Small Medicine cups (bulk from Amazon) to measure out 2 ounces of liquid post surgery. Also a cheap digital food scale to weigh food once I got to solids. I also bought bariatric food containers (like Tupperware measured for protein, veggies, etc,), but NEVER ended up using them. I have a mini fridge I used, and still do, to keep my protein shakes upstairs so I don’t have to run down. Nice, but not necessary, Pre-surgery I had a snow cone/shaved ice machine and 0 calorie sugar free syrup. I thought I was going to die from so much drinking and not chewing. The 0 calorie snow cones were a g-dsend and saved my sanity. I called the dietitian freaking out about a day in when I was starving pre-op (only clear liquids). She told me to chew on ice cubes and after I told her off I asked about snow cones and was back in love with her when she said yes.

I may have missed an earlier post but is there a reason you have to have tomato soup for every meal? I have Swansons sipping bone broth in chicken flavor with a little salt since it’s so bland. It gives me a lot more protein. Since you’re about to start the puréed stage, try the small tuna pouches (hickory flavor is the best!) put that in your food processor (I got a tiny 2 cup one at Target for about $20), add some mayonnaise and some seasoning. Purée that stuff really well. It’s really good! I watched a lot of YouTube videos about the puréed stage by this lady (TimeToShrink) who is very creative with her food! Don’t be discouraged! You can do this! 😊💕💕

This is my 3rd or 4th 2lb tub of the chocolate truffle nectar after a friend who had WLS in like 2010 recommended it as that’s what her office said to use. I definitely prefer the nectars over the matrix ones as those have weird bits in them. The nectars mix great in water by themselves and don’t have that weird protein taste to them. You can get a sampler pack of the nectars to try them but my favorites have been the chocolate truffle, the roadside lemonade (SO good as a frozen lemonade!), and the unflavored to mix into baked goods. So, yes, I like them. -

Ouch, I hope not! Ten years ago, the accepted opinion was the whey protein was superior for supporting weight loss and preventing muscle catabolism. More recent research supports that a combination of both whey and casein is superior. I specifically picked the 2 brands I did (Premier Protein and Fairlife), because they were both milk protein instead of just whey. I don't know if this will work, but I'm going to try and post some links to research that supports this view: https://www.pnas.org/doi/abs/10.1073/pnas.94.26.14930 https://link.springer.com/article/10.1186/1743-7075-10-46 https://pubs.rsc.org/en/content/articlelanding/2021/FO/D0FO01960G https://journals.physiology.org/doi/full/10.1152/ajpendo.00106.2012 https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/british-journal-of-nutrition/article/effects-of-hydrolysed-casein-intact-casein-and-intact-whey-protein-on-energy-expenditure-and-appetite-regulation-a-randomised-controlled-crossover-study/C90335661B4E43ACA05E7C80032D951F -

Well at the end of the day, you have to follow their recommendations I guess. It's a shame, as I think they have some unsupported beliefs about certain types of protein. I'd love to see the research they are basing this on, as I'm not really finding anything other than internet lore. -
Hello, I am 6 days post op and I find that I’m able to get in my fluids just fine, my protein shakes go down well and I feel nothing. I can eat my sugar free jello and pudding, and I feel nothing. Zero sense of my stomach, no restriction. This may sound stupid but I’m just worried that my new stomach isn’t working. I keep reading how people can’t get their shakes in and I’m over here meeting my fluid and protein goals just fine. Is this normal?? Is my stomach not small enough?

Apparently according to my doctor and dietitian there are multiple types of protein in the premier but not all of those are fully absorbed. The 100% isolate protein can be fully absorbed by the body. So basically the permeir boasts 30 grams of protein and there are 30 grams in it but the body is only capable of absorbing half of that due to the types of protein being blended together. I don’t know how true that is and am definitely not an expert but that is how they explained it to me. -

I find this really odd? Premier Protein is Milk Protein, meaning it contains both Whey Protein, and Casein. Both are considered complete proteins, so I'm not following the comment about it being blended or unable to be fully absorbed. Both are present in all mammalian milk, including human, though the amounts can vary from animal to animal. In cows milk, Casein makes up ~80% of the protein content. Milk Protein actually replicates that. Typically Casein is slower to metabolize, meaning it should help tide over the hunger longer. Whey Isolate is quicker to metabolize, so would be great as a recovery drink after a hard workout, but may leave you feeling hungry sooner. -
Vegetarian saying no to keto diet

i have two options - 50 total carbs a day or meal replacement shakes and one small meal a day. talk to your nutritional consultant to have a vegetarian preop diet to shrink your liver. -

Thank you! I hope you are right. Oh wow, that is pretty restrictive for 2 weeks. Maybe it will be ok because that is a lot of protein and protein is good for making you feel fuller. I would get lots of different flavors to at least have variety, unless you are good at having repetitive flavors. Your program is not messing around with that liver shrinking diet since that's basically no carbs. You got this! It's a temporary test of your willpower and will get easier after surgery. -
Vegetarian saying no to keto diet
Tomo replied to imaginegirl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I would talk to other surgeons. My surgeon is a major vegetable and fruit fan. As soon as I could fit it in my diet, his goal for me was 7 to 14 servings of vegetable/fruits a day. "No matter what. Just make it happen." It is great for weight loss and health. He isn't specific about the type of protein, just as long as I get 65 to 100g a day. -
Vegetarian saying no to keto diet
Sleeve_Me_Alone replied to imaginegirl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
It might be helpful to remember what a true keto diet is vs. what diet culture makes it out to be. A TRUE keto diet simply means eating few enough carbohydrates that your body enters ketosis where it is no longer using glucose as its primary fuel source. It is NOT inherently a high fat, meat only diet. That is what diet culture has turned it into. There are lots of vegetarians who follow a healthy, whole foods based ketogenic diet. Additionally, the amount of carbs that allow ketosis will vary WIDELY from person to person so unless you are testing regularly, you won't really even know if you are truly in ketosis or not. Now, that being said, most surgeons will say that WLS patients eat a keto diet simply because your primary focus will be protein and your intake will be so low that by virtue of the volume and type of foods you'll be eating you'll be in ketosis. Immediately post-op, you won't be able to eat enough beans (or anything else for that matter) to get in your full protein requirement, let alone extra grains & veggies on top. That is not, however, a requirement (generally speaking) nor is it permanent. Over time, as you're able to eat more food and a wider variety, you'll very likely see your carbohydrate intake increase. I would say, it may be helpful to revisit the conversation with the surgeon and/or dietitian to ensure they understand your needs as a vegetarian and that they are able to support you and tailor the post-op diet to your needs. If they can't or won't then it may be helpful to consult with another surgeon. Ultimately, being HEALTHY post-op is the primary concern and that requires eating a metric crap ton of protein. Can you do that as a vegetarian? Absolutely! But it will require extra support and possibly some creativity and flexibility on your part. Best of luck to you! -

My list contains 100% Isolate protein powder. Brands are unjury, celebrate, nectar, body fortress, inspire, isopure and dymatize. I am a little defeated right now cause I did loose the 5 pounds requested but have to start on the 31st with only water and 3 meal replacement shakes a day… I might die y’all. I could have done liquid easy cause I love soup but only 3 shakes??? -
I was a bit hungry during the liquid stage. All the protein shakes tasted horrible to me, but I liked the soups and the thin oatmeal, although I was a bit sick of oatmeal after a whole week. Now that I can eat pureed foods I have to say that the single scrambled egg I had this morning was absolutely delicious and the tomato soup I had for lunch was not bad. So, no, not everything tastes bad. However, I don't always know when I'm hungry. Like today at lunch, I still felt too full from the egg, so I didn't have anything. I didn't get hungry in the afternoon, but I felt more and more nauseous and finally thought it might be a good idea to have some soup, which did make me less nauseous.

Looking to see if my Dr. Will do the revision because of my Gerd
Daja replied to lavette43's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I did not have to stop my reflux meds, ( thank goodness, as I was on 4). Quite frankly, a barium swallow will also tell them if you have Reflux, though it’s not always 100% accurate (but if your GERD is bad enough and the tech and radiologist is good it should show) and it not nearly as bad a test. If you appeal, definitely add in the poor quality of life, how much medication you are taking, and reiterate that it’s not for weight loss. If your dr is willing to do a peer to peer with the insurance company, that also helps. I included that my GI suggested surgery and told me there were no more medical management options available left to me, therefore, undergoing more tests to prove what we already knew undermined his professional opinion as well as that of the surgeon who agreed with him. I also insisted that a GI Dr review my case not any dr (insurance companies will use any dr available and I’ve had podiatrists and ob-gyn’s deny me because they are going by a list of requirements as opposed to knowing a disease condition) These are things that helped me get approved. Best to you and hope all goes well.. -
5 months post op hair loss
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to carolinac413's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Biotin is more for the quality and health of the hair itself. It really does nothing for the scalp and roots. It doesn't slow or prevent hair loss (no matter what the interwebs say lol ) The best thing to do is just wait it out. Honestly. I know it sucks (my hair always shed more because of pcos but now it's SHEDDING and it's bothersome, but I know it's normal and it'll stop, so I'm just riding it out) but meeting your protein goals is the most important. Hair needs protein to grow, but it can't produce it. Without protein, your hair will shed and not be able to come back in. For me, I'm staying at the top of the protein requirement (80-90g per day) just to make sure my hair will have what it needs. I use hair masks and all that, but it's mostly because I like my hair soft, shiny, and not frizzy (I have hair that will poof out like a poodle if I don't keep it under control). They don't help with regrowth, but I like the routine of self care, and I like how my hair looks and feels after. -
I went into surgery having lost 9 lbs during the preop liquid diet. Then two days after surgery I had gained back 7. but today I am 4 days post op and I am back down the original 9 and have lost 2 more. I am having a hard time with eating. Or drinking rather. I have no desire to drink my protein shakes and they make me nauseous, so I am basically drinking water and eating sugar free jello. Yesterday I tried some soup and got about 4 oz down. I'm just going to keep trying. everything tastes thick and gross to me. I feel like I should be doing better than this. Are others experiencing a complete lack of desire for foods? Does everything you eat just not taste good?

Mine specifically listed premier shakes as a good option for me. I actually had several I could choose from and can mix and match as I want. It is kind of worrying to me that there are so many different protocols. What if I'm on a bad one? I'm mostly glad that my program has more options but at the same time I'm worried that a stricter plan would be more effective. I guess time will tell. What shakes did they say you can have? -
Day 4 post op and I’m finally starting to feel an improvement in the soreness. Doing well getting all my liquids and protein in so far. The only thing I really have to complain about is the GAS. Land sake’s!

I'm also 14 days full liquids, 5 days post-op. I can move to puree on Sept 1. I think I might try liquifying yogurt today. So far I've had strained lobster bisque, tomato basil, and squash soups. Been mainly focusing on trying to get all my water in. I've found if I pour a little 2 oz. Cup of water with my protein mixed in and time it every 10 minutes it helps remember to drink. My incisions are itchy too.

Y’all I am currently working on my last pre op appointment and this is a lot to take in! Wonder why some doctors said premier protein shakes and mine said absolutely not… they did sort of explain that premier is blended protein and won’t fully absorb, but why are doctors so different ?? -

Chocolate almond smoothie for breakfast! Weirdly tastes like a Wendy’s frosty. A little higher in calories but you could save about 150 calories (and add 5g protein) if you switched to peanut butter powder and left out the heavy cream. Just remember you also need a cup of ice for either one. Im also including the amounts for the one with peanut butter powder (the last picture) in case you’re feeling fancy and want to make it. *Currently halfway through and I’ll have to drink the rest later as it’s oddly filling. -
If you are in the puree stage, I highly recommend this! To add more protein, I added some pureed canned chicken. This is one of the better puree meals I have made so far. https://www.food.com/recipe/shellys-baked-ricotta-324036
