I am pre-op for bypass on 10/28. As part of the process, I had to do a stomach emptying study, and it showed that my stomach clears it’s contents faster than normal. This isn’t a problem, if it emptied slow it would be. My question is, has anyone else had this and does this mean I may have an easier time getting my water in post-op?

Thanks everyone for your kind words. I am pretty well set on having the bypass surgery. My sister did it several years ago and has made a total life transformation. Have been reading up on both the bypass and the sleeve surgeries, and just feel that the bypass is more of what I’m looking for.

Hey T.C. I'm eight weeks post-op (gastric bypass) and I've started working out. I'm 65. Have no blood pressure/cholesterol issues-thankfully! My starting weight before surgery was 311. I'm now 270 -in just 8 weeks. I'm super excited about that. What I would suggest since your calorie level is so low is to do a 30-minute walking routine. Once you start with solid food, I would then up the work out to a non-stop work out. To give you some idea, here's what I do. Monday, Wednesday and Friday: Warm-up (that time doesn't count against my total allotted time) When I feel warmed up, I work upper body with a weight that I can handle and I do around 3 to 4 sets of each body part with 12-14 reps per set. As I add weight, I drop my reps by two. So: 14, 12, 10 etc. Right after I've done my sets, I hit a heavy bag for 3 minutes and then immediately go to my upper body routines. No resting. That's the key part. Tuesday, Thursday: I do cardio only...Seven minutes on a treadmill with a pretty steep incline and a higher pace...then hit the heavy bag for another 3 minutes and then go right back to the treadmill. You're probably wondering why I don't work legs. At my age, I have to bum knees and don't want to do too much to aggravate them. Not to mention, four months ago I had a total shoulder replacement and so the weight training works perfectly with my shoulder rehab. I hope that helps!

Frustrated with insurance denial
Starwarsandcupcakes posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I called my surgeon’s office today because he submitted for a VSG to RYGB and was told it was denied because they want me to do 6months of supervised weight loss. I just had my VSG in December 2019! plus, their reason isn’t even listed under the revision surgery section in the handbook. Since then I’ve developed a new hiatal hernia, GERD to my mid esophagus and esophagitis. Of course I’ll file an appeal but I’m just frustrated. I’m sick of only getting 4-5hrs of sleep a night because the chest pain from the GERD is so bad it wakes me up. Im sick of taking the max allowed PPIs on top of 8-12 tums a day, and Thorazine for the hiccups causes by the GERD. I sent my surgeon a message asking for another prescription because I can’t take it anymore. I'm jus so frustrated. I just don’t want to be in pain anymore. -
Ill bet. I go back to logging every now and then. Why did you decide to revise? I am thinking about it for nasty GERD.
-
How about dumping? Does anyone experience it and what's type of foods cause it for you ? I am going in on the 10th for my revision and and wondering.

Estimated Weight Loss?
Crick replied to greenwitch17's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Exactly. My surgeon told me 60-65% of excess weight was what to expect. She recommended sleeve for where I was (around a 40-41 BMI when I had my first consult) and for the fact you are unlikely to have dumping issues or absorption issues. However, before she made the final decision I had to do an endoscopy to show that I didn’t have reflux issues or that would mean bypass. As Luna Girl said, you have to commit to follow the plan and change you eating habits. I did not stray from the pre-op or post-op diet stages, and only ate the things that were appropriate for each stage. Now I’m not going to lie - I’ve had a cookie here or there or a small ice cream a few times - but I log everything and I have one on occasion as a special treat - I don’t eat 6 cookies in one sitting - actually, I don’t think I’ve even had 6 cookies in total since surgery! And I was probably 5 months along before I had any of those things in small doses. Surgery is a tool - not a magic bullet - and I think sometimes it’s easy to lose sight of that. The last thing I will say is that my only regret is not doing this sooner. You’ve already done the hardest part in taking the first step - stick with it and good luck on your journey! -
So I had gastric bypass on 5/17. My diet starts pretty much at a puree phase for a week, then moved to soft food. I have experienced no nausea at all, and no stomach issues whatsoever at any part of this - even spicy food, and one time early this week when I had a small piece of chocolate. Friday I a ground turkey for the first time with a little taco seasoning, and some fat free refried beans. I was fine that night, but was really gassy. Saturday morning I woke up with stomach pain and had to "go to the bathroom" several times I to the late afternoon. Yesterday evening my stomach pain got really bad. I took Imodium last night, have been taking both Imodium and gas x since (actually started the gas x on Friday). It was bad enough to keep me awake most of the night last night. It feels like a really bad menstrual cramp, except covering my entire abdomen. Ate a little food yesterday, but today I'm just sticking with water. So my question is this - I am guessing that I didn't tolerate the food I ate on Friday, so how long will this last? Is there anything I can do other than Imodium and gasx to help with my abdominal pain? Thanks everyone, I really appreciate it! [emoji4]

I'm excited and nervous about my upcoming gastric bypass on Dec 5th. Any suggestions for preparing myself for this. 😁 of course my doctor and nutritionist have gone over things, however, they have not gone through the surgery Thanks!

In Mexico, relaxing! So glad to say that my band is gone for good, and I was able to revise to the sleeve in one surgery on Saturday, May 11th! After following everyone else's journey for long, I'm finally into the sleeved part of mine!! Feeling fantastic. No pain, just some nausea the first 2 days. Should have done this years ago!!

Some doctor's don't recommend them. Others follow the vitamin protocol commonly prescribed for bypass patients. Still others don't recommend anything more than a multi. Listen to your body and make sure you are getting routine bloodwork. This will tell you if you need vitamins/supplements added. My doctor is more on the conservative side so I was put on a vitamin/supplement regimen and we have removed/added things based on bloodwork.

Dad is thinking of getting sleeved, any advice I should give him
Pinkgirl1234 replied to pickle25's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Make sure dad goes to the most experienced surgeon. He needs to talk to his dr.Do the research and get it done.I had revision to bypass and I am so happy. -
I didn't have any choice in location, and never thought to ask. Allergan has two ports, a regular one and a low profile. My surgeon uses the standard port in original op, but will do a revision if the patient wants one later. He did tell me in a conversation after my op that he's found surgeons have a wide range of port locations, all due to personal preference. He likes his location (to the left of the belly button) because it doesn't have a lot of tubing running to it, and it has some fat to cushion it. I don't like it because some pants bother me along the waistband. But it cannot be seen, even if I were to wear a two-piece bathing suit. Unlikely at my age.

Need some advice - I am still in a LOT of pain 2 weeks after surgery
TulipStar replied to thistledo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I got some "zingers" around the port area still up to 6 weeks post-surgery. I thought it was unusual too to still have pain at 2 weeks po, I was still sleeping in a reclining position. It eventually went away...I would say that at about week 3, it started to feel better, but I still had some pain. Anyway, then I found out week 8 po that my port had flipped so part of the pain I had experienced was my port coming unstitched from the muscle. Since I had my revision surgery, it is like night day, the pain I had from the 1st surgery was awful in the port area. The revision surgery port pain went away in about a week. Be patient and take it easy. Good luck!! -
Dad is thinking of getting sleeved, any advice I should give him
pickle25 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I was sleeved 19/10/15 and I've bee absolutely dropping the weight with some pretty troubling side effects, but mostly doing ok. My dad is now made up that he's finally going to bite the bullet and also be sleeved. We've talked about it a fair bit and he's been put off by issues I've had. I've stuck on the path of this has really changed my life in so many ways and I don't regret it at all, although there's been negatives it's better than dying of a heart attack, and that it gives me the restriction I need to succeed. Dad hasn't been well. He's 170+ kgs and has had a few heart attacks. I'm not sure he'll make 60. He has lost up to 20kgs before on his own and is happy to exercise, but finds food restriction the hardest. We are both terrible coke drinkers. And fast food addicts. My surgeon operates locally but is mainly at another hospital 50 mins away. I went to him because originally I was considering bypass and the local one didn't do bypass. Do you think it's better to stick to someone we know or try another person? I didn't like that he wasn't contactable when I had a problem with my sutures, another thing that put dad off. Also I'm young, Dad isn't. For me it's been about getting to enjoy my life before it passes me by and to be healthy for my daughter. Dad doesn't mind being fat. He does love food though. Any over 45's have anything to offer? Any help I can get would be appreciated. I don't want to loose my Dad, and Idont want him to be scared. -
So, I went to the seminar last night. The surgeon said the following statistics 1 in 150 people maintain significant weight loss when left to thier own devices...less than 1% eek! Note: surgery failure = 25% regain BYPASS = 20% SWITCH = 10-15% SLEEVE = 20-25% So, I am looking for long term inspiration. I am fascinated at the Before&After thread. But I'm curious about the long "termers" Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App

keep us posted -- my doc appt is not until 7/7 and my upper GI on 7/2 I also heard my doc's booking Sept and Oct surgeries now -- so I expect it will be december before I can have a revision.

Hello My friends! I had my lapband removal and sleeve revision done on Monday around noon. I have been home since yesterday afternoon and sadly am not one of you who has been pain free. I was hoping I was going to be pretty "ok" especially since I have a high pain tolerance, am younger and felt like I really prepared myself. I feel like absolute death! Sometimes it hurts to sip, hurts to breath, hurts to move, hurts to just be.... I know this will all pass, but I am just discouraged with the amount of pain I am in. I was sent home with liquid Hydrocodone and am allowed to take 10 ml every 6 hours... I have been using gas X pills as well. They seems to help (a little) when first taken, but definitely only about 1-2 hours long out of the 6 hour time frame. Hope everyone is well. Just focusing on getting myself better

Hi Liz, I too am a newbie to this. I watched the seminar on my laptop...lol...4 times!!! My sis had gastric bypass...which is not my thing, so I am vaguely familiar with how it goes. Banding is more my speed. Not to mention, the weight loss is longer -which is better for me. I too have three kids, daughter will be 19 in Oct, son will be 17 in Aug, and little daughter is 9..they are very supportive. Hubby is a little scared I think...funny he isn't the one going under the knife...lol. i can't wait for this to be over I am so excited! I go to the doc on tuesday to get my sleep apnea results, if no apnea, I can schedule the surgery right away, if I do have apnea, i have to get fitted and wear the cpac for 2 weeks prior to surgery. Other than that, I have had all my tests done and my general practicioner has given her blessing. I have been working on it since May and finally its near the time to schedule the surgery. I can't wait to feel good again and get back to the old me!!

Oh I'm sorry ... thought you had the sleeve. Well I had the sleeve and it has been good to me as the bypass has been equally as good to you. I wish you continued success . U look 👏🏾 awesome. -
Ok so I am tyring with one hand pls forgive mistakes I had hand surgery two days ago. I was banded Aug 10 2010. Between that day and today I have had mutliple fills and unfills. Mostly steming from a tight/finicky band. I dont think I have ever vomitted so much in my entire life as I have in the past two years. Painful hiccups, unable to eat with a bra on sometimes. Varring band tightness throughout the day. I current have 4 cc in my band but I have been as high as 6 cc. Originally lost 50lbs but in the last few months have gained half back. My surgeon is pretty much degrading when I go in and have a weight gain. Very non-supportive. During my last visit I broke down and was horrified that I cant work with this stupid band. He suggested we give it a few more weeks... no more then 3 meals a day (DUH) low calorie liquids ( DUH).. tell this to someone who vomits most of the day. Bythe time I get home I feel so weak and horrible I eat bad foods. Anywhoo he said we may need to look at either taking the band out or do a bypass or sleeve. He states he has MANY patientas who just can not work with the band or it doesnt work with them. I need to do something becaue this vomiting and weight fluckuating is very depressing. I am very scared about the bypass although I know many ppl including my mother who has had it done with sucess. Barium swallows show good placement but bad acid reflux despite being on nexium forever. I have not had a upper GI for a year now. I see my GI doc today. Also the thing that scares me when I go to eat a solid food say meat or even a veggie. I can feel it hit my band and my heart starts to beat so hard and fast. I have acutally almost passed out a few times. I get this 75% of the time I eat. Now this can't be good on my heart... Ive told my surgery on more then one occasions but he has brushed it off failing to note in in my medical records. I need some opinions... support.... guidence...someone who understands....

Hi my name is honor I'm from utica ny and Ive been over weight all my life! I got the lap band 3years ago and lost about 80lbs and felt pretty good but was unable to eat food got stuck all the time and due to food getting stuck and getting sick my esophagus swelled up so the dr had to unfill the band and I gained all my weight back and feel so uncomfortable. Well I decided to have a revision and get the bypass I am currently waiting for insurance approval. .they are deciding if they will just approve it due to complications with the band or if I have to do a 3month supervised diet. I am so nervous since I hear some bad stories about the bypass and I feel that my family is not happy about my decision but I need to do this for myself!!

Bypass Surgery tomorrow 12/30/14
onmywaytobeingfound posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Tomorrow is the big day. 16 hours away!! Only my immediate family and my best friend know about this. I'm feeling nervous. A bit overwhelmed by the bad what if's. My doctor is at Riverside Hospital in Columbus, OH. His name is Dr. Sonnanstine. He seems like a great surgeon. His staff just loves him. I can tell it's not fake. Biggest fear with surgery is death, next to that I'd say diminished quality of life. I have 3 daughter's who mean the world to me. I'm doing this not just for me. It's for my family too. With high bp, dislocated disc and knee pain, I feel this is my last resort after many unsuccessful attempts to lose weight, including being put on weight watchers at 8 years old! Please say prayers for me. Prayers for peacefulness and rest. Prayers for the medical staff. Prayers for my family. Thanks all! Jamie -
