instead of a full meal. It came with three ribs and fries. My husband ordered onion petals. I ate 3 or 4 onion petals, one fry, two small nibbles of bread and butter, and 1/2 of one rib. I knew if I ate more it would hurt and I would probably have to run to the bathroom and puke. After a few episodes of that, I have no desire to overeat. You just don't feel like stuffing your face when your stomach is approaching nausea. By the way, this isn't my normal diet. I usually eat oatmeal for Breakfast, Soup or yogurt for lunch, and something like a lean cuisine meal for dinner. I just want to stress that the usual opportunities for overeating, like eating out, are squelched by the band. You still have to make the right choices and eat healthy food on your own, without help from the band. In fact you have to be even more of a healthy eater than a nonbanded person, for the simple reason that you can't hope to get in the nutrients you need AND the junk food when you are banded. I can't snack very much either without getting uncomfortable and having to stop. It's more a matter of aversion therapy than feeling full and satisfied. On the other hand, the positive reinforcement you get from weighing yourself, looking in the mirror, and watching your clothes grow too large is a strong incentive to keep going, especially when you know the band will catch you if you fall too hard.

Why are my readings not coming down?!?!?!
chitowngirl replied to bascott73's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Do you track your food? Maybe the protein drinks you are drinking contain a lot of sugars, have you been eating something that contains high sugar? Yogurt can contain a lot of sugar if your not careful. Even though you are not eating a lot I would still really watch the sugar content. Hope you figure this out soon. -
1St Grocery Store Visit**post-Op
LosingItForMe2011 replied to flip-flop-gurl's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I used Hormel Turkey chili without Beans, greek yogurt (if you don't like the taste try the Yoplait 100 greek...I can't stomach the others myself), lowfat cottage cheese, Soups you can puree in a blender or with a hand blender, egg beaters, 2%, lowfat or fat free cheeses, poached eggs work, sugar free pudding with Protein powder mixed. Hope that helps somewhat. If I can think of more I'll post em -
I start purees on Monday, Aug 20th. I just bought Hormels turkey Chili with beans 97% fat free and it has 19 proteins 1 fat, 1 sugar and I also got the Chili with veggies 97% fat free and Chili without beans which is lower in protein. I was told to try it with a little of little cold greek yogurt for that sour cream effect and it will add more protein. Or even wit ricotta heated on top. The fat free refried beans is another protein dish that you can add greek yogurt or ricotta. I looked for canned fat free soups and could not find any without pasta or potato or barley.for my stage 4 puree. So my husband and I decided to buy kidney, lentel, black beans and black eye peas and we are going to make a bean soup with carrotts, cabbage with chicken thighs no skin because chicken breast would be too dry in a soup. I will use low sodium bouiline cubes (spelling?) and chicken broth in the box and of course many non salt seasonings. I will cook it and freeze it. I bought fish in lemon sause that can be microwave in 3 minutes and it very good, which I had on my prediet. Can anyone tell me on your stage 4 with puree, can you have snacks between the 3 meals and is your protein 2oz.
