  1. Man, I am going to have to try the built bars. My rule is no less than 1g protein per 10 calories and under 5 sugars. Carbs are not a huge deal for me because I don't eat much anyway and I am allowed to. I randomly try different one, I really like QUEST brand and keep them on hand regularly. But I will randomly grab a new one to try from a convenience store where I can buy and sample 1 of them rather than buying a box and not like them. My latest try was the "Snickers + protein" bar. I was VERY let down. Didn't taste like snickers AT ALL and it wasn't good regardless. I took 1 bite and tossed it. Guess I am going for a built bar next time.

Thanks ShoppGirl, I think it was down to the lack of energy, I’ve struggled with eating 800 calories high Protein diet.
  3. I have heard very good things about the built bars too. I have been afraid to try them though because in the past I have overdone the protein bars and too much of anything can be bad. Let us know if you try them.
  4. Not too sound like a broken record, but Built bars are what I use when I need to have something with me to get a little nutrition and protein. I am particularly fond of the salted caramel and the coconut. At 140 calories and 17 grams of protein, they work very well in my diet.

    Weight during preop

Yeah, I have food allergies so I use hardly any condiments. No gluten. No tomatoes. (The 2 take out most condiments). I can handle minimal dairy. Whey protein I’m ok with but cheese I have to be careful (think 2 of the baby bell cheeses a day). About the only condiment I’m ok with is vinegars. Oil I only use the spray (per the nutritionist) to decrease intake and focus on fats from avocado, nuts, seeds and hummus. I see the surgeon in the next 2 weeks so I’ll see what he says. I do know the NP said everything is really going to be based on my other health conditions as my cardiologist wants me to have surgery (I have some congenital heart defects). The surgeon had mentioned he’s been discussing me with my cardiologist. So maybe I’m just stressing myself out (not the craziest). I know my advocate said on our last call everything was looking good.
  6. I second Built Bars as the best protein bars available. They’re lower in calories and sugar than most other protein bars. I wouldn’t consider them “meal replacement bars,” but perhaps you are using that term loosely. You should easily be able to find a coupon code for 12%-15% off with Honey or Capital One browser extensions. Be warned, though — you will get hooked on them and buy way too many because they keep releasing limited-edition flavors. I personally prefer the regular bars to the puffs, but they are all delicious. Pro tip: a lot of the bars are better warmed in the microwave (10-15 seconds on high, or use the “soften butter” setting if you have one).
  7. Today was my pre op appointments. I first met with the resident, then the surgeon and then the nutritionist. Then I went for my Covid test and then on to anesthesia and finally the lab. It was a busy day, but I managed to stop on the way home for a hair cut. 😅 I am starving!!! Today I drank three Gatorade Zero with protein, 3 sf jello cups, the broth from a can of chicken noodle soup mixed with a packet of ProCel for an extra 10 G protein…and probably half a box of sf popsicles. Okay, not really…but a LOT of popsicles. One more day and then surgery. Hopefully I won’t be hungry anymore after that. A big, fat taco with mild sauce would taste so good!
  8. You really should be looking at eating mostly real food not relying on shakes & other meal replacements by now. Reintroducing real food to re educate your tummy post surgery. Is it all foods or just some specific foods, flavours &/or textures you struggle with? It’s not unusual to struggle with certain foods to begin (eggs, chicken, steak are pretty common culprits) - your tummy can be pretty fussy while it’s still healing & recovering. If it’s all foods, it may be best to speak with your surgeon to find out what’s going on. Personally I didn’t have another shake once I started purées. Got everything I needed from real food. I used to take left overs to work. I bagged & froze single portions so I’d just grab them in the morning & reheat at work. Soups, mince dishes, casserole/braises, etc. still pretty soft & moist. Coarse & dry foods can be difficult to eat & cause discomfort (restriction, foamies, etc.) so I think you would struggle with meal replacement bars. Cheese, yoghurt, fruit (if allowed at this stage), boiled eggs or egg salad can be included if necessary. In the future meal replacement or protein shakes & bars can be an easy just in case addition to your diet or to boost your protein on a day you may be a little low. Great for travelling too.

    August surgery buddies!

I understand the frustration with not losing. I thought the first week or two would show a great bit of loss, but so far the scale is hovering between 296-298 fluctuating up and down. I’m only 5 days out so I guess it’s still fluid retention from the surgery itself. I just really wanted to end out August under 290. I know that it is nothing I am doing wrong. I’m walking every 4 hours, getting my water in, I hit 60g of protein today but have been averaging 40-50. Drinking shakes, eating yogurt, and still doing clear liquids. I track everything in Carb Manager. My calories haven’t gone above 400 all week. I’m following every instruction they gave me to the letter. So if I still haven’t lost by my post-op next week, at least I’ll have a log of everything I’m doing and eating to show them, so maybe they can help me figure out what I need to adjust.
  10. Haven't updated this thing in a while. It's just to keep me accountable and I know others can read this so feel free to chime in. I'm officially almost entering my 7th month of post op life from my gastric bypass. I feel so much better and I've lost over 100 lbs but there are days I still feel like it won't all really matter at all until I am stick skinny (which wouldn't be possible without plastics and even then I don't think so). I hate that I think that way - it makes it hard to be happy for myself and then that feeds into not meeting my goals.

I was in a weight loss rut for a while there - like the whole month of August basically was me just gaining and losing the same 4 lbs. I figured it was just a weight loss stall part of the process because I hear there's a big stall 6 months out. I also was macro and calorie counting but I was drinking more alcohol than I ever have since surgery. I think that contributed to it immensely. Just to be clear I wasn't drinking out of transfer addiction - just going to more social events and dinners because my life has gotten so incredibly busy. It's amazing because I have the confidence to go out and be social now but it makes it harder to navigate the strict calorie limits and hydration goals when you're always hanging out with people.

Anyway, I really put a lot of thought into calories the past two weeks and stopped drinking too. I finally broke my stall. I went from 240 to 236 and it seems to be sticking. I'm at this weird part in the surgery journey where the honeymoon is over. I no longer get food stuck in my esophagus on the regular but I have noticed I am starting to feel nauseous after eating (probably because I don't have the limitation of the food getting stuck) so I don't realize how much my body is actually okay with.

So now I'm at this point where I'm figuring out how much of different types of foods I can really eat without making myself nauseous. It's a work in progress but I'm determined. I'm usually good around 1/2 a cup of carbs and 1-1.5 cups of vegetables. Protein is always different. Sometimes I can eat it no problem, others it's one of the only foods that still get "stuck". I try not to go crazy counting calories because I have a history of eating disorders. I mainly try to stay under 1300 calories. My BMR is around 1900 right now. Instead of counting every single morsel, I make sure I eat more in the beginning of the day so I don't snack at night and I weigh my food if it's a fat or carb.

I'd really like to add more exercise back into the equation but I've been on my *ss for the past 2 weeks because I sprained my tailbone. It's finally better so I'm going to try doing a mile run and a 2 mile walk at least 3 times a week to start out. Weathers also clearing up for outdoor runs and I'd like to get my sweat on anyway.

But anyway, I feel like I'm at this point of my surgery journey that doesn't get talking about a lot. The pre op and right after surgery phases are talked about most but the most important part seems to be what happens after all the cool perks start dying down? Hunger comes back, or you're able to increase portions, introduce foods back, etc. I'd love to talk to others about this point just for support. I know it just comes down to tracking and movement but sometimes it does feel like you're doing it all and those numbers won't budge (they don't go up, but they don't go down). For me it's best not to obsess over the number. I can get really depressed checking my weight everyday. I'm down to checking about 3 times a month now.

Not sure what else I'm trying to say here. Just want to keep going. My first goal weight was 220 that I set for myself. I'm about 15 lbs away from it. I think once I hit 220 and maintain it for 2 months I'll set a new goal weight for 200 lbs. I think at that point I'll be ready for plastics. I'd love to have my arms tightened, my stomach skin removed and my boobs lifted. Everything else I can take or leave haha

    August surgery buddies!

I have 32 pounds less since my surgery on the 12th. My non scale victories: I have ankles again (still chubby) but I can see them and my feet are not swolen even today that I'm pre-menstrual. My skinny jeans that used to "choke" my belly bottom goes all the way up to just under my boobs, my towel is less than an inch to cover me. Still struggling with the stairs and is because I haven't been able to eat 5 times a day or drink or the protein they are telling me to drink (find all protein shakes discusting) and Dominican Republic don't have variety or food specifically for Bariatrics ( have to order stuff from amazon), so I cook everything. August surgery buddies!

Hi, same surgery and same date! I am still on the liquid diet tho for one more week per Dr’s order. I get about 60g of protein daily and about 50oz of water/liquids. Feeling a bit frustrated because I have only lost about 1.5lb since surgery.

    Nausea

I had a patch from the surgery for three days, that seemed to work really well. I had an Rx from before the surgery and I was told I could take if needed after. If I take it early enough it helps. If I wait to long nothing seems to help. Also if I get even slightly dehydrated I feel nauseous. I was getting sick from my protein shakes (too many) so I cut back to no more than 1 fairlife a day and break it up (only a few ounces at a time) then I seem to be ok. I’ve been doing pretty well with chicken salad and high protein foods - I just have to eat 5 or 6 smaller meals… if I try to eat 3 I don’t feel well. It’s to much at one time. RealGood brand frozen dinners are a higher protein and I’ve tolerated those well puréed. Texture is a little weird - but I got used to it. (One more week until no more purées - I’m hoping that makes it even easier) Maybe check with your team and see if they are willing to prescribe something or if they are ok with you pcp prescribing something.

    August surgery buddies!

Hi folks, I'm new to this site. Gastric bypass on 8/23, doing really well so far. Gas pain really sucked but I'm past that, I'm up to the pureed stage. So far my pouch has tolerated 4 oz of pureed food quite well, no pain or obvious fullness so far. And I'm already able to drink lots of water, easily getting 100+ oz in, plus 40 oz of herbal tea with no problems. Seems strange! And knocking protein out of the park, easily hitting 100 g a day. I emailed my ND to get his feedback to see if that was too much. I expected more restriction at this point. How's everyone else feeling restriction wise?

    Nausea

I can't stomach protein shakes at all, and no protein puddings either. You got meds for nausea? Do they work?
  16. LookingForward22

    Nausea

I was feeling rough after eating, so I decided to eat 1/2 the amount. If I was still gingery after that I ate more. I eat between 3 and 6 small meals a day - still eating the same amounts … I just eat less more. That made me feel better. Even though I was eating within what my diet said … I don’t think my stomach my stomach could handle as much as I was eating - despite the fact I wasn’t eating that much. It’s finding that right balance. Some days I do well - others, I don’t feel well. I’m working on it. I finally figured out the morning nausea - if I take my PPI right away and then I drink about 1/2 a protein shake - then work on my water… then my tummy is happy. But I try to lay still while my meds get started working. My dr also gave me some meds to take if it got to bad.
  17. Hi, I've not yet had surgery, but I have eaten the Think Crunch Protein bars for over 5 years. They usually run between 13-14 grams of protein and only 5 grams of sugar. (11 carbs) I like them because they are more like a wafer and it's a different consistency than most protein bars. They are about 200 calories for each bar. I'm not sure how well they will work as part of a post surgery nutrition plan, but the were a staple in my diet during my WW days.
  18. LookingForward22

    Hunger

I’m not on mushy food yet - still purées. But I have noticed that in the morning my stomach can bother me. I get a little nauseated because my stomach is empty. I take my morning pills (including my ppi) and then drink about .5 a protein shake and that seems to keep me ok. If I go to long without eating - I have that same feeling. Hopefully you figure it out and you feel better soon.

    Nausea

I'm three weeks post op, and I never really feel comfortable. I use myfitnesspal and measure my food in order to eat appropriate amounts. I do feel better now that I can eat actual food and not just soups or protein drinks, which I frankly found revolting. Now, I mostly eat white fish and chicken, hummus, refried beans, mashed baked beans, eggs etc. But even though I eat small amounts and try to eat slow, I usually feel nauseous after I eat, and also between meals. So many things disgust me now. I bought sugar free juice drinks, in order to drink something other than water, but they make me nauseous. Is this normal? Does everyone feel like this? Does it get better? Does anyone have any tips or tricks to get rid of nausea?
  20. Hello, So my twin sister and I had our gastric sleeve surgeries on August 10th. Today was our first day being able to eat mushy food. We have noticed that we seem to be getting what seems like hunger pains. We first noticed it when we were on the all liquid diet but I thought it would get better once we started to eat real food. We thought it would be easy to get our protein in once we ate real food but in reality it hasn’t been that easy. Has anyone else experienced this issue and is there anything that anyone suggests to help? Anything is much appreciated at this point. Thank you!!
  21. Hi, I am 6 weeks in and still hard to eat and drink. I just returned to work and need some ideas on what to eat feel like I'm not getting enough protein and it's really hard to drink the shakes now. I really miss using a straw. Does anyone have any meal replacement bar suggestions that are high in protein and low in sugar? Thank you. Sent from my LM-V350 using BariatricPal mobile app

    August surgery buddies!

I had RnY on 2nd August. I lost a little over 32 pounds between the Liver reducing diet and a week or so post op. Then it massively slowed down and now I’ve been at a stall for over a week. It’s so disheartening, I’m terrified that I’m doing something wrong! 😩 I’m trying to research as much as possible, because I wasn’t really given anything to follow. But I’m under 500 calories per day and I believe I’m eating right. Perhaps not enough protein though. It’s so overwhelming!
  23. When I was in nursing school in the late 90s, during my pediatric clinicals, I took care of a baby that had hundreds of seizures a day, and they put her on the keto diet to try to help. THAT'S what the keto diet was originally for, but some fad to lose weight. I wouldn't go to any surgeon who recommended ANY type of strict diet to me that left out whole food groups. Now, my surgeon did recommended very low carbs at first, but gradually adding them in. It is a very balanced approach and no food is completely off limits, in moderation, of course. I eat mostly vegetarian so that was important to me. Now, I am not a complete vegetarian and I was willing to eat some chicken and fish to get more protein after my surgery. Anyway. All surgeons are different. If you're not happy with their plan, find another doctor who is more aligned with the way you want to eat. This has to be permanent lifestyle change, and to be successful it's important to find something you can stick with long term. Some of my family does keto and it's always all or nothing with them. One minute they're totally strict, the next minute they're living on processed carbs.. It's a total diet mentality which I don't believe in. I don't want to get on my soapbox here. Just wanted to tell you that not all surgeons are gonna say you have to do keto. Sent from my Pixel 5a using BariatricPal mobile app

    Puree week

you're probably going through the infamous "three week stall" early. I did as well - mine was weeks 2 and 3. Just stick to your program and stay off the scale for a few days. As long as you stick to the program, the stall will eventually break and you'll be on your way again. They usually last 1-3 weeks. constipation is a common issue for WLS patients. It's due to the high protein diet and some of the supplements some of us take (i.e., calcium and iron - both known to back people up). I've been taking a capful of Miralax every morning for years, and so do a lot of others. Other people take things like stool softeners or magnesium tablets - whatever works!

    Puree week

Does anyone have issues with pureed foods? I literally only eating beans, protein shakes, different allowed cheeses and yogurt.
