For all those who have lost 100 pounds or more in a year
brenda62 replied to candeegal's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I am 6 mths out on 10/04 and have lost 111 with 30 to go. I also have followed my Dr rules. I do eat 6 small meals a day and it works for me. I also do not drink protein shakes because I was told they were like slider foods and I would rather eat something anyway. I go to curves 5 days a week and walk 6 to 7 times a week. I think I am going to have to go to a regular gym before long, I feel like this last 30 pounds is going to take even harder work! As for what I eat let's start with what I do not eat. Rice, pasta, bread, soda and sugary deserts. I love yogurt mixed with fruit and kashi in the morning.( I do also drink a home made latte when I first get up) during the day I eat chili (homemade low cal) salad with meat and eggs and veggie, whatever meat I cook for dinner and veggies, snacks are laughing cow cheese on a wasu cracker, 100 cal snack, fruit, protein bar (I only eat half) I do watch my protein and drink lots of water. -
AniO- I had a pain in 2 teeth actually and the worst one needed a root canal, which has been done..and today I start the process of getting a post and crown put in. The other tooth still bothers but only when I drink anything cold. I will tell you that from this whole experience, I did learn that you need to tell ur doctor bc I almost didn't and it's not worth taking the risk if you have an infection...have your dentist tell u if it's an infection, it could be an infection especially if it's a crown you already have in place... the problem is when u have infection. I'm hoping I'll get good news today from the dentist so I can finally schedule my surgery. I'm glad I'm not the only one with these second thoughts...but I know that I spent almost a year doing the research and the steps to get to surgery and it's the best thing for me. I think it's the actual fact that my body, the stomach I was born with is being changed...and that kind of change it forever...so it's scary, but the alternative which could be DEATH if I don't get rid of the weight is just not an option. Thank you all !! I hope it's good news this afternoon for me

Hello all. I am a southern california Kaiser pt. And YES its true. Your BMI has to be 50+ or if less you have to have co-morbidities. You also have to do 6 month classes. I began this whole process with Kaiser in September 2008when I was referred then went to orientation in November 2008 and started the classes in January 2009. Its a long process, but its totally worth it. They show you how to count calories and Protein and it will help you suceed in the end. Good luck all. I will be done with classes in June. Wish me luck!! ~M

Help, help, help - preop diet failure
IndioGirl55 replied to Liz1531's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
LIZ1531 What does your pre-op diet consist of??? Can you call your doctor and get it modified so that you can stick to it. Mine was oatmeal a.m. lunch Protein shake - dinner protein Soup.. I couldn't stick to is (my dr provides all preop food and they were out of a lot so what I had i didn't like) So I called them and asked if i could have fish and a small salad for dinner - they said yes just stay away from the carbs - so i was able to deal with it - but again i only had 7 days - then the last 2 days prior to surgery i had to do Clear liquids only - failed on one day but was nervous the day before so it didn't bother me (nerves are the only time i don't eat) Call your doctor and see what you can do - Good Luck:D -

I'm There with you, My doctor has put me on the after surgery plan, cream soup, cream of wheat and jello(no protein) diet 2 weeks before, I am in pre-op diet hell, of all the plans, all the diets in my life this is the absolute worst, I know that my liver needs to be reduced, but this is bad. I keep klinging to the fact that this is temporary, I have a calender and mark an x through each night that I make it and count the days till surgery(august 23rd). I know that after surgery your stomach will be smaller and it will not bother me like it is now. However for now, we live in diet hell! I also have kept in mind all of the post op horror stories and I know I want to give myself the best chance of quick and uncomplicated recovery. that is what is getting me through! -
what kind of protein? if meat or chicken that is allot I think. What size bougie did your doc use?

For those that have lost 70lbs or more
She Smiles replied to wannabthin's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I eat like Jacqui, which is how we are advised to here in Australia. I eat good healthy foods (which includes rice and Pasta - I can't eat bread) in smaller portions. I also don't count calories/protein. I eat Snacks like almonds, yougurt or fruit cups if I need to, which might be every other day. And I still eat chocolate whenever I feel like it. I've exercised 3-5 times (like a gym session of treadmill, bike and eliptical, a spin class, or a 5km run around my the block near my house and I am also currently doing a boot camp session twice a week) a week for 30-60 minutes since about 2 months after my surgery. I'm now running 5-10km fun runs when they are organised in my city and am fitter and stronger than I have ever been in my life. I've lost about 85lbs in just over 10 months and have about another 20 to go to my dream weight. But I've already exceeded my Surgeon's goal weight. That said, I had a partial unfill a couple of months ago due to a bad stomach bug where I couldn't keep a thing down, and I have yet to get back to my sweet spot. I'm going for a fill tomorrow and I will be back to my pre-bug fill level, so hopefully that will move my loss along a little. -

Don't know what to do...
Sassygirl06 replied to EllaJo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I lost more then 30 pounds prior to surgery without very much exercise. This is what I did. 1) replaced my Breakfast with a Meal Replacement shake ( I used high Protein slim fast) 2) two hours after each shake I would have a 100 calorie or less snack. 3) dinner could be anything I wanted as long as it was under 500 calories. 4) one last 100 calorie snack after dinner 5) made sure I didn't eat anything after 7 pm. 6) I drank lots of Water, or crystal light, or tea sweetened with Splenda. That's it. I managed to lose all this weight from the end of may till my pre op apt in the beginning of August. You can do it! Don't get discouraged! Good luck and keep smiling! -

I did Optifast for 2 weeks pre-op and the days 1-3 were the worst then I wasn't hungry anymore but I did lots of things with my shakes, the best one is take your Protein liquid - vanilla slim fast or whatever and pour it in a blender - add some sugar free Jello, to taste, add ice and blend - it is great. I expected to loose a great amount of weight but only lost 8# but I made it through and have sailed through the surgery and now have lost a total of 24# and will be 3 weeks on Monday. Hang in there - IT IS WORTH IT -
Definitely don't eat anything you're not cleared for. Try mixing it up.. I was so sick of sweet stuff, I had some chicken bouillon with Protein powder (mix up the Protein Powder with warm Water, then mix that with the hot water and bouillon) and that was heaven. I also did better with the clear Protein drinks frozen into ice pops. Just keep plugging away, focus on fluids first, then protein, and you'll get through it. It gets better!

Best tasting protein drink/powder
Katydidnt1 replied to Danielleh's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you buy Premiere Protein at Sam’s Club and don’t like it you can return it. I loathed the peaches and cream...like couldn’t choke it down last year when I was doing Keto. Barf! -
Did I mention I turn 52 later this month, so what to do
Gregnlr commented on Gregnlr's blog entry in Blog 56078
the second reason I would not do popcorn, is because that is not protein and it would be empty calories. You either work the band for results, meaning you eat good food and are successful at your weight loss. Or you work around the band, seeing what you can eat even though it is not a good food choice. My cheating is having an extra protein shake as opposed to some who drink milkshakes. -
Feelin' down and frustrated need support, please
Crishell replied to jfran's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Don't beat yourself up.Good to hear that someone else is feeling the same as i am. I think of myself as very goal oriented too and I want to be successful at this venture. My 40th birthday is August 14 and i want to lose 30 more pounds before then. But I have also plateaued weight loss wise (although still losing inches) and it is driving me crazy. Been in a plateau for like past almsot 3 months playing with the same 4-5 pounds same as you. I feel very frustrated and it is a daily struggle for it not get the best of me. I have gone back and re-evaluated my food intake, exercise and all to see what I am doing wrong and I cannot come up with anything major although I have made more of an effort to increase my protein to see if that helps. My New Year's resolution was to start going out more and obsess less about a pound, protein, etc. While I am happy & grateful for the weight I have lost, seems like the past year my life became the scale, counting calories, working out at Curves, going to work and it never ends. So you and I must make a pact to have some fun, relax and enjoy life. -
Need Lap Band Buddy / Mentor Seeking Mentor

My favorite way to drink a protein shake is to put a spoonful of pb and ice then blend! I use EAS chocolate fudge from walmart. I crave these shakes, plus it helps that I love ice cream and this kind of replaces that for me. I am an ice cream addict. I did good not having a snack but now I have 2 sometimes 3 a day. Mostly healthy but not always. Maybe when winter is over and we are not cooped up so much it will be better for me. -
I can eat more than a half a cup. Am I okay?
Melissannde replied to Meduseld's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My response to a very similar question on the Post-Op board: Once past the healing stages and onto regular food we were told 3oz of Protein and 1/2 cup low carb veggies 3X a day. Only high protein, low cal Snacks as needed. Now my doctor is telling new bandsters.. about 1 cup of food per meal. I measured my 3oz of protein the other day and it came out to 1/2 cup.. so Ive probably been eating 1 cup of food per meal for about 2 years and been successful. Every doctor is going to be slightly different in their ideas and each patient is going to respond slightly differently. -
I'm in the same boat. I had my first fill since Nov 2011 which puts me at 6.75cc. I've been feeling the same way. I drank some tea this morning before my protein shake and that helped. I think it's due to swelling after a fill. Vomiting also causes swelling and movement of the band. If it continues I'll have it taken out just giving myself time to adjust. I just felt like I was eating a bit too much. My weight loss slowed a tad.,I've had consistant weight loss of 8-10 lbs a month since the surgery. Down from a size 24/26 to a 16/18.

Newbie + frustrated
HelenaMarie83 replied to HelenaMarie83's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I understand that not all calories are created equal. The food plan I am on is pretty strict. I was provided a binder with a list of foods that I can choose from. Lean proteins, non starchy veggies, fresh fruit, very little fat, nothing processed and no sugar. I get in between 70-80 grams of protein a day, which comes from food, not supplements. I keep a food journal and I'm not hungry in between meals, and I'm not snacking. I know the crazy fluctuation has to be water weight, I just don't know why I'm retaining so much water. I would have to consume an extra 3500 calories to gain one pound of fat. A typical breakfast for me is egg whites, spinach and mushrooms, a slice of 40 calorie bread with a fat free butter and a small banana. Lunch is usually 3 oz of boneless, skinless chicken breast, mixed non starchy veggies sautéed in Pam, 3/4 oz of triscuit crackers and a small apple. Dinner is similar to lunch. I take my vitamins in the morning with 8 oz of skim milk. Am I overthinking it? Am I just obsessing/stressing myself out? I'm drinking myself nuts. Lol -
So I started my pre op diet...
Used2b575lbs replied to Noel Bleakney's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know you have a bit of a different regimen but my last two weeks were 2 atkins premade protein shakes (breakfast and lunch) and a big salad with chicken, fish, turkey, eggs and cheese or other proteins on it. -
Another Lap Band vs. Sleeve question..
Leesa926 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I started looking into the Lap Band but then reading the internet felt the sleeve was a better option. Today I had my first appointment with the surgeon who does both but admitted he favors the band. He talked a lot about it and makes good points. Now I am not sure what the best option for me is. He said I could do both and to take my time - ultimatly it is my decision. I have heard pros and cons on both. I think my thinking was the sleeve would work more in the sense the sleeve wouldn't let me eat to much. I know I have to change my habits either way and I am fine with that but maybe felt the sleeve gave me that extra protection. The doctor feels the band is best but it is all in the aftercare. He says the sleeve is still newer that is why there isn't as much long term information. He thinks both are great surgeries just that he leans more on the side of the band. I will continue to do research but wanted your input. Appreciate the help and avice! -
Don't know what to do...
joatsaint replied to EllaJo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The only way I was able to lose weight pre-op was to go low carb. I ate less than 20 grams of carbs a day and lost 10 lbs the week before surgery. I was drinking the EAS carb control dutch chocolate shakes twice a day and eating only Protein (grilled pork loin) for supper. The bad side of going low carb is that if you cheat, you body will hang on to every one of those carbs and you will gain weight back. -
For those that have lost 70lbs or more
Jachut replied to wannabthin's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I eat totally normally, just less. I dont count Protein, I dont focus on protein, I eat carbs, usually Cereal and bread daily, I drink alcohol in moderation and enjoy what I want in moderation when I go out to eat. I basically eat 3 meals a day, no Snacks, that works best for me. I've never drunk a Protein shake and I've never been advised not to drink with meals. Every so often I have a really bad day or week where I eat badly - too much chocolate or Cookies in particular. I write it off and get back on the wagon, I dont wallow in it and go right off the rails. I dont fuss over what there will be to eat wherever I'm going, and I dont obsess over takeing home doggy bags of food I've not finished in a restaurant. So what if I dont eat it all? I just make a decision from what's available wherever I happen to be and yes, sometimes that's even McDonalds! I hate ice cream and sweet drinks so never had to deal with that particular issue. I run for about 45 minutes 4 or 5 times a week and do three fairly tough circuit training sessions a week as well. I've lost 85lb in 18 months which is more than 100% of my excess weight. I'd say its been easy, I really would. It's just been gradual and natural and I've lost my terrible obsession with food and dieting. -
Honestly? It's widely available but it's got a buttwad of extra sugar that is unnecessary. It's more inconvenient, but I order Peanut Butter Slim from Vitacost. It's similar without all the extra added sugar and the burnt peanut taste that I always taste from PB2. I heart the stuff and buy it 2 jars at a time. LOL. I use it in my yogurt, cottage cheese and protein smoothies. YUM!

2 questions for those closer to goal
HeatherO replied to wanabthin's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I am down to the last 20 myself . . . and I am still consistently losing. It is getting harder however and I find I have to "tweak" things regularly. I will stay on a particular "plan" for a week and if I see that my weight is moving in the right direction, I stay the course. When I start to stall out or don't see movement, I make changes to exercise, calorie intake, Protein intake, food choices, etc to change things up and hopefully make them move again. It seems like keeping my body "guessing" seems to be the best way to peel off the pounds at this point. I also do not keep my calorie intake the same every day to avoid a rut. I have very low calorie days (800-950) mixed with higher calorie days (but never above 1250 calories). I usually do two low, then one high but it is not always the same. At six months out, I have found that I stall at any calorie level if it is always the same. I also can stall if I eat the same foods every day (which is in my nature to do). This works for me, but of course our bodies are all different. I suffered through many plateaus in the beginning, and once I learned how to break them, I turned plateau busting into part of my regular routine . . . and it is working beautifully for now . . . who knows if it will still work the last 5-10 pounds to goal . . . or if it will work when I bypass my original goal and go for the smoking hot goal of 125???
