you're probably going through the infamous "three week stall" early. I did as well - mine was weeks 2 and 3. Just stick to your program and stay off the scale for a few days. As long as you stick to the program, the stall will eventually break and you'll be on your way again. They usually last 1-3 weeks. constipation is a common issue for WLS patients. It's due to the high protein diet and some of the supplements some of us take (i.e., calcium and iron - both known to back people up). I've been taking a capful of Miralax every morning for years, and so do a lot of others. Other people take things like stool softeners or magnesium tablets - whatever works!

Does anyone have issues with pureed foods? I literally only eating beans, protein shakes, different allowed cheeses and yogurt. I am two weeks since surgery and seen no weight loss in a whole week. Anyone having a hard time going to the bathroom too? Sent from my SM-A326U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

Weight during preop
LookingForward22 replied to Capri81's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m sorry. Sometimes family thinks they are helping or being supportive and they aren’t. Quitting eating won’t help, that may make your body go into starvation mode and hold on to EVERYTHING. Week 2 post op I was barely eating 500 calories and missing my water goals as I transitioned to purées - trying to work out the new foods and making sure things sat well, and I didn’t loose a pound. Once I started hitting my protein, water and calorie goals - I started to see movement again. If you are weighing and measuring everything and your nutritionist is working with you - stick to your plan and try to implement any changes they suggest… stay the course. You will be doing everything right post surgery and hit stalls or see fluctuations - just stay the course and things will correct. Best advice I had on this board was this journey is not a straight line down… it’s a jagged line that will go up, plateau and go down - but if you stick with it you will get there. Keep working with your nutritionist… if you feel like they aren’t listening to you ask if there is another you can work with or talk to. Keep hydrated and try to keep your calories in range and meet any goals they give you. You have lots of support here. If your program has not told you to loose, maintain or other instructions - keep checking in and working with them and ask them directly about your concerns. Hopefully they can put your mind at ease. -
do you think that you may not qualify because you haven’t lost weight? do not worry about that. it’s more of a formality that insurance companies put out there. I guess the thought is that overweight people have never tried to loose weight so they should try once before surgery lol have you consulted with a nutritionalist yet? that can help you prepare for the bariatric journey even if it’s not required. do you have an app or journal where you track off of your food intake? for me, this was important to gauge what i was eating and where i needed to adjust. i currently am doing a pre op keto diet and use “Carb Master” to look at all of my nutritional macros (protein/fat/carbs/calories). it helped me actually shed some weight before going down to keto low carb levels (and been fantastic since hitting that level) i will say that it is important to understand your nutritional habits and change unhealthy ones if possible before surgery to avoid issues. knowledge of self is true power in this situation! have you completed the other insurance requirements or still working on them?

Good morning from sunny San Diego (practically blinding this morning in front of my east-facing windows). My appointment with my primary yesterday had to be rescheduled to tomorrow, so I'll know more about my BP situation then. My BP has been steadily coming down and, with meds, was 135/80 yesterday, so they're working, but she may want to adjust. I'll also have her take a look at my incisions as the gluey stuff is coming off. I'm getting really bored of the full liquid phase (2). I rotate among 3 flavors of soup and 3 flavors of protein shake, but it's getting old. 5 days until I get scrambled eggs and mashed fruit/veg and cottage cheese! I just hit 20 pounds total lost today, even though I'm only down a net 5 since the surgery a week and a half ago (took a long time for the post-op water retention to let go). Yesterday, my cute pill organizer arrived. It contains my multi, calcium, & B12 and also my Rx (2 for BP, 1 for preventing gallstones, 1 for stomach acid--those last 2 are only for 3 months, I think). I like that it's compact but still large enough to hold everything because once I leave the house more, it will be handy to toss 1 day's compartment into a purse.

Hang in there I sat for nearly a week at a stand still once I hit the purées with the same worry. Started to move a little again today (first day of week 2 of purées). I’m convinced it was because I was adjusting Amit not hitting all my water and protein goals, as I adjusted to the purées. But who knows… it could have been any one of a dozen things. Just keep working your program and stick to the basics. -
Today I’m starting my first day of week 3 post op (2nd week of purées). I had hoped by today I would have achieved one of my specific mini goals. I was hoping to end the month under 300 lbs. Seeing that “2” in front of my weight for the first time in nearly 20 yrs. was something have have dreamed about but always fell short of since crossing that 300 point. The closest I got to that on my own was 309. Started out strong loosing about 23 lbs my first week, only to hit a big stall during my second week. I was struggling on purées to hit my water, protein and calorie goals. I won’t lie, I was prepared for a stall week 3 - but not week 2. It was so frustrating hovering right at the mark 300 on the scales, but I refused to let myself get discouraged and focused how far I had come so far!! This morning I hopped on the scales and low and behold I had movement and I’m solidly under 300!!! It may only be just barely, but I’m at 298 and that feels soooooooooo good! There is nothing quite as motivating as hitting goals and making progress… even small goals. June 2021 - my heaviest was 382. I lost 50 pounds leading up to my pre op liquid diet. Another 10 pounds was lost on the liver shrining diet. Today I am 16 pounds away from having lost 100 pounds! I can’t even believe I am saying that!!! That seems attainably close for the first time ever (to loose 100 pounds!). I have a long way to go. My final goal is less of a number and more of a feeling of being healthy - what feels right … but I’m more motivated than ever to tick off these mini goals one at a time and get to maintenance.

Just don't give the stalls any thought at all. I stressed through them and drove myself crazy since my surgery exactly one year ago today. I managed to lose over 110 pounds. I am currently in a two month stall and it is not bothering me...I am sticking to my routine, getting my protein and water, doing my exercise and it will eventually pass. Or maybe my body is at the weight it intends to be at...which is fine. But you will being losing again if you are not at target, just make sure you are sticking to your calorie, water, protein and exercise plan.

Need more protein!! Please help

Bone broth. It has more protein than regular broth and is lovely to sip on warm. It was a life saver for me in the early stages - counts as fluid and protein! -
Was Just told not a good candidate for surgery by nutritionist
LookingForward22 replied to SymphonyOfDreams's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My program wanted me to implement eating habits that would make the transition into the liquid diet & post-op eating plan easier… including a focus of protein, fluids and portion control. We also touched on my emotional eating some - but things happened and progressed so quickly … not as deeply as I would have ideally liked. BUT I have continued to work on those things post op and I’m really grateful for the time I had pre-op to help me get ready. -

I’m not surprised that she focused on protein. That will be your main focus post surgery. Your fluids, protein and vitamins will be all you take in for a while and since you will be eating smaller amounts they will need to be the main focus thereafter in order to be able to meet your daily requirements. -
If your talking about pre op I was allowed some food. Just lean meat and low carb veggies in small amounts so that was easier. Post op it really was just shakes or clear protein drinks, broth, sugar free popsicles and jello. Yes it got pretty darn boring but once you get to purées it’s a little better and soft food is even easier. Basically you just gotta think of your food as medicine for the next few weeks. It’s what your body needs right now and it’s not forever.

Was Just told not a good candidate for surgery by nutritionist
SymphonyOfDreams replied to SymphonyOfDreams's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
The timeline and me not currently being a good candidate were not brought up in the 60 minute phone call. As for high risk nutrition behavior, I can only imagine the fact that I am an emotional eater. I am purposefully researching therapists to address this, and find it odd that the RD wants me to see RDs for 4 months about this. Frankly, I found the call a little confusing. She asked me what a typical food day looks like right now. I am not eating healthy at the moment, neither the choices nor quantity. She did give some hints about healthier selections, but really concentrated on protein. It was brought up several times during the conversation. -
Trapped wind 3 weeks after surgery
Former heavyweight replied to Former heavyweight's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi thanks for the reply. I'm currently having a protein shake and a little bit of (usually tomato) soup, maybe half a standard tin. I was on 2 protein shakes but since COVID that has gone back to 1. I don't think I get acid at night, I take an antacid everyday as per my surgeons prescription, and haven't woken up with any acid. I do sleep with a CPAP though. Hope this helps -
I was only on a clear liquid diet 1 day after surgery, then a full liquid diet for 2 weeks. I most had protein shakes and protein Gatorade. But, I would also buy soups and strain them because the bought broth was too bland. I would drink the soup broth and other people would eat the rest. I also had a few yogurts but I am not a big fan of yogurt so maybe 2 or 3 times in 2 weeks. So yea, I was very focused on hitting protein and fluids so mainly stuck with the shakes and Gatorade protein drinks.

This. I've been relying on Protein Water since surgery as a two-for-one method for getting in protein and fluids. Couldn't manage without it! -

Yes thank you so much for this info, im buying those protein 20 drinks tomorrow to try!! Crossing my fingers 🤞🏾🤞🏾😩 -
4 days post-op and finally got all my Water in today, as well as Protein. Started on Protein Shakes and yogurt yesterday with no issues at all. Getting around is still difficult, my right side gets very sore, very quickly. But I got in four circuits (5 laps each) of the downstairs today, and then tomorrow I’m going to add a set of stairs on each circuit. Greatly enjoying my little two oz cups of yogurt and I’m trying out freezing my protein shakes in popsicle molds over night to see how I like them that way, though it’s not difficult to drink them. Just two days of full liquids and I’m so ready to start adding in Soup. Bone Broth was starting to make me gag, so I had to stop drinking it. I think if I could add it to thin out a cream soup it might be better, but I have to wait until Friday for that! Still haven’t lost anything. I did gain 8lbs after surgery from day of surgery weight, and this morning I was back to that weight. Hoping to start seeing the scale move after I shed this fluid retention.

Are you pre or post surgery? You should have been given a list of foods to eat & avoid through each of the stages. If you didn't, ask for one as there are often differences in plans. Generally, in the post surgery liquid stage protein shakes are the main go to, then broths, cream soups, yoghurt smoothies (can be yoghurt blended with milk). You can increase your protein intake by including protein waters, milk & adding protein powder to the cream soups.

Pregnant 5 months after VSG surgery
LilaNicole20 replied to LettyVSG's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
Yay!! Congrats to you too. I’m excited to hear how your pregnancy progresses. I am having the morning sickness now and it isn’t fun. I’m still losing weight but I also see myself eating more often - all throughout the day. My nutritionist said I just need to aim for 80-100g protein each day and continue my vitamin routine. I haven’t yet seen my OB, hopefully this week or next. This is so exciting and I’m so glad you’re in this boat with me! Cheers (minus the beers) -

Are you still in the purée stage? It is hard. I added unflavored protein powder to soups or mashed potatoes. If I made a roast with veggies for the family I would blend up a little bit of all of it with some of the juice essentially making my own baby food, but it was good! I also ate a lot of soft scrambled eggs or even soft boiled eggs or made egg salad from hard boiled eggs. -

Hi! I'm 7 weeks post-op but I clearly remember being 2 weeks post-op, I found Protein2O bottled beverage really helps me get my protein in! Its protein infused water, You get 15g of protein from a 16oz (average sized) bottle of it! It's sugar free and counts as protein AND clear liquid! Also, my doctor has me drinking Fairlife milk, its 13g for an 8 oz glass vs. its also lactose free and has 50% less sugar than regular milk! Its pretty popular in my area. -
My clear liquid diet only lasted 3 days, and I was in the hospital for 2.5 of those, but I had broth, jell-o, and herbal tea. I've been on a cloudy liquid diet for almost a week now (with 6 days left to go until 'soft' stage), and I've had... Imagine brand organic broccoli soup (pureed) Imagine brand portobello mushroom soup (also pureed) Trader Joe's butternut squash soup (same) Bariatric Fusion meal-replacement protein shakes in flavors cappuccino, chocolate, & strawberry-banana Orgain clean protein shakes (in cartons) and to drink, besides the protein shakes... Hint flavored water (uncarbonated, unsweetened) TJ rooibos blood orange tea (herbal) Vitamin Water Zero (limited to 1/day) ...and lots of plain filtered water, of course

During the healing phase of weight loss surgery, your weight will fluctuate for various reasons. You're healing from major surgery, just follow your program recommendations and have realistic expectations. You're three weeks post op, and that's when the majority of wls patients experience their first stall, which can also include some weight fluctuations like you described. My weight increased and decreased and bounced around a bit during the healing phase, I stayed focused on hitting my fluid and protein goals, and today I'm 6 weeks post op revision to RNY and the weight is falling off now, because I'm past the healing phase and back to exercisisng. I started losing fat and gaining muscle pretty soon after surgery, according to my smart scale. Muscle weighs more than fat, so even tho I was losing fat, I was gaining muscle, so the scale didn't move, but I was losing inches, my clothes were getting bigger. Just keep doing what your team told you to do and you will be fine.
