    Fear of failure

Bariatric surgery is more than an operation. Most of our programs come with a team that includes a bariatrician, nutritionist, psychologist, and some even have a physical trainer in addition to the surgeon. A good program helps you get inside your head to discover the triggers that mess up your efforts to succeed. A good program will help you examine the relationships in your life to determine who is enabling you to fail by bringing inappropriate foods around, and who are the toxic people who torment and bully you about your intention to get healthy A good program will educate you about proper nutrition for the human body. The nutritionist will help you discern between real food (that you can plant, pick, and chase) and industrial food products made in a factory and sent to your store in a package or served a ta drive-up window laden with sugar, salt, and grease. A good program will give you the tools pre-op to help you engage in the eating and exercise habits you will need post-op, so that by the time you have your surgery, you will be comfortable with the changes you have to make. A good program will help you understand that you did not succeed before because life isn't fair. To get a head start on developing the frame of mind you need for success, you can start TODAY with the following adjustments incorporated by most of our teams: Eat lean Protein first, and plenty of it. Then eat non-starchy veggies that are not covered in butter and salt. Dessert is an apple, not apple pie. Drink Water until your eyeballs float, and drink no calories. Don't become part of the sofa. I wish you the best. Instead of worrying, look forward to good health and a better quality of life. Hang in there, Kiddo.
  2. Hi, I was banded early Feb so im a few wks post op. Trying to learn to eat more proteins and stay full. Eating lots of fish, eggs, and chicken for dinner and lunch with shake for breakfast. Feels pretty much the same as pre-surgery so dr said might get fill next visit. Seems very early to me but Im often hungry and do want results. I'm down about 20 lbs since my pre surgery diet-so most pre-op weight loss. Any suggestions or tips? Im just about ready to begin exercise so im hoping that kicks it into gear.
  3. I'm on soft food, and expected to feel the restriction of a smaller stomach, but I don't. Had a can of tuna with no problem, full but not uncomfortable. I keep reading about people eating a few bites and feeling full, and I feel like I can eat a lot more than expected. Is this normal? I'm so afraid of falling back into old patterns of binging. I had an easy recovery, no pain, and started working out half hour a day. Now at two weeks, I'm exhausted all the time. I can be up and moving for max three hours, I then crash and nap, sleep 9 hours a night, and then take a morning nap. I was feeling so great, and now I'm returning to work and I don't know how I'm going to stay awake. It's a desk job, but still. I'm getting in 400-600 calories. About 60g of protein. Help!
  4. I just ordered the unjury unflavored protein powder . I am having the same problem with the shakes and hope I will be able to add the protein to crystal light or something light instead. I am having a hard time with the thicker drinks. Actually I am having a hard time with drinking period. but i just learned I can tolerate popsicles so I am downing them all day (sf of course).
  5. http://www.livestrong.com/article/476921-how-much-protein-can-you-absorb-at-one-time/ There are a variety of answers, but this one is the first one that broke down the whys and hows.
  6. I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and general anxiety disorder 7 years ago. I gained so much weight from meds, that gastric bypass was my best option. Even though I found a great cocktail of meds now, I still had some issues with anxiety after surgery. I just continue with my meds and see my therapist once a week. She really helps me with my eating issues, and that I need to make sure to look at food as fuel. I use to constantly eat my emotions. It has really helped. Hang in there, and feel free to chat with me anytime about how you're feeling.

You got time make your own = i have found that making your own taste better and to your liking - With a Dairy allergy you may want to try protein waters - Sams has them or water soluble protein powders
  8. best wishes to you, please heed your doctor's orders along the way and you will do GREAT! If you haven't already, try out your post op foods (protein drinks, etc) now so you find things you like and have those on hand during your recovery. Keep us posted!
  9. Yesterday my husband and I attended a get-together we have in our community every Friday night. At only 3 days post-op I sit carefully, don't laugh fully (omg does THAT hurt!), and I had not told anyone in the group about my surgery. When it came out last night there were varying degrees of acceptance and two very verbal comments that I could have done this on my own, that surgery was "silly." Both were from women who are more than 100 lbs overweight. I do not take their criticisms to heart. I know I am doing something wonderful for my health and for ME. I also know they are both just jealous that one of the 'fatties' is doing something about her weight and that makes them uncomfortable in their own skin. Oh well! I don't preach this as the answer for everyone, I simply stated this is the solution for me. I know they will watch me closely, hoping I will fail. Not gonna happen, that is not an option. Success is the best revenge.
  10. I brewed a cup of decaf coffee and put it in the blender with 8 oz of milk and a cup of ice and blended it up then I poured 8 oz of that mixture into my shaker bottle and added one scoop of Unjury Chocolate Splendor. It was really good. I just refrigerated the left over coffee mixture for my afternoon shake. I like Unjury protein powder the best so far.
  11. I remember my first week out was pure hell!! I just wanted to eat a burger or anything I could get my hands on. When some of the Vets would say "Head Hunger" I was like HOGWASH!! Slowly but surely I started increasing my protein intake and things turned around. Every 2 hours I eat whether I want to or not. Once your diet advances you will have a bigger selection of foods you can eat. Head Hunger feels real but it's not, just hang in there you'll make it. Laura-ven you always have such great advice you could charge good money. Next time me and the hubby have it out, I will have to consult you You do Pro Bono I hope
  12. I wonder if making a frappé with chocolate protein powder, skim milk and some ice would help with that once you can do full liquids? You could make it thick enough to be spoonable with less milk and more ice, I'd think. Plus it's protein and water. Hmm. Maybe I'll try it for lunch on Monday to see what it's like.
  13. You should definitely consult your doctor on his/her plan for your first couple of weeks. I know that some doctors do only clear liquids the first two weeks, and then "full liquids" the second two. My doctor, on the other hand, does anything liquid during the first two weeks, as long as it is the consistency to be sipped through a straw (BUT DON'T USE A STRAW - TO MUCH AIR/GAS). Of course, protein needs to be FIRST PRIORITY. I have been doing lentil soup put through the blender, and fat-free greek yogurt. I have also been doing drinks that I ordered through American Bariatric - both their clear fruit drinks (a little like Crystal Light), and their cappucino mix (delicious - I mix it with warm coffee - 15 grams of protein and 90 calories!).
  14. It sounds as though you may be beating yourself up over non-issues. You said that you feel like you could have lost 50 pounds on any diet by now and guess what....? You could have. We ALL could have, and most of us have, more than once and for whatever the reasons it doesn't stick, and we continue to do what we do and gain it back plus some. The reason we got surgery is to jump off that crazy train and do something more permanent Permanent doesn't mean quick and easy though, unfortunately. Sometimes I wonder about what goes on or what gets said pre-op to people because I knew right from the get-go that regular food would be back on the menu at some point. The fact is that we can eat most things so we have to be careful. On a regular basis your diet should not consist of soft (mash it with a fork) type of stuff. You also shouldn't be having meats that are swimming in sauces, broths, gravies or cheese either. All of these things cause you to be able to consume more than is ideal for someone like us. If you are in a rut I suggest getting a costco membership or something like that - go shop somewhere different and look at other options besides whatever you've been having.

Can I use the equate Walmart brand protein drinks for my pre-op diet? My surgery date is June 26.. Can I also use them after surgery?

Has anyone used the Puritan whey Protein Isolate unflavored? The reviews are good but I don't know if I should invest for surgery. They told me yesterday not to use the Walmart Body Fortress whey protein-only isolate. No blends either.

It's pretty important to have protein to help you heal and to keep your body from burning muscle for the protein it needs. Have you tried adding a Protein Drink in between meals to help supplement your protein intake? When I'm "full," if that's what it's called, I feel like I have to burp, but nothing will come out. Has anyone else experienced this feeling? How do the rest of you know when it's time to push the plate away?

OMG What an amazing 2 year ride!

Thank you for posting. It is good to know that with discipline and hard work, the surgery works as a tool to keep the weight off. I was at the point of scheduling my lap band surgery several years ago and I am glad I didn't. The lap band doesn't remove the part of the stomach that the hunger hormone, Grehlin is made in. Lap band surgery requires an incredible amount of discipline to abstain from trigger foods and sliders, consistently maintain a way of eating and to exercise religiously to keep the weight off. Despite spending seven years in the US Army, I do not have that amount of discipline. I admire those that have been successful with the lap band WLS for I know now the incredible amounts of work they have to do to lose the weight and maintain that loss. The further I get out, the slower the weight loss. The more I have to exercise and watch myself to not fall into bad habits. I think the sleeve is just a tool but it gives you months of practice in eating small amounts of food, eating Protein first, drinking enough Water and exercising so you can change your life for the better. Blessings, Kathleen
  19. @@scubasteph The first thing is congrats on your new band! The second thing is don't stress...take a deep breath and relax cause you are right on track. In the first few days to weeks after surgery you are going to be very swollen inside and the idea right now is healing. You don't want to force yourself to eat or drink anything right now. You want to rest and heal up. If you can take many many tiny sips of your Protein drink. Use a medicine dose cup. You are very much "babying" your band right now. You would not feed a newborn a half gallon of milk and neither can you feed yourself that right now. As you soon will see that as you are putting liquids in they will come out and soon enough the #2 problem you mentioned will right itself. Your not putting much in so...give it a chance. Feel good and let us know how your doing!!
  20. Some of my nausea could have been from the liquid pain meds but I ruled that out by stopping it all together. Those prob wasnt great because I feel like it took me Longer than it should have to get moving, but it was so gross I couldn't stomach it. I've just been without. But still need the zofran. I agree if they told us everything we probably would have gone with a Lucerne of diets And failures instead of getting this tool now to change our lives. I keep telling myself it will pay off as I know it will. The carnation Breakfast essentials and the nectar are low carb. The carnation is the No sugar added one it's a blue box. It has 60 calories And 12g of carbs. This is what they had me on during my pre op liquid diet. I mix it with skim milk. It can be purchased at your local grocery store or Wal-Mart although my local Wal-Mart is usually out I usually have to go to the regular grocery store for it The nectar brand has 15 flavors. Ive only tried 3. It is 100 calories per scoop and 0 carbs and 23g of Protein. It came highly v recommend by my dietician bcuz he said it is a protein isolate and not a protein blend which means u absorb all of the protein. The cheapest place I've found this is online. At my location Vitamin shoppe it was $45-$55, but it is cheaper at www.mybariatricpantry.com shipping was under a week and they also have a sample pack for like $20 where they will send you 10 different individual flavors to try. For another great flavor a patient who had the bypass came in to one of our classes and mixed the 2 together (which makes a couple servings) And it was great. A strawberry chocolate concoction but not too sweet
  21. Thanks for sharing your story. My surgery date was the 3rd March and I came round from the surgery in agony, I had had previous abdominal surgery although not on my stomach and had sailed through it so I assumed this would be the same, how wrong was I, I was in agony from the gas and felt like something was sticking and then ripping in my stomach. The slightest movement was leaving me in agony. I ended up bruised at the bottom of my belly and they dont know why. I am a couple of weeks out and the pain has mostly subsided and I feel so much better. Moving is no longer sore and I am able to drink "normally" I am getting sick of cream soups now though lol. I still can not tolerate protein shakes they are the only thing that makes me vomit so I see the nutritionalist tomorrow and will see what she suggests. I have been craving meat this week lol but will stick to the diet and to what they say.

    Had 1st fill yesterday--questions

I had my surgery June 26, 2007 and just had my first fill ysterday August 14th. I didn't eat all day and most of today. I finally had a rye cracker with hummus, it went down well and I am feeling good. I too want to know if I am going to feel this full sensation. I am down 33 lbs in 7 weeks but I was commited to eating about 7-800 calories a day. I do notice I've not been able to drink all of my protein shake. I can't wait to have some refried beans, I live on them. Before my fill I could easily eat a 1/2 cup of beans and a whole chicken breast. I pray I won't be able to eat that much for some time yet. My Dr. put 3 or 4 cc's in me and my band holds 12.
  23. Hi, I'm at the beginning of this process. So far I've watched 1 informational video from a local surgeon, Dr. Anita Courcoulas, and read a little on the internet, and that's about all I know. After finding this site today, I followed a link to the vertical sleeve site, and was confused and dismayed to see so many people there complaining about the LAP-BAND®® and claiming that the VS was the better way to go. The only thing I'm sure of is that I'm not interested in the RNY. Since I live in a city known for medical expertise, I think I can rely on the surgical practice I picked; they're experienced. I filled out a questionaire and someone from the office called and gave me the option of attending classes at Magee Hospital or having my PCP monitor my six month pre-surgical efforts. I picked my PCP because it's cheaper and easier to reach, but now I'm afraid she won't have the experience with WLS to advise me about all the many details. She is a good doctor, though, and takes time to discuss matters very well with me. I need to spend some time going over this board and the VS board, also, to get a feel for the experiences of other people. It's the beginning of a long and confusing journey, but one that I hope will lead to a better life.
  24. I had surgery on 2/25. I also had a lot of discomfort from the gas they use to expand the abdominal cavity. It seemed to take about a week to finally be absorbed and stop bothering me. For protein, I bought platinum Hydro Whey. Look into it. It's super easy absorbing 30gr per serving and taste ok. I'm having a hard time getting my protein any other way. Love the sugar free Popsicles. I think I'm down 25-30 lbs. from the 25th.
