Bipolar and gastric bypass
mcipanda replied to A-Rae's topic in GLP-1 & Other Weight Loss Medications (NEW!)
My mom has bipolar and had gastric bypass almost ten years ago. She has always done well, which is encouraging, but definitely chat to your doctor and surgeon. I’ll be getting a gastric sleeve next week and had a really long chat with my surgeon about Wellbutrin and Lexapro (I take both). The first thing he asked was weather or not I was on the Wellbutrin XR (extended release). I agree with another poster that extended release meds should be monitored differently, but only your doctor will truly know. Good luck to you! -
How did you do on your pre-op diet?
mcipanda replied to mcipanda's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Haha “hell week” is right. I’m not sure if a liquid diet would be better (as Elidh said, fewer choices = easier?) or the freedom to eat what you want as long as it fits specific macros. Heck, even macros gave me heck recently. My brain is bouncing back, but A couple days ago, I wouldn’t have remembered my middle name without a drivers license 😅😆 -
I’m on day 4 after surgery last Wednesday. Here are my thoughts based on what I just experienced. On day of surgery, when you wake up, don’t panic. This day and the next day before going home you will feel like total crap. Don’t panic! It gets better quick. You will have pain, pressure, poking nurses, doctors stopping in, house cleaning coming in, sheesh…too much. Don’t panic! Lol Your first full day home will be very uncomfortable. You will be recovering from surgery, working on almost no sleep, and trying to understand your new plumbing. I had anxiety from the anesthesia, was wicked tired, and cranky. Don’t panic! Don’t worry about hitting goals on these first two days, people rarely do. Take meds on time, create a schedule. I was on oxy and nausea meds for two days. By day three only Tylenol. See if you prefer hot or cold liquids. I found warm better. You will feel like an elephant is sitting on your chest…pressure from the gas. Don’t panic, it’s normal and will go away. Even being prepared on this and reading for 5 months, it was bad. Every swallow hurt a bit (pressure flare) but it eases slowly. By day 4 I feel great, almost normal even. Isn’t the human body amazing? Full liquids, full protein, no meds. Remember don’t panic! There were times I wanted too!! (alright, I did a little, most do) Good luck, you got this!”

Insurance doesn't cover bariatric surgery...now what?
Bandedbut replied to LMorales's topic in Insurance & Financing
This is something you would need to talk to your HR dept about. My understanding (and I could be wrong) is that each company negotiates their rates with the insurance company, and there are things they can choose to not cover in order to keep the costs down for ALL employees. They can't just add it for one person. Bariatric surgery is getting more common, so maybe your employer might choose to add it durning the next open enrollment period, or, to cut rising costs, eliminate services. Unless you have a life event (like loosing your job, marriage, birth of a child etc) your husband can only add you to his plan during open enrollment. And your company's plan can't change until the next open enrollment. Most companies that wouldn't be effective until Jan 1 2024 (but not all, my company has open enrollment in the spring) Find out first if your husbands plan even covers it, and what the deductible/co-pay would be. You could start all the presurgery requirements now, as that usually takes about 6 months. Sounds like IF, everything works out, the soonest you could have the surgery under insurance (and a lot of things could go wrong to not align) would be Jan 2024. Or, do self pay and you could be recovering in a matter of weeks. There are low to 0 interest medical financing plans, and you can even pay those bills with an HSA or FSA card. It all depends on your financial situation and patience. I totally understand your disappointment, I felt the same way when I found out it wasn't covered under my insurance. I had determined the VSG was the right path for me and had my hopes up, and was crushed. I didn't want to wait any longer, and self pay was the best option. -
February 2023 surgery dates!
Rdy4Change replied to Erin18's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my sleeve on the 8th and have been doing well this last week. The only medication I have an issue with is the multivitamin/horse pill 🤣 -
Don't overthink it. You will be concentrating on getting your fluids and protein in. Walk around as much as you can to shift the gas pains. Sleep when you are not doing any of these things. Drinking different temperatures can help. Your second week is so much easier. Everyone gets nervous, we are human and are built to fear the unknown. The hospital staff will put you at ease. Good luck

Pregnancy after WLS
LilaNicole20 replied to LilaNicole20's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just for a little update, I’m almost 1 year post op and about 34 weeks pregnant. I had lost a few pounds during my first trimester and so from my actual starting weight when I found out I was pregnant, I still have only gained about 20lbs (I was close to goal weight when I found out I was pregnant, 185lbs at 5’11). I am finding that I cant each as much as I have been the closer I get to my due date as I am out of space. My blood pressure has been consistently low, 110/70 and he is measuring in the 44th percentile. -
I'm sending lots of love and prayers for you. I too sometimes think that I feel regret. I was sleeved on 1/26/23 and had many complications. I think back to why I got the procedure to help me see things differently. I focus on the goal and what it could be and not what it currently is. I'm happy that you are able to eat and drink. Even though it may take you some time. I'm still on the liquid diet phase one as I can't keep anything down. I have had 2 more upper gis and 1 endoscopy since my procedure to see what is causing my many issues. So far it seems that my sleeve is too narrow so they dilated it a few. As well as my surgeon said my stomach twisted after my sleeve procedure. Which is very rare but it happens. So I'm still in the midst of figuring out how or why or if things will subside. I do hope to be able to puréed something in the near future. I say this to say that no matter how hard we think we may have it there is someone out there who have it two or three times as bad. With all of this I also have gerd and broke out really bad on my face and chest. The fee sips of water that i'm able to tolerate Im thankful for. I try to remain positive because I don't know what the future hold. I just know that I want to be safe and healthy and of course happy. Hang in there as many have told me. I believe this too shall pass. I hope and pray for you that things ease up for you. It can definitely be hard and challenging with all the obstacles and with every one being different. You got this and I'm here for you. Please don't hesitate to reach out. xo

Hydration, walking, and protein. That’s pretty much all you need to know! Have a variety of sugar free drinks, broth, and popsicles at home, every ounce counts and your body needs it! Some people (including myself) struggle with drinking plain water right after surgery so having the variety definitely helped. My surgeon wanted two 20 minute walks a day as soon as I went home. When the weather was bad I went to Walmart, Kohl’s, or target to do some laps so that I could get 20 minutes of walking in. Protein shakes and yogurt were about all I had for the first two weeks, so maybe pick out a few different kinds so that it doesn’t get monotonous. Best of luck!!

Don't cut back on your calories unless your team told you to. You are so low that your body will be holding onto the nourishment to counteract the exercise you are doing. Trusting the process is a tough learning curve that we all have to learn. Hold your nerve, the stall will break

How did you do on your pre-op diet?
summerseeker replied to mcipanda's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The pre op diet is a doozie isn't it. 99% of people really struggle with the limitations, its the ultimate cruelty for fat people. The thought of the surgery starting and having to end due to a fatty liver kept me on the straight and narrow for the most part. I did break twice in the 3 week of my torture, I ate 2 small packets of Jerky ! This caused me so much worry that it was not worth the cheat. I lost 15lbs. I was allowed caffeine [ thank the lord] any low carb vegetable, a quart of skimmed milk, 2 low fat yogurts, 2 items of fruit. Sugar free jelly and popsicles a day. It was winter so I ate lots of asian style vegetable broth and curried vegetables. I ran to the operating theatre, I was so over the diet. -
Bread after gastric sleeve?
summerseeker replied to Krasavitza's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was allowed the tiny packets of super crispy melba toast at about 6 weeks after surgery. I was told it dissolves quickly. All carbs are still a bit on the heavy side for me. I eat the very occasional slice of super seeded wholemeal but its best toasted crisp. I tried some tiny bites of pitta with humous last week and it wedged in my tummy for hours. I felt awful and nauseous. Nothing was off limits as far as my team were concerned after about 10 weeks. You need to get answers from your team because they all have different ideas on how to go forwards -
stall. Just stick to your program and stay off the scale for a few days. It'll soon break and you'll be on your way again.

So it’s been a little over 3 months since my surgery. I haven’t lost any weight for the last two weeks. I actually think I gained a lb or two! ( if my scale is accurate lol). Despite efforts of trying to exercise more. Walking up to 4 miles a day plus riding stationary bike 20 minutes most days! Also been cutting back and only eating 500 to 650 calories a day. What is going on?!?!?

2/21/23 Sleeves - how is your recovery going?
Victoria_Faith replied to Victoria_Faith's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yeah - I hit a stall and am still on liquids. In a couple days I get to move to pureed foods. Hopefully will get over this hump and see continued progress as I move on to real food and keep my activity up. I've experienced everything you're talking about the chest pressure and stomach pain, too - I think that's just the new normal to watch out for. -
2/21/23 Sleeves - how is your recovery going?
smanzi40 replied to Victoria_Faith's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had my sleeve on 2/22. Feeling pretty good. Today is the first day I actually feel hungry. I am still on a liquid diet until week 3. If I drink too fast or too much my chest hurts getting it down then I get a pain in my stomach. I am down 13lbs since DOS. Excited for that, but also nervous once I start eating solids I am going to be at a stand still. -
How did you do on your pre-op diet?
Arabesque replied to mcipanda's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The withdrawal from caffeine, sugar, etc. can be awful. Headaches, shakes, cold sweats, …. and the craving for them can be greater. Thankfully the first week is usually the worst. My surgeon recommends different diets for different patients but the all shake diet is known as hell week in his office. I’d done the shake diet twice before (two shake meals & one low carb, low fat meat & vegetable/salad meal) so I was much relieved when the dietician said I was to do keto for the two weeks. No calorie requirement or macro goals just high fat, high protein, low carb, low sugar. (She also said keto was a good way to kick start my weight loss but not as a long term diet.) I lost about 5kgs. -
How did you do on your pre-op diet?
mcipanda replied to mcipanda's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Omgosh, on day 13 your surgery got post poned?? That must’ve been frustrating! I’m really happy you were able to have the surgery eventually. Do you remember what you had for your liquid diet? Was it all protein shakes or other? I’m thinking I may move to liquids the last three days. Just wanted to see what helped you 😊 -
How did you do on your pre-op diet?
Elidh replied to mcipanda's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was on a 2-week all liquid pre-op diet. Fortunately, I felt happy during it. I didn’t agonize over what I could or couldn’t, should or shouldn’t eat. Every day brought me closer to surgery, and that was exciting.. On the evening of Day 13, I got a call from the surgical nurse letting me know all surgeries were cancelled due to Covid. This was in March 2020. So I had another few months of food funerals, but nothing too crazy. When I was scheduled again for VSG four months later, I was happy to go back on the liquid diet. I knew I could do it; the first time was a rehearsal! I guess it’s all a matter of attitude and keeping a positive mindset. -
How did you do on your pre-op diet?
mcipanda posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello all! I’m on day 6 of a 2-week pre-op diet and can feel my brain working against me. I’ve got it a little better than most with the diet requiring less than 40 carbs per day and no more than 1200 calories. My nutritionist said she doesn’t mind if I go above the calories limit so long as I don’t exceed 40 carbs. I’ve been squeaky clean so far, even when I went to the movies last night (salivation is real lol), but I just cut caffeine completely and my body is not having any of it. I started to negotiate with myself - “Just one Oreo isn’t going to screw up the whole plan” and then snapped myself out of it by making a cup of decaf tea. How did you all do on the pre op diet? I feel like I must be super weak if I’m struggling to do this for 14 days 😂 -
Yes after the surgery I’m on a 2 week liquid, 2 week purée and then 2 week soft food. We’ll do great. I keep hearing about the discomfort with the gas. My dr prescribed some medicine for it already. So we shall see

I’m doing it to get me back on track. A week of going through the steps isn’t going to make someone gain a bunch of weight, as long as they stick to how they’re supposed to eat when it’s over. Gotta get your mind back on track.

I know. I'm so excited. I lost 23 pounds on a week and a half on the liquid diet. When is your again? Sent from my SM-S908U using BariatricPal mobile app

LGS 2/15/23. I’m struggling mentally with all of this. I have regrets and wish I never had this surgery. I’m probably grieving about all of this. It just seems so miserable to watch everyone else enjoy their food and while I can only have pureed eggs and such in such small portions. If not I’ll end up sick. I’ve not had nausea or vomiting but trying to time things where I’m not eating and drinking at the same time and waiting 40 minutes after a meal to drink and trying to hit the hydration goals and trying to get the 60 grams of protein in. It takes eating all day to hit the protein targets but if I’m eating all day I fail at meeting my water goals and the reverse is true when trying to get my protein in. I’m allergic to artificial sweeteners and dairy products so I cant do the shakes, the water based protein drinks make me feel ill, and I’m not at week 4 where I can have soft foods. I’m just hoping all of this will be worth it and it will get better. I completed 2 years of therapy before having the sleeve and started at 211 lbs with a bmi of 37. I think I probably could have chosen a less restrictive option and accomplished the weight loss goals. I need encouraging. I’m not happy ever when I have to put food or drinks to my lips. Additionally its difficult because you cant heat food in the microwave but eating slowly causes it to be cold and so it’s just a struggle I didn’t anticipate which frustrates me terribly because I’m always hungry and always turned off by food because of all this. Pureed food is better than the liquids but Im just not happy and need a safe space to vent. Otherwise things are progressing as expected my t week post op appointment I was down 15 lbs so that’s a win but again I hope this gets better. Is there anyone at least 2 -3 months out from surgery and how’s it going?

Loreley NYC replied to Erin18's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi how everyone is doing? Mine was done 9th February, just starting my week 4. I had my first follow up, some of my meds were changed but so far they found I am recovering ok. How about you?
